EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: CARL ROBERTS Congratulations to Carl Roberts on being selected as Facilities Employee of the Month, July 2017 (pictured with Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Kennard Brown, center, Emile J. David, associate vice chancellor, far left and Kenneth Bradshaw, director of facilities, right). Carl’s nomination specifically outlined how he went above and beyond recently with outstanding efforts during a steam shut down over the July 4th weekend. While securing the boilers is a job within itself, bringing them back online takes skill! Carl is to be commended for hanging in and working 15 (fifteen) straight hours with the boilers and bringing the system online manually so the campus could have steam supply to 13 buildings. Not only did he go well above and beyond, but made sure the job was completed on time. Carl was dedicated to ensuring everything was back up and running as promised on Wednesday when everyone was due to return to work after the July 4th holiday. This type of effort from our employees is very much appreciated and we appreciate Carl giving his best every day in such an important role here on campus. and for his excellent service to our customers each and every day.
A huge thank you to Dr. Kennard Brown for his support of the Facilities Employee of the Month program!

SAFETY OFFICE TIPS - HOUSEKEEPING
Scott Campbell - Office of Safety, Facilities Administration Housekeeping is a regulation that is contained under 29 CFR 1922, Walking-Working Surfaces. Under this regulation, all places of employment, passageways, storerooms, service rooms, and walking-working surfaces are kept in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition. The floor of each workroom is maintained in a clean and, to the extent feasible, in a dry condition. When wet processes are used, drainage must be maintained and, to the extent feasible, dry standing places, such as false floors, platforms, and mats must be provided. Walking-working surfaces are maintained free of hazards such as sharp or protruding objects, loose boards, corrosion, leaks, spills, snow, and ice. Clutter blocking fire exits, aisles and emergency exits is a housekeeping problem that is seen often. Clutter, leaks or standing water also can contribute to slips, trips and falls. Workers shouldn’t wait for housekeeping or logistics crews to take care of these issues, without notifying someone. These issues should be addressed immediately by contacting the appropriate Facilities Staff, or Campus Safety for resolution. When it comes to storage, employers need to make sure appropriate areas are made available. Electrical rooms used inappropriately for storage, with supplies blocking electrical installations can cause a hazard. Even if clearance between the stored supplies and the circuit breakers is appropriate, departments need to consider situations that could arise in which someone would need easy access to that room, such as a first responder in an emergency. For information on reporting Hazards, see https://www.uthsc.edu/campus-safety/occupational-safety.php
