Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation The Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation was founded in 2000 to create more voters and better citizens through innovation in research, engagement, and education. The institute works within communities to engage people in the political process, teach them about the nation’s democratic heritage, and encourage them to take leadership roles. The institute is named after Annette Greenfield Strauss, an extraordinary woman who served on the Dallas City Council from 1983-1987 and then as mayor from 1987-1991. The work of the institute strives to honor her remarkable public service and philanthropy. (www.communication.utexas.edu/strauss)
GeoFORCE Texas The Jackson School’s GeoFORCE Texas addresses the critical need to increase opportunities for historically underrepresented women and minorities in careers in science, mathematics, and technology. This innovative program is designed to encourage students from minority-serving high schools in inner-city Houston and rural southwest Texas to take on the challenges of a rigorous math and science curriculum and pursue higher education and careers in these fields. Summer Academies and fieldtrips introduce students to the basic concepts of the geosciences, engineering, and mathematics. (www.jsg.utexas.edu/geoforce)
University of Texas Elementary School UT Elementary is a public charter school that provides an innovative approach to elementary education for underserved families in East Austin. The school maintains its high standards by targeting instruction to the needs of each individual student and encouraging parental involvement through a signed contract. School staff focus on the whole child — mind, body, and spirit — by providing important social supports and emphasis on proper nutrition and exercise. UT Elementary serves as a model school by sharing best practices with community partners and schools, as well as UT’s teachers-in-training. (www.utelementary.org)
Humanities Institute The Humanities Institute offers interdisciplinary educational opportunities for students, faculty, and the Central Texas community. The institute leads collaborative programs such as distinguished lectures, public reading campaigns, and faculty seminars drawing researchers from across the humanities, arts, and sciences. Supported primarily by the College of Liberal Arts, the institute serves students, faculty, and alumni across campus. Community partners include the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, the Austin Public Library, and the Austin Lyric Opera. (www.humanitiesinstitute.utexas.edu)
The Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice The Rapoport Center promotes critical analysis and practice of international human rights, both locally and globally. Housed within the School of Law, the center engages multiple disciplines in the study of economic and political enfranchisement. The center provides students, faculty, and community members with programs focusing on areas such as immigration and asylum, and health and human rights. In 2008-2009, the center marked its five-year anniversary with the annual Human Rights at UT Conference, which focused on how UT campuses are involved in human-rights issues through teaching, advocacy, and research. Neighborhood Longhorns Program The Neighborhood Longhorns Program is a nonprofit, incentivebased learning program that provides economically disadvantaged youth in Austin schools with the resources to build a strong academic future. UT Austin students volunteer thousands of hours each year as tutors, gaining valuable teaching and mentoring experience while helping to transform the lives of at-risk students. More than $500,000 in scholarships has been awarded to children since the program began, placing them on the path to achieving their college dreams. (www.nlp.utexas.edu)
