A LIGHT UPON THE HILL
WHAT IS A MOC?
Since its founding in 1886, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has developed an institutional excellence which rests on an unusual blend of the private and public traditions of American education. For 83 years, the University was a private school. Three years after its founding, the University operated under the name of Grant University. In 1907, the name University of Chattanooga was adopted. In 1969, the University of Chattanooga, Zion College and Chattanooga City College merged with the UT higher education system, to form the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
The student body first referred to themselves as “Mocs” in the early 1900s. In 1996, the University decided to adopt the state bird of Tennessee, the mockingbird, as its new mascot while incorporating the strong regional imagery of Chattanooga’s vast railroad history. The mascot, Scrappy, was born and named after legendary football coach A.C. “Scrappy” Moore. The mockingbird is known as a fierce protector of its nest and environment.
