Dr. Ricardo Romo President The University of Texas at San Antonio is proud to host the exhibition series New Art/Arte Nuevo in this fifth installment since 2008. Faculty and staff in the Department of Art and Art History are dedicated to encouraging creativity, scholarship, and compelling critical conversation on our campus and in circumstances far beyond our local geography. This biennial project provides opportunity for artists with a variety of connections to our city and region to share their recent work. Contemporary artists derive their inspiration from a range of contexts, reflections, and experiments. Often, they bring together art historical and cultural insight with skills and methods gained from years of dedication to their studio practices. Popular expectations of visual materials are increasingly sophisticated in many arenas today, so artists respond by grabbing our attention, challenging our presumptions, and offering us a break to re-direct our thoughts amid the demands of our daily lives. RICARDO ROMO President, The University of Texas at San Antonio

Gregory Elliott Department Chairperson New Art/Arte Nuevo allows UTSA to serve our broader community, showcasing the vitality of the diverse artists who work in or who have significant connections to the San Antonio area. Contemporary art, as an umbrella term, brings together a broad range of creative approaches relative to a host of concerns. Art historical legacies are respected by emerging artists and further transformed in the experimentation and professional careers of those whose roots extend beyond our local studios. The dedication of our artists produces energy far beyond our region. I am pleased that Kimberly Arp agreed to serve as juror for the current installment of this project. I had the pleasure of working with Kimberly for close to 15 years when we were both professors in the School of Art at Louisiana State University. In his printmaking, he often weaves together actual events with original storytelling. Kimberly brings his viewers into a mystical world through the dynamic presentation of his imagery. Our students at UTSA were inspired by his vision, generosity, and passion for printmaking during a 3-day workshop. I would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Scott Sherer, Art Historian and Director of the UTSA Art Gallery, who conceived of New Art/Arte Nuevo as a showcase for artists from our part of the world. Laura Crist, Gallery Coordinator for the UTSA Art Gallery, is a tireless problem solver of a broad array of details throughout the department. Vikky Jones, Graphic Designer, brings great expertise to the many visual resource needs of our faculty and students, including the production of our catalogs. John Hooper brings great skill and professionalism as our Gallery Preparator, handling all manner of installation details for diverse works across the rich disciplines. GREGORY ELLIOTT Chairperson and Professor Department of Art and Art History 3
Dr. Scott Sherer Gallery Director New Art/Arte Nuevo: San Antonio 2016 is a testament to the rich character of creative work in our city and region. The artists included present themes from social and cultural contexts, to personal stories that extend to broader conversations, as well as investigations of their own imaginations. Traditional materials and new methods often intermix in their work, and amid our busy lives, these artists encourage us to pause, reflect, and dream. Kimberly Arp had a difficult task in making selections among the many entries. His critical eye and appreciation for a wide variety of approaches reflect the years he has spent mentoring young artists as well as the dedication he has given to his own distinguished career.
New Art/ Arte Nuevo: San Antonio 2016 is made possible with the generous support from Texas Commission on the Arts; Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation of 1992; President Ricardo Romo and Dr. Harriett Romo; Dean Dan Gelo of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts; and Professor Gregory Elliott, Chairperson of the Department of Art and Art History. This exhibition would not be possible without Laura Crist, John Hooper, and Vikky Jones, who each contribute expertise, creativity, and dedication to all of our exhibitions and programs. SCOTT SHERER Gallery Director and Associate Professor Department of Art and Art History

Kimberly Arp Juror The works selected for the 2016 New Art/Arte Nuevo exhibition represent a cross-section of traditional, contemporary and experimental media which reflects a very wide variety of content and artistic intentions. The majority of the work submitted was content/narrative driven and reflected the individual artist’s personal vision. The scale and media of the works selected varied from a few inches in dimension to large-scale installations. The media of each piece was important only as it supported individual artistic content and vision and as it reflected craftsmanship appropriate to image/object delivery. I was struck with the diversity of imagery and ideas represented in the exhibition and the fact that the lynchpin that holds the submissions together was a past or present relationship to Texas. It has become evident to me that this “filter” has yielded the variety and richness represented in this year’s exhibition. KIMBERLY ARP Professor Emeritus, Printmaking Louisiana State University
