Our Care for Seniors is Unique We know that the needs of older adults are often very different from those of a younger population. We have designed our seniorspecific inpatient unit and our outpatient counseling center around the unique physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges of the older adult patient. We provide 24-hour intensive treatment in a safe, structured, and supportive environment. In addition to behavioral health services, our patients have access to services at UT Health Northeast, including physical and occupational therapy and laboratory, dietary, and emergency services.

Intensive Outpatient Program for Older Adults

Our Outpatient Counseling Center, also on the campus of UT Health Northeast, provides treatment that enables senior adults to address their illness while remaining independent in their homes or long-term care settings. This level of care may prevent the need for hospitalization, shorten a hospital stay, or serve as a “step down” from inpatient care. Our outpatient program is designed for older adults who have symptoms that interfere with quality of life such as withdrawal, isolation, grief, depression, and loneliness. Treatment includes therapy groups that focus on such issues as cognitive training, coping with physical illness, anger management, problem solving, coping skills, relapse prevention, and late-in-life transitions (for example, retirement, relocation, loss of spouse). Seniors referred to the program receive a psychiatric evaluation and psychosocial assessment to ensure that the program addresses the patient’s specific needs with a personalized treatment plan and schedule. Lunch is provided daily to participants and transportation is available.

New Senior Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit To better address our patients’ needs and optimize treatment outcomes, the Senior Behavioral Health inpatient unit on the campus of UT Health Northeast is divided into two specific areas:

Area 1 contains 16 beds designed for seniors with general psychiatric issues.

Area 2 contains 14 beds and is designed to evaluate and treat

seniors who experience memory and/or behavioral problems related to dementia or other cognitive impairments.
