MONTBLANC.UTMB.WORLD #20YEARSOFUTMB

A TIME FOR EMOTIONS

‘‘On Saturday 30 August 2003, at 4 a.m., I kicked off the inaugural event and my husband Michel took the start of a race which, 20 years later, has become the leading event in trail running, the pinnacle for thousands of runners around the world. 20 editions, 20 years of passion, sweat and unforgettable moments of intense emotion... And we’re determined to keep up the good work! At the Dacia UTMB® Mont-Blanc, each and every runner becomes someone’s hero, whether it’s their own, their family or their town. It always thrills me to see that trail running is one of the rare sports where the last person to cross the finish line raises his arms with as much pride and enthusiasm as the first: a race with thousands of winners!

After having created, with her husband, all the IT resources for the UTMB and notably the LiveTrail, the foundation of our event, our daughter Isabelle, her husband Mickael and our son David have taken up the challenge since 2019, each in their own role with the same commitment we had in 2003. It’s a legacy that they are keeping alive by respecting what has driven us since the very first day and which is the essence of the Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc: a truly inclusive event that everyone can follow with LiveTrail and UTMB Live. A perfectly supervised event in the best health and safety conditions, where everyone is respected and the magnificent natural heritage that is Mont Blanc is safeguarded.‘‘

2 FOREWORD

MAGIC AND TEARS TEN TO TEN THOUSAND A DEDICATED, RESPONSIBLE EVENT

The Mont-Blanc and its aura, the MontBlanc and its magic spell. Everything that a person can experience there. Each runner has their reason for coming here, each runner brings a spark. The MontBlanc, a magical summit. Choose to circumnavigate it, to draw its contours. Taste its appeal. Choose the race that suits us, the one that will shape our adventure and our emotions.

At the finish line, magic and tears, memories and hugs.

From just a dozen people in 2003, we now have a team of 2,500 volunteers, about a hundred volunteer doctors and nurses, medical research teams who look after the runners along the route, dozens of Environmental Ambassadors who educate and support people in protecting the environment, and more than 70 yearround employees who help organise this amazing event. Thousands of people are committed to a common goal: enable 10,000 runners and their support team to reach their goal and enjoy the beauty of the routes and the countries they cross.

Throughout the year, in close collaboration with the local communities along the route, the entire organisation works with the Environmental Commission to minimise the event’s footprint: refreshments are mainly made from local produce, and participants are required to bring their own cutlery and no plastic bottles (saving more than 8,000 plastic bottles and thousands of disposable cups). Each year, the transportation system is strengthened to complement the existing offer, reducing the number of private cars crowding the valleys.

What strikes you is this amount of energy. Welcoming each other. The time we give. The energy we devote to it. For ourselves, for others, for the pleasure of sharing and meeting. This is also our raison d’être. To give the opportunity to get together for just one week, to make three countries (France, Italy, Switzerland) and 18 municipalities live together for the time of an event. Giving your time means working to promote territories, heritage, men and women, and writing history together.

TRAIL-RUNNING: A SPORT FOR ALL

A good pair of shoes and... that’s it! All you need to experience trail-running is the ability to walk. Trail-running is accessible to everyone, whatever their age or physical condition, and although it was little-known 20 years ago, it is now becoming an increasingly popular and fun sport. But what exactly is trail-running?

Trail-running: in other words, running on trails. But you don’t have to be a runner to enjoy the sport! In fact, trail-running is first and foremost a hike in the great outdoors. While some prefer to walk - whether for the pleasure of taking the time to admire the scenery or for reasons relating to physical fitness - others trot or run.

Trail-running offers a wide range of emotions: a feeling of freedom, far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities. The feeling of reconnecting with nature, in the heart of the forests, mountains and valleys close to home. The feeling of something new when you go running on holiday or when you try out micro-adventures. A feeling of well-being: most trail runners run to keep fit and healthy. But above all a feeling of pleasure: unlike jogging, trail-running offers a variety of different terrains.

Regularity: High (9/12 months)

Peak season: March, September, October*

Favourite practice times: 6pm-9pm

*In terms of outings

More and more women are taking up running, and their reasons for doing so are not the same as men’s. Whereas men are more interested in physical fitness, women’s reasons seem to be more mental. They are looking for psychological benefits (increased self-confidence, relaxation) rather than competition or personal challenges*.

Initially regarded as a sport more suited to the ‘‘over 40s’’, with impressive performances by the likes of Marco Olmo (58) and Jacques Didry (72), exceptional young runners such as Kilian Jornet and Katie Schide are proving that trail-running is a discipline that is accessible to all ages.

HISTORY AND INNOVATION

A SUSTAINABLE, COMMITED EVENT

‘‘Crossing 3 countries, 18 towns and bringing together 10,000 runners requires an awareness of the impact you have on the environment. The Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc is an exceptional event with a strong commitment in a unique and exceptional region. Throughout the year and for each new edition, we strive to innovate and take concrete actions for the benefit of the towns and villages we cross, the runners who take part, the spectators who are welcomed, but also for all the Friends of the UTMB Mont-Blanc, to make sure that this great festival of trail running remains a moment of sharing and emotions, and to ensure that the Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc remains a moment in time, while respecting its stunning setting. The smooth running of the event is just as important as the well-being of the people living in the Mont-Blanc area and the protection of the environment.’’

1. LOCAL COMMITMENT

Today, 18 municipalities are directly involved in the race route. Since its inception, the organisers have worked closely with these partner municipalities.

Their role is essential to the smooth running of the event, thanks to their technical and logistical support ( access to roads and footpaths, public spaces and infrastructures, supply of equipment, human resources by the municipal staff, etc.) as well as the quality of the hospitality provided throughout the Tour du mont Blanc.

THE 18 PARTNER MUNICIPALITIES

Chamonix Mont-Blanc, Courmayeur, Orsières, Bourg SaintMaurice, Les Houches, Saint-Gervais, Servoz, Vallorcine, Hauteluce, Beaufort, Séez, Les Contamines Montjoie, la Thuile, Pré Saint-Didier, Morgex, Martigny-Combe, Trient, Bovernier

TOGETHER, WE CAN ACHIEVE WONDERS

Active exchanges between the French, Swiss and Italian municipalities involved in the Tour du Mont Blanc. Involvement of the local population, with the support of the residents and the strong commitment from the volunteers.

‘‘There’s something very special in the air during the week. There’s something magical about this moment and it’s not just down to the riders.‘‘

Major economic benefits: by 2022, the UTMB Mont-Blanc will have generated €23 million in spending in the region*, across all the valley’s socio-economic sectors.

‘‘From a business point of view, it’s one of the two best days of the year’’.

An event that promotes employment, a driver of seasonal and annual jobs.

‘‘The event takes place at the end of August, beginning of September, which means that seasonal workers’ contracts can be extended by a week’’.

The teamwork between the organisers and the local authorities has improved media coverage for the whole valley, with over 5,000 articles published on the Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc and more than 500 journalists attending the 2022 event, many of them from abroad. The world capital of trail running is in the Mont-Blanc region.

‘‘The Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc is now an integral part of Chamonix’s economic activities’’.

HISTORY AND INNOVATION

A FANTASTIC PLAYGROUND TO BE RESPECTED

ORGANIC OR REGIONAL PRODUCTS, 0 PLASTIC BOTTLES AND BIO-WASTE COLLECTION: ECO-FRIENDLY REFRESHMENT STANDS

2. SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENT

PRESERVING THE AREA: ACTION ON THE GROUND ALL YEAR ROUND

With the support of the Environmental Ambassadors, the Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc encourages participants every year to respect the ecosystem of the Mont Blanc massif as a whole, with, for example, the obligation not to leave the marked trails at the risk of being penalised (between 15 minutes and 1 hour of time-out to be applied at once). The event is fervently and passionately committed to preserving the areas it visits in France, Italy and Switzerland, and to supporting local communities. In 2023, at least 4 trail maintenance projects are planned in Les Contamines, Courmayeur, Beaufort and Hauteluce.

From its very inception, the Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc has aimed at reducing to a strict minimum the waste produced throughout the week. Reusable cups, the addition of cutlery and bowls for eating hot food (BYOU system) to the compulsory equipment, measures to reduce over-packaging, etc. Many of these features have already been in place for a number of years.

In 2023, the Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc is going one step further and will be offering refreshment stations that are 100% plastic bottle-free. A challenge achieved by using carbonation machines, even for soft drinks. The event has always encouraged the use of tap water, saving 8,000 plastic bottles of water and their transport every year.

Waste management at the French refreshment points will also be going from strength to strength, with 6 refreshment points now equipped to collect bio-waste (compared with 3 in 2022), and the ambition to recycle more than 700 kg of organic waste.

With the figure rising every year, by 2023 40% of the food supplies will be made up of regional products, to limit transportation and encourage the involvement of local players. Most of these products have quality labels such as Agriculture Biologique, Label Rouge, AOP or AOC.

Recently, the UTMB World Series and the Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc joined forces with Näak, the nutrition and hydration brand for trail and ultra-distance runners. A second B Corp3-certified brand, alongside Buff, which will provide participants with «sustainable fuel» at all refreshment points.

EMPOWERING RUNNERS

A personal goblet is compulsory for all runners, as well as a rubbish bag. Environment ambassadors ensure the cleaning of trails, no disposable utensils are used at aid station. These are all measures taken to preserve the environment in which the Dacia UTMB® MontBlanc races take place.

11 DACIA UTMB® MONT-BLANC - PRESS KIT 2023

SOME PRACTICAL EXAMPLES

BYOU

BYOU system: no more disposable crockery is made available to runners and volunteers. They have to carry their own utensils if they want to eat hot food. This system is called ‘‘Bring Your Own Utensils’’ (BYOU).

On-site awareness initiatives: runners meet the ‘Environmental Ambassadors’ whose job it is to help them protect the environment (sorting waste, cleaning up the trails).

Signposting: the Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc has developed a special signposting system (sticks not allowed, sensitive areas, etc.) to help runners understand the natural environment in which they are competing.

Penalties: Penalties ranging from 30 minutes to 3 hours will be applied to any runner not respecting the sustainability rules.

12
HISTORY AND INNOVATION

Since its inception, the Dacia UTMB MontBlanc has introduced a number of initiatives aimed at preserving its playing field and raising awareness among all those involved. In 2017, the event considerably strengthened its commitment to the environment by becoming one of the first parties to sign the GESI* Charter (Major International Sports Events) on the initiative of the Ministry of Sport, the Olympic and Paralympic Games and WWF France. This collective action includes the organisers, local authorities, runners, supporters, partners and volunteers, notably the Environmental Ambassadors.

AN ECO-FRIENDLY TRANSPORTATION STRATEGY

EIn 2023, the organisation will be strengthening its mobility plan with a budget of almost half a million euros invested for the occasion. The objectives of this transportation strategy aim at:

- avoid the use of more than 5,000 individual vehicles in the area.

- provide a shared solution to relieve traffic congestion in the valleys and make it easier for runners, support staff and spectators to travel throughout the Mont Blanc region.

- encourage as many people as possible to use public transport provided by the local authorities, particularly the Chamonix Valley.

- reduce air pollution.

One of the new features for 2023 will be the introduction of a brand new CAR-SHARING PLATFORM to get to the event.

‘‘We are investing heavily to protect the environment and limit individual travel in the valley. To do this, every year we implement a transport plan offering 8 UTMB Bus routes to enable runners to get to their starting points and accompanying people to follow the race. This year, we’re increasing the number of buses by 50, bringing the total to 200. Our ambitious target is to transport 100% of runners and 100% of accompanying people throughout the week. By providing additional car parks, setting up Base Camps reserved for UTMB Bus users, closing roads and banning parking along the route, we’re encouraging as many people as possible to use public transport.’’

A FAIR, INNOVATIVE RACE

HEALTH: THE CHOICE OF ACTION

In 2007, the Medical Committee was created. As it happens, every year the Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc races are a life-size laboratory for medical studies and surveys organised with the help of volunteer doctors. As well as being in charge of validating research projects, the Commission is invited to suggest treatments suited to the pathologies the runners experience.

As part of our health policy, we work in partnership with Athletes for Transparency and the ITRA . Since 2018, each runner has been invited to create their own health account to improve their medical care during the event.

CHOOSING FAIRNESS

The Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc, in its capacity as Finals of the UTMB World Series circuit, recently unveiled its brand new pregnancy policy in a strong desire to support new parents. This policy, which will apply from 2023, mainly covers the issues of deferral and registration priority for pregnant athletes, athletes whose partner is pregnant and athletes in the process of adoption or surrogate motherhood. This policy will enable runners to be back on the trail in a safe environment, and within a sufficient period of time after giving birth.

In addition to the pregnancy policy, other measures aimed at promoting greater fairness in trail running, particularly for athletes with disabilities and transgender or non-binary people, will be introduced between now and the end of the year.

14
HISTORY AND INNOVATION

3. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY SOLIDARITY AT THE HEART OF THE DACIA UTMB® MONT-BLANC

‘‘The organisation is rooted in a mountain culture and is driven by a desire to help everyone achieve their own goals: overcoming difficulties, battling illness, helping children to grow and blossom. For a number of years now, the organisers have been offering solidarity bib numbers to support 15 associations working in a variety of areas, such as childhood, disability and the environment. Over time, we’ve noticed that runners are becoming more and more involved in the associations they support: sportandnon-profitorganisationsaretwoworldsthatcometogetherandcomplement each other. It’s a real commitment that makes the UTMB teams as proud as it does the runners, who get an extra boost from running for something that’s important to them.’’

In 2023, 181 ‘solidarity bib numbers’ have been allocated to support 12 associations, two of which are new:

- The NGO Humatem, working to provide medical equipment and strengthen biomedical skills in developing countries.

- AFH Association française des hémophiles (French haemophilia association), which provides information, mutual support and defends the rights of people with haemophilia, Willebrand’s disease and constitutional bleeding disorders.

‘‘We’ve noticed over the years that runners are becoming increasingly committed to supporting charities: on the one hand with the solidarity bib numbers that are quickly taken every year, but also with the donations made by runners right up to the start of the event. Between 2014 and 2023, we raised over €3 million for 37 local charities! It’s a result we’re proud of, and one that makes us want to go even further in the years to come. That’s the spirit of sport!’’

This year, to make an even greater commitment and support more causes, the UTMB Group has created a new UTMB Cares endowment fund and introduced 55 ‘‘Care Bibs’’, giving runners the opportunity to support 4 projects: support for sustainability projects aimed at preserving and restoring the natural mountain environment, a mentoring programme to encourage women to take part in trail running, a programme to raise awareness of alternative forms of mobility in the mountains, and support for local associations.

THE NOT-SO-ORDINARY HEROES OF

THE DACIA UTMB® MONT-BLANC

UNUSUAL PERSONALITIES

Every year, 10,000 runners gather at the foot of the Mont-Blanc massif to share an exceptional sporting and human adventure. For these men and women from all over the world, the Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc is more than just a race.

Behind each participant, there is a story, a meaning that makes sense to them, and personal motivations. Whether they’re a single mother, a barman, a pensioner or a top-level athlete, they all have a good reason for taking part in the world’s trail running pinnacle, whether it’s for the first time or because they’re used to it.

Élodie NICOLAS

Christian BOURBON

THE UNEXPECTED CHALLENGE

HOW COMES? In June 2022, Elodie finished 2nd in the Ultra du Saint Jacques (100M) on the Trail du SaintJacques by UTMB and automatically qualified for the UTMB.

WHY DO YOU RUN? At the age of 29, Elodie went back to school and started running to take a breather in the outdoors. From short runs during lunch breaks, she gradually put on race bibs in her quest to push to her personal limits.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING? Running 4 days a week + 1 day of cycling and 1 day of physical preparation (and 1 day off).

WHAT’S NEXT? The Diagonale des Fous, which coincidentally happens to fall on her birthday!

‘‘I’m still struggling to realise how lucky I am to be taking part in such a legendary race, but I’m preparing like a true champion to make sure I don’t miss out on this event of a lifetime.’’

Age 73

Retired (38 - Isère, France)

Has already competed in the CCC, entering his 1st UTMB

THE DEAN OF THE ANNIVERSARY EDITION

HOW COMES? Christian has always been involved in sport, playing basketball until he was 30 before taking up running, first on the road and then on trails to get as close as possible to nature.

WHY DO YOU RUN? While he enjoys walking with his wife, because it’s a time for sharing, trail running for Christian is a time just for himself. He likes to prepare his races on his own, imagining them in his head.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING? Running 4 or 5 times a week, alternating short and long distances.

WHAT’S NEXT? While this UTMB may be his last ultra, Christian is planning to run the whole of Compostela.

‘‘At the age of 73, I’m tackling a 175km race for the first time. It’s a huge challenge, but I believe in it, and I’ve been preparing myself physically and mentally for a long time. I’m proud to be taking part, and even prouder to be doing so on the 20th anniversary of the event.’’

NEVER GIVE UP

HOW COMES? For over 3 years, Amy has had the UTMB in her sights and in her heart. To build her UTMB Index, she has completed the Marathon Des Sables, the Cocodona 250M (402km), the Rocky Raccoon trails and the steep slopes of The Canyons Endurance Runs by UTMB and Speedgoat Mountain Races by UTMB.

WHY DO YOU RUN? When she was 21, a car hit her and she lost her left leg below the knee. Her foundations, her youth, her confidence: she has built everything on the strength that running brings her.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING? Training 5 or 6 days a week, in a week when she can work up to 60 or 65 hours!

WHAT’S NEXT? The UTMB is a lifelong dream for Amy, and she’ll be continuing to run to improve her UTMB Index and collect Running Stones so that she can come back next year!

‘‘Running enables me to show my children that anything is possible. Running enables me to show others what is possible. As my ambitions grow, it allows me to be a positive role model. Women are a powerful force. We encourage our children to set goals, to work hard and, if they fail, we teach them to pick themselves up and carry on. I just want to help make the world a better place, and running allows me to do that.’’

A KID’S DREAM

23

years old Barman (74 - Haute Savoie, France)

Entering his 1st UTMB

HOW COMES? In 2014, when he was just 14 years old, Tom saw his father cross the finish line of the OCC. It was a real revelation, the atmosphere, the warmth, the challenge: one day, he too will cross that line!

WHY DO YOU RUN? Tom started out at the refreshment points with his mum to support his dad, but taking up trail running was an obvious choice for him, who has been running competitively since 2016. He has 4 editions of the YCC under his belt!

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING? 5 training sessions a week and 2 days off. He alternates between running and cycling, not forgetting a good night’s sleep and a healthy diet.

WHAT’S NEXT? No idea, for the moment he wants to savour the good fortune of having been picked at random with his dad.

‘‘14 years after watching my father pass under this mythical arch, I’m so happy that we’ve both been drawn! We’re going to be doing this race together, from start to finish, and I’m looking forward to seeing my mum at the refreshment points. It’s going to be a terrific family affair, and I can’t wait!’’

42 years old, father of 2 children

Headteacher in a public school (58 - Nièvre, France)

FROM THE BATACLAN TO TRACKS

HOW COMES? Initially a cyclist, Gaëtan turned to running when he had his children, as it was more compatible with family life. In 2004, he took on his first marathon and fell in love with long distances.

WHY DO YOU RUN? On 13 November 2015, Gaëtan’s life was turned upside down at the Bataclan. Since then, he has found in trail running an escape, an introspective adventure that has helped him keep his head above water.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING? Running 2 or 3 times a week after work + 2 outings at the weekend.

WHAT’S NEXT? No idea, Gaëtan was initially aiming for the CCC and finally took on the challenge of the UTMB, so he’s staying very focused!

‘‘Ultra running allows you to learn about yourself, because it’s important to stay clear-headed. After this traumatic episode in 2015, I found in the race a real lifeline that I share with my wife, my sister and my brotherin-law. For me, this UTMB is the culmination of 20 years of running.’’

WOMEN AND MEN

Mathieu Blanchard (FR)

Having joined ultrarunning in 2017, Blanchard gained fasttrack learning of long-distance running. “I can’t believe it,” he said at the finish line. “This podium on the UTMB® was a dream; I didn’t think it would happen so soon. I am on another planet!”

THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE DACIA UTMB MONT-BLANC POSSIBLE

250 HEALTH PERSONALS MOBILIZED

For supervising, keeping an eye on and rescuing runners in the different races during the week, the organizers mobilize 150 first aiders, 65 nurses and 35 doctors, as well as a private helicopter.

53 check points are installed along the routes, 120 radio sets equip the health staff and 60 computers follow «step by step» 10,000 runners committed to one of the event’s races.

A CHALLENGE WHERE YOU ARE NEVER

First of all, trail running is an opportunity to meet with one’s inner self and challenge one’s body and soul at the same time. How will the runner react to running such a distance ? Is the runner mentally and physically strong enough? Will he, she be a finisher? The answer to this question also depends on the presence of other runners, coming to take part to this extraordinary adventure.

At the night, during the one hour or so spent running together, it is possible to forge a connection of friendship and solidarity with strangers that may last for a lifetime. The fans’ enthusiasm, countless volunteers, local communities from both sides of the massif also participate in the beauty of the moment: they give their time and their warmth that can be perceived from their greetings and encouragements.

“As well as knowing how to heal, it is necessary to know how to listen, advise, cheer and also comfort in the case of an abandonment. When I find out that we have helped a runner to cross the finishing line we share their joy and happiness.”

LE DACIA UTMB® MONT-BLANC PAST AND PRESENT

THE BIRTH OF THE DACIA UTMB MONT-BLANC

In the early 2000s, trail running was largely an affair for a handful of enthusiasts. In Chamonix, a group of nine friends shared the dream of touring Mont Blanc from Chamonix, crossing three countries (France-ItalySwitzerland) before returning to Chamonix without ever looking back!

After inscribing the «Ultra-Trail International du tour du Mont-Blanc» (its original name in 2002) on the international calendar, the organisers had high hopes of welcoming 300 participants.

‘‘The Dacia UTMB Mont-Blanc was born out of a spirit of innovation by my parents and their friends. Pioneers in the imagination and creation of this ultraendurance race, the organisers have never stopped innovating, anticipating and suggesting new ideas to develop and shape trail-running. 20 years later, every start still brings tears to my eyes. The emotion that radiates from this gathering is something indescribable, and our mission is to share it with as many people as possible, always with respect for the beautiful and fragile territory of Mont Blanc’’.

Viseux-Poletti,

In 2003, 722 trail runners representing 19 nationalities lined up for the first edition. Just three years later, in 2006, 3,400 applications were received and 2,500 runners made it to the start line.

In just three years, the number of runners has tripled! From one original race, the event now features 8 events, each with its own raison d’être. Today, and for several years now, the race has reached its highest number of participants: 10,000 runners. A number that will not grow, not only to ensure everyone’s safety, but above all to preserve the delicate nature of Mont Blanc.

POINT RACING: A MATTER OF EXPERIENCE

To contain the number of entries and guarantee the runners’ top experience, from 2007 onwards, the organisers required proof of having completed two 50km races or one 80km race.

In 2009, experience was translated into qualification points, which had to be obtained by completing other races in the two years prior to the race. From the 4 points required in 2009, 5 are needed in 2011, 7 in 2013, 8 in 2015, 9 for the 2016 edition and then 10 until 2022. Today, the UTMB® has rethought its qualification model with the creation of the UTMB® World Series circuit and the introduction of the Running Stones.

PARTNERS DACIA UTMB® MONT-BLANC

CHAMONIX

The Communauté de Communes de la Vallée de Chamonix Mont-Blanc is making a major contribution, both financially and in terms of logistics, to this sporting event, which has become a global sporting benchmark. This race is organised in the middle of the wilderness, in an exceptional environment that we are keen to protect. To this end, the organisers of the Dacia UTMB® Mont-Blanc, in conjunction with the local authorities, have implemented a number of measures to reduce the impact on the environment and pollution.

On a more general level, the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Valley has, for several years now, been resolutely committed to the fight against climate and environmental change, in cooperation with a number of institutional partners and its border neighbouring regions. After being the first mountain local authority to adopt a voluntary Territorial Climate and Energy Plan (PCET) in 2012, the Communauté de communes’ ambition was clearly

stated in 2016: to make the Chamonix Valley a positive energy territory (TEPOS) for the benefit of its residents and guests.

The Chamonix Valley has an active policy for the development of public transport and active, low-carbon mobility. It encourages energy efficiency improvements in public and private buildings, with special support and substantial financial aid. The region is powered by 100% renewable electricity, its public buildings are heated by natural gas, it is building hydroelectric power stations and soon a methanisation plant, and it supports the Toits des Cimes village power station for the production of renewable energies...

In 2021, to guarantee, amplify and accelerate their commitment, the elected representatives of the Communauté de communes, with the support of ADEME, have embarked on the «Territoire Engagé Transition Ecologique» programme, a management tool designed to

bring together the local authority’s public policies and to ensure that the various players involved (elected representatives, departments, partners, etc.) focus more closely on the issues of climate, air and energy.

Since 2022, it has been working with all the Valley’s professionals in «transition workshops», to give them the tools and resources needed to promote the green transition. The objectives of the Communauté de communes de la Vallée de Chamonix are clear: to drastically reduce the impact of our climate and the emissions of atmospheric pollutants in order to preserve this outstanding region and the quality of life of its inhabitants.

As the world’s number one ski and outdoor destination, Savoie Mont Blanc is proud to be once again a partner of the Dacia UTMB® MontBlanc.

With a varied landscape of lakes and mountains and breathtaking scenery, Savoie and Haute-Savoie offer an ideal terrain for trail running. Whether you’re a long-distance expert, a ridgeline enthusiast or a first-time trail runner, the region offers more than 8,000km of marked trails for all distances and all ability levels. A legendary race and a must-be event for trail runners from all over the world, the Dacia UTMB® Mont-Blanc promotes the region to a community of enthusiasts united around strong values such as freedom, pushing one’s limits, sharing and the respect for the environment.

ESPACE MONT-BLANC

One of the most emblematic cross-border cooperations in the European mountain regions, the Espace Mont-Blanc brings together 50 municipalities in Haute-Savoie, Savoie, the Aosta Valley and Valais to work on a joint project for the sustainable and balanced management of the Mont-Blanc Massif and its valleys. The collaboration established with the Dacia UTMB® MontBlanc is based on the Ethical Partnership Contract signed in 2007 with the aim of reducing the impact of the race on the environment. In particular, the financial support provided helps to promote the use of public transport to follow the race, in order to reduce emissions. This successful partnership is part of the action programme that the Espace Mont-Blanc is putting in place to ensure the consistent management of this cross-border area, which is subject to many issues and constraints, while meeting the challenge of balancing the essential requirements of protection with those of socio-economic development while respecting the mountain resources and identity.

VALLÉE D’AOSTE

The Valle d’Aosta, with four of Europe’s highest peaks, its natural parks, Alpine lakes, breathtaking scenery and welcoming mountain refuges, is the Alpine region where sports enthusiasts and mountain lovers can enjoy an outstanding offer.

What’s more, this year Valle d’Aosta is the European Region of Sport 2023, a recognition that is a real source of pride for all the people of Valle d’Aosta, who see sport as a real driver of social cohesion, a powerful tool for integration that overcomes linguistic and cultural barriers, and a huge driving force in promoting the region. Situated at the crossroads of Europe, between three countries (Italy, France and Switzerland), its traditions bear witness to a very strong Alpine identity. For 77 years, the L’Équipe group has been a major player in French sport, with a strong, inclusive brand that informs and entertains across all media: a newspaper, magazines, a range of channels (the L’Équipe channel, L’Équipe live 1, L’Équipe live 2), a platform (website and app) and social networks.

More than 350 journalists work for the group’s various media outlets. Their ambition is to inform, investigate and report on all subjects relating to sport, athletes, events and institutions, as well as all social, political and environment-related issues...

A true multimedia group, L’Équipe reaches an average of 43 million readers, internet users and television viewers in France every month.

L’Équipe Group also organises events such as the Ballon d’Or and Demain le Sport.

TRAILS ENDURANCE

Trails Endurance is a true all-round media, from print to digital and social networks. Number 1 in trailrunning, this year Trails Endurance has produced a spectacular special collector’s edition celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Dacia UTMB® Mont-Blanc.

As a long-standing media partner of the UTMB® events, Trails Endurance follows the races on a daily basis and its experts are regularly interviewed by the national media to analyse the expansion of trailrunning. They also appear on web TV as consultants. While the magazine and its digital media are very popular with the trail running industry’s leaders, it has a very wide audience and all the runners in the sport’s community follow its publications. Over the years, the magazine’s columns and its web site have contributed to the creation of the UTMB® legend.

TUNNEL DU MONT-BLANC

Dacia UTMB® Mont-Blanc and the Mont Blanc Tunnel, are both symbols of the bond that unites the communes of the Mont Blanc region and all their inhabitants. On 14 August 1962, after 20 years of studies and work and several centuries of anticipation, the final blow of the pickaxe allowed French and Italian workers to meet under the Mont Blanc massif: a door had just been opened to new human, cultural and economic opportunities.

Today, the Franco-Italian teams working on the Mont Blanc Tunnel are preparing to undertake major renovation work on the structure of this exceptional project, with the aim of maintaining its role as a vital link between France and Italy. The Mont Blanc Tunnel - GEIE is proud to support the organisers and competitors of the Dacia UTMB® Mont Blanc, who have shown the same determination and courage as those who have made this project possible.

More than just an ‘‘official supplier’’, the Mont Blanc Tunnel is a mobility partner of the UTMB, the largest gathering of trail running enthusiasts from 100 different countries.
