Welcome to
CADENZA Showcasing UTSA Music
FRIENDS, The students, staff, and faculty in the Department of Music at UTSA wish you all a very Happy New Year! This marks the halfway point of the academic year, and we welcome new students to the Department at the same time that we send best wishes to our recent graduates. I’m delighted to report that 46% of our December 2019 graduates completed their degrees with honors! We are proud of our students’ hard work, and we look forward to a new semester starting soon. This marks the second anniversary of Cadenza, and we hope you have enjoyed reading it as much as we have enjoyed preparing it for you. In fact, if you have requests for stories you would like to see featured in Cadenza, or you would like to share a story yourself, please contact us. Thank you to those of you who completed our survey link from the December issue – we appreciate the opportunity to learn from your feedback. In this issue, we feature stories about our students preparing for a semester-long study abroad program in Urbino, Italy, as well as on a new Music in Health course. We also present an article on two upcoming masterclasses that will take place at UTSA in partnership with Musical Bridges Around the World. Join us on Thursday, January 30th to welcome and learn from these special guest artists. This issue also includes a special tribute to one of our MVPs in the department, Victor Mendiola, as he approaches retirement. The Department of Music is preparing for a busy audition season. It is time to welcome a new generation of Roadrunner musicians – please help spread the word about the opportunity to join our fantastic community of students, faculty, and staff! And if you know of current UTSA students who may want to join an ensemble, please forward this issue to them. We look forward to supporting music-making across the generations through all of our programs, and we look forward to welcoming you at our upcoming events. Tracy Cowden Roland K. Blumberg Endowed Professor in Music and Chair
