Preparing, making sacrifices, smiling, suffering, laughing, going beyond your limits, taking time, sharing, wondering, telling stories. To take the start of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc is to choose emotion. The emotion of simple things, the emotion of sharing. For 19 years, the

The Mont-Blanc and its aura, the MontBlanc and its magic spell. Everything that a person can experience there. Each runner has their reason for coming here, each runner brings a spark. The Mont-Blanc, a magical summit. Choose to circumnavigate it, to draw its contours. Taste its appeal. Choose the race that suits us, the one that will shape our adventure and our emotions. At the finish line, magic and tears, memories and hugs. Some will tell you it’s a parenthesis, a unique moment. A moment when we find ourselves, when we reconnect to what is dear to us, what we had perhaps forgotten. Time, the relationship with others and with our inner self, the taste for effort and contemplation, a certain simplicity too. There are as many reasons as there are runners. Ten thousand perhaps. The UTMB® Mont-Blanc is an event aware of the world and of its stakes. Hosting 10 000 runners for an event implies a great responsibility. Transportation plans, noise pollution control, trail maintenance, waste reduction; these are just some of the eco-friendly measures carried out by the UTMB® Mont-Blanc. We implement these actions with all those involved in the event, to preserve the territory and so that each generation can find its place and blossom there. This is also what the UTMB® Mont-Blanc is all about, strong values and strong solidarity. What strikes you is this amount of energy. Welcoming each other. The time we give. The energy we devote to it. For ourselves, for others, for the pleasure of sharing and meeting. This is also our raison d’être. To give the opportunity to get together for just one week, to make three countries (France, Italy, Switzerland) and 18 municipalities live together for the time of an Givingevent.your time means working to promote territories, heritage, men and women, and writing history together.

The opening of registration is undeniably one of the most thrilling moments of each new edition of the UTMB® MontBlanc. The enthusiasm for the UTMB® races has grown so much over the years that the UTMB® organization had to create in 2008 an entry process governed by a system of qualifying points and a lottery. For those runners who gain entry into the races, this moment marks the beginning of the adventure. On January 26th at 10am, more than 22 000 runners from all over the world were waiting impatiently for the results to be published on the UTMB® website while only 10,000 places were available. This resulted in a number of 33 000 unique visitors to the digital platform on that same day.

The United States dethroned China and Japan, which had been in 5th and 6th place for several years. China disappears from the top 15 with only 90 applicants. North America is now ahead of Asia with 1,283 applicants. Please note that due to the number of applications, the draw is done by computer. It is done nation by nation and race by race.

2022 POSTER

It has become a ritual that comes with each new edition of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc. The presentation of the new poster announces the upcoming edition, which will be taking place at the end of August in Chamonix and in 18 host towns. After a 3-year collaboration with the Lyon-based designer, Matthieu Forichon, UTMB® Group has chosen to bring the artwork in-house to create its new Meet your Extraordinary visual identity.

« All those who participate in the UTMB® Mont-Blanc, whether amateurs or top athletes, bring their full spirit to the race. With portraits of four runners in the center of the poster - two elites and two amateurs - two men and two women, we wanted to convey this diversity of profiles, the feelings and motivations behind each entry. As for the Mont Blanc, it represents the pinnacle of the UTMB® World Series circuit and the four lines on its summit embody the 4 race categories leading up to it: 20K, 50K, 100K and 100M » , explain Sanna and Charlotte, the two graphic designers who created the poster. For the first time, the poster features the color codes of the new UTMB® World Series circuit, which includes the UTMB® Mont-Blanc, the venue for the circuit’s Finals starting in 2023: the OCC (50K), CCC® (100K) and UTMB® (100M) races. Runners participating in one of the UTMB® World Series races in 2022 will have the opportunity to collect Running Stones to use in the UTMB® Mont-Blanc 2023 lottery.

NEW FEATURES AND ALWAYS A LOT OF EMOTIONS : THE UTMB® MONT-BLANC POSTER

« It is always a pleasure to reveal the poster of the year which we will use for our local, digital and print communication. For UTMB® Group as well as for the partners and the host territories, it definitely marks the beginning of the adventure from an operational standpoint. With less than 4 months left until the event, our team is fully dedicated to the staging of the 19th edition of the Sommet Mondial du Trail. We can’t wait to welcome the runners and reconnect with the emotions of the event » , says Isabelle Viseux Poletti, Event Director. The new graphic identity of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc and the UTMB® World Series was created last year, together with the MNSTR agency. The new codes and graphic elements were featured in the 2022 poster, which also highlighted the founding values and DNA of the event.

The ETC will take place in the heart of the Aosta Valley with a start and finish in the town of Courmayeur, which now hosts four race starts: the TDS®, on Tuesday, August 23 at midnight, the YCC on Tuesday, August 23 at 11:00 a.m, the ETC on Tuesday, August 23 at 2:00 p.m., and the CCC® on Friday, August 26 at 9:00

15 UTMB® MONT-BLANC - PRESS KIT 2022 THE UTMB® MONT-BLANC IS LAUNCHING A NEW RACE, THE ETC « EXPERIENCE TRAIL COURMAYEUR » ETC In 2018, the MCC was born, a 40km race open to local runners and volunteers. Four years later, the huge amount of success led the organization to launch a new format just as appealing and popular.

The ETC, for Experience Trail Courmayeur - a new 15km race with 1,300m of positive elevation gain -completes the UTMB® Mont-Blanc’s sports and experience offer.

With 15km and 1,300 meters of positive elevation gain around Courmayeur, the ETC is a trail challenge that gives a taste of the racing atmosphere in the heart of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc week. The course crosses the mountain pastures of Tirecorne and Suche, two magnificent natural terraces that will plunge the runners into the contemplation of the Mont-Blanc range. Participants will enjoy an amazing visual experience, with the route winding through the forests of spruces and larches. The winners of the race should complete the loop in an hour and thirty minutes and the time limit to cross the finish line is 4 hours. Making the most of the local flavor, runners will be invited to taste an authentic and well-deserved pizza at the finish line.

The UTMB® Mont-Blanc is an event including three ultra - endurance races (UTMB®, TDS®, CCC®), two medium formats (OCC, MCC), a new shorter race, ETC (15km), a race for the younger runners (YCC) and a great team adventure (PTL®). Not to mention the «minis» in Chamonix, Courmayeur, Trient and Champex- Lac which gather more than a thousand children from 3 to 13 years old. These 8 events animate eighteen towns around Mont - Blanc, in three different countries, throughout a week. Seven events and so many events: press conferences, starts and finishes, the Ultra -Trail® Village, concerts and typical meals are on the program between August 22nd and 28th 2022.

26 A GATHERING OF HUMAN BEINGS STORIES

From the top of its 4,810 m, the giant of the Alps do minates each bend of the paths and imposes upon each panorama… The Tour du Mont - Blanc is an exceptional route which owes its reputation to the surprising variety and beauty of its unrivalled lands Duringcapes. the race, the immersion in the heart of the fo rests, peaks and glaciers is a plunge into an incom parable universe where the magic of the panoramas carries the runners, seized by the stunning beauty of the journey. It is indeed a journey through three countries - France, Italy and Switzerland - united around this fascinating massif. «A human and sporting event, a race which respects the values of the mountains, a meeting with the populations of our valleys, beyond borders, the UTMB® Mont-Blanc is an event which is one of Chamonix’s absolute highlights.» Éric Fournier, Mayor of Chamonix and runner A MYTHICAL ROUTE AT THE HEART OF THE MONT- BLANC REGION…

-

There are professional runners and thousands of re gular runners, and they all stand together on the star ting line. They share the same trails, the same route Each runner at their own pace, but all together. Re sults aside, elite and amateur runners share the same race, the same fervor on the starting line. What a beautiful moment of solidarity when the last runner crosses the finishing line accompanied by the winners of the event. «In ultra-distance races, you know when you start but the finish line is sometimes hard to reach.» Sébastien Camus, (35th UTMB® 2019, 7th UTMB® 2016) AN FEAT WITHIN THE REACH OF EVERYBODY

27 UTMB® MONT-BLANC - PRESS KIT 2022

First of all, trail running is an opportunity to meet with one’s inner self and challenge one’s body and soul at the same time. How will the runner react to running such a distance ? Is the runner mentally and physically strong enough? Will he, she be a finisher ? The answer to this question also depends on the presence of other runners, coming to take part to this extraordinary adventure. At the night, during the one hour or so spent running together, it is possible to forge a connection of friendship and solidarity with strangers that may last for a lifetime. The fans’ enthusiasm, countless vo lunteers, local communities from both sides of the massif also participate in the beauty of the moment: they give their time and their warmth that can be perceived from their greetings and encouragements. «As well as knowing how to heal, it is necessary to know how to listen, advise, cheer and also comfort in the case of an abandonment. When I find out that we have helped a runner to cross the finishing line we share their joy and happiness.»

UTMB® MONT-BLANC: A REVELATION

28

For him, participating in the UTMB® Mont-Blanc is a kind of intimate meeting with himself. It is a way to express his intimate fidelity to the mountains and to Chamonix. He is hardly tempted by any other races than these.

Every year, 10,000 runners gather at the foot of the Mont-Blanc massif to share an exceptional sporting and human adventure. For these men and women from all over the world, the UTMB® Mont-Blanc is more than just a race. Behind each participant, there is a story that makes sense to them and that motivates them. Whether they are philosophers, singers, former high-level hockey players or event professionals, they all have a good reason take part in the UTMB® Mont-Blanc.

EXPRESSING LOYALTY TO THE MOUNTAIN

ATYPICAL PERSONALITIES

He attended by chance to Marco Olmo’s second victory in 2007, and this show literally upset him, like a revelation: this mixture of endurance, running, mountain and outdoors corresponded exactly to what he had been dreaming of doing without ever having imagined it... ! The following year, he was on the starting line of the CCC®.

Physicist, specialized in the philosophy of physics, he spent a number of years studying the matter of time by comparing what philosophers think of it with what equations used in physics say.

THE UNUSUAL HEROES OF THE UTMB® MONT-BLANC STORIES

Etienne Klein, registered for OCC

In 2022, Xavier, who is 34 years old, will be participating in the UTMB® for the 11th time and like every year, he is excited to return to the event with a twinkle in his eye when he talks about it.

It was during a charity march from Geneva to Chamonix to climb Mont-Blanc that he crossed paths with the UTMB® Mont-Blanc runners. A memorable moment that inspired him and made him want to come back to the Alps to participate in the event at all costs. It took him two years of training and racing in the UK to gain the points necessary for his first participation in the UTMB® Mont-Blanc in 2017.

2022 FOR THE EMOTION

Stéphane has always loved outdoor sports and the mountains, but when his sister Catherine Poletti created the UTMB® Mont-Blanc, he was far from thinking of ever taking the start one day. In his mind, the sportsman of the family was the elder brother! A SOURCE OF EMOTIONS

Dave Pen, registered for UTMB® Musician Stéphane Causse began to play the violin at the age of 6. After studying at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, he joined the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Paris in 1991 at the age of 23, where he’s still playing with the same passion.

«What I love is the atmosphere, sharing with my family, the spectators, I miss it more than the competition itself. Having a smile on my face and being able to share that smile with others.».

A CHANCE MEETING WITH THE UTMB® MONT-BLANC

the singer of Archive and BirdPen, two groups that have performed numerous shows in France and Europe over the past 15 years. Next to his singing career, he runs, inspired by his father, who ran a marathon in less than 3 hours.

Xavier Thévenard, registered for UTMB®

The ups and downs of life led him to practice running more and more intensively, as a kind of meditation, and at the same time as a source of strong and beneficial emotions. Step by step, he managed to reach his goal: to run the UTMB® 2019, after having run the OCC, the CCC® and the TDS® (which he is going to run again this year to get to know the new course).

CARRIED AWAY BY THE MOUNTAINS After participating in the UTMB® and TDS®, he gained experience, strengthened his endurance and boosted his mental strength. All good ingredients to improve his performance on the 2019 UTMB®. During the race, he feels «carried awaybythebeautyofthelandscapestheenergyoftheearthandthemountains».

AN ICONIC RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT

Stéphane Causse, registered for TDS® Xavier started running at the age of seven, taking advantage of long-distance races to train for cross-country skiing and biathlon. In 2010, at the age of 22, he entered a 100km trail race near his home, the CCC® and the rest, as they say, is history.

The following year, Xavier won the CCC®, although he did not expect such a result. This victory made him realize that he could perhaps do more and attempt the long version, the UTMB®, which he had dreamed of since his teenageyears while training with his friends in the Chamonix valley. After a successful first attempt in 2013, he is now a three-time winner of the UTMB®, a feat that has rightly earned him iconic status among the trail running community.

It’s a commitment that the organization took on since its beginnings. Crossing 3 countries, 18 municipalities, gathering 10,000 runners and 100,000 spectators means being aware of the impact on the environment. A unique event, an exceptional commitment...

UTMB® MONT-BLANC, A RESPONSIBLE AND COMMITTED EVENT BEYOND SPORT

Beyond the sporting aspect, the UTMB® Mont-Blanc is part of a unique and amazing territory. With each new edition, the organizing team looks to innovate and to undertake concrete actions towards the municipalities crossed, runners, spectators, and all Friends of the UTMB®. That is to ensure that this great celebration of trail running remains a moment of sharing and emotions, so that the UTMB® Mont-Blanc can last in time while respecting its sublime playground.

32

And this is bearing fruit: the event is now one of the 50 major international sporting events to have been invited by the Ministry of Sports and WWF France to sign the charter of eco-responsible events. Environment, solidarity and safety are the 3 main pillars which make the UTMB® Mont-Blanc a sustainable and ecofriendly event, an event that is part of society.

In July 2020, UTMB® announces the launch of UTMB® for the Planet, a digital event to mobilize the community around a solidarity cause. UTMB® is offering 4 virtual races based on the event’s main distances: UTMB® Virtual 50, UTMB® Virtual 100, UTMB® Virtual 170, UTMB® Virtual 240. Participation in one of the UTMB® for the Planet virtual races is free, but runners are invited to makea donation of their choice at the time of registration to support the projects of WWF France. Through UTMB® for the Planet, the runners and the organization have chosen to support WWF France with 45,000 euros. The funds raised will be used primarily to finance two WWF France programs, namely the Alpine ecosystem preservation program and the Boreal Lynx preservation program.

A personal goblet is compulsory for all runners, as well as a rubbish bag. Environment ambassadors ensure the cleaning of trails, no disposable utensils are used at aid station. These are all measures taken to preserve the environment in which the UTMB® Mont-Blanc races take Here’splace.

RESPONSIBILITYMUSTRUNNERSTAKE

• Signposting: in order to better understand the natu ral environment that runners are crossing, the UTMB® Mont-Blanc organization has created a specific sign-posting system for the most endangered zones.

• Special transportation network for crews and spec tators: UTMB® Mont-Blanc organization has imple mented, in collaboration with the main three cross-bor der operators (Transdev, ATR, TMR), an exceptional race follow-up system open to all supporters who wish to follow the runners around the Mont-Blanc. This transportation network (UTMB®BUS) is offered according to each race’s schedule and allows to arrive on time at each check point.

AN TRANSPORTATIONAMBITIOUS NETWORK FOR AN ECO-RESPONSIBLE EVENT In an effort to encourage everyone to share their vehicles, the UTMB® Mont- Blanc has put in place an extensive public transport system. Visitors can now easily access the existing public transport network, enhanced with special UTMB®BUS lines. This unique network can be used by runners, crews as well as spectators who wish to follow the races all around the Mont-Blanc in France, Italy and Switzerland.

• BYOU: The organization will not distribute any dispo sable cutlery, beakers/ cups or bowls at aid stations and refreshment points. Runners are asked to carry their own utensils.

• Special transportation network for runners: this service allows runners to get to the start of the 4 races in Italy and Switzerland: MCC, TDS®, OCC and CCC®. In ad dition, the organization offers a solution for all runners who wish to get to the start of their race without using their personal vehicle.

• Actions to raise awareness during the races: runners meet ‘environment ambassadors’ whose mission is to help them protecting the environment (waste sorting, trail cleaning).

«Runners wearing a solidarity race bib want to give another dimension to their challenge. They always tell us that it is very difficult for them to withdraw from the race. They usually go much further than they would have done if they had not taken this kind of bib. In their minds, these sick people do not give up their struggle, so neither do they.» - Marie J. The organization’s inner mountain culture generates the desire to help others win their own battles: to overcome a difficult time, to fight a disease, to help children grow up and be happy.

11 ASSOCIATIONS SUPPORTED THANKS TO 160 SOLIDARITY BIBS As a reminder that participating in a trail running race is a privilege, the UTMB® has developed the solidarity bibs system to collect funds for charitable associations. Thanks to these 160 bibs (2000€ each) the 11 associations selected by the solidarity committee of the association «Les Trailers du Mont-Blanc» get to receive 320 000€.

For the 2021 edition, €30,491 was thus collected and has just been donated in equal shares to 4 associations. This action is carried out by the Trailers du Mont Blanc Solidarity Commission, which chooses the associations and maintains close ties with them. These are all located on the Mont-Blanc territory crossed by the UTMB® Mont-Blanc races.

36 SAFETY OF ALL PARTICIPANTS, OUR MAIN PRIORITY BEYOND SPORT The UTMB® Mont-Blanc races take place in the mountains, at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,600m, far from networks (roads, telecommunications…) with weather conditions which can change very fast even at the end of August (snow, hail, fog, heat (>30°) or intense cold (< 10°) with strong wind. The security of all runners in all the UTMB® races is based on 4 pillars: an important logistical organization, developments in the digital field, the consistency of the mandatory equipment and the choice of the route.

CONSISTENCY OF THE MANDATORY EQUIPMENT

THEGUARANTEEINGFORMATOF THE RACES

The mandatory equipment is essential when it comes to safety. In 2018, the UTMB® Mont-Blanc organization added to the mandatory equipment checklist the heat wave and winter ‘kits’. That means that runners must be equipped to face very changeable, and at times hostile, weather conditions. Actually, despite the difficult weather conditions in 2017 (snow, rain, cold and wind), the number of finishers was a distinct improvement compared to 2016. The percentage of those abandoning in 2017 was 24% against 35% in 2016. In the last few years, the number of withdrawn has stabilized at around 23.5% of the starters (22% in 2018 and 25% in 2019). These figures demonstrate the importance of the mandatory equipment for runner’s safety during their adventure. This is why, to further enhance runners’s safety in 2018 the organization implemented three kits (heat wave, very cold and bad weather). The kits may be required, according to the weather conditions, and added to the mandatory gear checklist. The complete checklist can be found here : www.utmbmontblanc.com

For supervising, keeping an eye on and rescuing runners in the different races during the week, the organizers mobilize 150 first aiders, 65 nurses and 35 doctors, as well as a private helicopter. 53 check points are installed along the routes, 120 radio sets equip the health staff and 60 computers follow «step by step» 10,000 runners committed to one of the event’s races. In 2018, the organization offered special training for its medical and paramedical volunteers on: «managing vital emergencies during medical inventions at outdoor sporting events».

250 HEALTH PERSONALS MOBILIZED

Each year, the stakes are high: depending on the weather conditions; it is necessary to ensure that each race takes place as close as possible to its original itinerary possibly using variants or choosing to activate alternative routes. In order to do this, every year these variants, as well as the alternative routes, are planned before the event. With 4 seasons experienced during the 2017 event, the organization had to use some of these variants. Heatwave during the TDS®, autumn monsoon during the OCC and winter conditions during the CCC® and UTMB®: the weather tested the adaptability of the race directors. This was in particular the case for the UTMB® where the snow and wind at high altitudes gave a glimpse of the possibility of using an alternative Byroute.avoiding the Pyramides Calcaires and the Tête aux Vents in order not to expose runners to bad weather coditions unnecessarily to these passages which are not interesting in bad weather, the route was changed by using variants but without using alternative routes.

37 UTMB® MONT-BLANC - PRESS KIT 2022

The 2300 participants were able to set out on a route which was slightly shortened (166.9 km using alternative routes but which maintained the spirit of the race and its difficulty.

• Inform the race committee about the material and human logistics to be set up according to the weather conditions. For example, define the type of rescue means depending on the areas where runners may be located

During the event, the weather forecast is used by the race command center to:

WEATHER, A KEY FACTOR FOR SAFETY BEYOND SPORT

• Annnounce the list of mandatory equipment that runners must take with them (basic kit, hot weather kit or cold weather kit)

38

During the UTMB® Mont-Blanc, the weather is a crucial factor for all those who participate in the event: runners, volunteers, organizers, supporters and journalists, they all are directly affected by the weather conditions. To manage this naturally unstable element, UTMB® MontBlanc organizers have learned to deal with the weather so that runners can march safely and start their race with the right equipment.

• Confirm the starting time of each race and validate the courses

In addition to these predictive analyses, the organization has adopted weather criteria that should not be exceeded. There are temperature, wind speed, rain, snow and thunderstorms thresholds that should not be exceeded to ensure the safety of runners. From a sporting point of view, the use of these weather forecasts contributes to improve runners’ performance: the number of Finishers has risen from 10% during the first edition of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc to 88% for all races in 2018. The good anticipation of weather conditions allows runners to be better equipped during the race, thus increasing their chances of crossing the finish line.

To do this, several meteorologists take turns during the event to ensure permanent monitoring and contact with the teams in the field. The organization cross-references these forecasts with real-time data taking into account, for example, where runners are located and thus anticipating several potential race scenarios.

• Anticpate potential crisis that could occur IF the schedule and the route of the event have to be changed because of the weather

UTMB® MONT-BLANC - PRESS KIT 2022

The number of participants is limited in order to maintain high quality level of organization (fluidity and safety). In 2007 registration for the UTMB® was completed in 10 hours and in one day for the CCC®. To adapt to an increasing number of appli cations, organizers came up with a pre registration system in 2009, followed by a lottery, which has since then been used each year.

HISTORY

THE BIRTH OF THE UTMB® MONT-BLANC

LOTTERY: THE FAIR CHOICE

40

A FORCEFUL INNOVATIVE SPIRIT Already a pioneer in the field of ultra - endurance events, the UTMB® Mont-Blanc organization has always showed greatest concern for constant improvement since the first Comingedition. up with new proposals and ideas feeds a deep motivation to further develop and structure trail - running.

Once the event was registered as the «International Ultra Trail of the tour du Mont Blanc» on international internet calendars in 2002, organizers cherished the hope of gathering 300 participants. With a success far above expectations, management difficulties after the sign up of 500 participants... In 2003, for the first edition 711 trailers of 19 nationalities are on the starting line. only three years later, in 2006, 3,400 applications were registered and 2,500 runners found themselves on the starting line. In three years, the number of runners has tripled! From an original race, the event now offers 7 events that each have their raison d’être.

A RACE OPEN TO INNOVATION

At the beginning of the 2000s Trail Running only attracted a few enthusiasts. In Chamonix, a group of nine friends dreamt of running the Tour of Mont - Blanc from Chamonix, a journey across three countries (France Italy and Switzerland), without ever looking back or turning around, until they would return to Chamonix!

HISTORICAL

RUNNING FOR POINTS: WHEN EXPERIENCE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE As much to control the number of registration requests as to guarantee runners’ rom 2007, it was necessary to finish 2 races of 50km or 1 race of 80km. In 2009 this proof of experience was transformed into qualifying points which had to be obtained by running other races during the 2 years preceding the race. From the 4 necessary points in 2009, 5 were required in 2011, 7 in 2013, 8 in 2015, 9 for 2016, then 10 until 2022. Today, the UTMB® has redesigned its qualification model with the creation of the UTMB® World Series circuit and the introduction of the Running Stones. For more information, visit www.utmb.world

The UTMB® TV in 6 languages (French, English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Thai) and the development of the interface UTMB® Live (2017) has made it possible to follow the races live, whatever the distance.

41 UTMB® MONT-BLANC - PRESS KIT 2022

The subject of health has also seen the implementation of a health policy in partnership with Athletes for Transparency and the ITRA. Since 2018, each runner is invited to create their own health page to help to improve their medical care during the event.

ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH: A CHOICE OF ACTIONS

After an epic race (2010) the list of mandatory equipment was updated with the introduction of specific gear adapted for mountain use. In particular a mountain jacket with a hood is required, which has completely modified the brands’ spring and summer collections, which previously only had this type of clothing (too heavy) in their winter collections and random checks became a regular procedure during the race. At the same time, manufacturers hurried to produce a summer version of a water proof jacket with a hood. In 2017, the 4 seasons invited themselves to the UTMB® Mont-Blanc. Summer for the TDS® (>30°C), autumn for the OCC and a period of severe cold for the CCC® and UTMB®. So as always to be as near as possible to the reality on the ground and avoid unnecessarily overloading runners, the organization has put 3 kits in place according to the weather conditions and the different races: the first for heatwaves (UTMB® TDS® CCC® OCC MCC), the second for very cold conditions (UTMB® TDS® CCC®) and the third to confront bad weather (OCC ListMCC).can be found www.utmbmontblanc.comhere:

MANDATORY EQUIPMENT: AUTONOMY INVOLVED

The environment, health and security are the key pillars for the UTMB® MontBlanc’s development. Since 2006, the Commission for the Environment has identified the risks engendered by the event, and it proposes concrete actions preserving nature and the mountains. Mandatory personal beaker, rubbish pouch, ambassadors of the environment, pubblic transportation networks open to any fans and volunteers, are a few of the measures that have been taken to preserve the UTMB® ’s playground. In 2018, the organization pushed its actions even further by imposing the BYOU (inaugurated by the Vibram HK100 organizers) : «Bring Your own Utensils» not an obligation, but the information that all those who wish to have access to hot food (soup, pasta...) must have their own bowl because no disposable bowls will be provided at any aid station. In 2007, a Medical Commission was set up. It turned out that the UTMB® races are a great natural laboratory for medical studies and surveys organized by the volunteer doctors. As well as being responsible for validating research projects, the Commission is asked to suggest treatments for the pathologies that the runners may encounter.

Moreover, to answer the expectations of the audience, it is possible to follow the race from the 4 corners of the planet.

COMMUNICATION: AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO THE GROUND AND BEYOND BORDERS By implementing numerous actions in the field of communications, the UTMB® Mont-Blanc was a pioneer in giving both local and international media coverage to the event.. Apps for smartphones (2016), webcams (2014) and SMS text messaging, the organization has set up numerous tools for supporters to follow up the race.

For this first year, runners may choose to stop the race and be classified at Courmayeur, Champex, or push on to Chamonix. In epic conditions (rain, cold and hail), the nepalese Dawa Sherpa and the American Krissy Moehl are winners of the complete tour which only 67 runners manage to complete.

2004 Delebarre on his own Vincent Delebarre is the new winner of the UTMB®. He gives the Chamonix Valley the pleasure of seeing a “local boy” on the highest step. He becomes the Valley’s running club’s first trainer and introduces the pleasures of trail running to numerous members. The Swiss woman Colette Borcard adds the UTMB® to her list of wins.

HISTORY

42

2006 4th UTMB® and... 1st CCC® After a perfect management of his race which left him kilometres in the lead, the victory of the Italian, Marco Olmo, made an impression because of his age (58). One could think therefore that this is a sport reserved for the “over 40s”. As for the women, it was the French lady, Karine Herry, who won after a great race. Meanwhile, for the first CCC® Corinne Favre stole the title for 1st woman and 1st overall.

2007 The madness of Mermoud In the lead until la Fouly… Nicolas Mermoud let go of the reins after Champex and Marco Olmo’s inexorable regularity gave him, at 59, his second UTMB® victory. As for the women, Nikki Kimball is the second American to take the title of the event which is so different from those organised at the other side of the ocean. In the CCC® we see the 1st places on the podium being taken by Julien Chorier (FR) and Andrea Ursina (CH).

2005 The pioneers One of the male trail running personality at the time, the Swiss Christophe Jacquerod wins the third edition, following in the footsteps of the winners of the first 2 editions. For the women, the British Elisabeth Hawker steps on stage and still holds the record in the number of podiums in all categories (6) for the Ultra -Trail du Mont - Blanc®.

Once again excruciating weather creates epic conditions (snow, cold, hail...) without hope of improving. An alternative route in France is organised during Thursday night (110km with 5,600m ascent). It is almost night when the pack set out and it is still night when François D’Haene (FR) crosses the finishing line in Chamonix. Less than 2 hours later, another victory for Lizzy Hawker. The CCC® takes place in extremely rough conditions and sees victories for Tofol Castaner Bernat (ESP) with 42 minutes advance on his adversary and Ellie Greenwood (UK). In the TDS®, the victories were for Dawa Sherpa (NEP) and Agnès Hervé (FR).

UTMB® MONT-BLANC - PRESS KIT 2022 43

2010 Capricious weather conditions

2008 The young takes the lead At just 20 years old, the youngest registered for the UTMB®, Kilian Jornet (ESP), wins the event after escaping from everybody at Les Contamines and opens the world to the young runners. Lizzy Hawker climbs for the second time on to the top step of the podium. In the CCC® Guillaume Lenormand (FR) and Lucie Colquoun (GB) occupy the first places.

It is not yet raining when the runners set off at 18:30... But the disturbance is evolving faster than expected: torrents overflowing, falling rocks make the mountain impassable. The race is stopped. After a second start the next day from Courmayeur, the winning duo is British: Jezz Bragg and Lizzy Hawker. Xavier Thévenard and Maud Giraud dominate the CCC®. The TDS® is cancelled.

Stormy weather conditions (again) leave organizers with no other choice but a delayed start at 23:00 and a resulting longer race. At mid way the race leaders: 3 Spanish Jornet, Karrera and Heras, and Sébastien Chaigneau from the Haute Savoie, are not going to let go until Martigny. Kilian escapes to pass the the finishing line alone. For the women, «Queen» Elisabeth Hawker has her fourth victory while in the CCC® Emmanuel Gault and Virginie Covignon (FR) celebrate. The TDS® is won by Franck Bussière (FR) and Jolanda Linschooten (NL).

2012 The accessconditionsweather“forbid”toItaly

2009 An additional race, the TDS® This year is marked by record temperatures (28° to 30°C). Everybody waits to see Kilian Jornet who confirms his domination and easily takes possession of the top step. For her second participation, a second victory for Krissy Moehl. The CCC® allows the Swiss Jean -Yves Rey and the French Chantal Bègue to share the top of the podium. Patrick Bohard (FR) and Fernanda Maciel (ESP) win the first TDS®.

2011 Relentless conditions…weather

2013 A wind of renewal Exceptional weather conditions played in favour of Jura - born Xavier Thévenard, and the Californian, Rory Bosio, who both showed stunning performances, and beat the very long odds on the UTMB® while terrifying the stop watches. Xavier confirmed his exceptional talents and stands out on his first attempt at UTMB®, while Rory becomes the first woman to make the complete tour in less than 23 hours. Catalonia and Spain celebrate the victories of Jordi Bes (CCC®), and Arnaud Julia Bonmati (TDS®) .The French girls Caroline Chaverot (CCC®) and Nathalie Mauclair (TDS®) confirm an exceptional 2013 season.

2015 Scorching weather Xavier Thévenard (FR) took his fourth victory at the event, his second for the UTMB®. Nathalie Mauclair (FR), the world champion was on the top step of the women’s podium. As for the CCC®, it was the American, Zach Miller, who was on the top step alongside the new Zealander, Ruth Charlotte Croft. After having won the CCC® in 2014, the Spaniard Pau Bartolo was the winner of the 2015 TDS®, while the Swiss Andrea Huser won for the women. In the OCC, in which the world champion Sylvain Court participated, the victory went to Marc Pinsach Rubirola (ES) 3rd the year before, while Celia Chiron (FR), first participation in the event was 1st placed first for the women. The PTL®, after a serious drenching at the beginning of the race, was run under blue skies with temperatures varying between 28° and 33°. The thermometer dropped very little at night. Only 17 teams out of the 115 registered will be Finishers.

44 HISTORY

2014 The birth of the little Helvetic sister Rain and sunshine, the ingredients of an excellent “vintage”. François D’Haene (FR) and the American Rory Bosio cross, for the second time, the UTMB® finishing line in Chamonix as victors. The TDS® lets Xavier Thévenard have the success of a trio of wins climbing to the top step of the podium having conquered those of the CCC® (2010) then the UTMB® (2013), while Teresa Nimes Perez (ESP) claims the women’s 1st place. The CCC® sees Pau Bartolo (ESP) and Anne Lise Rousset (FR) claiming their 1st places. As for the first year of the OCC, with an impressive line up of athletes, is marked by the victories Nicolas Martin (FR) and Sonia Glarey (IT) of the Courmayeur Trailers.

2016 A stifling event, with twists and turns! The UTMB® offered an incredible race scenario. The victory, was indecisive right up until the end, eventually going to Ludovic Pommeret (FRA) who realised a heroic race, gaining one of his most resounding successes.

Same suspens in the women’s race where Caroline Chaverot (FRA) and Andrea Huser (CH) fought for the lead for more than 25 hours. Michel Lanne won the CCC® realising one his dearest objectives, while for the women, Sweden revealed a new athlete, Mimmi Kotka. Under the generous sunshine, the Spaniard Pau Capell won the TDS®, outstripping another Iberian, Yeray Duran. Delphine Avenier, a local runner, had the advantage on the American Meredith Edwards. By gaining the victory of the OCC, with quarter of an hour in advance of his pursuer, Xavier Thévenard (FR) is the first runner to have a victory four 4 of the UTMB® events. The Spaniard Mercedes Arcos was 1st woman.

The UTMB® Mont-Blanc races were to bring the best ultra trail runners, of the moment, into conflict in capricious weather conditions which went from those of summer to those of winter. In the key race, it was an as high caliber line - up as ever, with in particular, the long - awaited duel between the leaders in the discipline, François D’ Haene and Kilian Jornet, which captivated the public. On the women’s side, Nuria Picas finally won the UTMB®, after two second places in 2013 and 2014. Andrea Huser, who finally lacked less than three minutes to connect with Picas, had to, again, settle for a second place. The real surprise came from the French girl Christelle Bard, 3rd in the event, after a very well managed second half of the race. only the majority of the TDS® competitors were able to benefit from clement weather, with the heat of summer and radiant sunshine. Radiant, like Michel Lanne and Mimmi Kotka’s smiles on the finishing line. A few hours later the Swiss Marc Lauenstein and the surprising Spaniard Eli Gordon Rodriguez succeeded them over the waterlogged, festive and more populated than ever finishing line, winning the 2017 OCC. On Friday evening, the CCC® delivered its verdict, by dedicating it to a promising American duet, with the supersonic Hayden Hawks and Clare Gallagher.

2017 Match of titans around the Mont-Blanc

For the 16th edition of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc, an impressive number of elite athletes at the starting line is ready to turn the race into magnificent battle. Kilian Jornet, Jim Walmsley, Tim Tollefson and Xavier Thévenard are favorited to win. However, this prediction didn’t take into account the many twists and turns in the race. Jim Walmsley, who started very fast, gradually slows down his pace. As for Kilian Jornet, stung by a wasp three hours before the start, he has an allergic reaction that forces him to abandon the race. The other favorited to win, Alberto Hernandez, Sylvain Court, Benoît Cori, Tim Tollefson, also decide to withdraw from the competition.

45 UTMB® MONT-BLANC - PRESS KIT 2022

Xavier Thévenard, an experienced ultra-marathon runner, perfectly manages his pace to win and to get himself his «third star». Romanian Robert Hajnal beats all the odds and confirms his second place in 21h31, ahead of Spaniard Jordi Gamito. Women elite athletes face the same destiny. The favorited to win abandon the race, the experienced underdogs get to the party. The Italian Francesca Canepa (1st), the Spaniard Uxue Fraile (2nd) and the French Jocelyne Pauly (3rd) share the podium. As for the other races, a new generation of champions is emerging. Erenjia Jia won the OCC, becoming the first Chinese to write his name in a UTMB® race. Miao Yao imitated him the next day by winning the CCC® in the women’s event, while his partner Min Qi finished second in the men’s event. The Eastern Europeans are the other main characters of the week: on Thursday, Marcin Swierc from Poland wins the TDS®, while Dmitry Mityaev of Russia gets the third place on the podium.

2018 Thevenard joins D’Haene and Jornet in the hall of fame

The Spaniard Andreu Simon Aymerich got the second place. The young Chinese Luo Tao completes the podium, 6 minutes behind Angermund-Vik. New Zealand’s Ruth Croft confirmed her domination of this race by winning in 05h50, a feat she had already achieved in 2018. Spain’s Azara García De Los Salmones finished 2nd and Japan’s Yuri Yoshizumi 3rd. In the main race, Pau Capell triumphed by achieving the perfect race, alone from start to finish. The risk was very high but the strategy paid off. Xavier Thévenard, who also completed a perfectly controlled race, as usual, finished 2nd within the timing he had planned. New Zealander Scott Hawker completed the podium with the biggest performance of his career. In the women’s category, the impressive American Courtney Dauwalter won the race, finishing 21st in the overall ranking. The Swedish Kristin Berglund takes the 2nd place and the Spanish Maite Maiora Elizondo the 3rd place.

46 HISTORY 2019 « Mighty » Spain 2020 Cancellation of the event due to the coronavirus pandemic Spain left its mark on this 17th edition of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc. All that was missing was a Spanish victory on the OCC for the men’s Grand Schlem. Pablo Villa won the new TDS®, followed by Dmitry Mityaev and Ludovic Pommeret, who once again made an exceptional comeback in thesecond half of the race. In the women’s race, Audrey Tanguy won the TDS® for the second year in a row. The imperturbable American Hillary Allen and the Swiss Kathrin Götz completed the podium. Luis Alberto Hernando took the CCC®, and finished ten minutes ahead of Thibaut Garrivier, who put in a very good performance. On the women’s side, the Dutch Ragna Debats won, followed by Amanda Basham and the French Camille Bruyas. On the shorter but demanding OCC course, the very consistent Norwegian Stian Angermund-Vik won in 05:19.

The organization team of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc announces that due to the pandemic of COVID-19, the 2020 edition will not take place. The organization wishes to preserve the health and safety of all participants.

2021 There were many emotional moments on this UTMB® Mont-Blanc 2021. Memories too. Starting with the PTL® and its departure from Switzerland for the modern-day heroes who came to experience the adventure of a lifetime with their fellow climbers

47 UTMB® MONT-BLANC - PRESS KIT 2022

There was sadness too. On Tuesday night, the TDS® was in mourning, and with it the entire trail running family. Its winners were nonetheless celebrated, rising to the occasion of their performance: the Frenchwoman Manon Bohard and the Norwegian Erik-Sebastian Krogvig. The start of the OCC lifted the spirits of the runners and spectators, with its exceptional line-up and the good weather holding up. In the end, two champions won for the first time on this race, the French Blandine L’Hirondel and the British Jonathan Albon, two discreet and endearing runners. This was followed by the presentation of the elites and the tension was palpable around the main race, the UTMB®, announced the following day. Before that, it was the turn of the CCC® to occupy centre stage. Back from an injury, Thibaut Garrivier ran a perfect race and raised his arms in victory after 10 hours and 23 minutes of effort, accompanied by the Spaniard Marta Molist Codina. On Friday and the start of the UTMB®, emotions were running high and a special tribute was paid to the deceased Czech runner. François D’Haene was the main favourite and won the race to become the most successful runner of the event ahead of Kilian Jornet, with 4 victories. Courtney Dauwalter delivered a brilliant performance. Following her win in 2019, she repeated with ease to finish 7th overall and set the new record for the women’s race in 22 hours and 30 minutes. An extraordinary performance set in stone here in Chamonix.

There was also a good deal of emotional moments on the MCC with its 1,000 runners from the valley, partners, volunteers and members of the organisation. The explorer Mike Horn also came to have a go at trail running with his daughters. On the YCC, the enthusiasm of the runners in the making thrilled the families who came to cheer them on, and the onlookers who came to enjoy the festive and friendly atmosphere. Congratulations to Lilian Burnet Vernier and Chiara Tramontana for their victory.

RUNNERS REVEALED BY THE UTMB® MONT-BLANC

The Sommet Mondial du Trail with its 4 historic races (UTMB®, TDS®, CCC®, OCC) is where talent can express itself and where only the best can win. These mythical races, on the ridges of the roof of Europe, are fascinating due to the emotions and competition they arouse.

Francesca Canepa (IT) After finishing 2nd in the 2012 UTMB®, the Italian runner added to her already impressive list of achievements the victory on the 2018 UTMB®.

Robert Hajnal (RO) Robert Hajnal introduced himself to the audience at the 2018 UTMB® by taking an unexpected 2nd place. The Romanian waited for most of the favourites to give in to the demanding conditions of this edition to place himself in the leading group and finish on the podium.

HISTORY

Tim Tollefson (US) After a remarkable finish in the CCC® the first time he participated (2015), Tim was over the moon the following year with a third place in the UTMB®. A fan of the event, he returned in 2017 and produced an incredible performance finishing in third place behind Kilian and François. Miao Yao (CN) Only 23 years old, the young Chinese won with a crazy panache on the 2018 edition of the CCC®. She finished the 11th overall and set the new record for the event (11.57 h). Min QI (CN) From Yunnan, Min Qi run a great CCC®. Second on the finish line, he waits for his partner Miao Yao, for a photo on the finishing line that will make them known to the general public. Marcin Swierc (PL) The Polish runner had already shown the full extent of his talent in 2017 by finishing second in the CCC®. One year later, he won the TDS® in a record time (13h24) defeating some big talented runners.

52

Xavier Thévenard (FR) He embodies the popular enthusiasm for trailrunning and he’s the only athlete to have won the four UTMB® races (2013, 2015, 2018), CCC® (2010), TDS® (2014) and OCC (2016) Elisabeth Hawker (UK) Trail-runner apart, recognized by everybody: she is the only athlete to have won the UTMB® five times. Rory Bosio (US) The only women to have been in the overall first 10 of the UTMB® with her 7th position in the general ranking in 2013. She brings a «New Age» side to trailrunning. François D’haene (FR) In 2014, he confirmed that he is one of the best Ultra-Trail runners in the world by winning his second UTMB®. 2017 is the year of consecration for François who wins the most competitive UTMB® in front of a certain Kilian Jornet. Caroline Chaverot (FR) She won everything in 2016 (UTWT®, IAU World Trail Championships). Her victory in the UTMB® (20th scratch) gave her the recognition of the general public..

Pau Capell (ES) After a victory on the 2016 TDS® and a 3rd place on the 2018 CCC®, the Spaniard Pau Capell left his mark by winning the 2019 UTMB®. It was a race with a millimetre measured pace, with maximum risk-taking by covering the 171 kilometres alone from start to finish.

Mathieu Blanchard (FR) Having joined ultrarunning in 2017, Blanchard gained fast-track learning of longdistance running. «I can’t believe it,» he said at the finish line. «This podium on the UTMB® was a dream; I didn’t think it would happen so soon. I am on another planet!

The Valley also offers financial incentives to promote the conversion to gas heating systems thanks to the “Air Gas Fund” (in collaboration with GRDF), and the “Air Business Fund” encourages local craftsmen and companies to reduce their pollutant emissions by converting their working equipment and appliances. The local authorities are equally committed to the development of electric mobility (charging stations, electric sockets in car parks, partly electric municipal fleet) and soft mobility (bicycle lane under construction, fitting of bicycle racks).

All of these commitments and accomplishments have a clear purpose: to protect and preserve both natural heritage and local inhabitants!

The Community of Communes of the Chamonix Mont Blanc Valley is a strong contributor, both financially and logistically, to this sporting event which has become a global reference in the field of trail running.
