From the Dean I have spent the last few months since being named dean of the UTHSC College of Dentistry traveling the region to connect with our wonderful alumni. I have been welcomed enthusiastically across Tennessee and into Mississippi and Arkansas. Let me first express my thanks. As a two-time alumnus of the University of Tennessee and an alumnus of the College of Dentistry Class of 1984, I share your pride in our alma mater, as well as a dedication to further its illustrious history. Our college, the oldest dental college in the South and the third-oldest public college of dentistry in the United States, enjoys an outstanding record of clinical excellence. I pledge to strengthen and grow this legacy for future generations in our profession. I have plans to extend our statewide presence, grow our research enterprise, update our facilities, and continue to recruit the best and brightest students and faculty. I am so pleased to share our ongoing successes and our aspirations for the future in this magazine. Each of us has benefited from our time and training in the UTHSC College of Dentistry. I invite you to return that gift by connecting or reconnecting with your college. Our future is bright. Come and share the exciting journey. Sincerely,

UTHSC COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY | WINTER 2018
From the Chancellor After an extensive nationwide search, we are pleased to have selected one of our own as the new dean of the College of Dentistry. We are confident that Dr. James Ragain, with his outstanding clinical, administrative, and executive experience, is the best person to lead the college into the future. This is an exciting time for the College of Dentistry. Dr. Ragain has great plans for strengthening the academic, clinical, and research missions of the college. As an alumnus, he has a heart for the college’s history, its alumni, and for the students who are the future of the profession. It is also an exciting time for the university as a whole. In May, we opened the doors of our new Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Simulation in Memphis. With the latest in technology and a collaborative, team-based training model, every day we are making sure our graduates will be ready to deliver the best care possible in the future. I am happy to share a few other recent achievements. A new Economic Impact Report shows UTHSC contributed a record $4 billion to the state’s economy in Fiscal Year 2017. In addition, enrollment, graduation rates, and first-time board pass rates continue to climb. We have successfully recruited many top-tier faculty and researchers to the university, and our outstanding faculty and students have supported the community with hundreds of volunteer hours and free health services for the underserved. We are proud of all the accomplishments. We are looking ahead. And we are grateful for the continued engagement and support from you, our outstanding alumni, in all we do. Sincerely,
Steve J. Schwab, MD Chancellor The University of Tennessee Health Science Center
From the Alumni Board President Fellow Alumni, It has been a pleasure serving on the alumni board and I am honored to have the opportunity to take the lead as president. During my time in this role, I have been able to connect with many alumni. While there has always been an appreciation of how the college has prepared students for success after graduation, it seems there is now a renewed excitement. Not only has the college experienced an increase in pass rates on board scores, graduation rates remain strong, and the recruitment cycle continues to identify dynamic students for enrollment. Most importantly, our new dean, James ‘Jay’ Ragain, has publicly and privately communicated that his top priority is clinical excellence. As an alumnus, it is a pleasure knowing that our dean is committed to continuing this UT tradition, which I believe has connected alumni throughout the history of the college. The board is unanimous in its support of the dean’s vision and we look forward to assisting the college in achieving this goal. We do, however, understand that we will not be successful without the full support of the alumni body. I encourage you to support the college as the dean pursues his vision. Alumni have impacted the college through giving, voluntarism, and feedback. I hope you will engage in a way that is meaningful for you. I look forward to meeting you one day at an event or program. Attending the 2019 William F. Slagle Dental Meeting in Memphis, March 1-3, is a great way to connect with your peers and learn more about the college. Thanks again for all you do. All the best,
C. L. ‘Leeby’ Greenblatt, DDS, ’67

UTHSC COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY | WINTER 2018
Along with emphasizing clinical excellence, Dean Ragain is committed to increasing scholarly activity, including research, in the college.
Clinical and Research Excellence, Community Service Focus of Dean’s Vision By Peggy Reisser
Dean James Ragain is honoring the past, as he builds the College of Dentistry’s future. A COD alumnus, Dean Ragain said he is proud of the college’s history of clinical excellence and has set his sights on taking it to the next level. He also aspires to encourage more research and boost the college’s reputation as a leader in oral health care. “I want the UTHSC College of Dentistry to be widely recognized for excellence in clinical education, innovative research, and leadership in the improvement of oral health for Tennesseans, the Mid-South region, and the global community,” the dean said.
With clinical excellence in dental education as the cornerstone of his vision, Dean Ragain said the college will continue to focus on recruiting exceptional students and faculty, and strengthen and update facilities and equipment. “I think teaching is why we’re primarily here,” he said. “It’s what I call the Tennessee tradition — a tradition of clinical excellence. And so, that’s going to be goal Number 1, to make sure all the dentists and hygienists who graduate are the best they can be.” Closely tied to education is infrastructure. The college’s new $46 million Delta Dental Building will begin to rise on

Union Avenue in Memphis next year. The modern glassand-steel structure will wrap the Dunn Dental Building, providing more clinical space for training, and at Dr. Ragain’s request, additional seminar rooms for dental students in all classes to connect, hold presentations, and gather. He hopes to have space for first- and secondyear students in the new building, “so they feel more a part of things.” In expanding the research enterprise, Dr. Ragain will emphasize recruitment of funded researchers to develop a dental research program that focuses on well-developed and innovative projects with an interdisciplinary approach within the college, with other institutions across the country, and with industry. He also wants to encourage development of student researchers. Dr. Ragain praised the college’s strong statewide outreach, which he fully supports. The College of Dentistry has clinics across Tennessee that serve the underserved. Fourth-year students, under the supervision of faculty, provide services at clinics in Union City, Bristol, and Chattanooga, as well as at smaller clinics in health department facilities in Somerville and Covington. The college recently opened a dental residency program in Nashville in conjunction with Saint Thomas Health and the Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center that will improve access to dental care for the underserved there.

He said he supports and encourages the college’s longstanding emphasis on community outreach on the part of faculty, staff, and students. Already, Dr. Ragain has introduced a new focus on oral and systemic population-based health care. “We have outstanding faculty and staff. I think I’m walking into a wonderful situation with that,” he said. “I think our students are outstanding. We have highly qualified students who are eager to learn, and certainly, last but not least, our alumni are fantastic.” Dr. Ragain is a two-time alumnus of institutions in the UT System, having received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the UTHSC College of Dentistry. He is the first alumnus of the UTHSC College of Dentistry to become dean. Alumni are a key focus for the dean, who says he “bleeds orange.” “We’re going to engage the alumni in what we do here,” Dean Ragain said. An active member of the College of Dentistry Alumni Board of Trustees for 14 years, he has held several board positions, and is a past president of the alumni association. To strengthen ties on behalf of the college, the dean has spent weeks meeting with alumni across the state.
COD faculty and students provided 1,105 procedures worth $22,188 for free to students of Memphis’ Freedom Prep Academy during Give Kids a Smile Day. Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Ken Brown, center, is pictured with the Freedom Prep students.
The College of Dentistry educates more than 70 percent of the dentists in Tennessee and roughly half of the dentists in Arkansas. Because of this, the dean is also working to deepen ties with Arkansas alumni, as well as with the dental community in that state. Dean Ragain is encouraging diversity in the college, and has reached out to the Shelby County Dental Association to initiate a partnership. He most recently served as an associate professor in Restorative Dentistry and interim chair of the Department of General Practice Dentistry for the College of Dentistry. Before joining UTHSC in 2013, Dr. Ragain completed a very successful career in the United States Navy, rising to the rank of captain. In this role, he had major administrative, clinical, education, and research responsibilities. A native of East Tennessee, Dean Ragain was commissioned into the Navy Dental Corps after graduating from the College of Dentistry in 1984. While in the Navy, he served in numerous senior administrative positions in clinical dentistry and dental research, and he held several adjunct faculty positions. He directed the largest Operative Dentistry Department in the Navy at the Naval Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois, and commanded the Naval Dental Research Institute/
Naval Institute for Dental and Biomedical Research for four years. He retired from the Navy, and became a faculty member of the College of Dentistry. Dean Ragain holds a master’s degree in restorative dentistry from the University of Michigan and a PhD in oral biology/dental materials from The Ohio State University. He is the co-author of more than 75 professional publications and holds three U.S. patent awards. He is on the editorial board of four professional journals and served on a joint NASA subcommittee studying dental issues and treatment of astronauts deployed on long-term space missions. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. “It was never my ambition to be in this position,” Dean Ragain said. “But I’m honored, humbled, and very excited about this opportunity.” The Dean’s Vision At A Glance • Build on History of Clinical Excellence • Expand Scholarly Activity •E ncourage Community Oral Health and Outreach Initiatives • Connect with Alumni

College of Dentistry Launches New Department of General Dentistry By Jackie Denton
The College of Dentistry has merged the Departments of General Practice Dentistry and Restorative Dentistry in an effort to improve the continuity and transition from the preclinical to clinical years for dental students. Launched in the fall, the Department of General Dentistry, is the largest department for the college and encompasses two divisions, Operative Dentistry and Group Practice Dentistry. The new department is led by Mojdeh Dehghan, DDS, interim chair; Bill Callahan, DDS, vice chair and director of Group Practice Dentistry; and James Simon, DDS, director of Operative Dentistry. The Department of General Dentistry is implementing a new educational model centered on integration of different disciplines and departments throughout the entire college, encouraging collaborative learning among students, faculty, and alumni. “Our goal with this new department is to integrate the preclinical and clinical curriculums together in a more systematic way to improve the educational experience of our dental school students and to give continuity to the knowledge they are receiving,” Dr. Dehghan said. The administration looked at educational models used at dental schools across the country, including NYU, Texas A&M College of Dentistry, and the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston and San Antonio, which were using the integrated model. Previously, students in the UTHSC College of Dentistry would begin their academic journey in the preclinical years, without exposure to the clinical curriculum or even the faculty who would oversee their training in the clinics. First- and second-year students took their lecture courses and labs in the General Education Building and would not have exposure to the clinics in the Dunn Dental Building until their third year of dental school.

“One of the things we had seen happen with the division between the two departments was a disconnect and lack of continuity between the information students received in the preclinical and clinical curriculums,” said Dr. Dehghan. “This new integrated educational model allows students to maximize their learning experience and appreciate the interrelationships between various academic and clinical disciplines. Our goal is to help students develop their skill on simulators, learning the latest techniques and using the latest technology, and seamlessly transition this knowledge to direct patient care in the clinic.” Earlier exposure to the clinics even in preclinical years has many benefits including increased familiarity with the patient-provider dynamic, computer systems, record taking, charting, and even the instruments and equipment. “We are slowly introducing all these changes, so hopefully next fall they will be implemented and the transition from preclinical to clinical will be smoother,” Dr. Dehghan said. The department has developed a student advisory board made up of student leaders and an alumni advisory board. Both advisory boards will offer insights into the effectiveness of the curriculum changes, and make recommendations for future developments. The department hopes to develop a pool of volunteer faculty through the alumni board. First-year students also will have a faculty adviser and mentor, along with mentorship from second-, third-, and fourth-year students under the new model. “From day one, we want our students to feel like they are a part of this bigger family,” Dr. Dehghan said. “They’ll have mentorship, so emotionally and technically they’ll have a support mechanism from the start.”

“Because I’m typically not the one providing the dental care, my mission is to impart my knowledge and share that knowledge with other people, and help them to become better clinicians.” Martha Wells, DMD, MS
Wells Named First Heber Simmons, Jr., Endowed Professor of Pediatric Dentistry By Jackie Denton
The College of Dentistry has named Martha Wells, DMD, MS, as its first Heber Simmons, Jr., Endowed Professor of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Wells is the director of Graduate Pediatric Dentistry and an associate professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health. The Heber Simmons, Jr., Endowed Professorship of Pediatric Dentistry was established to honor Heber Simmons, Jr., DDS, MS, for his contributions to the field of pediatric oral health. Dr. Simmons is a dual alumnus of UTHSC, where he received his MS (’57) and DDS (’62) degrees. Throughout his career he has been an advocate for pediatric dental care. He is credited with raising more than $100 million in legislative appropriations to support pediatric dental education. Led by friends of Dr. Simmons, alumni, and faculty of the College of Dentistry, the endowed professorship was chaired by Pitts Hinson, DDS, (’75). The committee included Larry Dormois, DDS, MS; Vent Murphy, DDS, MS, (’86); Steve Fuson, DDS, MS, (’92); Dr. Brad Wilkinson, DDS, MS, (’91); John Bogert, DDS; Charlie Hall, DDS, MS, (’62); Paul Kennedy, Jr., DDS; Jasper L. Lewis, Jr., DDS, MS; Jerry Miller, DDS, MSD; Stephen Moss, DDS, MS; and Charlie Wilkinson, DDS, MS, (’57). On the faculty at UTHSC for more than eight years, Dr. Wells said she is honored to receive this distinction. “I know Heber, and he’s been a very supportive alumnus of the program,” she said. “He’s really a giant in pediatric dentistry and has done so much for the specialty from a political standpoint. It’s really an honor to even be under his name and to know him personally. He’s really a wonderful human being.” Through his advocacy and commitment to the profession, Dr. Simmons secured millions of dollars in federal funding, which has been used to increase the number of pediatric dentists and pediatric dental faculty throughout the country. He has served as a congressional expert panelist in promoting initiatives in improving access for underserved communities and children. In addition to advocacy work, Dr. Simmons maintained a private practice for more than 55 years in Jackson, Mississippi.
Originally from Eastman, Georgia, Dr. Wells had her sights set on working in genetics, until she had the opportunity to shadow a pediatric dentist. Through that experience, she decided to pursue dentistry instead. Dr. Wells is a graduate of Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. She received her advanced training in pediatric dentistry from The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Dr. Wells is active on many professional boards, including the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry’s Qualifying Examination and Oral Examination Committees. She served as the 2014 president of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society, and on the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Annual Session Scientific Programming Committee. Her work has appeared in many publications, including Pediatric Dentistry, the Journal of the American Dental Association, the International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry, Dental Traumatology, and the Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry. In addition, she is an editor for “Pediatric Dentistry: Infancy through Adolescence,” a leading textbook for pediatric dental education. She has been honored with many awards, including the Dr. John Diggs Nelson Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Dental Education, the College of Dentistry Dean’s Appreciation Award, and is an Outstanding Mentor Academy inductee. She hopes to continue Dr. Simmons’ work by securing the future of pediatric dentistry through the students and residents she educates. She has served as a research mentor and adviser to more than 17 fellows and postgraduate students. “Because I’m typically not the one providing the dental care, my mission is to impart my knowledge and share that knowledge with other people, and help them to become better clinicians,” Dr. Wells said. “If I make them better clinicians and better critical thinkers, and more sensitive to cultural needs and becoming patient advocates, then I can hopefully improve the lives of children, even if I’m not holding the handpiece.”

New Dental Hygiene Community Fund Helps Those in Need By Jackie Denton
Lynn Russell knows that even a small gift can make a big difference in someone’s life.
the x-ray, cleaning, and comprehensive exam, for those who otherwise would not be able to afford it.
Last fall, she collaborated with the College of Dentistry, the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs, and the Office of Finance to establish the Dental Hygiene Community Fund. The fund provides x-rays, dental exams, and cleanings for Memphians in need.
“A lot of times, those people who need it the most, are the ones who can’t afford it,” Dr. Russell said. “Think about a single mom who has no money and maybe would feel so much better if she could get her teeth cleaned or have her children’s teeth taken care of. Typical, they find a way for their children, but mothers are always the last ones, dads, too. If it came down to if I were going to put food down on the table or have my teeth cleaned, I’m going to put food on the table for my children.”
“You see things on social media or on the news all the time about barbers giving someone a free haircut and how much better they felt afterward,” said Russell, RDH, MEd, EdD, chair and graduate program coordinator of the Department of Dental Hygiene in the College of Dentistry. “So I thought, we talk every day, we have to eat, and so many times we look at people’s teeth. Why not provide a service for our community?” She also wanted to find a way for the typical dental hygienist to have the opportunity to give back to the college and the community. The fund also helps dental hygiene students, because patients referred to the fund fit the criteria for teaching cases. Teaching cases are patients with unique dental care needs that are not typically seen in the majority of the patient population coming through the dental clinics. “When I came here, I started giving back to the school, and in that process of donating back, it occurred to me that typically dental hygienists don’t give a lot of money back to the school,” said Dr. Russell, who is a dual UTHSC alumna (DH ’75 and BSDH ’77). “We are not the big-bucks earners, we usually don’t make six-figure salaries, so I thought there has to be a way you could give money to the school and know what it’s going to.” Donations can start at any amount, but a donation of $25, will provide preventive dental treatment, which includes

This was the reality for one patient, who recently benefited from the fund. “When I spoke to one of our guys who recently received treatment, he told me this was the first time in his life that he has ever been to the dentist,” said Kevin Potter, area director for Safe Harbor of Memphis, a local recovery, support, and transitional housing program. Safe Harbor is one of the first in Memphis to benefit from the Dental Hygiene Community Fund. “This gentleman took care of himself, but he could never afford dental care. He was always on the street and had a part-time job, so he had to choose food over going to the dentist.” Potter said, the fund can be life-changing. “Our guys feel like someone outside of our program cares about them, and that boosts their confidence,” he said. “It has been staggering to watch their faces light up.” The College of Dentistry welcomes donations for the Dental Hygiene Community Fund. Working for Better Oral Health Locally and Globally By Amber Carter
The College of Dentistry has a long-standing commitment to public service and community outreach. Along with ensuring academic and clinical excellence and raising the research profile of the college, Dean James Ragain has his eye on increasing the college’s commitment to better health for all.
In fact, the university chose the social determinants of health as the topic of its Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The QEP is a multiyear commitment that focuses on transforming student learning. A focus on the social determinants of health will become “the big idea” for students and will inform and enhance their training.
Toward that goal, Dr. Ragain has named Waletha Wasson, DDS, MPA, MS, MAGD, an associate professor in the Department of General Dentistry, to lead the charge. Dr. Wasson will be the program director of social determinants and oral systemic care for a new initiative titled, “A 21st Century Initiative: Oral-Systemic and Population-Based Health for All.” The initiative is built around the social determinants of health — the economic, environmental, and social conditions that affect populations.
Among the College of Dentistry’s many continuing outreach programs are:
“Over the last 50 years, milestone publications by WHO (the World Health Organization), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and many others have focused on the prevention of non-communicable chronic diseases regarding oral health and systemic health in the 21st century,” said Dr. Wasson, who has been with the college for 30 years. “WHO’s preventive strategies and health for all are the focus of our introductory title. It will help us from regional, state, national, and global perspectives to address the social determinants of health that affect oral-systemic health and health care. Our dean, Dr. James Ragain, wants this initiative to go beyond conversations and to include the expansion of dental care in all policies and for all populations. I now have the awesome opportunity and responsibility to develop and guide it. I will call on many leaders within the College of Dentistry, UTHSC, the Mid-South, statewide, across the country, and internationally.” The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the social determinants of health as “the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age.” The organization also notes that these circumstances are “shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national, and local levels.” Considering these factors, UTHSC has set community outreach as a major priority.

• Tennessee Smiles, which annually provides complimentary oral health screenings and oral health information at local health fairs throughout the Memphis area. The grassroots initiative, comprised of College of Dentistry faculty, staff, and students, serves the underserved population. Initiated by Dr. Wasson, the program has performed dental screenings and spread awareness through education about the importance of oral health to more than 15,000 people at approximately 493 community events since its inception in 2003. • The Mid-South Mission of Mercy, an initiative of the Memphis Dental Society and Shelby County Dental Society, is a free, two-day dental clinic for the underserved and underinsured in Memphis and the surrounding area. UTHSC’s colleges, including dentistry, nursing, medicine and others, are key providers in this effort. This year, the clinic provided free treatments worth $1,104,654, which includes 2,158 extractions, 1,983 comprehensive oral exams, 753 fillings, and 1,997 radiographs. • Give Kids a Smile Day, launched in 2003 by the American Dental Association, provides free dental services to children through the help of volunteers. The College of Dentistry has participated in the national event for the past five years. Dental procedures are performed by UTHSC dentistry and dental hygiene students under the supervision of faculty. Some of the procedures provided include examinations, cleanings, fillings, extractions, and fluoride applications. This year, the college helped more than 80 children, performing 1,105 procedures valued at $22,188. Although the new initiative is still in the early stages, Dr. Wasson is hopeful about its future. “We are still developing,” she said. “I am working to gather different tools and resources locally, regionally, and internationally to ensure that this initiative is successful for years to come.”
Dr. Waletha Wasson has led many community oral health outreach initiatives during her 30 years in the COD.
Dr. Wasson’s Personal Motivation to Enhance Public Health and Well-Being By Peggy Reisser A family health crisis set Dr. Waletha Wasson on a path toward her new role as the leader of a population health initiative in the College of Dentistry. Dr. Wasson’s daughter, Epiphany Turner, was diagnosed with lupus in 2016. Turner was a 23-year-old tennis star with her sights set on competing her way into the ranks of the Women’s Tennis Association. The disease leveled the young athlete for a time, but mother and daughter combined their strengths to fight it. That battle gave Dr. Wasson, a general dentist with a master’s degree in public administration, an upclose and personal experience in navigating the health care system in the face of noncommunicable chronic disease. In her new position she wants to help others, particularly those less fortunate, successfully traverse the system when necessary and live healthier lives so they never have to. “It just opened up a whole new world for me,” Dr. Wasson said of her daughter’s illness that came on gradually and lingered as they tried to find solutions. “It brought it all into focus because I had to learn how to navigate the health
care system and I realized the importance of having interprofessional cooperation in treatment.” Turner was in Atlanta when she was diagnosed. “I was with her for six weeks and I didn’t think she was going to make it,” Dr. Wasson said. The dentist began to research the disease, eventually going to conferences on systemic disease, nutrition, and autoimmune issues. “I began to understand some of the issues that might have caused the problem.” Turner said she believes her mom’s support was crucial to her recovery. “If it wasn’t for my mom’s health care knowledge and connections, it would have taken us many months to get seen by a rheumatologist to begin a treatment plan,” she said. As her daughter improved, Dr. Wasson’s focus expanded to general population health, including the role oral health plays in overall wellness. “I want to return the mouth to the discussion of the body,” she said. “I want to make sure dentistry is at the table for all policies and health care discussion.” Turner, now 25, is back on track. In August, she graduated from the University of Memphis with a degree in interdisciplinary studies and has been certified as a teaching tennis pro. She lives in Atlanta and is working her way up the ranks of competition in the International Tennis Federation. “She’s not a quitter, she’s a champion,” her mom said. After three decades on the faculty of the College of Dentistry, Dr. Wasson is no quitter, either. And she is committed to enhancing the college’s mission to improve oral health and overall health for all.

“There’s definitely no age gap when we are onstage,” said Mike Estivo, who just wrapped up a stint as the band’s drummer.
The feeling is mutual, according to Dean James Ragain, a founding Dentone. “We have this Dentone persona, which is totally different than our day jobs,” he said. “You get to go up there and act a little bit, dress up, and just kind of let yourself go.”
And it’s safe to say that more than age dissolves when The Dentones are rocking. Most of the members are professors in the UTHSC College of Dentistry. The new drummer is a third-year dental student, and the guy handling the bass and jumping in on vocals is the new dean. The Dentones came together in the summer of 2016 in response to an invitation to play at a dental fraternity charity fund-raiser. They’ve stayed together because they’re having a blast. “It’s been remarkable to be able to connect with these guys on a whole different level,” Estivo said, shortly before he graduated from the College of Dentistry in the spring. “I think we’ve bonded over music. I’ve become great 16

In addition to Dean Ragain, The Dentones include Tim Lanier, assistant vice chancellor for Alumni Affairs, rhythm guitar and vocals; David Umsted, DDS, associate professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, lead guitar; Mark Anderson, DDS, interim chair of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences and Oral Medicine, lead guitar; Vernon Pennington, DDS, assistant professor in the Department of General Practice Dentistry, keyboards and group leader. Another founding member who covered vocals and percussion, Tony Wicks, DDS, MS, was chair of the Department of Prosthodontics and is retiring.
Dental student Julie Nessler was recruited earlier this year as the new drummer for the Dentones.
Dental student Julie Nessler was recruited earlier this year for drums, thanks to classmates who suggested her to the dean. She’d been a member of the drumline in high school in Dallas and in college in Arkansas, but had not touched her drum set since then. “They invited me to play one night to get to know them,” she said. “At first, I was scared to death.” But the group made her feel at home, and now she is even being asked to do some vocals – not her strong suit, she said. Other new members include dental faculty Ron Staples, DDS, trumpet, and Darryl Jones, DDS, saxophone, as well as UTHSC Director of Admissions and Operations Ann Salina. The band is not without a music pedigree. All have been involved in music one way or another throughout their lives, though for most, real life and dentistry pushed music to the back burner. “There are quite a few dentists who do play instruments or have played instruments in the past,” Dean Ragain said. “What happens is, they spend so much time in school and they get busy doing their practice and they kind of leave it behind. But I know several faculty members here who play in orchestras. We could probably put a mega-band together if we wanted to.” The members had talked individually from time to time about playing together, but it wasn’t until the fund-raiser in January 2017 that the band coalesced.
Dean Ragain keeps a custom bobblehead of him playing the bass in his office in the College of Dentistry.
They met for the first time in the music room at the Ragain home. Each proposed some songs, and they got to work. Rock and Rollers, The Dentones cover songs from the Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin, The Yardbirds, ’60s and ’70s hits, some of which the students might not even recognize. But no worries, it takes only a few minutes to break the ice, before the dancing begins. The first fund-raiser was a big success. “They said, ‘you can come back anytime,’ ” Dean Ragain said. In 2018, the band rocked the house again at the January fund-raiser with eight new songs. Again, they were invited back. They played for a graduation party in the spring to send off the Class of 2018, and are preparing for the annual student fund-raiser in early 2019. The Dentones are not consumed with making a name for themselves, even though they rehearse regularly and are open to any gigs that come their way. They march to a different drummer. “Plain and simple, it is just a lot of fun to be a part of The Dentones,” Lanier said. “Whether we are rehearsing or performing, we have a great time.”

Mom Was Motivation for Student Jack Kang to Pursue Dentistry By Amber Carter
Jack Kang’s mother was his inspiration to pursue dentistry. “During her childhood, there was not enough emphasis on oral health, and as a consequence, she did not have the proper instruction to maintain her teeth,” Kang said. “When the dire state of her oral health became apparent, she learned about the numerous procedures that she needed to correct her smile. The list included extractions, root canals, fillings, crowns, and a partial denture. For years, I witnessed my mother’s timidity when it came to the appearance of her smile, and it has been astounding to see her shift in confidence.” Kang, who will graduate from the College of Dentistry in May, was born in Beijing, China, but considers Memphis home. He received his bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Kang became acquainted with UTHSC while participating in the Tennessee Institute of Pre-Professionals (TIP) summer program during his undergraduate years. “I was exposed to the dental school’s facilities, such as the GEB laboratories and the Dunn Dental Clinic,” he said. “I also met many of the dental school’s friendly faculty members, including Dr. Covington, our dean of admissions. The TIP program also worked closely with SASSI, which provided us with academic support, such as textbooks, study aids, and counseling services. Lastly, Memphis is my hometown. Being close to my family was an important factor drawing me to the UTHSC College of Dentistry.”

Kang is heavily involved in community outreach. “Community outreach is a huge part of dentistry, because a patient’s inability to pay should not hinder their access to dental care,” he said. “One way I give back as a dental student is by volunteering through Remote Area Medical, a free dental clinic serving the underprivileged. We have an active chapter here at UTHSC that organizes trips to these clinics. I am always moved when a patient gives me a hug and tells me how much they appreciate me. These responses from patients gave me genuine satisfaction as a future health care professional.” At UTHSC, Kang serves as president of the American Dental Education Association. “Our goal is to provide the education aspect of dentistry to dental students, and we do so by inviting guest speakers to talk about topics such as residencies, continuing education courses, and research,” he said. “I feel that by learning practical knowledge that is not taught in the classrooms, we will be better equipped to face the real world of dentistry. My position has not only allowed me to become better in my leadership skills, but also allowed me to connect with other students and professionals in ways like never before.” After graduation, Kang plans to become an associate dentist in a private practice. “I do not want to stop learning,” he said. “Placing dental implants and utilizing the latest dental technology are on the top of my list of continuing education credits that I want to pursue. My ultimate goal is to one day build my own private practice and foster long-lasting relationships with my patients and their families.”

Former Public Health Tech Finds World of Options in Dentistry By Amber Carter
After she graduated from high school, Marie Alston went on to serve her country as a public health technician in the United States Air Force. She educated the community on communicable diseases and food safety. “I enjoyed working in the health care profession when I was in the Air Force,” Alston said. “Interacting and sharing my knowledge with the community was great. However, I wanted a career where I could work more closely with patients. A career where I could really help people and make a difference in their life, bringing their self-confidence back. The field of dentistry does all that.” Alston is now a fourth-year dental student at UTHSC. She moved to Memphis from Bentonville, Arkansas, but was raised in Columbus, Georgia. After completing her service in the Air Force, she received an associate’s degree in computer science and a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. Alston said she chose to attend the College of Dentistry because of its strong clinical focus and its investment in technology. “UTHSC provides more hands-on clinical experience than most dental schools,” she said. “I remember my first day, I got my instruments and we were off to prepping teeth in the dental simulation lab. This was great because the sooner you get your hands on a hand piece, the faster you will develop your hand skills and
perfect your technique. The college also has all of its dental specialties in one building. This allowed me to get a better understanding of what each specialty does, so I can make an informed decision on whether or not I want to specialize in that field. The college definitely exposes us to many different aspects of dentistry.” Alston has been heavily involved in the college’s community outreach efforts. “Outreach is important because it exposes an underserved population to information and expertise about how to better take care of themselves,” she said. “By exposing them to this information, it allows them to become aware of what to do so they can change their habits. “ Alston has also been involved in the Hispanic Student Dental Association, the American Student Dental Association, the American Association of Women Dentists, and the Esthetics Dental Club. She has participated in Give Kids a Smile Day, Pre-Dental Day, the Arkansas Mission of Mercy, TAR WARS, and several health fairs. Alston’s goal is to have her patients smile with confidence. After graduation, she will start a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at UT Health San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas.

Fourth-Year Dental Student Says Being a Dentist Something to Smile About By Amber Carter
A visit to the orthodontist in Huntsville, Alabama, sparked Julian Brandt Smith’s desire to be a dentist. “I’ll never forget sitting in Dr. Charles Graham’s office, watching him move from patient to patient, a smile on his face every second,” Smith said. “I remember thinking, he looks like he genuinely loves what he does. When he sat down beside me, still smiling that same smile, I said to him, ‘I think I want to do what you do one day.’ He laughed, and said, ‘Well, when you get through organic chemistry in college, I want you to come back and see me.’ ” Nearly a decade later, Smith did just that. Smith, now a fourth-year dental student at UTHSC, grew up in Pulaski, Tennessee. His parents were educators. “My dad was the principal of my middle school, later becoming the director of schools, and my mother was a senior English teacher for 42 years,” Smith said. “Like many parents, they both wanted more for me than they ever had.” He attended Middle Tennessee State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. Next, he earned a master’s in biotechnology, and eventually was accepted to UTHSC. Smith has always had a heart for helping others. “I have been truly blessed with support and encouragement since I started this journey, which has resulted in a deep desire to give back,” he said. “Luckily for me, I have had the opportunities to do for others, all the while gaining experience in the field I love. All it took was for me to watch an orthodontist smile at work to change my life.” UTHSC was always the first choice, mainly because of its location and the in-state tuition, Smith said. “I also had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Covington while I was in my master’s program at MTSU. The fact that he had taken time out of his schedule to meet with me to discuss my future as a potential student meant a lot. After that, I knew UTHSC was the choice for me.”

UTHSC COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY | WINTER 2018
Smith has been a part of the summer research program at UTHSC, receiving awards for presentations, and has been selected twice to represent the college nationally. He is also a member of the American Student Dental Association, the UTHSC Esthetics Club, Xi Psi Phi dental fraternity, and the IMHOTEP Society. “I have been the D1 representative, vice president, and president of Xi Psi Phi,” Smith said. “Our fraternity has created annual fund-raising opportunities for the youth in Memphis through various dental school events, one being ZIP Idol, a competition between a faculty band and dental student musicians. On the grand scale of things, this is very little, but if we can help just one child in need, we have succeeded. It’s important for us as health care professionals to inspire the youth, especially here in the Memphis community, to aspire for more in life.” Smith is involved with the St. Jude Target House, where he helps serve dinner to families in need who are awaiting treatment, as well as with the Mid-South Mission of Mercy, which provides free dental services to the underserved in the Memphis community. He lends a hand back home in Pulaski during Free Dental Day. After graduation, Smith hopes to secure an orthodontic residency. “Obviously, it would feel like life had come full circle for me if I were to be accepted,” he said. “If I am not accepted, I will be happy being a general dentist here in Tennessee. I am in love with everything that comes with being a general dentist. From fillings, to root canals, to crowns, to dentures, there is no part of dentistry I don’t enjoy. I am going to wear that same smile as Dr. Charles Graham regardless.”

Military Induction Service Highlights COD Spring Commencement By Peggy Reisser
When the College of Dentistry graduated its 2018 class of dentists and dental hygienists in May, one of its most distinguished alums returned for a special ceremony to recognize those joining the military services. Colonel Tom Goksel, commander of the Dental Activity (DENTAC) of the United States Army’s 101st Airborne Division (The Screaming Eagles) based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and an alumnus of the College of Dentistry, was on hand to induct five members of the graduating class into their branches of service. A College of Dentistry faculty member with military experience stood beside each to symbolize passing the torch of service to the country. Dr. Goksel is a 1992 graduate of the College of Dentistry. He went on to receive an MD degree and is a boardcertified oral and maxillofacial surgeon and board-certified cosmetic surgeon. The recipient of many service honors, including the Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone during Operation Iraqi Freedom, he is authorized by the Department of Defense to administer the Military Uniformed Services Oath of Office to all branches of service. J. Stansill Covington, DDS, MS, FRSM (London), theninterim dean, invited Dr. Goksel to preside at the induction service, after an earlier visit with the colonel. Dr. Covington

Right of Passage The annual White Coat Ceremony took place July 13 at The Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in Memphis. Approximately 95 third-year dental students received their white coats, a box of business cards, and a college pin, signifying their transition to student doctors in the College of Dentistry clinic. The College of Dentistry was proud to host keynote speaker alumna Terryl Propper, DDS, then-senior partner at Endodontic Associates in Nashville, past president of the Nashville Dental Society and the American Association of Endodontists, and incoming president of the Tennessee Dental Association.
Expanding Statewide Reach
COD Students Receive Hinman Scholarships Students John Kim, left, and Brian Poore, right, each received a $4,000 scholarship from the Hinman Dental Society at the most recent 106th annual Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting in Atlanta. A third-year student, Kim is an alumnus of Middle Tennessee State University. Former work as a dental technician exposed Kim to the profession of dentistry. This led him to pursue an advanced degree with a specific interest in prosthodontics and implant surgery. Poore, also thirdyear dental student, is an alumnus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He knew from a young age he wanted to be a dentist, and volunteered in a dental clinic at the Volunteer Ministry Center in Knoxville, learning about the profession and the important role dentists have in community service. His interest is in oral and maxillofacial surgery. “In the future, I plan on finding an outlet to serve in the community, where I practice,” Poore said. The Hinman Society has promoted dental education and the profession since 1912.

UTHSC COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY | WINTER 2018
The College of Dentistry in partnership with Saint Thomas Health and the Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center launched a dental residency program in Nashville in August. The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program offers training opportunities for dental residents, as well as improved access to dental care for the underserved in the city. “We want the program to be a model for AEGD programs in the country and to be a competitive program for people to get into,” Dean James Ragain said. UTHSC and Saint Thomas Health already partner in medical residencies in Nashville. This is the first dental residency through this graduate education partnership. The AEGD program is based in the dental clinic at the Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center, which has served the Nashville community for 50 years. Initially, it will have four residents, and later increase to 10.
SGAEC Honors Faculty, Students In April, the Student Government Association Executive Council (SGAEC) showed its appreciation to faculty and staff, and also welcomed 146 students, including many from the College of Dentistry, into the prestigious Imhotep Society. Excellence in Teaching Awards were presented to faculty for outstanding communication of subjects, responsiveness to students inside and outside of classrooms, and genuine concern for students’ learning. Recipients from the College of Dentistry were Jegdish Babu, PhD, professor of Bioscience Research, and Dean James Ragain, for his efforts while serving as associate professor of Restorative Dentistry.

Share the Ride The Explore Bike Share program rolled onto the UTHSC campus in May as part of the city’s new bike rental program. Supporters and teams from various organizations, including approximately 10 riders from UTHSC and partner entities, joined the kick-off ride. UTHSC is a “founding funder” for Explore Bike Share, helping to provide funding for the purchase of equipment to set up the program, which has approximately 600 cruisers that can be rented on demand at any of 60 stations in downtown Memphis and the surrounding area. UTHSC has two docking stations for bikes — one in front of the Madison Plaza Building with docks for 11 bikes, and one in front of the Student-Alumni Center with docks for 15 bikes.
Smoke-Free Campus On January 1, 2018, UTHSC joined the more than 1,757 campuses across the country in becoming smoke free. The use of, advertising, sale, or free sampling of smoking products on university property, facilities, grounds, and controlled venues is prohibited. The policy spans the 55-acre Memphis campus, including sidewalks and parking lots adjacent to university buildings. “We believe this decision supports our other efforts to have a healthy environment for our students, faculty, and staff,” said Ken Brown, executive vice chancellor and chief operations officer at UTHSC.
Building Health State-of-the-Art Facility The University of Tennessee Health Science Center opened a new chapter in health care education in Tennessee and beyond on May 11, when the ribbon was cut on its new $39.7 million Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Simulation (CHIPS). The 45,000-square-foot, world-class building at 26 South Dunlap is dedicated to education and professional development of enhanced clinical skills using standardized patients (actors trained to portray patients), high-fidelity patient simulators (manikins costing from $15,000 to $220,000), and virtual reality technology. The building is the only one of its kind in Tennessee and one of only a handful in the country built for and totally dedicated to simulation training. The center will allow students from the six colleges at UTHSC — Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Health Professions, Nursing, Medicine, and Pharmacy — to train together in simulation settings to develop their skills in delivering team-based health care, which is the proven model for the highest-quality care today.

The Plough Center for Sterile Drug Delivery Solutions at UTHSC won a 2918 Building Memphis Award from the Memphis Business Journal. The prestigious awards recognize the best new developments in Memphis over the past year. The university has transformed a former warehouse on the edge of campus into a state-of-the art facility for the sterile manufacture of pharmaceuticals. The $20 million Plough Center is the only pharmaceutical facility of its kind in Tennessee and one of the few university-owned, contractmanufacturing facilities in the United States. It will produce small-batch drugs in injectable and freeze-dried forms for preclinical, Phase 1, and Phase 2 human clinical trials; orphan drugs to treat specific and rare diseases; and innovative drug delivery systems to meet various unmet clinical needs.
Endowed Scholarship to Help StudentAthletes Who Choose Dental Career By Amber Carter
College of Dentistry alumnus Rush Abbott Peace, DDS, (’58) and his wife Julia, have created the Dr. Rush Abbott and Julia Robertson Peace Endowment Scholarship, which will award its first scholarship in the spring of 2020. Awards will be made annually to incoming or enrolled students in the College of Dentistry, with first preference given to a former University of Tennessee, Knoxville, student-athlete, who has chosen to pursue a career in dentistry. A dedicated prosthetic and pediatric dentist, Dr. Peace practiced privately for over 50 years before retiring in 2016. His wife, a native of Orlando, Florida, and graduate of Mercer University, served as the administrator at his practice. The Peaces are supporters of the University of Tennessee and its programs, making visits to Knoxville every year. They have also included UTHSC in their estate plans, making them members of the Hershel P. Wall, MD, Legacy Society.
During his senior year of dental school, Dr. Peace broke his hand playing semi-pro baseball and could not participate in clinicals. Instead, he was assigned graduate work in the pedodontics and prosthodontics departments. “It was there that I obtained my enthusiasm and motivation for my future career,” he said. Dr. Peace became a pioneer in the Southeast and is known for practicing dentistry in hospital operating rooms, completing more than 11,000 procedures. He is also a celebrated regional and national lecturer. Some of his involvement includes serving as president of the Southeastern Academy of Prosthodontics, and being a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry. Dr. Peace holds membership in the International College, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and many other organizations.
“We definitely believe in giving back,” Dr. Peace said. “A huge inspiration in that was Julia’s mother. She grew up during the depression and the family was able to send only one sibling of four to school. While now well read, she couldn’t go to college. Therefore, she always encouraged her children to assist the less fortunate with their higher education.” Before dental school, Dr. Peace, who comes from a family of health care professionals, was a standout on the University of Mississippi baseball team. Athletics was a passion, but education always remained his top priority. He decided to go into health care to honor his grandfather and namesake, who once was president of the American Dental Association. “I had to make a hard decision between playing baseball another year, going to dental or medical school, or going with a chance to play in the Detroit Tigers system,” Dr. Peace said. “I decided to go to dental school in my grandfather’s honor. I feel that the excellent preparation obtained by attending the UTHSC College of Dentistry is responsible for the many successes I have achieved.”
Dr. Rush Abbott Peace and his wife, Julia Robertson Peace, have established an endowed scholarship that will help student athletes purse a career in dentistry.

Many Enjoy the College of Dentistry from Both Sides of the Classroom By Amber Carter
Of 159 faculty members in the College of Dentistry, roughly four dozen are alumni, including Dean James Ragain, (COD ’84).
Marjorie A. Woods, DDS, FACD (COD ’84)
Professor and Director, Division of Oral Diagnosis Dr. Woods is also a member of that group. “I am a lifelong Memphian, except for a stint in Gainesville, Florida, to complete a residency in geriatric dentistry,” she said. “I finished my Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene here in 1978, so I knew the buildings, all about the program, and the challenges I’d face.” Dr. Woods received her dental degree in 1984 from UTHSC. She was following in the footsteps of her father, James T. Andrews, DDS, FACD, FICD, an alumnus (COD ’52), who came back to UTHSC as an educator. He served as the chair of the Department of Operative Dentistry for 30 years. “My father was my role model,” she said. “He always enjoyed the students and loved teaching.” Dr. Woods joined the faculty after learning that her mentor had an opening that fit her experience. “Dean William Slagle wanted someone with training in geriatric dentistry on the faculty,” she said. “It was a hot topic in dentistry, due to the aging World War II veterans and future aging baby boomers. Dr. James Turner, an oral pathologist, and my mentor as well as a good friend, had an opening in his department in the Division of Oral Diagnosis.” “Working at the College of Dentistry is fun,” Dr. Woods said. “The smart, young student doctors keep me on my toes. Since joining the faculty, I’ve learned something new every day. It could be about computers, a medication, a systemic disease, an oral condition, or what’s new in pop culture. Like my father, I can’t imagine working anywhere else.”

Two other former students, who are now faculty members, shared insights from both sides of the classroom.
J. Stansill Covington III, DDS, MS, FRSM (London) (COD ’81) Associate Dean of Faculty and Student Affairs
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE UTHSC FOR YOUR EDUCATION? As a native Tennessean, the College of Dentistry offered an extremely high-quality education that was of good value. I was also a part of the first four-year class. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO JOIN THE FACULTY? I was motivated by the students. It is a luxury to be surrounded by bright, clever minds, all day, every day. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FROM THIS EXPERIENCE? My biggest takeaway then and even now is the strong friendships that are formed between classmates. It happened to me, and I have witnessed it happen to all of the dental school classes after me.
Rebecca Mayall, DDS (COD 2011)
Assistant Professor, Department of Prosthodontics WHY DID YOU CHOOSE UTHSC FOR YOUR EDUCATION? It is the oldest dental school in the South and has a great clinical reputation. Also, the location was ideal because both my and my husband’s families are nearby. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO JOIN THE FACULTY? I was in private practice for three years before I made the transition into academia. I never really found a practice that was a good fit for me, and I’ve always enjoyed teaching. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FROM THIS EXPERIENCE? My biggest takeaway has been getting to interact with the students and helping them learn, while continuing to learn myself.

The 2019 William F. Slagle Dental Meeting is scheduled for March 1-3 at The Guest House at Graceland in Memphis. In addition to continuing education, the meeting includes a ’70s-themed welcome party, the annual alumni awards luncheon, the scholarship banquet, and various reunion activities. New this year, will be hands-on courses for the entire dental team — dentists, hygienists, and assistants. The hands-on courses are limited in enrollment to afford participants the maximum opportunity to practice their skills. The courses will use state-of-the-art learning techniques to ensure participants go beyond understanding principles to being able to implement the concepts and skills in their practices. The mission of the annual event is to advance the delivery of quality dental care by providing the dental team with a premier educational opportunity. In accordance with this mission, the William F. Slagle Dental Meeting is committed to offering extensive continuing education courses, commercial exhibits, and additional educational programs advancing the growth and development of the dental profession. The William F. Slagle Dental Meeting is sponsored by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry and the College of Dentistry Alumni Association. All profits from the meeting support dental education programs at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry. Make plans to join fellow alumni in Memphis for this important event. To register, go to slagledentalmeeting.com. Thank you for your support! Tennessee Dental Association Foundation Supports UTHSC Student Researchers By Jackie Denton
The Tennessee Dental Association Foundation (TDAF) continued its history of support for the UTHSC College of Dentistry by presenting a $12,000 check to the college during a recent luncheon held in Franklin, Tennessee. Robert Hopper, DDS, president of TDAF, and board member Bill Powell, DDS, MS, presented the check to J. Stansill Covington III, DDS, MS, FRSM (London), associate dean of Faculty and Student Affairs for the College of Dentistry; and Tony Burns, director of development for the college. The funds will be used to support student research and enrich the academic experience of the students by providing stipends to use toward research projects. In an effort to foster interest in dental research, the college hosts two student research events annually. Student Research Day is a platform for students to

present their research to faculty, staff, and their peers. The Hinman Student Research Symposium, held at The Peabody in the fall, provides a national audience for student researchers to showcase research projects and data through posters and oral presentations. Student participants who benefit from the TDAF funding are invited to participate in both events, and are also asked to submit a research abstract and poster to the American Association for Dental Research. “The Tennessee Dental Association Foundation has been continually generous sharing their funds with the UTHSC College of Dentistry,” Dr. Covington said. “It is much appreciated, as it allows promising projects to gather enough data to determine if a larger study is warranted. We are most grateful that they choose to share their resources with our college.”

Golden Graduate Homecoming 2018 Alumni from all six colleges at UTHSC, including 32 from the College of Dentistry, traveled to Memphis to attend the 2018 Golden Graduate Homecoming, held October 10-12. This milestone celebration included dinner at The Rendezvous, open houses at the various colleges, a tour of the new Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Simulation (CHIPS) on campus, as well as the Golden Graduate Ceremony and Dinner at the historic Peabody Hotel. The 2019 celebration, which honors the class of 1969 and all prior years, is set for October 16-18. See you there!
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Terryl A. Propper, DDS, MS, ADA, AAE, TDA, NDS, ICD, ACD, Pierre Fauchard Academy (COD ’82)
HOMETOWN: New Orleans WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW? Nashville, Tennessee HOBBIES: My hobby is cooking. I won the Tennessee Beef Cook-Off twice, and was a semifinalist, regional winner, and national finalist in other competitions. My patients know when they get a root canal from Dr. Propper, they also get a recipe! CURRENT POSITION: I retired from clinical practice in August 2018. I will serve as president of the Tennessee Dental Association, beginning in June 2019. I plan to open Prop & Associates, a consulting firm with expertise in the changing climate in health care and focused on marketing and management. WHY DID YOU SELECT THE COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY AT UTHSC? Our family was ruled by my father’s schedule as a busy OB-GYN in Kingsport, Tennessee. We rarely were able to have dinner together, due to his calling to deliver babies. This led me to the decision to go to dental school. I applied to several dental schools, and I chose to attend the College of Dentistry because of its proximity to home and because of its reputation of clinical excellence. HOW ARE YOU CURRENTLY ENGAGED WITH UTHSC? I am one of the representatives from Middle Tennessee on the Alumni Board of Directors. WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE UTHSC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION? My involvement with UTHSC has been recent. As I matured in my experiences and practice, I came to the realization that I would not have achieved what my life has bestowed upon me without my DDS. I have the UTHSC College of Dentistry to thank for my ability to earn a great living, to be able to give charitably, and to sustain a quality of life that many would envy. I have now become a champion for the College of Dentistry. My first major gift was when the College of Dentistry established a graduate department in endodontics. My donation came

in the form of a sponsored operatory in the endodontic graduate department. For my second major gift, I was moved to action by a proposal for UTHSC to build a Special Needs Clinic. My dear friends, Ruth Bailey, DDS, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Dr. Jeannie Beauchamp, DDS, Clarksville, Tennessee, were asked to co-chair a fund-raiser for this purpose. The three of us provided the seed money for the campaign that raised over $750,000 for this clinic. We continue to raise funds for this clinic and invite you to contribute. Female graduates of the College of Dentistry have left a legacy of generosity through our efforts. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO OTHER ALUMNI ABOUT GETTING INVOLVED? It took me many years to appreciate what my time at UTHSC has meant to me. My father’s blood ran orange. He was an avid supporter of the College of Medicine, serving on the admissions committee and the alumni board. I will always remember Dad on game day … his orange Bronco, a size 52 orange blazer, and an orange cigar. He loved UT, because his education made him into the man he became ... intelligent, philanthropic, and appreciative of his station in life. I want my classmates and colleagues to think about where we would be without our UTHSC education. I am a happier person to know that I am having an impact on the current state of education at UTHSC. I want my alma mater to look to me for leadership to help them achieve their goals. We should all strive to help the College of Dentistry reach higher goals through our financial support. WHAT ARE SOME NOTABLE MEMORIES FROM YOUR TIME AT UTHSC? I lived in a townhouse next to Prince Mongo (a well-known Memphis character and nightclub owner) on Eastmoreland Avenue in Midtown. One of many memories is when the early reality show, “Real People,” came to town to feature Mongo, and my roommate and I were interviewed for the show. I engaged the crew by cooking them lunch, and we were interviewed and appeared on NBC. The video is on YouTube — “A Visit with Prince Mongo.”
