SUPPORTING THE

Dental Research OF DENTISTRY TODAY

MESSAGE from the SENIOR EXECUTIVE ASSOCIATE DEAN for RESEARCH

Welcome to the Dental Research Newsletter of the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry – just one of the new resources developed to help expand UT’s dental research program.

Whereas the College of Dentistry has traditionally used research to improve human oral health, in recent years, the commitment of the College to the development of evidence-based dentistry – clinically tested procedures, treatments, and technologies – has become much more visible. Currently, the College is working to become a stronger presence in dental research –creating the Bioscience Research Department; hiring more research-oriented faculty and staff; increasing the number of competitive grant applications; and, adding valuable resources and systems to streamline the research process for faculty, postdocs, and students.

Franklin Garcia-Godoy, D.D.S., M.S.

It is my intention with the creation of this quarterly research newsletter to improve the research communication system within the College. This newsletter will serve to increase awareness of current dental research projects and opportunities; act as a vehicle for research collaboration across departments, Colleges, and beyond the UT campus; promote the College of Dentistry’s commitment to the advancement of the health sciences and academia; and, provide recognition to faculty and students for their research contributions. During FY2010, 35% of faculty members were actively engaged in research activities, up 8% from FY2009. In addition, the College held 26 research grants, 16 more than in FY2009. As the research program expands, it should be our common goal to involve more faculty and students in research activities, and increase the amount of grant supported research. The College of Dentistry has reached a tipping point. Through our collaborated effort and continued dedication to research, the UT name will be recognized as a pacesetter, leading innovation in the field of dental research.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: COLLEGE of DENTISTRY DEPARTMENT NAME CHANGES As of July 1, 2010, the following College of Dentistry departments underwent name changes: • • •

Restorative Dentistry is now the Department of Prosthodontics Endodontics is a standalone department Operative Dentistry is new Department of Restorative Dentistry

RENOVATIONS: PHASE TWO

The renovations for the Dunn Dental Building continues. April 2010 marked the completion of Phase One, during which the Department of Pediatrics received a new child-friendly waiting room and the graduate pediatric program received its own designated space, equipped with new chairs, units, cabinetry, and flooring. Phase One also saw the complete renovation of the fourth floor, which houses the predoctoral training clinic.

Phase Two was approved by the State Building Commission in July 2010 and is currently underway. During Phase Two, the Bioscience Research Center will be gutted and designed as a state-of-the-art dental research lab. The third floor will house the University Dental Practice and a new Clinical Research Center. The fifth floor renovations will produce updated clinics for Graduate Prosthodontics and Periodontology. Dental Hygiene, Endodontics, and AEGD will also be housed on the fifth floor.

A special thanks to the Dental Alumni who have helped make these renovations possible. Despite the short-term set-backs that the construction will make, the long-term benefits of this renovation will help distinguish UT as a leader in Dentistry.

DELTA DENTAL of ARKANSAS DONATES $500K to COLLEGE of DENTISTRY Delta Dental of Arkansas just announced a planned donation to the College of Dentistry for the amount of $500,000. This donation will be used to add ten new work stations and make changes to the electronic delivery system in the General Education Building (GEB) pre-doctoral laboratory. This will bring the total number of available stations to 90.

Delta Dental of Tennessee also donated $1.5 million to update the Dental Simulation lab. The new DentSim lab is located in the General Education Building (GEB) and is used by first and second year dental students to gain valuable experience before entering the clinics.

GRADUATE ORTHODONTIC CLINIC GETS NEW LOOK and NEW NAME

The University of Tennessee Orthodontic Alumni announced on May 27th that the new renovations to the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic would be named for Dr. James Vaden, former Chair of the Department of Orthodontics. Dr. Vaden has been a faculty member of the College for 30 years and has served as department chair since 1999. In naming the renovations for him, Dr. Vaden will be remembered by future generations for his efforts to make the program one of the best in the nation. The Orthodontic Alumni also announced that they have raised nearly $700k in commitments to the clinic, which puts the College well on its way to reaching its goal of $750k. 7

Research Spotlight

RESEARCH STUDY HELPS AQUATINE ENDODONTIC CLEANSER RECEIVE FDA APPROVAL Dr. Franklin Garcia-Godoy, Senior Executive Associate Dean for Research, recently had a research article* accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Oral Science. Below is the abstract of that study.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the root canal cleanliness and smear layer removal effectiveness of Aquatine Endodontic Cleanser (Aquatine EC) when used as an endodontic irrigating solution in comparison with 6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl).

Material and Methods: Forty-five human teeth were randomly allocated to five treatment groups; the pulp chamber was accessed, cleaned and shaped by using ProTaper and ProFile rotary instrumentation to an ISO size #40. The teeth were then processed for scanning electron microscopy, and the root canal cleanliness and removal of smear layer were examined. Results: The most effective removal of smear layer occurred with Aquatine EC and NaOCl, both with a rinse of EDTA. (See Figures 1-5 on right).

Conclusions: Aquatine EC appears to be the first hypochlorous acid approved by the FDA to be a possible alternative to the use of NaOCl as an intracanal irrigant. Further research is needed to identify safer and more effective alternatives to the use of NaOCl irrigation in endodontics.

Based on this study by Dr. Murray and Dr. Garcia-Godoy, the FDA approved Aquatine Endodontic Cleanser for market use as an endodontic irrigant. Below is an excerpt from the PuriCore press release announcing receipt of its FDA approval.

“Furthermore, when used in combination with EDTA, Aquatine EC was highly effective at disinfecting tooth root canals contaminated with bacteria when compared to bleach. The independent study, sponsored by PuriCore, was led by Drs. Murray and Garcia-Godoy and conducted by Drs. Garcia, Kuttler, and Namerow at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. In 2006, PuriCore received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allowing it to market its proprietary Aquatine EC endodontic cleanser as a medical device in the United States.
