NEW IN 2010 Camp & Ride at Yuba State Park

Off-highway vehicle (OHV) riders can now take advantage of camp and ride access at Yuba State Park.

Can You Keep a Secret? Many people know about Hailstone Recreation Area at Jordanelle State Park. But just a bit farther south and east where the Provo River enters Jordanelle Reservoir, you’ll find Rock Cliff Recreation Area, a well-kept secret. Walk the boardwalks that span the Provo River and rest in the shade of tall cottonwood trees. Bring a picnic and listen to the river current or the call of a red-tail hawk. Visit the Nature Center, which reveals the flora and fauna or Rock Cliff. Camp overnight and rediscover the stars in the night sky. According to resident expert and park naturalist Kathy Donnell, these are a few things that make Rock Cliff special. - Rock Cliff is a hidden treasure; a peaceful place where you can relax, explore and get back to nature. - Clean water makes Rock Cliff a special place. As water cycles between land, lake and atmosphere, it forms an important link between the terrestrial and aquatic worlds. - Wildlife can thrive at Rock Cliff by finding what they need to survive: Food, water, shelter and space.

A baby raccoon is among the many wild creatures stopping by the Rock Cliff Nature Center.

- Rock Cliff is a riparian community with much diversity making it an important place for plants and animals. - Rock Cliff is a place that encourages respect and responsibility for our natural world. While each season offers a different experience, springtime is ideal for viewing a variety of birds and mammals as they migrate back to the area or pass through making their way farther north. Spring runoff typically peaks in May and the vast amount of water that comes through Rock Cliff is amazing. For more information about Rock Cliff at Jordanelle State Park, please call us at (435) 782-3030. For camping reservations call (801) 322-3770 or toll-free outside Salt Lake at 800322-3770 or visit stateparks.utah.gov.

OHV riders may now ride their machines to and from developed campsites to access nearby OHV routes to the west and southeast of Yuba Reservoir. Stay tuned! Future plans include the possibility of connecting these trails to the popular Arapien and Paiute ATV trail systems. Utah State Parks certified more than 10,000 youth in OHV and PWC education classes. These youth practicing safe, low impact techniques contributed to a 40%* drop in OHV and PWC accidents statewide. *Utah State Parks Statistics

Get Online Before Getting On Board Or On the Trail Utah’s state-required youth off-highway vehicle (OHV) and personal watercraft (PWC) education courses are now online at stateparks.utah.gov. OHV/PWC Education Coordinator Ann Evans reports the new online education system provides easier access to courses and allows students to learn at their

own pace. The OHV course is $30 and covers ATVs, off-highway motorcycles (OHMs) and side-by-side ATVs. The PWC course, which covers JetSki and SeaDoo-type boats, is $34.95. Upon successful completion of the course, students print a temporary certificate valid for 60 days and later receive a permanent certificate by mail. Students should study all materials prior to taking the test because those who do not pass, must pay a second registration fee and retake the test. Utah law requires youth eight

to 16 to complete the Utah State Parks Know Before You Go! OHV Education Course before operating a machine on public lands, roads or trails. It is illegal for any child under age eight to operate an OHV on public land. Utah youth, 12 to 17 years of age, are required to complete and pass the Utah PWC Education Course in order to operate PWC without an adult on board. Children who are younger than 12, may not operate a PWC without a responsible adult on board. For more information, visit stateparks.utah.gov or call (800) OHV-RIDE or (800) RIDE PWC.

Utah State Parks is partnering with 77 libraries statewide to make Annual Park Passes free for checkout - Visit your local library and check it out!

More than half of the 2010 Rockin’ Utah programs are full, but great opportunities remain. Check out the Rockin’ Utah page for an updated schedule at stateparks.utah.gov/rockin-utah. More and more children are spending less time outdoors, even here in Utah, which has more spectacular scenery and play areas than just about anywhere. In 2008, Utah State Parks joined a national movement to get children and their families unplugged from video games, television and other electronics and instead, exploring our great outdoors.
