STUDENT NOTE
HI!
Hey ’Runners! I’m Jose, a senior Political Science major from the Rio Grande Valley. This past March, I was elected as the new Student Body President for the Student Government Association (SGA). SGA advocates for the interests of students and promotes well-being through annual projects of health, sustainability, and academic success. Before I came to UTSA, I wanted to be a psychiatrist, because I thought that was the best way I could help people. It wasn’t until my senior year in high school that I found my real passion in organizing and trying to effect policy directly in government. This led me to finally choose my major in Political Science. One thing that made me instantly excited to attend UTSA was the city of San Antonio itself and our role in it. As our university continues to grow, so does its connection with the city it inhabits, and so does our responsibility to stand as an example of what higher education can be for under-represented communities. Our partnership runs deep, and I can’t wait to see what UTSA and San Antonio accomplish together.

Take care of yourself. There’s a big world out there waiting for you to change it, but real change starts within.
There’s so much to see and do here at UTSA. Through SGA, I’ve been able to advocate for student interests, and as a UTSA Ambassador, I’ve promoted our campus values and learned more about the next generation of Roadrunners. My biggest takeaway after three years is to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. There’s a big world out there waiting for you to change it, but real change starts within. Q&A Matthew Herrada is a Computer Science major on the Cyber Operations track, with plans to attend UTSA’s Graduate School for Computer Science. He’s currently interning with the MITRE Corporation, a nonprofit organization that aims to address challenges of modern society, including cyber security threats. Check out what Matthew has to say about the computer science program, internships, and getting involved at UTSA!
What made you want to major in Computer Science? I had been introduced to computer science by a friend. He showed me cool cyber tricks, like how to install an operating system or how to take someone off the internet. I was fascinated by it.
What’s your favorite thing about the program? Definitely Dr. White’s cyber operations class, where we get to assess an organization. We find vulnerabilities in a company’s network infrastructure and
6 FUTURE.UTSA.EDU
test them out, as if we were hackers. We report our findings in a professional manner, so it’s great practice for future engagements.
Have you had any other experiential learning opportunities at UTSA? Yes. I have been a part of the Center for Security and Privacy Enhanced Cloud Computing, the Cloud Security Research Organization. I also hold a leadership position in the Computer Security Association, and I’m in the Honors College.
How did you find the MITRE internship? After applying for several cyber security positions, I was particularly fascinated by MITRE’s internship position. They had several partnerships with UTSA in the past, so I was familiar with the company.
What advice would you give to future students who want to pursue Computer Science at UTSA? Don’t give up, keep your head up high, and look towards the future.

Your alarm goes off. Where do you wake up? You could be in Chaparral Village in your very own room, where you can hear your roommates already awake and chatting in the living room. You smell the coffee they’re brewing in the kitchenette. Maybe instead you chose a Residence Hall like Alvarez, where you get your own space and a Jack and Jill bathroom. Either way, you’re cozy in your big comforter, surrounded by all the decorations you insisted on bringing to make the space feel more like home. Now that you’re awake, it’s time to go to class. No matter which Residence Hall you’re in, it’s a short walk to the cluster of buildings that house all the classes. You could leave 10 minutes before class starts and still get there early, or you could leave even earlier and grab breakfast or coffee at Starbucks on the way. No matter what your morning routine is, you have no trouble getting to class on time.

NOON
Your morning classes are over, and now itʼs time for lunch. Youʼre craving a sandwich, and since you’re close to the John Peace Library (JPL for short), you decide to get lunch at the nearby Subway. With an easy swipe of your UTSACard, youʼre able to quickly pay for your food with Dining Dollars and enjoy a satisfying lunch with time to spare before your next class. You then remember you have a question about your financial aid. Luckily, the One Stop Enrollment Center is right next to the JPL food court. They even have an app where you can join their queue from anywhere and they’ll text you when you’re next in line. Once you get help from One Stop, it’s time to go to another class. Maybe you have a biology lab in the new Science and Engineering Building, or you could have a Freshman Composition course in the North Paseo Building. Wherever your classes are, they’re held in world-class facilities, which will help you to stay focused during lectures.

Financial Aid Financial aid can be a big help during your time in college. Luckily, UTSA has a variety of aid available.
Free Money Grants and scholarships are funds that you donʼt have to pay back — itʼs basically free money! PRO TIP: To be awarded state or institutional grant money for the fall semester, you'll need to submit the FAFSA before UTSA's fall financial aid priority deadline on January 15.
Money You Pay Back Student loans can come from either the federal government or a private source like a bank. PRO TIP: Federal loans usually offer lower rates and are more flexible, so opt for them first!
Money You Work For Work-study is an employment opportunity for students who demonstrate financial need. Unlike other financial aid awards, work-study is paid out in the form of a paycheck. You can find and apply for a work-study job through the UTSA Career Center job bank. PRO TIP: If you want to participate in this program, you must indicate so on your FAFSA.
Tips from UTSA One Stop Our One Stop Enrollment Center counselors can help with anything enrollment-related, whether itʼs about Financial Aid or registering for classes. Here are 3 tips they had for Future Roadrunners. Learn more at onestop.utsa.edu

Class is over for the day, but your studies arenʼt done just yet. You have a test later this week, so youʼre going to take time to study. There are study rooms available all over campus, but you find an open spot on the second floor of the JPL. You could have reserved a study room on the fourth floor using the UTSA Libraries website, but your classmates luckily discovered one of the second-floor open area study spaces with plenty of room. It’s nice and quiet there, so you all have a productive study session. You walk back to your room, and remember you’re running low on clean clothes. Whether you’re at Chapparal Village or Alvarez Hall, you have access to laundry facilities that are free to use. It only takes an hour for you to get your laundry done. The rest of your afternoon is open, so what do you do? Lance Tran Class of 2022 Actuarial Science

Maybe it’s a Friday, and you’re thinking about catching a movie at the UCinema — or maybe you decide to head to the Rec for a workout! Whether you’re overdue for some exercise or you just really love the Rec, there’s always plenty for you to do there.

UTSAʼs Department of Campus Recreation (AKA Campus Rec) offers fitness and wellness opportunities to all enrolled students via intramural and club sports, outdoor pursuits, group exercise, personal training, and much more. Campus Rec facilities include over 185,000 square feet of indoor space, 10 acres of artificial multi-purpose fields, and a satellite facility at the UTSA Downtown Campus. Check out campusrec.utsa.edu to learn more!
You feel excitement in the air as you walk around campus. The Rec Center is a little busy in the evenings, but there are still machines open, plenty of room on the track, and the pool is open for another couple of hours. You see a poster on the wall for a group exercise class. It started thirty minutes earlier, so you decide to try climbing the rock wall (which is one of the tallest rock walls on any college campus). There are also spots open in the weight area. You do some sets and run into a group of your friends. They’re coming back from the group exercise class you saw the poster for. After hearing how much fun they had, you decide to attend the class with them next week. As you walk out with your friends, you make plans to do something off campus that weekend. You don’t want to go too far, so you think about trying out The Block, the open area right by campus that’s full of food trucks. It’s a regular hangout spot for students. You also suggest shopping at La Cantera, and a couple of your friends suggest Six Flags. They bought season passes, and they’re each allowed to bring one free guest. There’s so much to do off campus, so you all agree to put a plan together later in the week.

Isabella is in her senior year at UTSA, majoring in Biomedical Engineering. She serves as a Resident Assistant at Laurel Village, and is involved in multiple organizations on campus. After graduation, she hopes to find a career in her field helping to develop and improve medical devices. Read Isabella’s story!
Transitioning to life on a college campus isn’t always easy. That’s what Resident Assistants (RA for short) like Isabella Cano are for. Isabella is a Resident Assistant for Laurel Village, one of UTSA’s Main Campus residence halls. As an RA, she helps students adjust and makes sure life on campus is a comfortable, fun experience for her residents. The best way to adjust to life on campus is by getting involved, and there’s no better way to lead than by example. In addition to serving as an RA, Isabella is an Ambassador for the College of Engineering and Integrated Design, where she and other ambassadors volunteer for the college and

perform outreach at high schools for potential Future Roadrunners. She is also a member of the student organizations Quality of Life Plus and the Biomedical Engineering Society. Not only does her involvement on campus improve her college life, but it helps prepare for the future, too. “All these experiences have given me the opportunity to have leadership roles where I get to oversee other students and take initiative,” Isabella states. “I have also had the opportunity to network with companies and professors, which has given me great job opportunities.” Like many students, seeing the campus motivated her to attend UTSA. Upon
touring campus, she could easily envision herself as a student at UTSA. She says diversity was another factor that made the university stand out for her because “UTSA does an excellent job at celebrating diversity and inclusiveness.” Isabella advises new students to get involved around campus and “try new things. Don’t be afraid, because no one is judging you, so just have fun.”
