International Students at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley International students are an essential part of our community and culture at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). Your background, perspective, experiences, goals, and dreams strengthen our university as a whole and make everyone’s learning experience richer. We know you have a very distinct set of needs as an international student. From applying for admission to graduation requirements, our dedicated International Admissions and Student Services staff is here to provide you with the support, information and guidance you need throughout your study at UTRGV.


UTRGV Application Checklist To successfully complete your international application for admission to UTRGV, you will need to submit the following: International admission application International Freshman and International Transfer students need to submit the appropriate application through ApplyTexas.org (requires a $50 application fee). Some undergraduate programs also require an additional application for admission. International Graduate students need to complete the specific program application online at utrgv.edu/graduate (requires a $100 application fee). Official high school and/or college transcripts and transcript evaluation reports completed by Foreign Credential Services of America (FCSA) or World Education Services (WES)

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score Texas Success Initiative (TSI) exam score (necessary to register for classes and can be taken when you arrive on campus. Not for graduate student applicants.) ACT or SAT (for freshman applications) Have ACT or SAT scores submitted directly from the testing agency. The UTRGV school code is ACT 6991 and SAT 6568. For graduate programs, review the specific program to determine test requirements such as the GRE or GMAT.

Documents Required Upon Acceptance Copy of valid passport.

If applicable, for Mexican students only, submit the Mexican Tuition Waiver Form.

Notarized Affidavit of Financial Support. Bank statement showing sufficient financial support for one year of study and living expenses.

If applicable, proof of meningitis vaccine if under the age of 22.

Housing at UTRGV On-campus housing is available for UTRGV’s students in Brownsville and Edinburg. Living on campus provides you with an immediate network of fellow UTRGV students, a vast array of residence life programs designed to foster student engagement and support, as well as fun activities and events. For students who choose to live off campus, the cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley is among the most affordable in the country.

Paying for Your UTRGV Education

As an international student, you are eligible to apply for scholarships—

financial assistance that does not require repayment—to help offset

the cost of your UTRGV education. Student employment programs are

other forms of financial assistance for which you may qualify. Students

coming from Mexico may apply for the Mexican Tuition Waiver (MTW),

a program designed to offer the same in-state tuition rates as

residents of Texas.

International Student Orientation Orientation is important and is a requirement for all new students. At orientation, you will receive the information and support you need to help make your transition to UTRGV as smooth as possible. Orientation covers immigration rules and regulations, UTRGV academic requirements, healthcare, employment opportunities and much more.

Support Services for International Students Our top priority is to provide you with outstanding support services in an atmosphere that will make you feel at home. We host cultural events, which are wonderful opportunities for you to interact and make friends with students from all over the world. You can also join the International Student Organization and participate in exciting activities, volunteer opportunities in the community, service projects, trips, and social gatherings. We provide personalized support services at every step of your educational journey, and our doors are always open for you.
