UT ASDA hosted it’s first ever Pre-Dental Day on May 13, 2017 and it was a huge success! This was a great opportunity for undergraduates seeking admission into dental school a chance to come see our campus, get face to face time with the Admissions Committee, and have the freedom to ask all their great questions to current dental students. What is ASDA? The American Student Dental Association is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests, and welfare of dental students. It introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation, and advocacy. ASDA is the largest national organization solely dedicated to dental student concerns.

Tips to Surviving the First Two Years of Dental School Written by Hannah Farrar Greer ‘19

years of dental school can be daunting and feel impossible.

The first two Have no fear for you are not alone on this bumpy ride. If you take care of your physical and mental health, this journey can be rewarding and exciting. It is easy to get into a rut of negativity, but try to remind yourself daily of the good things in your life. You can do it! Take it one day at a time!

Time management and organization

We have all heard this lecture a million times, and it is true. Each student has to find his or her own definition of “organized.” To some, this may mean a color coded planner and a label maker in hand. To others, if you can open your locker without being pummeled to the ground by casts, articulators and endo files, then it is a successful day.

Find your rhythm that allows you to be prepared for classes and labs, and stick to what you know!

“Treat Yo Self”

The best advice a D4 student ever gave me was find the time and budget to reward yourself for meeting goals. After that huge pharmacology exam, get your nails done, splurge on dinner at a new restaurant, or finally buy that item in your Amazon shopping cart. We all need something to look forward to, and weeks of impending studying are not enough to stay motivated.

Rely on family and friends

Parents may be more important to you now than they were in your days as an infant. Over the course of my first two years, several phone calls were made to my mom celebrating successful endo practicals and mourning microbiology exam scores. Lean on partners and spouses to vent about unfair exam questions and unrealistic lab project deadlines. Call best friends to hear about life outside of dental school. You cannot survive these grueling four years without a support system. Find your cheerleaders and put them in your speed dial.

Take time to REST!

Sometimes you have to trust yourself and listen to what your body is saying. It is easy to study “just one more hour”, learn a few more pathology lesions, or keep polishing your dentures until your reflection gleams back at you.

However, when your eyelids feel like boulders, take a nap! Invest in a comfortable pillow and give your brain a hiatus.

Exercise and practice healthy eating

If you aren’t an active person, dental school is the best time to delve in physical fitness. If your crown prep takes a turn for the worst, use that pent up frustration on some cardio or a lifting routine. Find time to cook and grocery shop and bring your healthy meals to class. School rarely allows for extended lunch breaks, so packing your lunch allows spare time to set up for lab, review quiz material, chat with classmates, or occasionally catch up on an episode on Netflix. With a healthy diet and consistent exercise, your mind will be clear for that upcoming exam.

Dental school has tested me in ways unimaginable. I am no expert on advice, but I am confident that these tips will be helpful to alleviate stress. I am still actively practicing my advice each day. We’re all in this together!

EL SALVADOR Written by Katie Chambers ‘19 This summer, some of my classmates and I had the amazing opportunity to work with Global Health Organization in Santa Ana, El Salvador. When I first signed up for the trip, I was so excited for this new adventure considering I’ve never traveled outside of the United States.

Unbeknownst to me, the first foreign country I’d be visiting is the number one homicide capital in the world. I didn’t learn of this statistic until I had finally landed in the San Salvador airport and I was questioning why there were so many guards with rifles just casually walking the streets.

Luckily I was oblivious while signing up for the trip or else I probably wouldn’t have signed up, and I would’ve missed out on one of the best experiences of my life.

We partnered with a local church in Santa Ana called Iglesia Oasis de Gracia and never have I met such a kind, grateful group of people. Also, never have I been more hugged and kissed on the cheek. The church members were so excited that we were there to help their people and country that they care for so deeply. During the week, our GHO team visited two different communities. The first was in Atiquizaya which is an urban city right outside of Santa Ana. In those two days we were able to see thousands through dental, medical, pharmacy, and optometry. The second site we visited in the week was in Texistepeque which is a rural communist community on the outskirts of town. Texistepeque is so rural that we actually weren’t allowed to flush the toilets in order to conserve the community’s water from the local well. They were two very different sites, but they had one thing in common. Both communities had people who were in desperate need of healing but no means to do so. Even though we worked tirelessly from morning to night in the El Salvador heat, we still were able to have fun. Between seeing a mariachi band perform on the local streets, climbing up to the crater of a volcano, and walking the shore of a world-renowned beach for surfing we definitely got our fill of authentic El Salvador fun. All in all, my trip to El Salvador is an experience I will never forget and I can’t wait until I get to go back.

Brushing Beyond Borders ECUADOR Written by Morgan Rebeck ‘19

This summer, I traveled to Tabacundo, Ecuador with a dental mission team from the Baptist College Ministry (BCM). Not only was this my first mission trip but it was also my first time traveling internationally! I am not sure what aspect of this adventure I was more excited for – getting the first stamp in my brand new passport, providing dental care and education, or experiencing a whole new world! Traveling to a new country was different and exciting; traveling to a new country to practice dentistry was something different altogether! The first hurdle that myself and members of our mission trip team had to overcome was the language barrier. Luckily, we had access to excellent translators who went above and beyond to make sure that the exchange of information between our dental team and the patients went smoothly! Over the course of the week, our dental team was able to provide treatment and dental education to approximately 400 patients. We saw patients of all ages and even set up a remote clinic in an elementary school in Otavalo, Ecuador! On our days off from seeing patients, we got to explore and let me tell you – Ecuador is a beautiful country! We zip-lined through the Amazon rainforest, visited Ecuador’s equator monument at Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, hiked through the mountains, rode alpaca to waterfalls, hung out with thousands of butterflies at Mariposas de Mindo – Butterfly Garden, shopped in Ecuadorian markets, ate amazing food, and tasted delicious chocolate at El Quetzal de Mindo! As you can see, we not only worked hard providing dental care but also had a ton of fun in the process!

What is ASDA Working on Today?

Student Debt The average indebted dental school senior graduates with $255,567 of debt. More than 380 dental students advocated for the Student Loan Refinancing Act and Post Grad Act at ASDA’s 2016 National Dental Student Lobby Day. Both bills aim to reduce the burden of student debt.

After the fun had on campus, the festivities were taken to a Memphis Redbird’s game that ended in fireworks. This gave everyone a chance to wind down, build relationships, and answer any other questions.

When Dr. Covington was asked how he felt the day went, he said,

“I am so proud of these students who took it upon themselves to organize this entire day and evening. The goal was to have a low-key open house open to all. Our guests were free to ask anyone anything without feeling any pressure that they were on display. It was amazingly successful.”

With a great response from the attendees, it indicated that there definitely needs to be another Pre-Dental Day in 2018! If you missed out this year, stay tuned for next year’s predental day and help encourage more Pre-Dents in their future dental endeavors.

RECAP: Pre-dental Day

The morning consisted of a great talk by Dr. Covington on admission requirements and then the Pre-Dents headed up to our pre-clinical labs to have some fun. Three stations were run by dental students coaching them on waxing, tooth preparation, and restorations with composite. This was a great time for them to talk with other Pre-Dents and ask dental students questions about admissions, academics, clinic, and life as a dental student. They were then toured around the Dunn Dental Clinics and fed a Memphis staple, Central BBQ, for lunch. Over lunch, our ASDA Membership Chair, Jacob Sparks, gave a presentation promoting ASDA, even in their PreDental Societies. After lunch, the Pre-Dents had the chance to split into groups and choose whether they’d like advice on the DAT or get interview/personal statement tips. As the day on campus came to a close, we captured an awesome group photo and were told by many of the Pre-Dents what a great day they had! One Pre-Dent said she been to other schools’ Pre-Dental Days and they didn’t get to prep a tooth or have as much fun.

Memphis in May: BBQ Fest Written by Jack Kang ‘19

Are you ready to step into the world of BBQ? Once you’re in, your nose will be stuffed with the delicious smokin’ smells of BBQ! Then your stomachs will probably be stuffed with so much food until you can’t make it out of your chair. Competitors from across the nation attend the contest every year to fight for the title of world’s best BBQ, and countless guests come to taste their masterpieces.

The annual Memphis in May BBQ Festival and Contest is held in Tom Lee Park, along the Riverwalk of the Mississippi river. Hundreds of vendors participate in this festival and the turnout has always been phenomenal.

This May, some classmates and I had the privilege to try one of our very own professor’s appetizing BBQ. Dr. Mike McBride, professor and Dean of Academic Affairs, participated in this year’s festival. Upon arriving at his booth, he quickly fixed us a nice plate of grilled perfections. On our plates were BBQ pork, smoked sausage, and smoked chicken wings. When I took my first bite, I was bedazzled. In addition to being tender and succulent, the pulled pork sandwich was packed with flavor. Not to mention, the BBQ sauce was simply amazing. The sausage was smoked until it was sizzling and the chicken wings were seasoned just right to where you can taste every single spice.

BBQ fest will be happening again in May 2018 and we encourage everyone to come out and have some fun next year! And here’s something that you can look forward to… perhaps Dr. McBride will be there again to treat you for some BBQ!

THE BITEWING

INGREDIENTS:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1 lb. ground chicken breast

2 cups grates zucchini (leave peel on)

2-3 green onions, sliced

3-4 Tbsp cilantro

1 clove of garlic

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp of pepper

3/4 tsp cumin (optional but adds some spice!)

Olive/Coconut/Avocado oil

1. Grate zucchini and toss with chicken, green onions, cilantro, garlic, salt, pepper & cumin.

Mixture will be quite wet.

2. Drizzle a bit of oil onto a baking sheet. Scoop meatballs onto greased pan & drizzle with additional oil.

3. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until thoroughly cooked. You can place under the broiler for an addition 2-3 minutes or until browned on top.

Serve with guacamole, Greek yogurt, sour cream or your favorite dip!

Falling for Memphis Written by Mary Kate Walsh ‘20 Fall is one of the best times of the year, especially in Memphis. The weather is finally not sweltering, football starts again, and the city hosts a wide array of events for everyone to enjoy. Festivals, races, fun food places, and much more are to be found now that fall has arrived. Join a group run with Breakaway Running

With only four months left in 2017, there is still plenty of time to complete that New Year’s Resolution to start exercising/get in shape! One way to do that in Memphis is to run with the Breakaway Running Groups. These are weekly free runs held all over the city. All running types are welcome, whether you are a runner or someone who runs (there is a difference), a good time is to be had by all. They cover different terrains, different personalities, and different distances, so there is a run for everyone!

Most runs are 3-5 miles, but longer mileage runs are held on the weekend.

Levitt Shell concert series After a brief hiatus, the concerts at the shell have started again. They will run every Thursday-Sunday in September and October. So bring a blanket, food, and great friends to enjoy this event. The cooler weather will make hanging out in Overton Park incredible, but don’t forget the bug spray!

Shows start at 7:30, but make sure to get there around 7 to get a good spot. Also, I would Uber or Lyft or find someone who has a house that is close so that you can walk because parking in Overton is always a unique challenge.

There will be food competitions, music, food trucks, and a Bloody Mary contest sponsored by Old Dominic. This event is sponsored by the Medical District Collaborative. Also, proceeds will benefit the Urban Biking Ministry! So go out and brunch for a good cause!

cooper young beer festival Date: October 14th Cost: $45

Memphis Tiger Football is a quintessential Memphis event for people to experience. Not too long ago they were probably one of the worst teams in the country, but that changed when Fuente and Lynch turned this basketball school into one that was excited about football again. The games are always fun and the redesigned Tiger Lane makes tailgating a great experience. Tickets are always reasonably priced, people are there to for a good time, and you can always go out in Midtown after the game. This season will probably be an interesting one for the Tigers, but if you can I would definitely suggest attending a game!

Memphis Beer festivals are always a fun time, and the Copper Young Beer Festival is no exception. This festival is hosted in the historically hip neighborhood of Cooper Young (yes, that is their official title) and is slightly smaller than the other festivals that are hosted in the city. The good news is that the small size equates to fewer lines at the stations, but does mean that it tends to sell out fast. Also, in true Midtown Memphis local love fashion, all breweries that are invited to the festival are within a day’s drive of Memphis, so that you can have easy access to your new favorite beer. https://openclipart.org/tags/beer

Pink palace crafts fair

If you know kids, have kids, or are a kid at heart, this is a fun fall festival to attend. It’s held in East Memphis in Audubon Park every year. You can see many different artisan demonstrations from candle making to metalsmithing.

The fair food and booths are always fun to look around, too.

This festival raises money for ALIVE rescue Memphis, while you get to sample the finest grilled cheese this city has to offer. There are five categories, most ridiculous, cheesiest, best tomato soup, grand champ, and fan favorite, that the teams are competing to win.

Each table will have a donation box and donating ANY amount will let you sample what that team is creating! This part is important because the team with the highest donation amount wins Fan Favorite.

Name one thing that is better than a grilled cheese festival in November that raises money for animals in need, I’ll wait.

hot tamale trail of the Mississippi delta Hot tamales are one of my mom’s favorite foods. My great grandmother and her use to make them

together growing up, which is the inspiration for this pick on my Falling for Memphis list. A quick trip on the Hot Tamale Trail in the Mississippi/Arkansas Delta is a great way to get out of Memphis for the day and try a new place. There is no official record of how Mississippi became one of the best places to get tamales in the US, but they have been part of the culture for a long time. So if weekend food adventures are you forte I suggest heading to Ervin’s Hot Tamales, Pasquale’s Hot Tamales, or if you are up for a drive, Greenville, MS is the place to be on this very delicious trail.

Welcome to the most wonderful time of the year, folks, the Memphis Grizzlies Basketball season.

Memphis is a basketball town by default, and we love our Grizzlies. So I highly suggest buying some cheap (or more expensive) tickets, getting a Ghost River Grindhouse, grabbing a growl towel, asking for some assistance from the now departed Grindfather Tony Allen that Parsons is healthy enough to play, and get yourself an authentic Grindhouse experience. This season should be fun with a lot of new acquisitions and personalities making their debut. Bonus points, if you get to see the Grizz Grannies and Grandpas perform.
