Peleliu Landing
Sketch, “Going In - First Wave,” Peleliu Landing, Hertzog book collection
Tom Lea (1907 – 2001) was an El Paso artist, muralist, and writer. During WWII, he was a war correspondent and artist for Life magazine. This sketch is included in Lea’s book Peleliu Landing, which was printed by Carl Hertzog in 1945.

Woody Crumbo (1912 – 1989) was a Potawatomi artist and the curator and director of the El Paso Museum of Art during the 1960s. In this October 1966 photograph, he is restoring The Thundering Herd (1919) by Edward Hoslag at the El Paso airport.

El Paso: A Borderlands History

Award-winning El Paso artist and illustrator José Cisneros (1910 – 2009) is best known for his historical drawings of Texas and Mexico. This drawing depicts a scene from the Mexican Revolution. Cisneros also designed the seal for Texas Western College (now UTEP) and illustrated many books published by Texas Western Press during his long and prolific career.

Tripp Map Collection

Many early maps contain artistic elements. This map was created from a copper engraving and then hand-colored. The Tripp map collection dates circa 1600s – 1950s and includes original maps as well as reproductions. The maps are from various locales around the world.

Hal Marcus, an artist and gallery owner, was born in 1951 in El Paso, Texas. His art can be found in the UTEP Library, the El Paso Public Library – Main Branch, Temple Mt. Sinai, the Chamizal National Memorial Theater, and the El Paso County Courthouse. A large print of El Mercado Juárez (1988) hangs in the UTEP Library.

UTEP by William Kolliker
UTEP by William Kolliker, UTEP Library art collection
Born in 1905 in Switzerland, William Kolliker moved to New York City at age 16 and later settled in El Paso. In addition to his career as the art director and art editor of American Weekly, Kolliker particularly enjoyed painting desert landscapes of the southwestern United States. Special Collections houses some of Kolliker’s sketches and scrapbooks in its William Kolliker collection, MS659.

Elsie McElroy Slater (1871?-1952) was a writer, artist, and naturalist. She wrote a column for the El Paso Herald and authored two books: El Paso Birds and Thirteen Ferns of the Mexican Border at El Paso. Slater was the first El Pasoan to collect plant specimens in El Paso.

Born in Spain, Urbici Soler (1890-1953) was a renowned sculptor and art professor at the College of Mines (later Texas Western College and UTEP). Soler moved to El Paso in 1937 to create the sculpture Cristo Rey on Mount Cristo Rey, and after a brief absence, decided to make El Paso his permanent home.

This 1999 book includes charcoal drawings by Susan Davidoff and text and a metal cover by Beverly Penn. Thiewes, Davidoff, and Penn all taught in the UTEP Art Department. The metal and slate forms are comprised of silver, 18K yellow gold, and carved slate.

Eugene B. Thurston (1896 – 1993) painted landscapes of the southwestern United States for more than 70 years. He also ran a greeting card business that sold cards with his artwork on them for many years. Since the late 1920s, he was active in organizing El Paso’s arts community and was a founding member of the El Paso Arts Guild, Far Southwest Artists, and the El Paso Arts Association.

Margarita “Mago” Orona Gándara (1929 – 2018) was a celebrated artist of the El Paso – Ciudad Juárez Borderlands. Gándara was known for incorporating Borderlands themes and Aztec mythology into her murals and sculptures. This calendar features art and artists from the C.L. Sonnichsen Special Collections Department’s archival holdings. In addition to managing the UTEP Library’s art collection, Special Collections contains papers from local artists and collections relating to El Paso art.
