eaches came to Central Texas, like so many other delicious things, with the first German settlers in the mid-1800s. The local soil, temperature variations, and altitude combine to form an almost perfect peach-grow ing climate (if untimely freezes and other inclement weather don’t come around). The average peach tree produces three to four bushels (150 to 200 pounds) of peaches each year. Folks come from far and near to buy peaches each summer. Many of the orchards date back to the early 1900s and have been passed down through generations. The first Vogel peaches were planted by Armand Vogel, who sold them under a shade tree on the road between Stonewall and Fredericksburg. In 1972, the Vogels built a permanent roadside market near the spot where Armand used to sell his peaches.
Armand’s son, George, and his wife, Nelda, planted 200 more trees in 1953. The orchard now has more than 2,800 trees and is run by George and Nelda’s son, Jamey, his wife, Terri, and their family. They grow some 17 varieties, which begin to ripen around the middle of May. The first peaches of the season are the clingstone variety Starlite White. The first freestones at Vogel Orchard are the Tex Royal, generally available around the end of May. The various varieties continue through the summer until early August. In addition to peaches, the market sells Methley plums from the family orchard, blackberrie s, cantaloupes, and other seasonal produce. They also offer a variety of peach-based goodies made by the family—peach ice cream, peach cobbler, Nelda’s peach preserves, and peach butter, plum jelly, and fig, blackberry, and pear preserves.
Stonewall Peach Crisp
Although I enjoy fresh peaches all summer, I also stock up our freezer around the end of July when the crop begins to dwindle. Then I can add a peach cobbler or crisp to my holiday menus using my stash of fresh frozen peaches. It adds a welcome taste of summer sun to the holiday table. ServeS 6. PEACHES:
5 cups fresh peaches, peeled, pitted, and sliced ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 3 tablespoons turbinado (raw) sugar 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

TOPPING:
2 cups mini shredded wheat cereal 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar ⅓ cup chopped pecans 1½ sticks well-chilled unsalted butter, cut into ½-inch cubes 1 tablespoon vanilla

“Hard Scrabble is hard pastoral of the kind we have learned to recognize in Wordsworth, Frost, Hemingway, and Faulkner. It celebrates life in accommodation with a piece of the ‘given’ creation, a recalcitrant four hundred or so acres of Texas cedar brake, old field, and creek bottom, which will require of any genuine resident all the character he can muster.” —SOUTHWEST REVIEW

promises to be the essential history of Texas for a new generation of readers. Fifteen additional titles will follow, released over a five-year period. Drawing on the state’s brightest writers, scholars, and intellectuals—all distinguished faculty members at the University of Texas at Austin—the engagingly written narratives of the Texas Bookshelf will reveal the many fascinating stories that have played out in Texas from pre-Columbian times to the twenty-first century. The Bookshelf will also be support-
ed by an interactive website that will facilitate an extended online community. Visitors to the site can access related supplemental content including audio, video, photography, and downloadable readers guides, as well as links to rich primary source materials located in the magnificent research archives and special collections on the UT Austin campus. Additionally, a schedule of special programs and public events for the university community and general public will be developed in conjunction with the publication of each book.
