As the University of Tennessee Health Science Center celebrated its annual Employee Appreciation Day in September, two employees were commended for a recent act of heroism (pictured above with UTHSC Executive Vice Chancellor and COO Dr. Ken Brown, Chancellor Dr. Steve Schwab, and Interim UT President Randy Boyd). Will Johnson, a custodial supervisor, and Rhonda Jones, a senior custodian, were driving to the Facilities Administration Building off East Street on the morning of September 16 to get fitted for new uniforms, when they witnessed a car wreck on Union Avenue. Shortly after, they noticed one of the cars involved in the accident catch on fire with a woman trapped inside. Instinct kicked in and Johnson and Jones reacted immediately to quickly remove the woman from the car. Shortly after the women’s car burst into flames, and severely burned one of the vehicles involved in the crash, which Johnson described as “blazing.” An ambulance came to take the woman, who was in and out of consciousness, for treatment. Johnson has been at UTHSC for 29 years and says his favorite things about working at the university are meeting new people, the benefits, and the good work environment. For going above and beyond their duties as custodial staff, Johnson and Jones were recognized in front of the entire campus community and each received spot-bonus checks of $1,000. “To me, it wasn’t to be a hero or anything like that,” Johnson said. “If I had to do it all over again, I would react the same. I don’t want to see anyone burn up. This lady was not able to get out. I was just glad to be able to be at the right place, at the right time.” “This was a case of the unsung heroes who daily serve us here at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and who often go unnoticed and underappreciated,” said Anthony Berryhill, UTHSC Chief of Campus Police. “I am so proud to recognize two individuals that reacted swiftly and without the desire of accolades. These individuals who placed the safety of another before their own not realizing their action potentially saved the life of a young woman.”

CAMPUS EVENTS/EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY Peace, Love and UTHSC

Facilities employees enjoyed a few hours away from their busy work day to attend the Annual Employee Appreciation celebration. Employees look forward to this day, every year to relax and unwind for a bit in a beautiful outdoor setting filled with food, fun, music and most of all dancing. The University appreciates everything you do and we celebrate you for all of your hard work and dedication! Our special guest this year was Interim UT President Randy Boyd.

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS FAIR Human Resources

Facilities employees took advantage of information available during the recent Employee Benefits Fair. The event provides a great opportunity for faculty, staff, and retirees to discuss with representatives all plan options such as: medical, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, retirement plans, investment programs and more. It also allows for employees to interact with on-site vendors to get their questions answered in advance of making upcoming plan changes.

FACILITIES EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Custodial Department - Coleman Building

Brenda Coleman, cardiology fellowship coordinator, wanted to spotlight one of the custodial employees. Below is a portion of the email she sent to facilities management:

MICAH FORD ACHIEVES MASTER PLUMBER CERTIFICATION Facilities Plumbing Services

Congratulations to Micah Ford, Plumber, who has achieved his Master Plumber Certification. Micah was hired here at the UTHSC in Feb, 2011 and went from construction plumbing to maintenance plumbing. Micah explained that he was inspired to pursue his Masters License by Kenneth Bradshaw, Facilities director and Kimberly Moore, admin director, Facilities Business Office, who took the time to help him get into the necessary classes. He also received encouragement from his supervisor and other co-workers. Great Job on your accomplishment Micah!

“My name is Brenda Coleman. Today was a day that started off rough but due to your dedicated employees ended up good. I had car trouble this morning and was running late. I call Tabitha (White) in the Coleman building and told her what was happening and she and her crew, Dorthea (Leisure) and Ronald (Lloyd) stepped right in. Tabitha made sure my food was delivered to the right conference room and set up. She had the applicants seated in the lobby and Dorthea and Ronald made certain all rooms were open and ready for a 7 am start time. I could not have done this without them and none of this is a part of their job description. Good people willing to help. I appreciate them and wanted you to know you have a great crew in the Coleman building!!! Have a great day, as I will, thanks to them. Great job Tabitha, Ronald and Dorthea!

CELEBRATION TIME!

Facilities celebrated the campus custodial staff’s hard work and dedication with a special luncheon to thank them ahead of National Custodial Worker appreciation day which fell on Oct 2. We wanted to take time to pay tribute to the men and women who work tirelessly to clean and maintain the many buildings here on the UTHSC campus. Thank you for keeping all of the campus looking pristine, which in turn creates an enjoyable working space for all employees and a clean environment for campus visitors. Pictures below are from the celebrations. Job well done to the entire custodial staff!
