January 2022 Dear Friends and Colleagues: Happy New Year! As I reflect on the past year, I do so with a grateful heart and a new perspective. I was humbled to have been named the sixth president of this great institution by the University of Texas System Board of Regents in October 2021. Serving as ad interim president and now president of The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) over the past two-plus years has been both an honor and a dream come true. My passion for UTMB and its mission has grown exponentially since my days as a medical student. I am continually amazed by the incredible people who give their time and talents to UTMB. It is an absolute privilege to lead this family of outstanding faculty, staff, and students. We marked UTMB’s 130th anniversary in 2021. Since its founding, the institution has grown from one campus with two buildings, 26 medical students, and 13 faculty to a world-renowned academic medical center. Today, UTMB boasts: • More than 13,500 employees, including more than 750 residents, fellows and post-doctoral candidates • Four schools – soon to be five • An enrollment of nearly 3,940 students, residents, and fellows • A celebrated research enterprise that attracted $162M in funding last year • A comprehensive health care system with four hospital campuses and network of 91 clinics This was another year for the record books at UTMB. The leadership role that Medical Branch scientists and health care providers took in the battle against COVID-19 cannot be understated. The Galveston National Lab was among the first in the U.S. to obtain samples of the virus for study and our Dr. Pei-Yong Shi developed a reverse genetic system that sped vaccine development and evaluation and provided invaluable insight into how the virus evolved. As of December 10, 2021, our doctors, nurses, and their colleagues had: • Cared for 9,473 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, including 706 who died of the virus • Run 622,576 COVID-19 tests • Administered 345,639 COVID-19 vaccines and 5,525 monoclonal antibody treatments We are grateful for their service and continued commitment to their patients. But our story is much bigger than COVID-19. UTMB received approval from the UT System and the Council of Education to establish a new School of Public Health, and we have laid the groundwork for an accredited, three-year emergency medicine residency program. Our scientists are collaborating on the establishment of the UTMB Institute for Drug Discovery and the UTMB Brain Health Institute. Both developments will build on demonstrated excellence in these fields. As an economic engine for the State of Texas, UTMB contributed $3.3B in business volume over the past year, $2B in personal income, and accounted for more than 46,000 total jobs. Throughout Galveston and Brazoria counties alone, UTMB was responsible for nearly $573M in business volume and almost 14,000 direct or indirect jobs. 2021 was year of great challenge and tremendous success for UTMB. As we move forward into 2022 our focus remains on our mission of innovative education, cutting-edge research, and the highest quality patient care. Thank you for your continued support of UTMB and for the opportunity to lead this talented group of professionals and students. Best wishes for a prosperous and healthy New Year.
Ben G. Raimer, MD, MA, FAAP President The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health)
A Note from Executive Leadership Timothy J. Harlin, DSc, MBA, FACHE Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, UTMB Health System
Throughout 2021, COVID-19 persisted as we experienced two major surges, but we found hope through vaccines and treatments such as monoclonal antibodies. Winter Storm Uri and Hurricane Nicholas also added stress during an already stressful time. However, 2021 was defined by more than a pandemic and extreme weather—UTMB saw tremendous growth as patients returned for care. We added 39 inpatient beds and seven new clinics, and compared to 2020, we discharged 3,000 more patients, and completed 575,000 more outpatient encounters and 12,000 more emergency department visits. The dedication of our workforce continues to work wonders, taking on any challenge as we work toward a common goal of providing Best Care. While we continue to overcome hurdles at UTMB, we look forward to a bright 2022.
Becky Korenek, MBA, MHA Executive Vice President for Business Development and Chief Strategy Officer
As we turned the page to a new year, 2021 brought exceptional growth in the communities we serve. We have added physicians and clinical programs in Galveston to meet referral needs of patients across the region, providing tertiary and quaternary care. We also recruited more primary and specialty care providers to Angleton, opening the Dave Bleakney Building to support primary care, urgent care and specialty services. In Clear Lake, we hired additional specialists, opened more clinic space to serve patients and expanded operational hours of our pediatric emergency room. Additionally, we added beds in League City and increased clinic services to meet growing demand. We have been fortunate to experience growth across UTMB, and we will continue to expand locations and services in 2022—meeting the needs of our patients and communities we serve.
Charles P. Mouton, MD, MS, MBA Executive Vice President, Provost and Dean, School of Medicine
Building on UTMB’s long history of excellence in education, research, and clinical care, we are excited to expand our footprint in academic medicine in 2022 and beyond. Our School of Public and Population Health is preparing to admit students, and we are hiring faculty for our Emergency Medicine residency. Our Institute for Drug Discovery is taking shape, enhancing our contributions in the fight against deadly pathogens. Our Faculty Group Practice will expand as we hire 166 new faculty physicians. These are a few of the developments ahead, with more opportunities on the horizon. The last two years have taught us much and made us stronger. As Texas’s first academic medical center, UTMB embarks on its next 130 years delivering on its mission to offer innovative education, pursue cutting-edge research, and provide outstanding patient care.
A Brief Message from Educational Leadership David A. Brown, PT, PhD, FAPTA Senior Vice President and Dean, School of Health Professions
The UTMB School of Health professions consists of excellent educational programs and research within the departments of Physical therapy, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Respiratory Care, and Nutrition, Metabolism, and Rehabilitation Sciences. We are guided in our future endeavors by our exciting new initiative program RISES, which stands for Research/Influence & Impact/Student Success & Preparedness/Experiences in Clinical Settings/Strategic Capacity & Transformation. With each of these initiatives, we will be leading our health care professions to greater educational training experiences, more impactful research, and innovative clinical care and community engagement. We aspire to provide the best learning environment for our students, the best work environment for our employees, and the best health care opportunities for our community.
Deborah J. Jones, PhD, MSN, RN Senior Vice President and Dean, School of Nursing
For over 130 years, the UTMB School of Nursing has been on the leading edge of academic excellence, innovation, and practice, striving to improve health for diverse populations in Texas and around the world. With an alumni network of more than 14,000, we have a proud history of preparing nurses to become leaders who influence change at state, national, and international levels. Through innovation, technology, and access to our 11 distinct programs, we continually meet the needs of diverse learners in an ever-changing field. More than 90 percent of our BSN and MSN graduates go on to practice in the state of Texas. Through strong leadership, quality education, high-impact research, meaningful service, and intentional practice, we will continue to improve health and advance nursing excellence.
M. Kristen Peek, PhD Dean ad interim, School of Public and Population Health The School of Public and Population Health was approved by the UT System Board of Regents in May 2021 and by the Council on Education for Public Health in August 2021. We have begun the transition with an interim Dean appointed and an organizational structure with Associate Deans and five departments to be completed in Spring 2022. We have 35 faculty, 130 students, 3 PhD programs, and 5 MPH tracks. We have sought input on the research and education directions for the new school from faculty and internal stakeholders and will be reaching out to external community stakeholders in January 2022. The school officially comes online in May 2022, and our accreditation site visit is June 2023.
Robert J. Philpot, Jr., PhD, PA-C, DFAAPA Chair, Department of Physician Assistant Studies
2021 marks the 50th year for the Department of Physician Assistant Studies. The program, accredited through 2027, boasts a PA National Certifying Exam five-year pass rate of 93% and a three-year graduation rate of 100%. The five-year average of students from under-represented minorities is 44%. Our mission, to develop and graduate academically and clinically prepared PAs, is achieved with our emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and a structured approach to lifelong learning and interprofessional education. One of the unique attributes of the program is our faculty-coached learning teams of six students per faculty member. Coaches bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the students. Our graduates are prepared to positively impact the health care industry with their passion for increasing patient access to quality health care.
Giulio Taglialatela, PhD Dean ad interim, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) continues to evolve to meet the needs of its trainees. The public health program has experienced significant growth, and the establishment of a new School of Public and Population Health at UTMB is currently underway. Trainee career development resources have been expanded to include offerings such as the Accelerate to Industry career readiness training program and the Blackstone LaunchPad network. Additionally, GSBS leadership meetings have been expanded to include training grant directors to support bidirectional dialogue and strong relationships between training program leaders. The GSBS also utilized resources from the Florence and Marie Hall Endowment over the past year to advance excellence in education through teaching seminars, the purchase of equipment for new modalities in teaching, and more.

Galveston Campus
For more than a century, UTMB Health has served Texas and Texans from its historic Galveston campus, long anchored by the John Sealy Hospital. The 12-story hospital is in the midst of a multimillion dollar renovation that includes enhanced technological capabilities, expanded patient rooms, including a new Mother/Baby Labor & Delivery Unit and Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and an improved hospital exterior to ensure a healing environment for patients and their families. In 2016, the Galveston campus expanded with the opening of the Jennie Sealy Hospital, which offers advanced health care services to patients in a soothing, healing environment that also supports stateof-the-art training for future health professionals. With input from physicians, patients, and medical staff, Jennie Sealy Hospital was designed using evidence-based strategies known to improve quality, safety and efficiency. Patient rooms have beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico or Galveston Bay and are designed to provide a team-based, patient- and family-centered approach to patient care. Natural light engulfs the hospital on Galveston’s East End, and beautiful artwork by local artists adorns the walls throughout the hospital. The lighting, artwork and serenity of the Jennie Sealy Hospital all work to reduce anxiety and speed healing. Together, the John Sealy and Jennie Sealy hospitals provide a full range of services for infants, children and adults and offers the highest level of care for the most complex needs including a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Blocker Burn Unit, and a Level I Trauma Center. HE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS MEDICAL BRANCH (UTMB HEALTH) has a long and storied history of improving health in its home state and beyond. Since opening in 1891, the university has graduated more physicians than any other Texas medical school, awarded more than 45,000 degrees, diplomas and certificates to health professionals and health scientists, advanced understanding and treatment of disease through pioneering research, and helped hundreds of thousands of patients each year overcome illness and injury. The university’s focus on health extends to the economy as well. UTMB Health is a strong, vital institution that continues to create significant economic benefit for Galveston Island, Galveston County, the greater Houston region and the entire state of Texas.
Other notable UTMB facts • In FY21, UTMB had a $2.8 billion budget, enrollment of 3,400 students and more than 13,600 employees throughout the state of Texas.
Over the past two years, as our world has confronted a deadly pandemic, UTMB Health’s scientists, patient care providers and staff members have risen to the occasion to save lives and improve the health of our communities. A closer look at those efforts, as of Dec. 10, 2021, reveal that UTMB:
• $139 million in research expenditures in FY21.
• Completed more than 622,500 COVID-19 tests
• Four campuses: Galveston Campus, Angleton Danbury Campus, League City Campus and the Clear Lake Campus.
• Treated more than 9,400 hospitalized COVID-19 patients at our four campuses
• Five schools educating the health care professionals of the future: School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Health Professions, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the recenlty approved School of Public and Population Health. • UTMB is home to one of only two national biocontainment labs and the only national lab in Texas; also one of the world’s largest university-based vaccine-development centers. • UTMB named to the IBM Watson Health Top 100 Hospitals List in 2020, ranked in the Top 15 nationwide among major teaching hospitals
• Administered nearly 346,000 COVID-19 vaccine shots through the UTMB Health System and a community partnership with Galveston County and Galveston County Health District. Aside from UTMB’s exceptional legacy in support of its patient care, research and education missions, the university also provides a tremendous return for taxpayers, philanthropies and society as a whole. • According to a 2016 analysis of UTMB’s economic impact, the university’s operations generated more than $3.3 billion in business volume, more than $2 billion in personal income for Texas residents and a total of 46,242 jobs from both direct and indirect employment at UTMB.
