ON TH E E D G E : Y Y Z > N R T M.ARCH THESIS | Spring 2013 ADVISOR | George Baird MIX-USE STUDENT RESIDENCE TOKYO, JAPAN 4936 m 2 This thesis aims to explore the boundaries between a city and its parks. In particular, it investigates the transfer of Toronto’s expertise in culturally responsive programs and environment-conscious building tectonics to the urban fabric of Tokyo. Yoyogi Park, one of the largest and most popular parks in the metropolis of Tokyo, is situated between two major downtown cores, Shibuya and Shinjuku, located to its north and south. The park is widely accessible and can be reached by an expressway, two major roads, two train lines and one subway line. The site is along the east edge of the park, where there currently stands a public parking lot. The proposed design reinvents the traditional parking program and aims to reactivate both spatial and social interaction, specifically between local residents and visitors, and between Japanese youth and international exchange students. Internal programs include the establishment of a tourist center and student hostel, which broadens the cultural spectrum of the site, while external programs include an agora theatre and parking space that creates a smooth contour transition between nature and built forms. The goal of this thesis is to explore the different lessons learned in two global cities, and apply them across borders, from Toronto to Tokyo. To that end, the proposed infrastructure exemplifies landscape urbanism ideas and optimizes the systematic flow between a park and the rest of the city.

The parking lot currently provides visitors with accessible parking space, and hosts outdoor activities for the local residents. The park’s entry points have the potential to harmonize the dichotomies of an urban cityscape like Tokyo and the hill topography of the park. However, the site is currently covered in flat concrete and fenced off around its perimeter. It is therefore an underutilized urban space that offers great opportunities for re-activation.

PHYSICAL MODEL (1:500) A 3D print model was created to capture the boundary condition of the site between the park and the city. The combination of a skinny highdensity residential building and andulating park system with packed public programs creats a new typology of landscape urbanism in the metropolis of Tokyo.

TORONTO, CANADA 76 m 2 This project was part of the Laneway Housing series featured on the Spacing Toronto website in March 2012. The Super Narrow Student Housing project was inspired by a Toronto Police house-bust that took place at Yonge St. x Wellesley St. in September 2011. Police discovered 90 international students illegally living under one roof, and all of the students were evicted immediately. However, the occurrence raised the issue of a lack of housing options in the downtown area, a dire need for the city of Toronto given the growing number of international students seeking economical and efficient housing for long term stay.

Can we design a purposefully-narrow house for these international students? Will this provide some function to the abandoned laneway spaces in the city, and also establish a new typology of architecture in Toronto? The laneway housing proposal sought to address the issue of urban densification for a specific clientele, with the hope of spurring interaction between visitors and locals.

The project won the ASCA Collaborative Practice Award 2011-2012 and Progressive Architecture Citation Awards 2012. It was selected by the Ministry of Tourism Morocco and will be realized in 2013. “The Ain Nsissa project is a collaborative applied research which tests a model for desert eco-tourism that promotes low impact construction while improving environmental and socio-economic living conditions of local nomads, the Beni Guil.” - Designing Ecological Tourism website The project plan for Ain NSissa Eco Facilities include: • Economically sustainable and manageable project plan • Nature reserve for Mouflons (wild sheep from local area) in the mountains of Ain Nsissa desert • Tourism master plan with heterotopic network of nomads willing to house tourists. • Housing typologies that upgrade existing and new buildings for the three different types of nomadic lifestyles: Shifting, SemiShifting and Fixed Locations

The project aimed to combine landscape as part of the urban form. Rigorous mapping of the site was conducted including fog and seasonal analysis, and the zigzag shape was developed based on the most optimal “view spots�. The building interior was programmed in a way such that users are strategically guided through the building in a flowing motion while maximizing their view of the Niagara Falls.

The Junction Community Gym was designed as part of Comprehensive Studio. The site, located at the gateway of the Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood, accommodates three programs: a fitness centre, public area (shops, cafes, reading room and a basketball court) and the physical therapy clinic.

The main concept of the building design revolves around three courtyards. The courtyard typology was chosen as a catalyst for the integration of passive systems that would provide resources for the environmental controls of the building as well as a pleasant atmosphere for users.

The intensive project looked at the entire building process, including: concept development, program analysis, structures, building science, acoustics, lighting, building code, cost analysis, material selection, section details and models (site, working, detail section and final presentation models).
The stripe cladding of the grymnanisum allows for light and air to moderately enter the interior of the building structure. The lifting of the facade system at the three entrances is a gesture to fit into the active and social urban facric of teh surrounding neighbourhood.

The Yonge Street Cinema Tower was a proposal for a mixeduse, pencil-tower residential building at the intersection of Yonge St. x Steeles Ave. in North York, Toronto. Students were assigned a real micro site in North York with the design intention of urban densification and cultural reactivation. Working closely with Leo Desorci (Urban Design Manager, City of North York) and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto (Atelier Bow Wow, Tokyo), early research involved an investigation of Japanese pencil-tower typology and its potential application in the suburban conditions of North America.
5585 Yonge Street | Theatre + Residence Tower
The proposed building has two separate entrances at ground level. The public entrance leads to an independent film theatre, where floating cinema boxes create a unique viewing experience for visitors and street pedestrians. The private entrance leads to a residential tower, where each floor has two micro units (560 sqft), with two means of egress for every unit. The mixed-use functionality is enhanced by the use of underground elevator parking, a new technology for condominiums in the City of Toronto.

The project aimed to design the new architecture school, based on the masterplan scheme developed in the earlier part of the course. Theoretical readings lead to the discovery of the Cerda Plan (Barcelona) as the most efficient urban design, leading to a radical and new figure-ground for the City of Toronto. The final building uses form and material that anticipates durability and decay within the longterm fabric of the city.

“ Everyone needs at least one amazing pair of jeans. At least one pair of custom made, just-for-you jeans. At least one pair of Crft. jeans.”
This project was completed as part of a business proposal course, to take design opportunities into the world of entrepreneurship. The business proposal seeks to promote bespoke (custom made) jeans, using 3D technology, eco-concious fashion and the image of “Toronto” as its main appeal. The proposal draws up a detailed plan and cost analysis of setting up a flagship store. Future plans for the business includes expanding the brand using pop-up stores and mobile stores to rural regions, and to spread its brand to the rest of Canada.

S C R EEN E F F E C T M.ARCH 2 | Fall 2010 PROF | Shane Williamson GROUP WORK CNC PRODUCTION INSTALLATION Screen Effect is a one-to one scale prototype of a fabricated façade system. The project aimed to use 3D modelling software as a design tool and to construct it in real life. Rhino was used to digitally model façade system of “peeling curves”. The CNC was used to cut a portion of the system out of 1 inch plywood. The frames were assembled through joint connection (no glue or nail) into a full standing screen. The result is a prototype that could be combined and assembled in different ways for wall installation at all scales.

CI TY O F S H E N Y A N G M A ST E R P LA N INTERNSHIP | Summer 2010 FIRM | Kajima Design, Tokyo Japan INTERNATIONAL URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION SHENYANG, CHINA 5000 Ha The project won the City of Shenyang International Urban Design Competition 2010. The project was part of my internship experience at Kajima Design in the summer of 2010. Following the lead of the principle architect, Toyohiko Arakawa, the masterplan scheme was developed with greater consideration for transportation and green space. The plan also incorporates the clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request for an iconic city centre with symbolic gestures of water. The masterplan was initially developed through series of charretts and hand sketches, which was then transferred into a digital map in Vectorworks. Foam massing models of the site was made, which was then transferred into 3d models also in Vectorworks. The final model, outsourced to a model specialist. was made of plexiglass at the scale of 1:1000. The plan served as a kick-off scheme and has since evolved into a fullscale urban planning project for Kajima.
The masterplan was appoved by the Liaoning Provincial Government and officially announced on the local newspaper in July 2010.

HA R TF O RD P L A N N I N G INTERNSHIP | Summer 2012 FIRM | Utile, Inc., Boston MA CITY OF HARTFORD PLANNING STUDY HARTFORD, CT 46.5 km 2 The planning study was part of my internship experience at Utile Inc. in the summer of 2012. Utile has been selected by the City of Hartford Department of Development Services to develop a comprehensive redevelopment plan for Hartford North Park. The goal of the future of North Park is to better integrate this part of the city into a larger regional and intergovernmental approach to planning, and to continue to create sustainable and livable communities. As a member of the urban design team, I assisted in elegantly presenting plans that use smart regulatory tools, based on zoning and design guidelines, and producing compelling graphic renderings to create a vision of North Park. Comprehensive mapping, 3D model making and urban design graphic making as well as series of meetings with the City of Hartford experts were some of the tasks involved in this study.

FIRS T+ F I RS T T O WN HOM E S INTERNSHIP | Summer 2012 FIRM | Utile, Inc., Boston MA CONDOMINIUM DOCUMENT BOSTON, MA 22 Units, 2091 sqft / Unit The condominium document preparation was part of my internship experience at Utile Inc. in the summer of 2012. First + First is a development of 22 single-family row houses proposed for a site on the boundary between traditional South Boston and the industrial waterfront. Each house consists of loft-like spaces that can be interpreted in a variety of bedroom/home office/family room scenarios, complete with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The corner units are specially designed to contribute to the existing social fabric of the existing neighborhood, as a gesture to the larger urban fabric. I assisted the team towards the end of the project completion, which consisted of frequent site visits to check and punch list the final stages of construction. I put measured and put together the condominium documents which were later signed by the principal architect and submitted to the City of Boston as the official document.
