WHAT IS AN EXECUTIVE MBA?

The class schedule allows students to continue working while they pursue their studies and apply what they learn to their profession. Additionally, students bring their current and prior experience into the classroom to enrich the learning experience of their peers.
Real-time & innovative education: Apply what you learn in class to advance in current and future careers.

THE EMBA FOR HEALTH CARE MBA
VS MHA
While education in health care teaches you about medical practices and how to apply them, it doesn’t provide in-depth knowledge on the managerial, analytical, negotiation, and leadership skills necessary for career advancement within the industry. An EMBA can provide health care professionals with these skills and much more, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of business processes, advance your career, become a stronger leader of your organization, or start your own practice.
When seeking career advancement in the health care industry, it is common to debate between pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a Master of Health Care Administration (MHA). Although the MHA curriculum is specific to health care, many choose to pursue an MBA due to the extensive opportunities and broader skill set it provides. Hear from University of Utah EMBA students that are now leaders in the health care industry on why they chose to pursue an MBA:
Tom Varghese, Ph.D.
Executive Medical Director & Chief Value Officer, Huntsman Cancer Institute
“I’ve been an attending thoracic surgeon for 14 years, and I’m constantly surrounded by outstanding individuals in health care. I wanted an opportunity to start picking the brains of classmates and talents beyond the same people that I see each and every day. I wanted to learn the core principles of business, but more so, I wanted to engage with people beyond health care.”
Mike Rogers
Chief Administrator, Department of Pediatrics, University of Utah Health
“I wanted a broader skill set. Because things change so rapidly in health care, I thought that if I went into the MHA program, I could be learning things that would be obsolete soon. I could go into a different field tomorrow based on the skills I received in Utah’s EMBA program.”
WILL AN EMBA FIT IN MY SCHEDULE?
In health care, schedules are often hectic and can be unpredictable. Luckily, the University of Utah’s EMBA is tailored to busy executives, making it possible to complete the program without stopping or interrupting work.
Predictable
The fixed schedule for the entire program is available online, allowing students to plan work, travel, and personal commitments far in advance.
Manageable
Class is held every other weekend, on campus, Friday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Flexible
Students can join class virtually or watch recordings of missed classes if work or another commitment prevents them from joining in person.
While I try to attend in person as much as possible, if I get called into the hospital for a high-level meeting, I can still connect virtually to the class itself, and all the classes are recorded. The schedule has really helped me out, and you’re matched with classmates and team members who are all equally as busy. They completely understand that there may be a week where you’re not able to do as much, but since you’re working with amazing team members, everybody pitches in.

Hear again from health care professionals about their experience in the program:
I could probably call 75% of my 60-person cohort, and they would drop anything to do anything for me. The close-knit community that we had within one classroom was unmatched. Classes were filled with lively debates, and everybody felt comfortable saying what they wanted to. On top of that, my experience with my team throughout the program really relaid the groundwork for how group work is supposed to happen for me.
Mike Rogers Chief Administrator, Department of Pediatrics, University of Utah Health
While you typically work with your team throughout the program, I was able to network with others in the cohort by having lunch with them or sitting with them in classes. You ultimately find that you get to establish great relationships with all of your classmates.
