CORNWALL AWAITS
It’s my great pleasure to welcome you to Arc of Attrition by UTMB After many months of preparation, the start line is in sight!
Is there a better way to start the year than competing in one of the UK’s most challenging winter ultras? We think not
Our passionate team are delighted to bring you the first event in the UTMB World Series for 2025, with this established UK event and the stunning Cornish coastline leading us into a new calendar
HAYDEN ARROWSMITH EVENT DIRECTOR
We’re excited to have Arc of Attrition, now part of the iconic UTMB World Series, kick start our year of extraordinary adventure across the world. For the next few weeks, UTMB fans all over the globe will be looking to Cornwall to see how the races unfold. We’re delighted to have you join us for this occasion
Since Arc of Attrition joined the UTMB family last year we’ve been working hard to ensure the originality of the event remains It’s a simple concept of endurance –running along the coastal trails for 100, 50 or 25 miles Yet, we all know the reality can be so very different Cornwall provides a rugged and beautiful landscape to inspire us all The views are beautiful – if they can be seen through the discomfort and darkness! It’s therefore vital you are prepared for the wind, rain and cold which could be with us in only a few weeks time This is the UK after all. Nothing is guaranteed when it comes to our inclement winter weather
The tenth ’Arc’ will be larger than it has ever been before. This is a huge testament to the vision of Fergy, Jane and Andy, our passionate Race Directors, and the energy of our amazing Arc Angel volunteers over the previous nine editions This authentic and local focus, combined with the global reach of UTMB, will provide a unique event experience for you all to savor this January It’s our aspiration for this authenticity to continue long into the future and establish Arc of Attrition as one of the mustdo ultras in the UK and further afield
For the event to continue to be successful we need cooperation from a variety of important groups and stakeholders. We’ve been entrusted by the South West Coast Path Association, the National Trust and the local coastal communities, to host this event responsibly. We need all our runners to play their part too. Please ensure you are courteous to other trail users, remain on the marked routes, and leave no trace except your shoe prints while out running or exploring the landscapes during your stay
Finally, we wish you all the best with your final preparations and look forward to welcoming you to the South West of the UK very soon

GREATER FEMALE PARTICIPATION
RACE MEASURES WE IMPLEMENT
FOR OUR FEMALE PARTICIPANTS
We believe a women’s place is on the start line and at Arc of Attrition by UTMB we are actively including and encouraging greater female participation at the event There are passionate communities of female trail runners across the UK who would excel at and enjoy the event, but sadly our statistics are still far from representational of the UK running community. We acknowledge there is still plenty of work to be done and we are a long way from an equal showing of both women and men on our start lines
Where possible we incorporate industry best practice across Arc of Attrition to ensure our female participants are welcomed and supported, such as following and incorporating Race Guidelines published and encouraged by SheRACES .
LEVEL THE START LINE
• We use inclusive imagery (men / women / under-represented groups) within our event day coverage and on our website and social media throughout the year.
• We have started hosting women focused online webinars and Q&A sessions to provide women with the opportunity to ask questions and talk to other more experienced female participants as they plan and prepare for their race.
• We have a pregnancy deferral policy for female participants who are pregnant, or participants with a pregnant partner, or participants adopting or birthing via surrogacy. EQUAL THE EXPERIENCE
• There are female only toilets at the start, finish and at each aid station within our races We provide female sanitary and period products at these toilets. Our volunteers are briefed that these toilets are only for women
• We acknowledge the importance of female safety and all our aid stations are staffed with a mixture of male and female volunteers.
• Our Arc of Attrition event t-shirts (selected when you registered) are available in women’s specific sizes .
RESPECT OUR COMPETITION
• Equal coverage and airtime is given to both the men’s and women’s races on social media on race day
• Our media staff are provided with gender and diversity guidance to a create wide selection of images
• Winners in both the men’s and women’s races receive the same prizes and prize money (if applicable) .
• Wave starts give better visibility of women at the front of our start lines as well as more room to race
AID STATION INFORMATION
AID STATIONS
Along each of the race routes there are specific locations where participants can take on some extra food and drinks supplies, seek shelter to rest for a period of time during the race. These aid stations provide basic food and drink for consuming while you stop and catch your breath, plus important toilet facilities too!
Your elapsed race time continues while you are at an aid station – make sure you factor this in while taking a break Each aid station has a specific cut-off time which you need to avoid if you wish to continue in the race. You must have exited the aid station before the cut-off time is reached to continue along the course.
Aid stations will supply drinking water, Coca-Cola and Näak Energy drink mixes for filling your water bottles or hydration packs If you want to drink these straight from the dispenser or container you’ll need to use your personal reusable cup (part of the mandatory kit list for all races!).
Undertaking a race such as Arc of Attrition requires a level of autonomy and self-sufficiency with respect to your own fuelling and hydration While the event provides drinks, snacks and light-bites at aid stations, these are to complement your own nutrition and planning You should not only rely on the food at aid stations to support your energy requirements, but bring with you the specific nutrition used in your training For Arc 100 and Arc 50 participants, you can add extra specific nutrition items to your drop-bag for collection at the relevant aid station.
Every participant must make sure, when leaving an aid station, they have the necessary quantity of snacks and fluids to keep them fuelled until at least the next aid station

SPECTATING ON THE RACES
SPECTATING – ARC 100, ARC 50 AND ARC 25
We know many of you will travel with friends and family who want to experience the event as a spectator, specifically trying to catch a glimpse of running along part of the course The South West Coast Path features many stunning views and beautiful beaches, with plenty of vantage points to see the races pass through There are idyllic coves and town harbours waiting to be explored However, we need to be mindful of the limitations some of these areas have
Due to the remote locations of some aid stations, we have been selective with which locations are suitable for spectators to gather at. We must also be strict with which locations are not suitable for spectating and we instruct you to inform your family and friends not to visit these locations For Arc of Attrition to be successful we need everyone to cooperate with these requests Participants have a responsibility to ensure their spectators follow these instructions.
Below is a list of locations and populated areas where people must not arrive to spectate:
§ Coverack – ✘ SPECTATING FORBIDDEN
§ Mousehole – ✘ SPECTATING FORBIDDEN
§ Porthcurno (including Minack Theatre) – ✘ SPECTATING FORBIDDEN
§ Botallack - ✘ SPECTATING FORBIDDEN BEFORE 7:30AM

While we encourage people to enjoy spectating the race, please remember this is a competition Spectators must not interfere with the participants or offer additional support other than verbal encouragement, cheering and clapping!
You are responsible for instructing your spectators to be mindful of their noise levels within residential areas. This is particularly important during both Friday and Saturday night and the early hours of Saturday morning Each race route travels close to houses so please be respectful to local residents Air horns, loud hailers or sirens are not permitted.
Spectators are expected to be respectful towards all other users of the South West Coast Path Our participants and spectators do not have priority over other members of the public using the trails at the same time as the event

WAVE STARTS
All races will be using wave starts
• Arc 100
• Arc 50
• Arc 25
Wave 1 (12:00) / Wave 2 (12:30)
Wave 1 (08:30) / Wave 2 (08:45)
Wave 1 (11:30) / Wave 2 (12:00) / Wave 3 (12:30)
We will be using wave starts to improve the start line positioning and reduced congestion during the first sections of trail. This will allow you to better establish your pace amongst the other participants and helps with our efforts to reduce potential congestion along sections of the South West Coast Path
Your wave start time will be automatically allocated to you in January and will be based on your UTMB Index Participants with a higher UTMB Index will start in the earlier waves Participants without a UTMB Index will start in the later waves
It is important you start in the wave you will be allocated to help with the management of the race There will be NO opportunity to move forward into an earlier wave from the one you have been allocated Participants who do not start in their allocated wave may be disqualified from the results
Please note the cut-off timings displayed on the website are based on the last wave for each race. If your wave start is an earlier wave (i.e. not the last wave), it is important you take note of the cut-off timings appropriate for your wave to help you finish within the time limit. These timings are listed on the next page to help with your progress along the course.
If you do not complete the course within the available cumulative race time (Arc 100 – 36 hours, Arc 50 – 15 hours 30 minutes and Arc 25 – 9 hours ), and take longer to reach the finish, you will not be included in the race results To be awarded a finisher medal and Running Stones, you must finish within the cumulative race time detailed below.

CUT-OFF TIMES
Cut-off times are calculated to allow participants to reach the finish in the maximum amount of time allowed and are indicated on the course profile and course information on the website.
The cut-off time indicated for an aid station is the latest time a participant must leave the venue. Anyone who has not exited an aid station by this time will be withdrawn from the race immediately
MEDICAL
There are several locations along the route(s) where medical staff are positioned to support participants who may require medical assistance Medical staff along the route(s) are in contact with Event Control staff based near the race finish in Porthtowan
Medical staff are available to assist any person with a medical concern by using the resources of the event, or by liaising with the local emergency services
Medical staff are not responsible for treating a participant’s blisters or minor footcare. It is the responsibility of the participant to care for their feet

RACE RULES AND INFO
WAYMARKING
Arc of Attrition is a waymarked course. All race routes will be identified by a series of small, high-visibility, waymarkers along the course for you to follow. These are either flags placed into the ground, yellow streamers attached to tree branches or rocks, or plastic directional arrows on gates, stiles or signposts
Waymarkers are positioned approximately every 100m However, on long stretches of continuous trail the spacing may be increased. Likewise, on shorter more technical stretches of trail, waymarkers may be more frequent
• For obvious, well - defined, sections of trail markers will be placed approx every 200m
• For non - obvious, difficult and technical sections of trail markers will be placed approx. every 25m.
• For junctions or sharp turns markers will be positioned in proximity of each other Typically, three markers close together on approach and three after the turn This may be complemented with a directional arrow
Waymarkers are made from high contrast red and white fabric They include reflective material to ensure they are visible at night and reflect your headtorch light. To protect the environment we do not use paint on the trails
IMPORTANT : If you can no longer see any waymarkers ahead of you, or have not seen a waymarker for a considerable distance, we recommend you stop running and check your surroundings You may have missed a junction or turn. We recommend you download the race GPX file from the Arc of Attrition website prior to the event and use this to support the course waymarking Final race GPX files will be made available online during the week before the event
WITHDRAWING FROM THE RACE
During the race you may become injured or unable to continue If you need to withdraw from the race, you must make your way to the nearest aid station. This may be the aid station you had previously visited on the course
Participants can only withdraw from the race at an aid station This is for safety reasons so we know who has withdrawn from the race, and subsequently who is still competing You cannot voluntarily withdraw from the race at any other location unless you’re severely injured and extracted by our Medical or Response Teams
Upon withdrawing from the race you will have the barcode taken from your race bib and your GPS tracker removed (Arc 100 and Arc 50 participants only) You will still be allowed access to the aid station facilities You must keep your race bib displayed as this provides you with access to medical services and transport to the race finish
We can transport withdrawn participants to the race finish in Porthtowan by our Transport Team volunteer drivers Depending on the demand for transport, it could be several hours before you are driven back to Porthtowan. If you have withdrawn at an aid station where spectating or a personal assistant is permitted, it may be quicker for a friend or family member to collect you (providing vehicles are permitted to park nearby at the aid station)
All participants who withdraw, or are withdrawn, from the race are not allowed to continue along the course .
RACE RULES AND INFO
MANDATORY KIT
To ensure the safety and the smooth running of the event, each participant must carry with them all the items listed in the mandatory kit checklist and take all the clothing and equipment with them during the race, even if the participant is not using it, or does not expect to use it.
All participants will be subject to a mandatory kit check at registration. Organised mandatory kit inspections may also be carried out at random during the race without warning. A penalty up to disqualification will be applied to participants who do not have any of the individual mandatory kit items with them when inspected.
All clothing must be the correct size for the participant and without having been modified in any way after leaving the factory (patch repairs to clothing similar to an equivalent factory standard are permitted). You carry this equipment in a pack which must be with you during registration when your race bib is collected
Due to the long duration of the event, participants may need to consider and plan how to ensure their electronic devices have adequate battery life to function throughout the whole race This is especially true for headtorches, rear flashing lights and mobile phones. This may mean choosing equipment which can be charged on-the-go or carrying additional batteries or interchangeable battery packs.
Arc 100 and Arc 50 runners: please consider using your drop-bag items to recharge your electronic devices.
MUSIC : Listening to music using earphones is tolerated, so long as it is safe to do so All earphones must be removed when approaching all road crossings or running alongside traffic, within aid stations, and when approaching and passing any staff or volunteers on the route so important messages can be heard by you
POLES: If you choose to take poles, they must be carried for the duration of the race. If you decide to use poles, it is forbidden to start without poles and then collect them during the race. No poles are allowed to be stored in the drop-bags The use of poles will be forbidden in certain zones along the route marked by specific signs, for noise, safety or environmental reasons
LIVETRAIL
LIVETRAIL APP
The LiveTrail app is used to monitor the progress of the races and provides you with valuable race information. The app can also be used on your phone to alert the organisers if you need emergency medical assistance
In the event of an emergency, the LiveTrail app allows you to send directly to the organisers a SOS notification via your phone’s data signal. This gives your precise GPS position along the course so your phone can be located.
If you get into difficulty and need medical or immediate assistance, you must call the Event Control emergency number and make us aware of your situation.
It is mandatory to have a functioning, fullycharged mobile phone with data included while in the race
Under no circumstances should you put your mobile phone in airplane mode We need to be able to contact you before, during and after your race
For participants who will likely spend more than 15 hours on the course (i e Arc 100 participants), you are advised to bring an additional external battery pack to keep your phone charged
Check your emergency contact details you provided with your registration is the person you want to be alerted if you are involved in a medical incident.
IMPORTANT : Please check your mobile phone number is correct in your MyUTMB account and your emergency contact person’s name and phone number are also correct . This could be vital if you are involved in a medical incident

To prevent the spreading of tree pests, diseases and harmful organisms through the coastal regions, we need all participants to take preventative measures before you travel. This applies to participants visiting from the UK and internationally You must arrive at the event with clean footwear, clothing and poles Thoroughly clean mud and dirt accumulated from previous running and training sessions from the soles of your shoes and tips of your poles
REDUCED PLASTIC AT AID STATIONS
To reduce unnecessary plastic waste there will be no single use plastic (such as cutlery, cups or bowls) available at aid stations You need to bring your own utensils if you wish to eat hot meals or drinks at the aid stations.
Littering is strictly forbidden. Participants must keep rubbish and wrappers (including gels, plastics, paper and organic waste) until they can deposit them responsibly in the bin at an aid station Participants will be issued with a small, reusable waste bag at registration to store all your waste items while on the trails
Please separate your rubbish at the aid stations so we can ensure the correct items are recycled Organic waste such as leftover bars, fruit skins etc should be disposed in the appropriate bins
Used singular batteries can be deposited at an aid station and we will recycle these for you.

LIVESTOCK AND ANIMALS
You are recommended to stay as far away from livestock as possible while passing through farmland. Do not interfere with, or attempt to touch, sheep, lambs or cattle. This if for the welfare of the animals and your own safety.
GATES, FENCES AND STILES
You must close all gates behind you. Even if another participant approaches, it is vital gates are closed. Land boundaries must only be crossed using gates or stiles. Do not climb over walls or fences as this can cause damage.
TOILET USE
Toilets are provided for you at all aid stations on the course, and at the race start and finish. We recommend you plan your toilet stops in advance to prevent needing the toilet while on the trail. If you have to go, all your waste must be collected and disposed of properly.
STAY ON WAYMARKED PATHS

ADVERSE WEATHER
Weather conditions in the UK can often change multiple times a day, with coastal and mountainous regions known for experiencing very quick alterations in temperature, wind speeds and visibility. These changes in weather conditions can significantly impact the ability for event organisers to host outdoor events safely
Hosting the Arc of Attrition in winter is not without risk High wind speeds and heavy rain can have an adverse impact on the safety of participants, volunteers and spectators involved in the event. January temperatures and extra wind-chill factors can create cold conditions along the exposed coastal trails Combined with the lack of cloud cover at night, temperatures can drop significantly within a few hours
We take the welfare of our participants, volunteers and spectators seriously Our Race Committee monitor the weather forecast prior to the event to ensure it is safe to continue. If there is suggestion the safety of participants, volunteers, or spectators is at risk, we may need to cancel the event or race(s) This would be in exceptional adverse weather conditions, or on advice of the Met Office (i e issued weather warnings).
Adverse weather can also impact the event in several other ways such as travel to the venues, regional flooding, unusable trails, or disruption to our supply chain. Should there be a need for essential alterations to the event or routes, these will be communicated to participants at the earliest opportunity
The Race Committee reserve the right to modify the routes, cut-off times, aid station locations or any other aspects of the event This may be necessary in situations of adverse weather Where possible, races will remain within the same UTMB race category to allocate the same number of Running Stones to finishers
If additional cold weather mandatory kit items are required, participants will receive a notification from the LiveTrail mobile app This decision will be communicated at least 24 hours before the race start
Therefore, it is essential you download the LiveTrail app to your mobile phone and your mobile phone number is correct on your MyUTMB profile Please ensure you have allowed notifications to be received
VOLUNTEER AT ARC 2026!
Hosting an event the size of Arc of Attrition wouldn’t be possible without the enthusiasm and energy of our incredible Arc Angel volunteers We will have over 300 volunteers at Arc in 2025 !
Whether our volunteers are helping participants at an aid station, awarding medals at the finish line, marking the routes, or driving participants back to Porthtowan, each one of our Arc Angels play an essential part in making Arc of Attrition a huge success. Participants have told us each year how valuable the volunteers were to their own personal event experience and race progress!
Volunteering is the perfect way to support the event and see the action which goes on behind the scenes. You get a unique and up-close experience of the races, the emotions of the participants, and the vibrant atmosphere witnessed at the variety of venues and locations along the course.
We’re always looking for more talented volunteers to join our Arc Angel team.
