The dark web is as ominous as it sounds Margaret Cataldi The Prospector The internet is a vast and seemingly endless place, more immense than most people can even comprehend. Yet the common user has only explored about 1% of its total content. The remaining 99% is what is known as the deep web.

The vast content is only accessible via a special browser and within its depths lies the infamous “black market” of the internet known as the dark web. In it, every sort of illegal paraphernalia imaginable lies at the user’s fingertips just a few clicks away.

Special Agent Alex Bustillos of the El Paso Federal Bureau of Investigation uses the analogy of an iceberg to explain the deep web.

“What you see above the ocean’s surface is essentially the internet that’s known today,” Bustillos said.

The tip of the iceberg peeking out above the surface can be compared to the sites that we tend to access daily, such as Amazon, Facebook, Google and YouTube.

“Right below that is your deep web and the deep web is where you’re going to find financial records, medical records, criminal records — things that are not typically accessible

In order to access the dark web, a computer requires a specific web browser or “onion browser” called Tor, a software that seeks to provide online privacy and freedom, which can easily be downloaded after a quick Google search. This is so that the IP address can be masked, making it difficult to track the user’s information.

“Like layers of an onion that get peeled away, when you come into the dark web using this special browser, it strips away a layer of your IP address,” Bustillos said. “By the time you exit, your IP address isn’t the same as when you went in.”

The anonymity that Tor provides created the perfect conditions for an ominous yet intricate hub of suspicious online activity.

A popular destination with the dark web is what is known as the “Hidden Wiki.”

This is essentially the internet’s black market in which one can find an endless catalogue of illegal items.

Once you start seeking out illegal items to buy or interacting with people that are trying to sell you illegal items … that’s when it becomes illegal.

Martian first stories from the Magnificent Parallel Introduction: The Magnificent One

Editor’s note: Héctor Noriega Mendoza is an astrophysicist and astronomy professor in UTEP’s physics department. Mendoza recently launched an astronomy research and outreach project at UTEP, “Parallelus Magnificus,” (“The Magnificent Parallel”), which includes a science-fiction component centered on the exploration and colonization of planet Mars. Current and former students of Mendoza’s Astronomy 1307 class, Elementary Astronomy of the Solar System, collaborated with him in the project. The following is an excerpt of the science fiction portion of the project.

Héctor Noriega Mendoza The Prospector The Magnificent Parallel is an imaginary reference line originally defined on Earth’s surface and proposed in 2020 by a group of international scientists and academics.

This line coincides with the 31° 12’ N geographic parallel, which marks the latitude of the historical and multicultural city of Alexandria in northern Egypt. The great Library of Alexandria was the very center of human knowledge in the three centuries prior to and during the Roman Empire’s splendor.

Nowadays (2038) cities, historical sites, sports, cultural and research centers on Earth

whose latitudes are located within a one degreewide band centered on 31° 12’ N, are being said to belong to the Magnificent Parallel (in general simply referred to as The Magnificent One, the city of Alexandria’s parallel).

Such a band is constrained to the north by the 31° 42’ N parallel and to the south by the 30° 42’ N one.

When we arrived on Mars in 2028 as the first group of scientists and technicians, we had the initiative of designating here an analogous reference line to Earth’s Magnificent One. Thus, today there exists a narrow and extraoficially recognized, one degree-wide imaginary band centered on the red planet’s 31° 12’ N latitude.

Three settlements on Mars today are located within the Martian Magnificent Parallel, spanning an important variety of terrains, topographies and soil properties and compositions specific to the distinct Martian longitudes.

Such settlements, provisional and permanent, are the following: the small Acidalia Base, in the southern part of the plain of the same name; the Olympus station, north from the largest dormant volcano of the solar system, and the solid Antoniadi Station north from Syrtis Major, the large dark plain viewed from Earth through a telescope by Huygens in the 17th century.

I am Argos Vallefranco Sanmillán, a Mexican astrophysicist, son of José and Imelda and

grandson of Mónica and Carmen, back there on Earth.

It is in the course of the year 2038 of the Terrestrial Gregorian calendar — Martian 10th year — that I recount the most relevant events occurred here, on planet Mars, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the arrival of the first international expedition of human beings to this world, scientists and technicians today mostly and effectively turned into active colonists.

My chronicle of the successes and failures on the Red Planet since 2028 is, fundamentally, that of an eyewitness scientist and colonist of most of the exploration, research and very incipient terraforming activities on this planet.

It is also the historical record of someone who has been informed in detail of such events by primary and reliable sources, whose information and data are commonly supported by the technical and scientific reports properly submitted to the Council of Martian Exploration, locally and on Earth.

I was appointed official chronicler of the 20282030 first missions and, eventually, with the establishment of the first autonomous Martian base in 2032 — the Antoniadi Station — Mars Chronicler of the now called New Planetary Territories.

I am a doctor of astrophysics from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in

the field of planetary dynamics, and even though I lack a professional training in history, both my doctoral thesis and my Space-X Chronicles of Exquisite Utopias (2015-2025) caught the attention of the Council of Martian Exploration and two of its most influential members.

The council, supported by the international astronomical community, then recommended my assignment, primarily as a researcher and coordinator of the dynamical monitoring of Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) and the moon Phobos from the red planet, but also as Official Chronicler and head of the Martian Historic Registry team.

I was informed I was selected by the council mainly because of my relative neutrality as a scientist and witness of the accomplishments and setbacks in our efforts to go to Mars, not being myself a citizen of nor having a cultural affiliation with any of the leading nations of this colonization project, the United States of America, the European Union and China.

In the private realm I loved, I was loved and a happy man on Earth. My life is a series of satisfactions resulting from two passions cultivated since childhood, astronomy and the record of the events around me.

Students react to local anti-LGBTQ controversy

The Prospector Grace Gardens, an event venue on the western outskirts of El Paso, found itself in the middle of a recent “anti-LGBTQ” business controversy.

On the morning of Sept. 16, Cassandra Castillo posted on Facebook that a representative from Grace Gardens declined to organize wedding services for her “because of the owner’s beliefs.”

The post has more than 350 shares, 600 reactions and 400 comments. Castillo’s post revived sentiments of frustration and shock by the local LGBTQ community on social media.

KVIA reported on a similar case in 2015 and KFOX 14 reported on another case as early as 2013. Both stories connected to Grace Gardens, as well.

“It’s always risky to take a religious stance, or even political, when it comes to running a business,” said Sandra Rodriguez, owner of Grace Gardens. “We believe that anyone with strong convictions on their religious beliefs should be free to exercise those rights. Businesses have a right to be true to their religious convictions.”

Rodriguez is a devout Christian who holds Bible studies at her church and has served as a missionary in other countries. She believes there is “no tolerance for upholding true biblical values.”

Regarding hosting wedding services for couples who have divorced multiple times, Rodriguez said, “We are not the moral police for heterosexual couples. As for same-sex marriage, we see no place for it within the biblical scripture.”

Michael Gutierrez, president of the Queer Student Alliance at UTEP, said Rodriguez is entitled to her right to religious freedom granted by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

“It’s not about forcing Ms. Rodriguez to serve anyone, but rather about her understanding the impact of her beliefs,” Gutierrez said. “It makes people feel unwelcome in their community for being who they are, even though they’ve done nothing wrong.”

Gutierrez believes that marriage equality is a fundamental human right and that it is a controversial topic the nation faces.

“Religious belief can be used as a scapegoat for discrimination,” he said.

According to Americans United, a baker in Colorado and a wedding photographer in Or-

egon both denied services to same-sex couples using their religion as justification, alluding to the Religious Freedom Restoration Act passed

by Congress in 1993.

April Pate, a kinesiology major and member of the UTEP Baptist Student Ministry, explained that Christians do believe that homosexuality is wrong, but that it is like any other sin.

“There are a lot of Christians that go around saying that homosexuals are going to hell and, I mean, that’s true, but technically everyone is destined for hell, too,” Pate said. “Adulterers are

This way, transactions are kept safe in a sort of “vacuum-like” state.

Not everything on the dark web is explicitly illegal, however. In fact, accessing the dark web by itself is perfectly legal.

“I know the name in and of itself kind of lends itself to say, ‘Oh, well it’s the black market, it’s the dark web, so something nefarious is going on.’ Not necessarily,” Bustillos said.

The legality of the situation all depends on what or who the user chooses to interact with.

“Once you start seeking out illegal items to buy or interacting with people that are trying to sell you illegal items … or if you’re trying to access child exploitation or anything having to do with human trafficking or sex trafficking, that’s when it becomes illegal,” Bustillos said.

For the common internet user who may be curious about the dark web, caution is still highly advised. Even if the user stays clear of illegal content and activity, they are still vulnerable to other risks.

“If they don’t know what’s on there, they run the risk of downloading malware or viruses on their computer, and a lot of that can subject them to identity theft,” Bustillos said.

going to hell, people that lust after things are going to hell, all of us, that’s why the free gift of Jesus Christ, who died for all our sins, covers that.”

Pate said that the LGBTQ community should be respectful in the way that they react to the venue’s decisions. According to Rodriguez, opponents of Grace Gardens have threatened to destroy the property.

“Those who don’t agree with our views are constantly spewing words of hate towards us and even threatened our lives,” Rodriguez said.

Crista Mack, a digital media production student, said that Rodriguez refusing to host wedding services for queer couples is at her discretion if the law allows it.

“I come from a law enforcement background.

I was a special agent for 20 years, so the law is black and white to me,” Mack said. “Unfortunately, some of these legalities aren’t fair or morally and ethically sound. Most of these laws stem from a different time.”

Mack is currently working on a documentary about the struggles of the LGBTQ community with religion. She said that it will address their fears when it comes to going to church and God. In the recent 86th Texas legislative session, Sen. Charles Perry introduced Senate Bill 17, which is “expected to encourage and embolden licensed professionals to refuse to serve individuals due to religious objections to their identities, and to discourage licensing agencies from punishing those licensed professionals for such behavior,” according to Snopes, a fact-checking website.

The bill did not reach the governor’s desk and was left pending in committee.

It was absolutely not worth it in any way.”

50-year-old planetarium finds a new home

The El Paso Independent School District will relocate its Gene Roddenberry Planetarium, currently located at its Education Center on Boeing Drive, to Northeast El Paso’s Crosby Elementary School.

The forthcoming campus closing is set for August 2021 and EPISD intends to vacate the Education Center by 2020, with the revamped venue anticipating to open its doors by 2021.

“We had to relocate as we must vacate the city-owned building in which we currently are (housed). Crosby is a site that will be vacated after the construction of a consolidated school, so the space was available,” said Gustavo Reveles, Director of the El Paso Independent School District’s Community Engagement. “The location of Crosby also qualified the project for city of El Paso grant funding.”

The El Paso City Council approved more than $950,000 in Community Development Block Grant Funds and the EPISD Board of Trustees said it will provide an additional funding of more than $200,000.

“The relocation will help us upgrade our equipment and installation, which is decades

old. The new location also will give more space to the planetarium and allow for more activities,” Reveles said. “EPISD must relocate its central offices, so this move to the Crosby site al-

lows the district to continue space exploration education.”

Reveles explained that the planetarium has played an important role in El Paso’s education system for decades.

“Anyone who grew up and attended schools in El Paso has fond memories of attending the planetarium during a field trip,” Reveles said. “EPISD is proud to be a part of that experience and to provide this unique service, we hope to improve on that experience for our students at the Crosby site.”

“Most of El Paso didn’t know we had a planetarium. These are great educational programs for students to learn and be excited for space just as art museums are for artists, concerts for musicians, and sports games for athletes,” said UTEP junior Lorenzo Soliz.

The 50-year-old facility first opened its doors in 1969. The planetarium derives its name from Gene Roddenberry, El Paso native and creator of the cult-classic science fiction series “Star Trek.” Since then, thousands of El Pasoans and tourists alike have and will continue to visit the planetarium to marvel at the wonders of “space, the final frontier.”

UTEP student leads panel on masculinity, social constructs Alexia X. Nava Carmona The Prospector Hugo Hinojosa, a digital media production major at UTEP, will hold a student panel called “Masculinidad, derribando constructos sociales,” or “Masculinity, knocking down social constructs,” at noon Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the Blumberg Auditorium on UTEP library’s first floor.

Hinojosa, 20, started his project about the social constructs surrounding masculinity while taking a women’s studies class last semester. He chose masculinity as a topic for his final project of the class.

“It’s a topic that I don’t think is very talked about in the feminist movement and it was actually the first topic that appeared in the book, so I thought it was very interesting,” Hinojosa said. “I wanted to make an article, because (the professor) gave us the opportunity to do so and, since I am also a photographer, I wanted to take the pictures portraying masculinity (...) on the eyes of a feminist approach.”

Hinojosa did a photo gallery depicting men from the bordering cities of Ciudad Juárez,

Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. Since he couldn’t exhibit it for the class, he made an independent exhibition in Cd. Juárez and even showcased the photos in “The House 9: Revolt!” back in August.

“I really liked this project; I fell in love with it.

I think it’s my little baby,” Hinojosa said. “I have been a photographer for four years and this is the first (project) that I’m really proud of.”

Hinojosa then presented the idea to the director of UTEP’s Women and Gender Studies Department, Guillermina Gina Núñez-Mchiri, whom he met last semester.

“It really helps us reflect on the power of images, the power of art, the power of photography, to get us thinking, to get us into a conversation of the pressures that men face and how hard it is to be male when society expects (them) to be tough and rough and be the provider all the time,” Núñez-Mchiri said.

Hinojosa told Núñez-Mchiri about his project and she encouraged him to submit it to the board of the Hispanic Heritage Month event, Hinojosa said.

“I think the judges from the Hispanic Heritage Month said, ‘Yeah, you’re in, you can make

a panel, you will have two hours and you can do whatever you want,’” Hinojosa recalled.

Besides showing his art, the idea behind the panel is to open a conversation about masculinity and see other people’s experiences with that ideal, according to Hinojosa.

“Masculinity is something that has been present for my whole life. Since I was a little kid, I was always taught to act like a man and to be like a man; I have been told things like, ‘Don’t do this, because that’s for women,’ or ‘That’s feminine,’” Hinojosa said. “I want to send the message to an audience, not only show the pictures, but actually start a conversation and see what other people have to say about it. If there’s someone else wanting to share their experience or their point of view.”

“I think this panel is super important for ... not only men living in a Hispanic household, but to women as well because they just want to feel like there’s people who support them,” said Jacob Morales, a UTEP student majoring on kinesiology and a senator at large in the university’s Student Government Association.

UTEP’s student government in brief

The Prospector Appropriations, updates on special projects, two special election races, an issue with accountability and a trip to Bhutan were among the several things mentioned at UTEP’s Student Government Association (SGA) meeting Sept.

26.

The meeting began more than 30 minutes late, allegedly due to the tardiness of Senate Secretary Alexus Padron.

UTEP students proposed bills 26, 27 and 28 for SGA to provide them with funding to attend conferences. All three bills were unanimously approved and did not warrant any discussion. The amount of appropriations ranged from $250 to $400.

At general meetings, the SGA Senate almost routinely approves appropriations without any discussion because proposals by students go through a thorough vetting process.

“All of our bills go through a first and second reading. What happens is that our academic services coordinator receives the bill through email, and she walks them through the process to make sure they meet our criteria,” said Austin Stephens, SGA senate majority leader and appropriations chairman. “(The appropriations committee) is nine senators strong, so we do go over in depth with these individuals (about) the trips and why they are going.”

The SGA Senate also voted in prospective members into different positions.

Isaiah Iturralde, a freshman political science major, became a legislative assistant for Senatorat-Large Jordan Dominguez after a unanimous

vote. Deliberations by the SGA senate were not shown in the Facebook livestream, only displaying a screen reading, “Please Standby.”

Three students were unanimously appointed as election commissioners for SGA’s special elections for the positions of nursing collegiate senator and liberal arts collegiate senator, set to take place Oct. 9-10.

According to Stephens, current liberal arts collegiate senator, Adriana Chavez de la Rosa, will no longer be serving in her position because she is transitioning into her postgraduate studies and decided to move on. The nursing collegiate senator position has been vacant since the spring 2019 general SGA elections.

Stephens also mentioned that there are three candidates that have expressed interest in each position, totaling six candidates for SGA special election.

Senator-at-Large Juan Martinez detailed his special project to host a student-only town hall with Congresswoman Veronica Escobar on issues relating to education and the border at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 at the Geology Building room 310.

The SGA executive branch consisting of the president, vice president for external affairs and vice president for internal affairs all give weekly reports at general SGA meetings.

SGA President Jessica Martinez gave her report which consisted of reading aloud which senators belong to which university-wide standing committee.

Martinez also alleged that SGA representatives in the past have not been representing students’ interest by attending committee meetings that discuss ongoing operations.

“Please keep in mind that this year is going to be completely different than from what happened last year,” Martinez said. “If you do not attend the first meeting, or you’re not being responsive, you guys will be removed from that committee and I will appoint someone else. This is because there has been an issue with having student representatives in those committees, where students have not shown up or not been responsive.”

Stephens said that he could not comment on the accountability of past administrations, but that UTEP’s dean of students shared with the current administration the concept of shared governance.

“A big part of that is making sure that we keep students within these committees as well.

It includes faculty senate committees and a multitude of department wide committees too,” Stephens said.

SGA advisor Catie McCorry-Andalis, associate vice president for student engagement and dean of students, also gives a weekly report as advisor at general SGA meetings.

McCorry-Andalis said that the numbers of student attendance at football games has increased and that students are underutilizing the Miner Gold Card due to a lack of awareness. She also said that there has been an increased demand for tailgates.

“I, however, will be out-of-pocket, literally out of the country, starting the ninth of October and I’ll be back in the country on the twentieth,” McCorry-Andalis said. “When you find out where I’m gonna go, you know I’ll have to Google the time to recover. I am traveling to Bhutan for a week with Dr. Natalicio. It’s exciting that I’m going back. It is a very hard trip to make.”

The nature of McCorry-Andalis’ trip to Bhutan with UTEP President Emerita Diana Natalico was not explained in depth at the meeting but Stephens explained that UTEP has close ties with the country of Bhutan and that there is a large population of Bhutanese students at the university. He was not exactly aware of the nature of McCorry-Andalis’ trip, but he assumes that it is for official purposes.

Considered one of the tightest campus safety measures in the nation by the Dallas Observer, SB 212, penalizes university employees with misdemeanor criminal offenses if they do not report Title IX violations to their respective coordinator or deputy coordinators. The bill went into effect about a month ago.

In the 86th Texas legislative session, Sen. Joan Huffman filed SB 212 “relating to a reporting requirement for certain incidents of sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, or stalking at certain public and private institutions of higher education; creating a criminal offense; authorizing administrative penalties,” according to the bill’s official caption text.

Toward the end of session, Gov. Greg Abbott signed Huffman’s bill into law June 14, effective Sept. 1.

UTEP’s Title IX coordinator is Sandy Vasquez, associate vice president for human resources, along with UTEP administrators Catie McCorry-Andalis, Beatriz Tapia, and Charlie Gibbens as deputy coordinators. “(College employees) are required to report those offenses. If someone doesn’t, and it has to be in the scope of their work, then they will be terminated,” McCorry-Andalis said. “At the same time, they could potentially face a class A or class B misdemeanor from police action towards them.”

Stephanie Marquez, 21-year-old UTEP student, said that it is common for victims of sexual assault to open up about their experience with a professor and is usually their way of reporting it.

“They may not have the guts to report it to the police because it’s hard, so if they tell a professor that they trust, then that may mean they want the police to know about it, too,” Marquez said.

According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), schools grossly underreport sexual harassment and assault with 89 percent of college campuses reporting zero incidents of rape in 2016 nationwide. AAUW analyzed data reported under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) of 1990.

The Clery Act requires institutions of higher education to monitor, track and report data on criminal incidents on-campus to the U.S. Department of Education. Clery Act reports should also be publicly available online.

UTEP released its Annual Security and Fire Safety Report Oct. 1 detailing crime on campus, complying with the Clery Act.

Since 2016, there have been 12 rape cases, five cases of fondling, two cases of statutory rape, three cases of domestic violence, 16 cases of dating violence and 40 cases of stalking at UTEP. The university has a student enrollment of more than 25,000 students.

“I am very pleased that, as an institution, we have a low rate of incidents that fall under sexual harassment and sexual misconduct compared to other data that is reported by colleges and universities,” McCorry-Andalis said. “But still, one is too many.”

Natalia Lafourcade stuns fans, praises environmental activism of ‘La Greta’ Bryan Mena

Fans of ‘The Office’ rejoice at trivia bar crawl Alejandra Molina

The Prospector Natalia Lafourcade, critically acclaimed Mexican pop rock singer, astounded an audience with fiery performances and ardent implorations for environmental justice Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Plaza Theatre in downtown El Paso.

The appearance was part of Lafourcade’s 2019 tour across the United States, which she officially kicked off July 14 in Saratoga, California.

“Cobrará vida en 17 lugares distintos donde compartiremos mi repertorio musical y temas de compositores a quienes he rendido homenaje en este tiempo,” Lafourcade said in an Instagram post announcing the tour. (“It will come to life in 17 different places where we will share my musical repertoire and tributes to composers that I have paid homage to.”)

The concert opened with the “son jarocho” folk tunes of her song “Mi Tierra Veracruzana,” where Lafourcade appeared before a roaring audience.

Her next two songs were “Soledad y el Mar” and “Qué He Sacado Con Quererte,” all three songs part of her Latin Grammy award-winning seventh studio album “Musas: Un Homenaje al Folclore Latinoamericano en Manos de Los Macorinos, Vol 1.”

“She is very powerful for the single woman, especially the woman who has had her heart broken. She empowers women to not give up on love,” said Soraya Holguin, who attended the concert, “I really enjoy her music, her talent is just amazing. She was in New York just recently, about a few weeks ago, and she has an amazing following of Latinas.”

Holguin, the finance director for a local car dealer, said she has been following Lafourcade for the past seven years and that her favorite song is “Hasta La Raíz.”

Throughout the night, the Mexican icon of folk rock performed several songs from her entire discography, including a semi-acapella version of “Amor, Amor de Mis Amores” that she intimately sang with the audience.

Midway through Lafourcade’s performance, her backup band ceased to play while the spotlight fixed solely on her as she bestowed upon the crowd her deepest thoughts on current events around the world.

The crowd clapped in the middle of her speech affirming her call to action for environmental justice.

Lafourcade praised the environmental activism of the Swedish 16-year-old, Greta Thunberg, to whom she referred to as “La Greta.”

“A todos los que están detrás de La Greta, al movimiento estudiantil, al movimiento ‘FridaysForFuture,’ benditos son esos niños, benditas esas generaciones jóvenes,” Lafourcade said, “Como adultos apoyemóslos. Apoyemos esa generación joven y vamos para delante como humanidad con amor. Esto es un derecho de nacimiento.” (“To everyone behind Greta, the student movement, the FridaysForFuture movement, bless those kids, bless this young generation,” Lafourcade said, “As adults, we must support them. We must support that young generation and let’s move forward as one human race with love. This is our birth right.”)

Lafourcade ended her show by graciously thanking every member of her backup band by name.

The singer has six more stops in Texas before she concludes her U.S. tour.

“We Love Pub Crawls” hosted a trivia bar crawl themed after “The Office,” a popular comedy series, Saturday, Oct. 5, that started at Hope and Anchor and ended at King’s X with an awards ceremony for the winners.

The event was for people more than 21 years old and admission cost $22.99 per person, which included a T-shirt. It was a chance for die-hard fans of “The Office” to enjoy an event made just for them. Some participants even cosplayed their favorite characters of the series.

Attendees included a married couple dressed as Dwight and Angela, to someone dressed as pumpkin head Dwight from episode five of season nine. Most of the contestants were wearing “The Office” shirts, and others were dressed in typical office attire.

Every participant received a shirt with the words “Dunder Mifflin,” which is the fictional company the characters work for, plus a lanyard with a QR code for the crawl guide.

The trivia game consisted of 75 questions total divided into three segments of 25 questions each. The questions were difficult, including small details only true fans of the show could ever know.

OFFICE from page 7 “The Office” is an American sitcom, adapted from the British series of the same name, that depicts the everyday lives of employees at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. The series ran for nine successful seasons on NBC for eight years.

It premiered in 2005 and formally ended in 2013. The show was nominated for a total of 42 Emmy awards and was bolstered to even more success when it debuted on Netflix, according to The Washington Post.

The first stop was at the bar Hope And Anchor, where participants enjoyed “The Office” themed alcoholic drinks. One of the most popular drinks among the crowd was “The Dundie,” a mix of vodka, gin and elderflower lemonade; and another was the “Jim and Pam,” made of Jim Beam bourbon whiskey and peach and pomegranate flavoring.

The second stop was Valentine’s Kitchen and Bar, where participants had the chance to savor food specials such as “Man Meat,” a plate of tamarind baby back ribs and other alcoholic drink mixes.

Scenic’s Bar and Grill was the next stop of the crawl which also offered a variety of drink and food specials. The most notable drinks were the “Anger Management: AMF,” a mix of

vodka, rum, tequila, gin, Blue Curacao liqueur, and soda; the “Boom, ROASTED!” a jalapeño margarita; and the “Beet Cleanse,” a mixture of house wines.

The bar also offered “Stanley’s Weak Heart” which were jalapeño shrimp poppers, “Funeral for a Bird” a meal of chicken wings and fries, and “Threat Level: Mushroom” a dish of fried mushrooms with ranch.

The fourth stop was The Hoppy Monk which offered “The Michael Scarn,” a beer and shot combination with tequila and whiskey as the two options.

The last stop was King X’s, which hosted a retro themed party to celebrate the end of the event. The event organizers gave awards to the winners from the trivia and costume contest.

Each winner got a “Dundie Award,” and the first place on the trivia got to win a stapler inside of a Jell-O, which is a reference to one of Jim’s infamous pranks on the show.

“It was our first time playing and we had a blast,” participant Olivia Esera said. “One of my favorite moments is when Kevin comes in and drops his chili; also when Jim comes in dressed like Dwight and he goes like ‘identity theft is not a joke, Jim!’ and also when Angela throws the cat up in the ceiling and then it falls down.”

‘Joker’ is a sobering journey of mental illness Jaqueline Martinez The Prospector Warner Brothers introduced a darker universe and a bone-chilling new “Clown Prince of Crime” with the release of “Joker.”

The film broke box office records in its opening weekend, making it Warner Bros’ biggest hit this year, as well as one of the most notorious R-rated films for an opening weekend, making a whopping $234 million worldwide.

The motion picture film featured “Walk the Line” actor, Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a clown-for-hire by day who tries to function normally under a regular dose of pills, while he cares for his sick mother.

In the movie, Fleck suffers from a neurological condition that causes him to burst out in painful and uncontrollable laughter during the worst possible times. Fleck aspires to be a standup comedian someday, so he keeps track of his jokes in a notebook, where he also scribbles pornography.

Phoenix’s awestriking performance joins the league of Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamil, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto, who each brought their own facade and approach to the Batman nemesis. In Phoenix’s depiction, the Joker wears a peculiarly different mask: the mask of humanity.

It is a disturbing portrayal of a normal human being who has suffered mental trauma and initially tries to simply be “good” to get through the day in the treacherous city of Gotham.

The film does not follow any comic storyline since the Joker character has different origin stories, but it is not completely disconnected from the comics.

Although Batman is not an essential character in the new film, Bruce Wayne was cast as the young son of Thomas Wayne, billionaire and mayoral candidate of Gotham City.

Fleck feels abandoned by society and this catalyzes his transition into the infamous archnemesis of Batman, the antihero symbol for the downtrodden.

Viewers of the unsettling movie have urged cinemas to ban the film, claiming that it glamorizes gun crime and mental health issues, according to Daily Mail.

Warner Bros defended the film by stating, “Make no mistake: Neither the fictional character Joker, nor the film, is an endorsement of real-world violence of any kind.”

Phoenix and the director of the film, Todd Phillips, also defended the film, trusting that audiences know the difference between right and wrong.

“I really liked it, especially how they incorporated parts of previous versions of the Joker; Heath Ledger’s anarchy and face-painting; Mark Hamils’ quick wit and funny remarks; Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger with having kind of a mafia behind them,” said Rene Ochoa, a UTEP senior studying electrical engineering who saw the screening at the Alamo Drafthouse. “Another thing they incorporated well was the Killing Joke by Alan Moore, where they mention that you can have one bad day and fall down this rabbit hole and become a ‘bad’ person.”

“What Joaquin Phoe nix did amazingly was portray that he was a mental patient, that he had problems but was trying to get help. Then it all starts spiraling down for him and he tried to find sources of happiness within his mind but at the end of the day he couldn’t find it, until he saw an outlet in which he became this symbol of anarchy,” Ochoa said. “He held on to it because that was what he wanted, to be appreciated some way and it’s what a lot of people are looking for.”

UTSA Roadrunners run over UTEP Miners Football struggles in homecoming game versus rushing attack

Isaiah Ramirez The Prospector A late game surge by the UTEP football team was not enough to pull off a win against the University of Texas at San Antonio falling to the Roadrunners 26-16 on homecoming at the Sun Bowl. UTSA displayed an exceptional running game with the Roadrunners rushing for 320 yards as a team, while the Miners could only muster 99 yards on the ground. Those 99 yards on the ground are the second lowest by the Miners as a team this season.

Coming into this matchup both UTEP and UTSA had identical records at 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

UTEP started off slow in their homecoming matchup against UTSA with the Miners scoring just three points by halftime.

“I felt the slow start to this game kind of knocked our wind out of our sails for the football game,” UTEP Head Coach Dana Dimel said.

UTEP senior quarterback Kai Locksley would have his first start of the season for the Miners and would finish the game with 41 passing yards on 2-of-8 passing.

The offense would struggle in the first half for the Miners with 28 passing yards and 62 rushing yards with six first downs.

The Miners initial touchdown with 1:26 left in third quarter was Treyvon Hughes scoring on an eight-yard rushing touchdown.

UTSA scored 16 second half points and would take a 26-10 lead with 4:02 remaining in the fourth quarter.

UTEP tried to convert some sort of hope in walking out the Sun Bowl with a victory with a two-yard touchdown reception by sophomore wide receiver Tre 'Shon Wolf, thrown by Senior quarterback Brandon Jones. The Miners failed on the two-point conversion with wide receiver Walter Dawn Jr., unable to get one foot down in the end zone for his reception.

Wolf finished the game with 91 receiving yards and one touchdown on nine receptions.

“I’ve had the same mentality going into this game which is come out and be the best I can and just be a dog out there and make plays happen,” Wolf said.

UTSA rushed for 123 yards with freshman running back Sincere McCormick leading the

way with 63 yards on 12 carries in the first half.

McCormick would set the single game rushing record for yards in a game finishing the matchup with 189 yards and one touchdown. McCormick averaged 8.6 yards per carry against the Miners.

The Roadrunners had a formidable one-two punch in the run game with McCormick and sophomore quarterback Lowell Narcisse rushing for 115 yards, a rushing touchdown and averaged 6.1 yards per carry.

The 320 yards allowed on the ground is the most allowed by the Miners this season.

One bright spot in the Miners defense against the Roadrunners was redshirt senior Adrian Hynson, who stepped into the starting role subbing for redshirt sophomore Justin Prince who is out for an extended period with a leg injury. Hynson would have 10 total tackles for the evening tying a team high, but the playmaker showed his identity as a team player moving forward.

“After this game we have to go into practice and learn where we messed up and come prepared and get better and pick each other up,” Hynson said.

Jones would enter the game at quarterback for the Miners at the 3:59 mark in third quarter and would finish the game with 140 passing yards on 14-of-22 passing and one touchdown.

Third down conversions were not the strong suit of the Miners against UTSA with the Miners going 2-of-12 on third downs. Coming into this matchup UTEP was just 14-of-51 on third down conversions.

“We have to getter better on first and second downs and eliminate third and long situations,” Dimel said.

The Miners have now won just two games in the last three seasons with a cumulative record of 2-29.

“We need to have effort without mistakes and defend the run better and be able to execute better moving forward,” Dimel said.

Miners play charity game vs Tech Isaiah Ramirez The Prospector The UTEP men’s basketball team will hit the court this weekend as it takes on the 2019 national championship runner-up Texas Tech for an exhibition game. The proceeds from the matchup with the Red Raiders will be donated to the GECU foundation in support of the victims of the Aug. 3 mass shooting in El Paso.

Expectations are high for this Miner squad which includes a number of exceptionally skilled players. Notable returners from last season's campaign include sophomore guards Jordan Lathon and Nigel Hawkins along with sophmore forwards Kaosi Ezeagu and Efe Odige.

Three of the top four scorers on last year’s team return for the Miners, all scoring in double figures for the season. Odige was the team leader in rebounds and le,d Conference USA in rebounding average with 10.1 per game.

The Miners also have several highly touted Division I transfers. Redshirt sophomore forward Tydus Verhoeven and redshirt junior Bryson Williams are two versatile big men that bring multiple qualities to the UTEP frontcourt.

Redshirt sophomore guard Souley Boum and sophomore guard Kaden Archie are two guards that can contribute both scoring and passing abilities to the Miner backcourt. The mixture of solid returnees and several high caliber transfers

only add fuel to this team’s arsenal of explosive talent.

Awaiting the Miners at the Don Haskins Center in this matchup will be a Texas Tech team that was narrowly defeated by the University of Virgina 85-77 in last season's National Championship game. The Red Raiders beat UTEP 86-61 last season in an exhibition, while going 31-7 on the season.TexasTech lost arguably their best player Jarrett Culver to the NBA draft but still have junior guard Davide Moretti who was a big part of the Red Raiders team last season.

Moretti averaged 11.5 points per game and 2.4 assists per game and was named an All-Big 12 third team selection last season.

The Red Raiders have a talented bunch of transfers this upcoming season as well in sophomore forward Joel Ntambwe and senior guard Chris Clarke. Both Clarke and Ntambwe previously played at Division I programs.

"We're excited about our guys, their work ethic and what they're doing to prepare,” UTEP Head Coach Rodney Terry said .

UTEP’s matchup versus Texas Tech takes place at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Don Haskins Center. Tickets for the exhibition game are $10 with general admission which is first come first serve seating. This game is not part of the 2019-2020 season ticket.

Cheruiyot wins his second race Miners spiked by Roadrunners Three runners in top three at invitational Michael Cuviello The Prospector Miner freshman Titus Cheruiyot won the second time this year in three meets by coming in first at the Joe Piane Invitational Friday Oct. 4 at South Bend, Indiana. Finishing with a time of 24:13.01, Cheruiyot won by just over a second over his nearest competitor and three seconds ahead of teammate sophomore Rodgers Korir who finished third overall. Unfortunately for the team competition the next best Miner finished 61st.

Both Cheruiyot and Korir have finished top three in every meet this season. Cheruiyot has with two wins and a third-place finish to his credit while Korir has a first, second and third place finish. UTEP’s top runners are showing they can compete with any teams in the country but does not have the uppper tier depth yet to beat the best teams outside of conference.

The UTEP men’s team finished ninth overall in the competition which included 25 colleges from across the country. The men’s competition

was won by Utah Valley with an average time of 24.42 per runner and 86 total points. Utah Valley had four runners in the top 11 which broke the tie with Miami of Ohio to determine the meet winner.

On the women’s side Miners’ senior Winnie Koech finished second, six seconds behind the winner. Koech has finished first and second in her two races this season, winning her last race at the Lori Fitzgerald in El Paso.

The Miners had three overall top seven finishers with senior Linda Cheruiyot finishing sixth (17:18) and junior Carolyne Chepkosgei finishing seventh overall (17:20).

The women’s team finished ninth overall with Cal State Fullerton winning the women’s overall team title with an average time of 17:40.

"I am very proud of both UTEP cross-country men and women team's efforts today as they competed among 25 teams in the 2019 edition of Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational," UTEP Head Coach Paul Ereng said.

UTEP cross-country will next compete in the NCAA pre-nationals Oct. 19 in Terre Haute, Indiana.

UTEP Vollyball loses 4th straight match

Michael Cuviello The Prospector The banged-up Miners (7-9, 0-3) put on an inspired performance against the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) (10-7, 3-1) Roadrunners Sunday losing in four sets (25-20, 19-25, 23-25, 24-26). This was the Miners’ 14th consecutive loss to the Roadrunners as they have not beaten UTSA since 2010.

While the result was the same as the past Sunday losing in four sets, the Miners were much more competitive as they lost two of their sets by just two points. to the Roadruners. The previous matchup had the Miners losing three straight sets by eight points or more after winning the first set in San Antonio.

The Miners were without promising freshmen Irbe Lazda and Alianza Darley who have been standouts for the team this season and are potential members of the Conference USA allfreshman team. Both these players have been frequent starters and appeared in most of the games played this season. Lazda ranks fourth

on the team in service aces with 15 and Darly is fifth on the team in kills with 80.

“We are beat up for sure but that’s why you have a big roster. The players on the floor have to execute for us,” Coach Ben Waller said.

Darley had the misfortune of injuring her ankle in pre match warmups, joining Lazda on the bench who has been out for the past six games with a broken foot. Senior Brianna Arellano was recovering from a groin injury which hampered her play quite a bit in this match.

The opening set was all UTEP as the Miners never trailed in the game winning 25-20.

The second set was a complete reversal with UTSA dominating from early in the set and once they took the lead at 4-3 the Roadrunners never looked back with a 25-19 victory.

Opening the third set the Roadrunners were still dominating like the previous set, starting off with a 6-1 lead but the Miners fought back and tied it at 18. Later in the set the Miners and

UTEP, now faced with being down by a set were in a must-win situation in the fourth game.

Twice in the final set the Miners took the lead by three points, the last being at 15-12. The teams went back and forth for the second half of the set with the Miners finding themselves at game point up 24-23, but two consecutive attack errors by junior Cheyenne Jones sealed the fate for UTEP falling 26-24 in the last set losing the final three points.

“We didn’t execute at the end and they did,” Waller said. “That’s the difference between a win and a loss at this level against a good team.”

Waller felt that having played against two of the top teams in Conference USA showed that they were capable of competing well with the rest of the conference and that the team is gaining confidence as well as trust in the staff.

The UTEP leader for kills was junior Anamarija Mikovic with 11 with senior Serena Patterson second with 10. Alex Torres led the team in digs with 14 and Patterson had 12 to notch a double-double for the match. Junior Mallory Yost led the team in blocks with five with Jones having four.

For the Roadrunners, Hanna Lopez paced them with 13 kills along with four digs and Kara Teal was a force defensively as she had eight blocks against the Miners.

UTSA has constantly been an elite team since they entered Conference USA with a 71-17 record and hold a 14-1 series advantage over the Miners since 2010 when UTEP upset them games to two.

Ben Waller is in his first year as UTEP’s head coach, after being an assistant at I-10 Rival New Mexico St. since 2013.

“I feel confident that we are going to give ourselves a chance to be in the mix for the conference tournament,” Waller said.

The Miners played in front of an estimated 1,100 UTEP fans against UTSA, which was the largest crowd at Memorial Gym since 1,543 showed up Sept.11, 2011 versus Southern Methodist. The crowd was noticably enthused with the Miner’s effort as they cheered on the home team.

“I’m really excited about the people in this stands that were starting to get behind us, “Waller said it was an exciting atmosphere here.”

Recycle oil, antifreeze, and other vehicle fluids, or dispose of them properly to prevent the pollution of stormwater, groundwater and the Rio Grande.
