EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: KARI CONRAD Congratulations to Kari Conrad, project manager, on being selected as the December 2017 employee of the month (pictured above with Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Kennard Brown, far right, Emile J. David, associate vice chancellor, left and Kenneth Bradshaw, director of facilities, far left). Kari’s nomination outlined how she recently went above and beyond for one of her own projects. Kari was seen rolling up her sleeves to help with keeping the project on track and picked up a paint roller in the Madison Plaza to assist with painting during the project renovation. Kenny Bradshaw was on vacation and received a picture via text of her in action with a paint roller and pan. Kari, jumped in without hesitation and started helping the painters get the task moved forward. This is a shining example of teamwork and a teamplayer willing to help out to keep the project on track. The picture was forwarded to both Emile David and Dr. Kennard Brown and they gave it a thumbs up and expressed thanks for being an awesome team player. It’s this kind of willing spirit that helps get to the end result on campus projects. Thank you, Kari, for being a huge part of your team’s, the department’s and the campus’ success. Job Well Done!

CUSTODIAL STAFF - SAC

Cedric Woodson, Custodial Supervisor The Custodial Staff of the (SAC) Student Alumni Center, completed a very daunting task of cleaning the exterior staircases of the facility. The staff was issued safety uniforms, equipment and gear for the assigned project. This accomplishment spotlights the cohesiveness and teamwork of the entire SAC custodial staff: Jeri Clark, Dorothy Dunbar, Barbara Lamb, LaDerrick Means, Tiffany Presley. Cedric Woodson, custodial supervisor wanted to be sure and recognize his staff for their hard work and commitment to UTHSC. Great job team.

ALL HANDS ON DECK

Kari Conrad, Project Manager Kari Conrad, project manager is pictured below rolling up her sleeves to help with keeping the Madison Plaza project on track. Kenny Bradshaw, director, was on vacation in and received pictures via text message of Kari in action with a paint roller and pan. This is a shining example of teamwork and the willingness to help out to keep projects on track, even if it’s your own project. Good Job, Kari.

MADISON PLAZA LOBBY AND FOOD COURT Kari Conrad and Ray West, Project Managers

Renovations are complete for the Madison Plaza food court area. The transformation of before and after is rather awesome. It’s amazing what a nice coat of white paint, new flooring and updated lighting can really do for a space. The food court seating areas have been upgraded. The next phase of the renovations will include the food service bays and the main lobby area and efforts will continue into January 2018, until the project is completed. Almost every facilities department and several vendors are currently working as a team on this project! Take a look below.

HVAC DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT

Allen Barton, HVAC Superintendent, Brent Stiles, PM Supervisor and Aldric Holiday, HVAC Supervisor One of the most critical jobs within facilities is in the mechanical department. The department is comprised of boiler operations which was spotlighted in last month’s newsletter and the HVAC and PM Departments (pictured left). Their responsibilities include boilers, chillers, cooling towers, steam conducting systems, chilled water producing systems, air/water cooled package units and split systems, associated controls and control air compressors, heating hot water, pumps, fans, and other equipment for proper operation and maintenance of the environmental systems. In addition, the responsibility for the proper operations of all fume hoods and exhausts systems on campus falls to the PM Department. With the shortage of HVAC mechanics, the PM crew continues to filled the void successfully and they are both among the first to respond to emergencies. This team, works with and assists others, and no doubt deserves the recognition. Allen Barton, HVAC superintendent, wants his entire team to know he is proud of them, including supervisors for their efforts each and every day. A huge thank you for doing such a great job keeping the UT campus up and running.

CAMPUS SAFETY NEWS - EYE INJURY PREVENTION Scott Campbell, Campus Safety Officer

According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), each day about 2000 U.S. workers sustain a job-related eye injury that requires medical treatment. About one third of the injuries are treated in hospital emergency departments, and more than 100 of these injuries result in one or more days away from work. (CDC, 2017).Common injuries include corneal abrasions, which are scratches on the clear, front surface of the eye. They can result from merely rubbing your eye or from wearing contacts too long, or from a speck of “something” in the eye or being poked in the eye by some object. Common eye injuries are caused by: • Striking or scraping: The majority of eye injuries result from small particles or objects striking or scraping the eye, such as: dust, cement chips, metal slivers, and wood chips. These materials are often ejected by tools, windblown, or fall from above a worker. Large objects may also strike the eye or face, or a worker may run into an object causing blunt-force trauma to the eyeball or eye socket. • Penetration: Objects like nails, staples, or slivers of wood or metal can go through the eyeball and result in a permanent loss of vision. Chemical and thermal burns: Industrial chemicals or cleaning products are common causes of chemical burns to one or both eyes. Thermal burns to the eye also occur, often among welders. These burns routinely damage workers’ eyes and surrounding tissue. What can workers do to prevent eye injury and disease?

OUR MISSION

Wear personal protective eyewear, such as goggles, face shields, safety glasses, or full face respirators.

The Facilities Services Department is responsible for the basic operation and continuous maintenance of the physical properties of The University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

The eye protection chosen for specific work situations depends upon the nature and extent of the hazard, the circumstances of exposure, other protective equipment used, and personal vision needs. Eye protection should be fit to an individual or adjustable to provide appropriate coverage. It should be comfortable and allow for sufficient peripheral vision.
