UTAH Swimming and Diving Utah swimming and diving is in full swing of their 2013-14 season, and has already had winning results to start the year. Utah welcomed new head coach Joe Dykstra and assistant Michelle Lowry to the swimming and diving staff at the beginning of the year. Head diving coach Richard Marschner and assistant coaches Jonas Persson, James Winchester, and Tami Johnson all return to the staff. “We are excited for a great season here at Utah,” said Dykstra. “We have a lot of great talent within the program, as well as an experienced coaching staff. We look forward to having our most successful season ever, while also representing the University with pride, passion and class. Although the season is young, we have made an excellent start. The women have started the season well, with wins vs. Oregon State and an upset win over No. 19 Boise State, while dropping a meet to Arizona, which finished fifth in the NCAA last season. The men have also started well, beating Colorado Mesa, as well as upsetting Arizona, which finished third at last year’s NCAA Championships. We have a long way to go though, and look forward to excellent showings at the Missouri Invitational, USA Swimming Short Course Nationals, Pac-12 Championships and NCAA Championships”. Leading the Utah women this season will be returners Nicole Ligeza, Petra Soininen, Traycie Swartz and Kersten Merry. On the men’s side, Bence Kiraly, Kristian Kron, Nick Soedel and Josiah Purss are expected to lead the effort. The Utes welcomed 23 student athletes, hailing from seven different states and four different countries, to the team for the 2013-14 season, including 14 women and nine men. “I am very pleased with the performances from our teams so far,” said Dykstra. “I am proud of our student athletes and their commitment in the classroom, community and in the pool. Their effort and enthusiasm has been exceptional and I look forward to us maintaining this high level throughout the season.

SEASON OUTLOOK Utah Women

The women’s Pac-12 2012-13 season came to a close with the Utes placing seventh at the Pac-12 Championships. The Utes finished off the season 6-5 overall with a 2-4 record in conference match ups. This season, the team came out on top against Oregon State and Boise State, but still has some tough competition ahead with UCLA, USC and BYU still to come. There are many swimmers that will be contributing to what is expected to be a very successful season. Senior Nicole Ligeza was a NCAA’B’ qualifier last year and is a school record holder in the 200 breaststroke. Sophomore Petra Soininen also swam an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time in the 200 butterfly last year and is a member of the Finland National Team. Senior Traycie Swartz is a school record holder in 50 & 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and is a former U.S. Junior National Team member. Kersten Merry earned one of two alternate spots for the NCAA Diving Championships last season. At the NCAA Zone ‘E’ Diving Championships, Merry placed fifth on tower, sixth on the 3-meter and ninth on the 1-meter. Key newcomers who will contribute to the season include Stina Colleau, who is a member of the Norwegian National Team and holds Norwegian national records. Collegeswimming.com ranked her the No. 63 recruit coming into this season. Amanda Barrett, transfer swimmer from San Diego State, will also be an asset to the team. She was a part of the Mountain West Conference Championship team with SDSU and earned All-MWC honors. The women’s squad began their 2013-14 season at Oregon State where they beat the Beavers 165-95. Swartz and Soininen each claimed two individual wins, while Colleau added two as well to open up her collegiate career. The next time out, the Utes came up short against one of their toughest competitors, Arizona, before defeating Boise State, 118-112.

UTAH Swimming and Diving

The latest chapter in Ute athletics history began on July 1, 2011, when Utah officially became a member of the Pac-12 Conference. But Utah’s reputation as an athletics power was established long before it joined the “Conference of Champions.” Football is 628-435-31 in its 119-year history. In the mid-1990s, the Utes evolved from a conference contender to a national force and they now play to sold-out crowds in 45,017-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium. The original “BCS Buster,” Utah is 2-0 in BCS bowl games with wins over Alabama (2009 Sugar Bowl) and Pittsburgh (2005 Fiesta Bowl). The Utes won nine consecutive bowl games from 1999-2009, tying for the second-longest bowl win streak in NCAA history and the longest since Florida State won a record 11 straight from 1985-96. Utah has finished in the nation’s Top 25 six times, including a No. 2 ranking in 2008 and a No. 4 finish in 2004. Men’s Basketball has thrived throughout its history, winning an NCAA Championship in 1944 and finishing as the NCAA runner-up in 1998. Utah, which also won national championships in 1916 (AAU) and 1947 (NIT), has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 nine times. The Utes rank in the top 15 in the nation in all-time victories (1,685) and sixth in regular-season conference titles (29). Utah’s 27 NCAA Tournament appearances and 35 NCAA Tournament wins rate among the top 25 programs. Women’s Gymnastics boasts 10 national championships and eight runner-up finishes. Utah is the only school to qualify for all 32 NCAA Gymnastics Championships and has captured the most

UTAH ATHLETICS HISTORY

All-America awards. Utah holds every gymnastics attendance record, averaging more than 11,000 fans a home meet for the past 22 years and nearly 14,000 over the past four years. In fact, Utah won its third NCAA women’s all-sports season attendance title in 2013, averaging 14,349 fans to its home meets. Women’s Basketball has averaged over 20 wins a season since its start back in 1974-75. The Ute women have received 17 NCAA Tournament invites since 1982—advancing to the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once. They have won 22 conference championships. Utah was the WNIT runner-up in 2013. The Men’s and Women’s Ski Team has captured 10 NCAA Championships, including five in the 1980s and three in the 1990s. Volleyball has participated in 10 of the last 15 NCAA Tournaments with two Sweet 16 finishes. Softball has qualified for the postseason 18 times (13 NCAA) and has five College World Series appearances (four NCAA). Women’s Soccer has played in the NCAA Tournament in five of the last 11 years. Baseball won the 2009 Mountain West Conference tournament and claimed two victories at the NCAA Regional. Other Ute athletic highlights include: Men’s Tennis (24 conference championships), Women’s Tennis (three-consecutive NCAA appearances from 2010-12), Men’s Swimming and Diving (24 conference championships), Women’s Swimming and Diving (2006 MWC champion) and Women’s Cross Country (1981 AIAW Division II National Champion).

Two No. 1 PICKS In THE SAME Year Utah made NCAA history in 2004-05 when it became the only school ever to produce a No. 1 NFL and NBA draft pick in the same year. Quarterback Alex Smith was taken by the San Francisco 49ers and center Andrew Bogut went to the Milwaukee Bucks.
