DEPARTMENT NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Welcome to the Winter 2024 edition of UT Health Science Center Surgery News.
We had a very busy quarter with respect to our visiting lecture series and the Department was delighted to host a slate of outstanding speakers including Dr. John Stewart, Chair of the Department of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine, who served as our annual Access and Engagement Visiting Professor.
A very special recognition goes out to Dr. Tim Jancelewicz, Professor and Interim Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery, who is a Principal Investigator on a newly funded $11.4 million grant that supports a multi-institutional clinical trial that critically examines the use of nitric oxide in newborns with congenital diaphragmatic hernia. This is truly an extraordinary achievement and has the potential to yield practice changing findings.
Notably, the Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care had a very busy recruitment quarter and are proud to announce three new faculty members. Please meet them herein. Congratulations to Dr. Andrew Kerwin, Professor and Division Chief on this success.
In this edition’s Faculty Spotlight, we are pleased to provide a great “two for one” special and introduce you to the superb husband-wife surgical team of Dr. Richard Johnson and Dr. Jane Zhao. We are incredibly pleased that they have joined our Department.
As is per custom, our annual Holiday Party was held at the University Club of Memphis on Saturday, December 7th. It is always a pleasure seeing members of the Department with family and friends celebrating the season together. Thank you to Dr. Martin Fleming and Ms. Brandi Lewis for their assistance in organizing this event.
As another calendar year comes to an end, I am as usual, extremely grateful to our staff, residents, fellows, and faculty for their continued contributions to the Department. We are looking forward to another successful and impactful year. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and very happy holiday season!

UT HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER’S DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
BRINGING THEIR SKILLS AND TALENT TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF SURGEONS
Richard Johnson, DO and Jane Zhao, MD, MS were recruited as a couple to the Department of Surgery
Brenda Young, Marketing and Communications Associate
Thoracic surgeon Jane Zhao, MD, MS, Assistant Professor, Division of Thoracic Surgery, is excited about being in Memphis and serving as a physician in this region. She and her husband, Richard Johnson, DO, a general and minimally invasive surgeon, Assistant Professor, Division of General Surgery, are two of the newest members of the Department of Surgery. Together, they have brought their respective areas of expertise to the department. In addition to providing innovative medical procedures to their patients, they serve as important educators for our surgical residents.
“It’s very exciting to experience the blend between academic and community practice,” Zhao said. “The teaching side of academics goes beyond educating students and surgical residents. When we interact with patients and take care of them, a lot of our responsibility as their doctor is to educate them also.”
Dr. Zhao is originally from Sugar Land, TX and graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. She then completed both a general surgery residency and a clinical informatics fellowship at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. Before coming to UT Health Science Center, she received cardiothoracic surgery fellowship training at The Ohio State University. Dr. Zhao is pleased to work alongside Dr. Thomas Ng, Professor and Chief, Division of Thoracic Surgery.
“I feel so fortunate having Dr. Ng as my senior partner. He pushes boundaries when it comes to robotic lung resections. He is very technically savvy.”
Dr. Johnson is from Racine, Wisconsin. Following medical school at Des Moines University, he completed his general surgery training at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. He underwent additional fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery and advanced endoscopy at The Ohio State University. Before arriving at UT Health Science Center, he was an assistant professor of surgery at The Ohio State University.
Drs. Johnson and Zhao decided to come to Memphis when they discovered the opportunities to work in the rich medical and teaching environment offered by UT Health Science Center.
“To me, teaching medical students and residents is a very gratifying in that they will go on to use some of that knowledge and experience to then go help other patients and learners in the future,” Johnson said. “It really hits home, when I’ll sometimes start saying the same lines that my attending once said to me. I love the idea that I am part of a chain passing along knowledge from one generation of
surgeons to the next.”
Both surgeons not only enjoy the multidisciplinary aspect of their work, but also the specialization. Johnson, who has been named the new robotic curriculum mentor, is focused on minimally invasive approaches including advanced endoscopy, complex hernia repair, and robotic surgery. Dr. Zhao is focused on robotic thoracic surgery with an emphasis on lung cancers, esophageal cancers, benign foregut disease, and mediastinal disease.
Dr. David Shibata, Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery, noted, “We are extremely fortunate to have recruited not just one but two outstanding surgeons who are highly trained and serve as role models with their skill, dedication and compassion.”
