LAST GAME Brandon Burton blocked a field goal attempt on the last play of the game and Utah earned a come-from-behind 17-16 victory over Brigham Young on Nov. 27 in Salt Lake City. Utah scored all 17 of its points in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead touchdown on a 3-yard run by Matt Asiata with 4:24 remaining. Joe Phillips started Utah’s scoring with a 40-yard field goal and DeVonte Christopher’s acrobatic catch in the end zone brought Utah to within three (13-10) a minute later. After a BYU field goal gave the Cougars a 16-10 lead, Asiata scored what proved to be the winning touchdown. Utah held a BYU team that was averaging 173 rushing yards a game to 65 yards on the ground. Matt Martinez had a career-high 17 tackles, Brian Blechen had seven tackles, a sack, an interception and a pass breakup, and Burton batted down three passes in addition to his game-winning block. KYLE STYLE With a 58-19 record in six years as Utah’s head coach, Kyle Whittingham has averaged nearly 10 wins a season while posting a 12-5 mark against BCS schools. He has half of the 10-win seasons in Utah’s 117-year football history (3) and was named the 2008 National Coach of the Year after leading Utah to a 13-0 record, a Sugar Bowl win over Alabama and a No. 2 final national ranking. Whittingham is 2-0 in BCS games, having served as the co-head coach of the 2005 Fiesta Bowl in addition to his Sugar Bowl victory. He is 6-0 overall in bowl games as Utah’s head or co-head coach. On the staff since 1994 when he coached the defensive line, Whittingham was the team’s defensive coordinator from 1995 until his appointment as head coach in 2005. During his 17-year tenure, the Utes have won 70-percent of their games (143-60) and played in 11 bowl games (winning 10). Whittingham has coached four first-team All-Americans—Luther Elliss (1994), Eric Weddle (2006), Louie Sakoda (2008) and Zane Beadles (2009)—and has sent 34 players to the NFL. UTAH’S ALL-TIME RECORD Utah’s all-time football record is 615-422-31. The Utes are 376-17416 at home (58-17 in Rice-Eccles Stadium, which opened in 1998), 221-234-13 in road games and 18-14-2 in games played at neutral sites. Utah finished its tenure as a member of the Mountain West Conference with a 242-135-10 record against MWC teams and a winning mark against every league program other than Air Force (Utah trails that series 14-13). SALT LAKE CITY—Jordan Wynn returned from a two-game injury absence to start at quarterback, but he and the rest of the first string gave way to backups in the second half of a 56-3 rout of San Jose State on Sept. 25. Wynn completed 14-of-18 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns in one half of play. Utah scored on its very first offensive play when Reggie Dunn ran a reverse 43 yards for a touchdown. The Spartans responded immediately with a 71-yard kickoff return to Utah’s 20-yard line, only to settle for a field goal. They would not score again on a Utah defense that held them to 1-of-12 on third down conversions and just seven first downs. Nearly everyone got into the act for Utah, which piled up 427 yards of total offense and got touchdowns from eight different players.

SALT LAKE CITY—Jordan Wynn completed 23-of-29 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns (no interceptions) in just three quarters of work to lead Utah to a 59-6 win over Colorado State in Salt Lake City. Utah rolled up 648 yards of total offense—the fifth-best single-game total in school history— while holding CSU to a pair of field goals and 213 total yards. The Rams had just 28 rushing yards—minus-five in the first three quarters against the No. 1 defense. DeVonte Christopher caught five passes for 111 yards, including a 71-yard TD reception from Wynn. Eddie Wide rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown. Sausan Shakerin rushed a team-high 80 yards—72 on a touchdown run—all in the fourth quarter. Chaz Walker’s eight tackles led a defense that stopped CSU on 10-of-12 third down attempts. Lamar Chapman had a sack, 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
COLORADO SPRINGS— Utah built up an 18-point lead and then held on to beat Air Force 28-23 in Colorado Springs. The Utes stuck to the ground— rushing 51 times compared to just 23 pass attempts—and getting 95 yards and a touchdown from Matt Asiata, and 82 yards and two scores from Eddie Wide. Utah maneuvered out of several jams by forcing five turnovers, holding AFA to 0-3 in fourth down attempts and making a critical stop on a two-point conversion after the Falcons had closed within five in the fourth quarter. Freshman Brian Blechen had a career day with a team-high nine tackles and contributed a third-quarter interception that set up Utah’s final score. Blechen also recovered a fumble. Other big defensive plays came on Justin TaplinRoss’ interception, a fumble caused and fumble recovered by Greg Bird and a forced fumble by Lamar Chapman.

2010 GAME RECAPS Game 10 Nov. 13 Notre Dame 28, #14/15/15 Utah 3 South Bend, Ind. Notre Dame Stadium [80,795]
SALT LAKE CITY— Nothing went right for the No. 5 Utes in the most nationally-hyped game ever held at Rice-Eccles Stadium. After hosting ESPN College Football GameDay in the morning, No. 5 Utah was blasted 47-7 by No. 3 TCU before the second-largest crowd in Rice-Eccles Stadium history (46,522). The Utes got down 20-0 in the first quarter and never found a rhythm against the country’s top-ranked defense, earning just 11 first downs and converting on only 3-of-13 third down attempts. Matt Asiata had Utah’s only touchdown of the day, making a one-handed grab of a Jordan Wynn pass four minutes into the final quarter and with Utah trailing 40-0. DeVonte Christopher returned from a one-game injury absence to catch six passes for 73 yards. Chaz Walker’s career-high 18 tackles led the Ute defense, which coughed up 558 yards to the Frogs.
SOUTH BEND— Utah lost to Notre Dame 28-3 in its first-ever game against the Irish. Joe Phillips made a 46-yard field goal on Utah’s first possession to give the Utes a 3-0 lead. Despite failing to get a first down in the first quarter, Notre Dame went up 7-3 after blocking Sean Sellwood’s punt and taking it in for a touchdown. The Irish tacked on seven points in the second quarter and 14 more in the third, while holding Utah without a touchdown for the first time since 2007. The Utes struggled mightily on offense, turning the ball over twice, going 4-of-15 on third down attempts and 0-for-2 in the red zone. The defense fared better, allowing just 13 Notre Dame first downs, 256 total yards and two (of 10) third down conversions. Matt Martinez led the defense with nine tackles.

Game 12 Nov. 27 #20/23/22 Utah 17, Brigham Young 16 Salt Lake City Rice-Eccles Stadium [45,272]
SAN DIEGO— Utah came back from a 20-3 second quarter deficit to beat San Diego State 38-34 in a thriller in Qualcomm Stadium. Jordan Wynn passed for a career-high 362 yards, including second quarter touchdown passes of 57 yards to Luke Matthews and a 47-yard Hail Mary to Kendrick Moeai. The pass to Moeai as time expired sent Utah into the locker room trailing by just three points, 27-24. The Aztecs regained the lead with the only score of the third quarter, but Utah held a 14-0 advantage in the fourth quarter on touchdown runs by Matt Asiata and Eddie Wide. Greg Bird set up Asiata’s touchdown by blocking a punt that Christian Cox returned to the SDSU 3-yard line. Brian Blechen secured the victory with a leaping interception in the end zone. Earlier interceptions came from Brandon Burton (along with a team-high seven tackles) and Chaz Walker.
SALT LAKE CITY—Brandon Burton blocked a field goal attempt on the last play of the game and Utah earned a come-from-behind 17-16 victory over Brigham Young on Nov. Matt Martinez had a career-high 17 tackles, Brian Blechen had seven tackles, a sack, an interception and a pass breakup, and Burton batted down three passes in addition to his gamewinning block.
