History of UTC

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was founded in 1886 under the name Chattanooga University. In 1889, the University was combined with Grant University. Eighteen years later, Grant University became the University of Chattanooga. The University remained private for 83 years until it joined the University of Tennessee system in 1969 to form the UTC campus. UTC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and is dedicated to helping students succeed in

their academic and personal endeavors by providing a nurturing environment, a welcoming community, and invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth.

The Center for Global Education plays an important role in fullfilling UTC's mission to "achieve… excellence by actively engaging students, faculty and staff; embracing diversity and inclusion; inspiring positive change; and enriching and sustaining our community.”
