Success. It's born of aspiration, nurtured with support and accomplished with perseverance.
This spring, nearly 2,500 Miners reached an important milestone on that road to success, graduating from The University ofTexas at El Paso fully prepared to do great things for themselves and for their communities.
That number is a record, a "testament to the success of our students in meeting the high standards that we have set for chem ," says Pres ident Diana Natalicio, speaking about the University's need to host three commencement ceremonies to accommodate the increase in the number of graduates and the family and friends who fill the Don Haskins Center to share in their success.
"S ince our establishment in 1914 as the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy, the pursuit of excellence has been at the core of our miss ion, " Natalicio says
To dace , more rhan 90,000 students have earned their degrees from this institution, as it grew from the School of Mines co Texas College of Mines, Texas Western College and now, UTEP.
"You, our graduates , are the real proof of the quality of this university," Natalicio says. "Your futures will reflect chis institution 's level of academic rigor and attainment."
As has become tradition, Natalicio asks those graduates who are parents or grandparents, the first in their families co graduate, or who have had to work while they pursue their studies, to stand. With the students on their feet, she points ou c chat these college graduates have demonstrated not just talent and intellect , but also dedication beyond measure
"Yo u have studied with us on a campus where the dreams and the realities of society - both here in the El Paso border region and in the world beyond - are sharply focused. Here, men and women from an unusually wide variety of background s, ages, interests, and cultures have learned much from each other," Nacalicio says
Nacalicio ended her s peech by challenging and inspiring students to take the nex t step.
"Go out from this commencementthis beginning - and use what you have learned he re to the fullest."

UTEP SOFTBALL GIVES BACK
by A ngela Olivas
The UTEP softball team has enjoyed a great deal of success on the diamond, blasting home runs and toppling top-ranked opponents. One could argue, however, chat the Miners have made an even bigger mark off the playing field.
The softball team is a three-time recipient of the UTEP Athletic Director's Service Award, presented to the team with the most community service hours.
" Being able to give back helps us stay gtounded," says sophomore pitcher Claudia Oliva, who has dedicated more than 30 hours to community service chis year. " We learn the basic foundations of life , how to be caring, how to be generous and how to connect with others."
As a team, the squad has put in more than 450 hours of community service.
" We go to schools and teach kids about the importance of tean1work, academics and being active chtough sports," says Oliva.
The children, however, aren't the only ones who learn from the visits.
"You see things that you cake for granted," Oliva says. "So metimes it 's hard to imagine what these kids go through every day. le makes you appreciate what you have and gives you the opportunity to put smiles on their faces. That is che greatest rewardseeing chem smile."
The team has donated its time to helping various organizations , including the Miracle League of El Paso, Boys & Girls Clubs of El Paso, and YWCA Afterschool Programs.
UTEP Life Skills Coordinatot Darnell Talbert especially is appreciative of the tean,'s vo lunt eer efforts.
"The softball team is an outstanding group of young women," he says. "All year long, they have been very instrumental in our community outreach events. Life Skills expresses to our studentachleces the importance of giving back to chose who support the Miners. The softball team has been a great ambassador not only for ocher spores teams, but for the entire athletic department. "

CREAT I VE K I DS
by Laura L. Acosta
UTEP alumni Andrea Gates-Ingle and her husband Stephen P. Ingle are helping children who are disabled, underprivileged and critically ill Aourish through arc.
The couple established Creative Kids Inc., a nonprofit educational community-based arc agency, in 1999 Under their guidance, thousands of children have learned co express themselves chcough painting, graphic design, print making, sculpture and photography.
"Our students use arc co communicate if they're not feeling well, or co express their talent," says Ingle, Creative Kids artistic director. He earned his bachelor's degree in studio arc graphic design in 2004.
Creative Kids was conceived after Gates-Ingle asked Stephen co paint a mural with her special-needs students at Canucillo Middle School, where she served as a student-teacher.
"As they were painting, we saw something light up inside chem," remembers Gates-Ingle, who received her bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies in 1999. ''Arc was a medium we could use co help kids "
The organization was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arcs in 2006 as a model program for its work with pediatric cancer patients at El Paso 's Providence Memorial Hospital. The Ingles also work with youth from Region 19's Migrant Education pcogram, the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso and che El Paso Juvenile Probation Department.
In 2007, Creative Kids opened the OLO Gal lery and Creative Kids Art Studios, where students disp lay their artwork and learn culinary skills in a fully equipped kitchen.
To help support che organization's programs, the Ingles in December launched an apparel line featuring che students ' artwork on organically made T-shircs, sweacshircs and canvas bags. They also have designed aviation-themed artwork for bags, which are available at che El Paso Internacional Airport's gift shops. If all goes well, they expect co have their pcoduccs in 86 gift shops across the nation.
"UTEP caught me co chink outside the box," says Ingle. "I learned co solve problems by looking at things differently and coming up with good ideas."
