DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: A BUSINESS APPROACH Overview Examine diversity management from a strategic, integrative framework. In this course, you will examine the foundation of diversity management including a discussion of the legal aspects of diversity management, diversity management organizational paradigms, and specific diversity business case studies. Additionally, you will practice communication skills for managing critical diversity workplace conversations. You will examine your organization in light of the components of a strategic integrative model of diversity management which include: authentic leadership commitment, clear organizational communication, inclusive recruitment practices, long-term retention strategies, the incorporation of diversity into the main work of the organization, diversity management metrics, and expansive external relationships. Within the framework of this integrated diversity model, you will define each component, illustrate how top diversity management organizations enact best practices of each component, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of how organizations implement each component. You will leave the course with your own strategic diversity plan tailored to your organization. Topics Covered • • • • •

Featured Faculty | Dr. Kathryn Cañas Dr. Kathryn Cañas is a member of the Management Department in the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. Her teaching currently includes courses on managing diversity, business communication, and pedagogical theories and practices on both undergraduate and graduate levels. Her teaching has included courses on rhetorical criticism and theory, public speaking and persuasion, interpersonal communication and coaching, written communication, gender and communication, and writing for publication.
