Welcome to

CADENZA SHOWCASING UTSA MUSIC

FRIENDS Welcome to the February issue of Cadenza, our new monthly e-magazine. February is a big month for the Department of Music at UTSA. Among the many activities going on this time of year, the most important are focused on recruitment of new music majors, both undergraduate and graduate. While we are a considered a large music department at the national level by our accrediting association (NASM), we must be diligent each year in attracting and supporting the high quality students that make our programs so successful. This takes a coordinated effort from faculty, staff, and students. One example of this effort is led by Dr. Si Millican, professor of music education, who heads up our faculty Recruiting Committee. This group organizes the procedures and publicity for our annual recruitment activities, and also coordinates the audition days where prospective students hope to win admission and possible scholarship support to attend UTSA. At the same time, our music ensembles (choir, band, and orchestra) have been on the road this semester to visit schools and meet prospective students. Our Spring 2018 tours put our UTSA students and faculty into direct contact with over 2,000 student musicians from Houston to San Antonio to the Rio Grande Valley. Also, associate music department chair, Dr. Stacey Davis, works with music staff in handling the complicated admission and scholarship paperwork necessary to get these students in the door once they are accepted. All of these activities require the support of our music faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends. While we admit dozens of talented music majors each year, we also lose out on many interested prospective students due to lack of scholarship and graduate assistantship funding. If you are able to help us with this ongoing effort, please make a donation today to the UTSA Friends of Music. Thank you, and best wishes for a wonderful spring, Go ‘Runners! Gene Dowdy, Interim Chair
