This fall, a sense of community awaits every incoming UTC freshman from Day 1.

Welcome to Cohort 25

ACE

New students are registered for an academic class cohort in their major curriculum with a small group of like-minded students.

Students living in the same campus residential complex join a cohort supported by either a member of faculty-in-residence in that complex or by a faculty member from their majors. Together, they live and learn how to be successful Mocs.

ACADEMICS

CONNECTIONS

Students have access to join student organizations based on their backgrounds or interests. Students also can self-identify with select focus groups (military veterans, firstgeneration students, students with autism and more) to receive additional support. EXPERIENCES

What’s Your Type Academic Learning Community Register for an academic community and be part of a group built around your major. Students in academic cohorts are enrolled in several, but not all, classes together. They get to know students pursuing the same major as part of a built-in community with support for advanced learning.

Residential Learning Community Residential learning communities are unique, inclusive living and learning environments that take education outside the classroom and let students learn where they live. Students learn, build character, mature and grow as individuals while establishing lifelong relationships within a diverse community. These students live on campus, integrate into the campus community and learn to be successful Mocs as a result of a supportive group that includes faculty and staff. Helping Mocs fly higher! More than half of all students living in campus housing made the Dean’s List in fall 2020. In fact, the record-high 54% of residential students on the Dean’s List is up from about 35%. And of those Dean’s List achievers, 38% are freshmen.

What are Faculty Fellows? Faculty Fellows—a new feature of campus life in fall 2021—are designated faculty who will provide support and programming specifically to residential students without living on campus, themselves.

The residential college environment has livein faculty who play an integral role in the programming and leadership of the community.

“Living in the business community I did not just see people in classes but I was able to connect with them on the floor too. Being near each other and everything on campus made it easier to build relationships, study together, and just have fun.” JOHN ADKINS Business Residential College

“Living in Honors you have programs, interactions, and just a greater sense of overall community. We have those common interests and experiences that make it better.” LAKE BEST Honors Residential College

“The part I enjoy about a living learning community is being around individuals with similar interests and pursuing knowledge. We push each other to achieve!” LOLA OKE Honors Residential College

Some residential colleges may include: • Academic department association • Strong partnerships and collaboration between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs • Linked, credit-bearing academic courses • Academic experiences (curricular and/or co-curricular) infused into the residential college • Programming including social events, shared meals and associated facultystudent engagement

COMMUNITY

Campus Connections Students looking to build community with peers in special interest areas or activities will find lots of open doors at UTC. An array of select organizations based on background—such as military veteran or first-generation students—or interests, from intercultural experiences to environmental sustainability, are waiting to welcome Mocs united by purpose and passion. You can also experience firsthand UTC’s unique partnership with our home, Chattanooga, and the University’s extensive outreach and engagement that makes the city part of our campus through experiential learning opportunities of every kind. What is a Themed Living Community? A Themed Living Community (TLC) is not connected to an academic course/discipline but instead builds community and a unique experience around shared interests of residential students. TLC residents participate in events coordinated by their TLC faculty/staff partners and the TLC Resident Advisor.

Residence Hall, Residential College—What’s the Difference? Residence halls have all the programs and support a student needs for a meaningful, on-campus residential experience. Residential colleges offer more opportunities for faculty engagement and programming and the continuity of community that comes with a culture of returning residents and longstanding faculty affiliations.

Residential Colleges Residential colleges range from 40 to 200 students. Some have a single, unifying theme, such as college majors, while others have multiple themes. Each residential college is headed by a faculty member who supports the students. Faculty and student mentors recruit faculty and staff for the fellows program, which supports faculty presence through shared meals in the college, informal presentations known as “firesides” and outings around campus and Chattanooga. Features: • Resident Assistants • Resident Directors • Mentors • Faculty in Residence • Theme-based communities • Living-learning communities • Residential Curriculum (programming) • Peer Mentors

Residence Halls The traditional residence hall on campus houses from as few as 150 students to more than 500. Each building has its own character, spirit and unique advantages. Residence halls are great places to live and meet people from all over the world. Resident Assistants and student leaders from the Residence Hall Association plan frequent programming to help students meet people and succeed academically. Features: • Resident Assistants • Resident Directors • Residential Curriculum • Residence Hall Association (RHA) leaders • Residential Curriculum (programming) • Peer Mentors • 36:1 Student to Resident Assistant ratio
