INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT ANNUAL REPORT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2019
A Message from Marilyn Abegg-Glass Consulting Vice President of Institutional Advancement Every morning, I wake up motivated thinking about our potential at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. In keeping with our values of providing excellent patient care, community health, comprehensive medical education and innovative research, we have the potential to impact hundreds of thousands of families across East Texas. It is invigorating to be part of an organization that is meeting the critical needs of people in our community and shaping the future of East Texas. UT Health Science Center at Tyler has a long history of innovation and progress. Our accomplishments have uniquely positioned us to build upon our region’s legacy of exceptional healthcare, medical education and innovative research. These accomplishments have ultimately positioned us to go to the next level of excellence. Our vision is to be a great institution unified in common purpose to benefit human health and to improve the quality of life across the population of Northeast Texas. Over the past year, we have made great strides in immediate philanthropic support while also developing long-range strategies that will have a generational impact. Our team has done a phenomenal job, and we hope you take a moment to review our exceptional team members in this report. The Institutional Advancement Department also completed an internal strategic plan this past year, which highlights our opportunities and priorities for moving forward. For example, we anticipate growing our efforts with grateful patients from across the U.S. who come to us suffering from severe health issues and in need of innovative healthcare solutions. We also are expanding our efforts to strategically engage planned-giving donors who realize the importance of our long-range plans for comprehensive research and healthcare delivery. With our recent acquisition of a local, established health system, our expanded regional outreach to communities across Northeast Texas has grown considerably. With a well-designed regional outreach strategy, we anticipate increased philanthropic support across the region. This will have a significant impact on our ability to more effectively meet the medical needs of our East Texas citizens, as well as impact our educational and research projects dedicated to the ultimate good health of the broader East Texas community. My hope, as you read this report, is to share our vision and become a part of what is on the horizon for healthcare across East Texas. As indicated by a recent statewide health statistics report, East Texas is in dire need of an immediate health intervention in the way we promote health education and deliver healthcare. As the only university medical center in the region, we have the experience, the vision and the leadership to transform the health of East Texas. Your support will provide the fuel to get us there. In addition to the life-saving opportunities for citizens across our region as they experience the opportunities of good health and life-changing habits, we will benefit from a significant economic impact that will be a driving force for this region for generations to come. Healthy communities thrive. Unhealthy communities die.

Herd Family Improves Level 1 Trauma Center
The Herd family has a long history of supporting trauma services in East Texas. In December 2018, the Herd family blazed a new trail by giving the first major gift to UT Health Science Center at Tyler for one of our new hospitals. The Herd family overhauled the critical public announcement system in the UT Health Tyler trauma center. The new, expanded system will improve the work of all trauma professionals and will serve families through the daily devotional. Thank you to the Herd family for continuing to improve trauma care in East Texas and for their support of the UT Health East Texas health system.

Planning Makes a Difference
In 2016, UT Health Science Center at Tyler announced planning to build the first free-standing academic building on campus for the School of Community and Rural Health. At the same time, planning began to launch the capital campaign. Thanks to our very generous donors, more than $2 million were donated for this milestone project. The building was recently celebrated with a ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration. While the building is complete, we recognize that East Texas still faces tremendous health challenges, especially in rural areas. Please reach out to a member of the advancement staff if you would like to take a tour of our new building and learn how the School of Community and Rural Health is improving the health of all East Texans.
We are grateful to our donors who carefully plan their philanthropy and impact. Recently, two planned gifts were realized and are making a difference in cancer research, trauma research and care and permanent research funding. D.J. and Jack Harris wanted to make a significant difference at UT Health Science Center at Tyler. Working with their financial adviser and our advancement staff, they set up a charitable gift annuity (CGA). This annuity allowed them to receive a steady stream of income and make a great impact at the health science center. In April 2019, their gift was realized, and $400,000 came to UT Health Science Center for cancer and trauma research conducted here in East Texas. Alice and Hal Juengling had a similar feeling in wanting to make a lasting impact at UT Health Science Center at Tyler. The Juenglings wanted to provide substantial, permanent medical research funding. They chose to give a percentage of their estate in their will to UT Health Science Center for the creation of a new medical research endowment.

How Annual Funds Make an Impact
Partnering with President Kirk A. Calhoun, collective donations from members of the President’s Council provide support for unfunded care to patients with special needs, scholarship assistance for our students, funding for unique research initiatives and recruitment funding for accomplished clinical, research and academic faculty. Research Council donations invest in the work conducted in our 150,000-square-foot research center located at UT Health Science Center at Tyler. This is home to many of the top researchers in the world who conduct transforming and groundbreaking discoveries. Assisted by Research Council support, our investigators are continually discovering new drugs and cures that impact East Texas and the global community, taking research from the bench to the patient’s bedside.
