Dr. B. Hudson Berrey has made a remarkable career spanning military service, medical education, and orthopaedic oncology. Born in Texas, he graduated from West Point with a degree in engineering and was commissioned as a Field Artillery officer. He served with the Second Armored Division at Fort Hood before entering medical school in 1973. A graduate of the UTMB School of Medicine in 1977, Dr. Berrey went on to complete his orthopaedic training at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI, in 1981.
His military assignments included serving as Chief, Orthopaedic Service at Gorgas Army Hospital in Panama, where he also acted as the orthopaedic consultant to the US SOUTHCOM surgeon. Dr. Berrey further specialized in orthopaedic oncology under Dr. Henry Mankin at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. At Walter Reed Army Medical Center, he developed an orthopaedic oncology service and assumed leadership roles such as overseeing the amputee program and the Prosthetic and Orthotic Lab. He played a pivotal role in medical education, serving as Chair of Orthopaedics at Walter Reed, instituting a one-year research program for the orthopaedic residents. He was then selected as the Consultant to the Army Surgeon General for Orthopaedic surgery.
His military deployments included missions to the Philippines, Honduras, Guatemala, and serving as an orthopaedic advisor during the civil war in El Salvador. He also deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield/Storm, where he served as deputy commander of the 85th Evacuation Hospital. The hospital received the Distinguished Unit Citation and Dr. Berrey received the Bronze Star award for the efforts of his hospital throughout the conflict.
Upon retiring from active duty, Dr. Berrey joined the faculty of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School where he established the first orthopaedic oncology program. He was then recruited to be Professor and Chair at the University of Florida Orthopaedic Department and contributed significantly to the growth of the orthopaedic residency program at the University of Florida. In addition, he instituted a humanitarian mission rotation to Haiti, exposing residents to the problems of medical care, especially musculoskeletal conditions, in the developing world.
In 2008, he was recalled to Army active duty and deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dr. Berrey retired from the University of Florida in 2016 and subsequently initiated his third orthopaedic oncology program at Baptist MD Anderson in Jacksonville. He officially retired from active practice in 2020.
Even in retirement, Dr. Berrey remains active in professional societies, particularly the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, where he serves as a senior statesman. He continues to share his expertise by teaching combat orthopaedic surgery principles and techniques to surgeons in Ukraine.
Throughout his career, Dr. Berrey’s dedication to family, patients, students, and residents has been evident, earning him numerous awards and honors for his contributions to both the military and civilian medical communities.
Additionally, he remains engaged in his community and sings in the St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral choir and has sung with that choir in Westminster Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral in England. He pursues his passion for SCUBA diving with his loving wife of 49-years, Rolly. They have two daughters, Alison and Jillian and four wonderful grandchildren. He and his wife plan to move back to Texas in the near future.
Dr. Richard Helmer is a fifth-generation Texan with a BA in Zoology from the University of Texas, where he graduated in 1967. During his time at UT, he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and was elected to the Student Assembly and the Silver Spurs Service Organization. He continued his education at UTMB, where he obtained his degree in Medicine in 1971 and was a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa.
His postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at UTMB was under the guidance of Dr. William P. Deiss, Jr. During his final year of residency, he served as a junior Fellow on the Medical Oncology Service. In 1974, he was called to active duty as a General Internist at the US Army Hospital in Okinawa, Japan, and later transferred to Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) as the Assistant Chief of the General Medicine Service in 1975.
At BAMC, Major Helmer held academic positions as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing and as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Medicine at UT Health Science Center, San Antonio. Along with Major Mackey Watkins (UTMB 1972), he served as the In-Patient Attending Physician for the General Medicine teaching service.
In 1977, he returned to UTMB for his Hematology-Medical Oncology Fellowship under Dr. Frank H. Gardner. Dr. Helmer is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine (Hematology and Internal Medicine) and has authored or co-authored numerous papers in national and international medical publications.
In 1979, he returned to Austin and joined private practice with the Capital Medical Clinic. The CMC Hematology-Medical Oncology service later merged with Central Texas Oncology, forming The Southwest Regional Cancer Center. He served on both the CMC and SWRCC Executive Committees and as Vice President of SWRCC. SWRCC later merged with Texas Oncology, and he practiced at the Midtown Office until his retirement in 2021, completing fifty years and one week after starting his UTMB Internship.
Dr. Helmer is involved in various professional organizations, including the Deiss Society, the Sealy Society, the Department of Internal Medicine Alumni Association, American College of Physicians, The American Society of Hematology, The American Society of Clinical Oncology, The European Hematology Association, the European Society of Medical Oncology, and the Christian Medical and Dental Society. He also served three terms as President of the Texas Society of Medical Oncology and was a member of the ASCO Clinical Practice Committee.
Post-retirement, Dr. Helmer and his wife, Angela Helmer, PhD, divide their time between their homes in Austin, the Texas hill country, and Ruidoso, New Mexico. Dr. Helmer has three children: Dr. Richard IV (UTMB 2000), a Cardiothoracic surgeon in Waco; Kevin B., a Senior Ethics and Compliance Coordinator for Texas A&M AgriLife in College Station; and Alissa Chrisman, a mother and Speech Pathologist in Austin. The Helmers also have five grandchildren: Rich, Elizabeth, Katherine, Grady, and Barrett. Dr. Helmer remains active in supporting UTMB, being a member of the UTMB Development Board and a founding member of the UTMB President’s Cabinet. He is also affiliated with various medical societies and serves on the John Sealy School of Medicine Alumni Association Board of Trustees as president-elect and is a lifetime member.
Dr. Harry Sarles, Jr. is a true Galvestonian. He was born at UTMB’s John Sealy Hospital in 1954 and graduated from Galveston’s Ball High School in 1972. He went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with high honors in 1975. He returned to Galveston and completed his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society in 1979.
After finishing his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at UTMB, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to pursue a gastroenterology fellowship. Following his fellowship, he returned to Texas with his new bride, Kathy Sarles, and settled in Harlingen, Texas, where he established his first independent practice with Valley Diagnostic Clinic.
During his time in Harlingen, his daughter Jillian was born, and she eventually became a UTMB alumna, graduating from their Physician Assistant Studies Program, in 2012, and joining his GI practice.
In 1991, Dr. Sarles was recruited to join the Baylor Liver Transplant Team in Dallas, Texas. In 1995, he became a founding partner of Digestive Health Associates of Texas (DHAT), which later merged into GI Alliance, the largest GI group in the country boasting over 900 gastroenterologists and 1,500 providers.
Dr. Sarles and his partners in DHAT built multiple healthcarerelated companies, including five ASCs (Ambulatory Surgery Centers), an infusion company, a pathology company, and an anesthesia company. In 2015, he founded the Digestive Health Research Institute where he served as the Principal Investigator on hundreds of clinical trials.
Dr. Sarles has been actively involved at various levels in professional societies, serving as the president of the Texas Society of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy and the American College of Gastroenterology, a 20,000 member organization, in 2014.
He advocated at both the state and US Congress levels for the regulation of colon cancer screening benefits, pushing for coverage by insurance companies and CMS.
His dedication to clinical research is highlighted by his role as the president of the Academy of Physicians involved in Clinical Research. Dr. Sarles has contributed significantly to the scientific community through the publication of articles, presentations at national scientific meetings, and lectures on various GI topics.
Dr. Sarles has demonstrated a commitment to education by establishing the UTMB Sarles Family Scholarship in Internal Medicine and currently hosts UTMB students in his clinical practice for their GI rotations.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Sarles enjoys spending time at this ranch in Gainesville, Texas, engaging in activities such as tractor time, golf, and fishing. In recent years, he has embraced the role of grandfather, fondly known as “Papa Bear” to two grandchildren.
Dr. Sarles’ journey is marked by a combination of medical excellence, leadership, advocacy, education, and a rich personal life.
Dr. Bobby J. Wroten graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. He continued his education at the University of Texas Medical Branch [UTMB] School of Medicine at Galveston where he earned his medical degree in 1970. During his time at UTMB, he demonstrated leadership as the elected President of the Junior Class and was recognized with induction in the Mu Delta Honorary Medical Service Society. His involvement in the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity also forged enduring relationships.
Following graduation, Dr. Wroten and his wife, Susan, a UTMB School of Nursing 1970 alum, moved to Ft. Worth where he embarked on a rotating internship at John Peter Smith [JPS] Hospital and later became one of the first three residents in the newly established Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at JPS. He successfully completed the program in 1975, obtaining certification by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in 1976, and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. His commitment to service extended to the Texas Army National Guard, where he served as a reserve medical officer and attained the rank of Major.
Dr. Wroten’s pursuit of excellence led him to a hand rotation at the University of California, Davis Orthopedic Program and a prestigious Boyes, Stark, Ashworth, and Zemel Hand Fellowship in Los Angeles, California. Returning to Ft. Worth, he, alongside his friend, Dr. Robert Bunata, became the first two full-time board-certified orthopedists specializing in hand surgery in the area.
Throughout his career, Dr. Wroten garnered recognition for his expertise. He was inducted into the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in 1981 and received the Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand in 1989 and
was elected to the Texas Surgical Society in 2002. His contributions were acknowledged through listings in Top Docs, Super Docs, and Best Doctors in America. He served as the hand consultant for the Texas Rangers Baseball Club and for the PGA players at the Colonial Golf Tournament, treating athletes across various disciplines.
Despite his numerous accolades, Dr. Wroten’s true passion lay in connecting with his patients on a personal level and not just as a “hand to examine.” When working with his residents during their hand rotations, he emphasized the importance of not only examining the hands but also engaging with their patients on a personal level while interacting with them.
One of his proudest moments was when his son, Dr. Eric Wroten, also a UTMB alum and a fellowship-trained orthopedic hand surgeon, joined his practice in 2006. They worked together until 2012 when Dr. Wroten transitioned to JPS Orthopedic Department as an Assistant Professor of Hand Surgery. His commitment to education, teaching, and patient care was further recognized in 2014 when he received the Gold Headed Cane Award from the Tarrant County Medical Society.
Dr. Wroten maintained a strong connection with UTMB throughout his career as a Lifetime Member of the Alumni Association. His contributions extended to leadership roles including President of the UTMB Alumni Association Board of Trustees in 2000. Even in retirement, he continues to support UTMB as a Development Board member.
In 2018, Dr. Wroten officially retired embracing a life of travel, playing the guitar, photography, but, most importantly — cherishing moments with his wife Susan, children Wendi and Eric, their spouses, and four grandsons. His legacy is not only in his medical achievements but also in his dedication to patient care, education, and the ongoing support of his alma mater.
