Jason Powles master of ceremonies Jason Powles anchors NEWSChannel 2 at Daybreak and Sunrise. Until November 2012, he was the long-time Sports Director at NEWSChannel 2. This will be Jason’s seventh straight year serving as the master of ceremonies for the Pioneer Hall of Fame and Senior Student-Athlete Recognition. Jason has been with NEWSChannel 2 since July 1996. During his tenure, Jason has covered the NCAA Tournament, the Orange Bowl, several pro football camps, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame ceremonies. He has also hosted a continuing series in conjunction with the Hall of Fame called “Heroes of the Game”. However, his local coverage is what has made him an invaluable asset to the NEWSChannel 2 team. He has hosted the High School Football Preview Show and created the NEWSChannel 2 High School Football All-Star Team as well as the High School Boys and Girls Basketball All-Star Teams. His work hosting race coverage of the Boilermaker Road Race helped earn WKTV an Associated Press Broadcast Award. Jason is also an adjuct lecturer of journalism at Utica College.

Jason is from Rotterdam, New York, and grew up loving television. His mother said his first words included “Cronkite!” The interest in the field led him to study public communications at the College of Saint Rose, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in May 1992. He’s married to his lovely wife Anne and has two wonderful daughters, Rachael and Jillian.

Dave Owen ‘73 men’s basketball

& baseball

Dave Owen ’73 was the undisputed leader of the Utica College athletic program from 1969-1973. His achievements on the hardwood and the diamond have stood the test of time and are certainly worthy of his induction into the Pioneer Hall of Fame. Owen stormed on the scene in his freshman campaign and averaged 23.9 points and 13.1 rebounds per game under the guidance of men’s basketball Head Coach Joseph Rosado. To this day, 45 years later, his average of 13.1 rebounds per game in the 1969-70 season still stands as the highest single season rebounding average in program-history. His 23.9 points per game ranks second on the College’s all-time single season list, behind fellow Pioneer Hall of Famer David Ancrum ’80. The phenomenal freshman campaign set the stage for one of the most prolific basketball careers in the history of the UC men’s basketball program. Owens currently ranks fourth on the College’s all-time scoring list with 1,406 career points and second on the all-time list with 832 career rebounds. He shot 53% from the floor (598-for-1129) in 80 games played. His career average of 17.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per game are both third on the College’s all-time list. His 598 career field goals ranks second all-time. He was a four year letterman in both basketball and baseball and he was twice named the College’s Athlete of the Year. He was a three year team captain in basketball and baseball. Over the course of his career he received several honors including an ECAC Scholarship, he was an All-New York State College Division All-Star, he was a four-time team most valuable player in basketball and baseball, he was named a ‘Who’s Who in College Athletics’ in 1973 and he was also a First Team AllTournament selection at the Ft. Eustis, Va. Tournament in basketball. Among his basketball accolades, he was also a star on the baseball diamond, breaking records for hits and RBIs during the course of his career. Dave graduated from Utica College with a degree in social studies and went on to receive his master’s degree in history as a graduate assistant basketball coach at Iowa State University. He then spent time as an assistant basketball coach at Central Methodist College and Central Missouri State University. He went on to teach and coach at Grain Valley High School and Southwest High School in Missouri. In 2010 he retired from Kansas City East High School after 30 years of coaching and teaching history. I nductees

Originally from Waverly, NY he attended Waverly Central High School where he played football, basketball and baseball. During his time on the hardwood at Waverly he set the school-record with 32 rebounds in a single game.

Kim Adriance ‘81 women’s basketball Nearly 35 years removed from her playing days on the hard wood at Utica College, Kim Adriance ’81 remains as the women’s basketball program’s all-time leader in scoring and rebounding average per game. The former co-captain and team most valuable player averaged 20.0 points and 12.4 rebounds per game under the guidance of former Head Coach and fellow Pioneer Hall of Famer Joan Kay. She scored 821 points on 338 career field goals and she also grabbed 507 rebounds (126 offensive, 381 defensive). She added 145 free throws made for the Pioneers. Adriance transferred to Utica College after two years at Columbia-Greene Community College where she was a three-sport star in basketball, softball and volleyball. She averaged 25.0 points and 17.0 rebounds per game on the basketball court at Columbia-Greene. For her efforts she was inducted into the Twins’ Hall of Fame back in 2008. She also guided the Twins to two consecutive Northeastern Athletic Conference Championships. Adriance made several stints in the Empire State Games and was a member of an all-star team which won the Ted Early Tournament championship in Hamilton, Ontario. She graduated from Utica College in 1981 with a degree in Sociology and went on to sign a semi-professional contract with the Maracaibo Petroleras of the Venezuelan women’s basketball league, where she spent two seasons. Her basketball career began at Taconic Hills High School in Clavereck. Adriance is originally from Hollowville, NY which is a small town about 50 miles southeast of Albany.

Following her basketball career she entered the coaching ranks and spent time as a coach at both Taconic Hills High School and Columbia-Greene Community College. Adriance recently retired after spending 29 years with the New York State Police. She obtained her Master’s degree in Public Administration from Marist College in 2001 and graduated from the 252nd session of the FBI National Academy in 2013.

Charles A. Gaetano H’04 benefactor Father, husband, businessman, fisherman, veteran … Charles A. Gaetano could go by a lot of names. But for a hard-working and straightforward man like Gaetano, Mr. G is the name that those close to him affectionately use. Gaetano, a lifetime resident of Utica and Proctor High School graduate, served in the Navy during World War II as a Navy Seabee. In 1946 he married Cornelia (Connie) Nelson and the two started their family of six: William, Brian, Charles, Mary, Colleen, and Greg. By the mid-1950’s, Gaetano was a successful and highly-regarded masonry contractor operating a small crew in Utica. Connie continued to serve as his right hand as the scope of his projects significantly broadened and the staff was expanded to accommodate a growing need for quality building and contracting services. As a result, in 1970 the Charles A. Gaetano Construction Corporation was soon established. Today, Charles A. Gaetano Construction Corporation (Gaetano Construction) is a second-generation, full-service general contracting and design-build corporation. Specializing in concrete, masonry, and carpentry work, Gaetano Construction has completed projects for clients in the commercial, industrial, healthcare and multiresidential housing markets, as well as government agencies. Current annual sales exceed $50 million. An Emeritus member of the former Utica College Foundation Board, Gaetano has received numerous honors from Utica College, including the naming of its multipurpose stadium in 2002 and an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2004. At Homecoming 2007, Charlie was named an Honorary Alumnus by the National Alumni Council. In the Fall of 2012, Utica College announced the naming of Connie Gaetano Plaza at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. He started the Charles A. Gaetano Construction Management Scholarship at UC in 1995. He has personally made gifts toward the Gaetano Scholarship, the Annual Fund, and several other scholarships. In 1998, he donated 110 acres of land with waterfront at White Lake to UC.

I nductees

Gaetano has also remained committed to his community, including negotiating with General Electric to donate the Kent Street building to the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI). Gaetano has been involved with the CABVI for more than 40 years, serving five of those years as President, and is a Director Emeritus.
