STUDENT NOTE

HI!

Greetings, ‘Runners! I’m Kennedy Bustos, a senior here at UTSA. This semester I'll be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English with a Professional Writing Concentration, and I plan to pursue graduate school soon after. As a first-generation student, I cherish my education with beaming pride and endless gratitude. My academic achievements at UTSA are a result of the steady encouragement and mentorship I’ve received from the outstanding UTSA faculty. I’m honored to be a recipient of several scholarships, including the Distinguished Transfer Scholarship and the College of Liberal and Fine Arts Presidential Scholarship. In addition, I have had multiple opportunities for research and study abroad. I’ll actually be attending a study abroad program in Urbino, Italy, this semester! At UTSA, I’ve discovered and rediscovered my passions countless times, but I found my home away from home at The Paisano—an independent student news publication serving the UTSA community. From Summer to Fall 2021, I was ecstatic to serve as the Managing Editor of The Paisano. My experiences there changed my life—I gained deeper confidence in myself, I built friendships that will last a lifetime, and my love for writing was reinforced tenfold. Now, I will forever be a proud advocate for student journalism.

You can and will succeed. There is a beautiful community rooting for you, cheering you on, and ready to succeed alongside you!

By getting involved on campus, I discovered the career path that will define the next chapter of my life. Get involved—I promise it will be worth it. Most importantly, remember that there are resources at UTSA available to aid in your academic journey. You can and will succeed. There is a beautiful community rooting for you, cheering you on, and ready to succeed alongside you! Kennedy Bustos Devine, TX Class of 2022 English

TOP-TIER ACADEMICS

Q&A Victor is a senior at UTSA, graduating Spring 2022 with a degree in Statistics and Data Science. During Victorʼ̓s time at UTSA, he has eagerly prepared for the professional world. Victor is an Honors College member and a First-Year Experience peer mentor. He has also participated in undergraduate research as an Alvarez Fellow.

What made you choose UTSA? I chose UTSA because I’m from San Antonio and like to stay close to my family. One of the benefits is that I live right next to a VIA bus stop and have been able to commute to campus using the U-Pass System, which is a semester pass for students allowing free unlimited usage of the VIA bus system throughout the academic year.

What did you learn as a First-Year Experience peer mentor? As a peer mentor, I worked with a lot of different students,

6 FUTURE.UTSA.EDU

and I really grew to appreciate the diversity at UTSA. I learned about all the different goals and paths students are able to take here.

What is the Alvarez Undergraduate Research Fellowship? It basically is a three-year funded research program, which involves taking classes to prepare for a PhD, working

“It’s really important to find your passion and explore new things.”

as a research assistant with a faculty mentor, and conducting your very own research project. Right now, as an Alvarez Fellow, I’m researching Charter Schools and their impact on traditional public schools.

What advice would you give to new students considering UTSA? I would say to get involved and don’t be afraid just because something doesn’t have to do with your current major. I changed my major at the end of my sophomore year. It’s really important to find your passion and explore new things.

CONNECTING TO YOUR FUTURE JONATHAN USHINDI ZALUKE

Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo | Class of 2020 Information Systems | Senior Digital Community and Product Specialist at Older Adults Technology Services

Jonathan Ushindi Zaluke is a UTSA alum who’s working to make technology more accessible to older adults. He works as the Senior Digital Community and Product Specialist at an AARP charitable affiliate, Older Adults Technology Services. There, he is managing the development of a new social platform made exclusively for older adults. He also works independently as an iOS developer, and will soon release his first application on the App Store. Jonathan took a less traditional path to the Roadrunner commencement stage. He came to UTSA as a transfer student and a veteran of the U.S. Army, and graduated with a degree in Information Systems in May 2020. His time as a Roadrunner has paved the way for success in his current role. While at UTSA, Jonathan took many courses revolving around programming and cyber security, which he uses in his daily work. “I work with a team of developers, and I wouldn’t be able to communicate effectively with them without the skills I acquired in my UTSA classes.”

A degree in Information Systems is highly valued, as Jonathan soon found out. “The degree I got from UTSA made me a prime candidate for many employments. I turned down many of them before accepting my current role.” His degree from UTSA was also part of what drew interest in Jonathan from DeAnne Cuellar, his current employer. “She gave me the job when she was a passenger in my Uber. She noticed that I was going to UTSA for Information Systems and Cyber Security and that I was into tech.” His degree and courses were not all he gained from UTSA. Roadrunners often gain important connections. For Jonathan, it was through the UTSA faculty. “Professors are the best resources and business connections I made while at UTSA.” He even met his wife in a Calculus class! Jonathan advises students interested in tech to consider UTSA. Many alumni like Jonathan have also found success, and you could be one of them!

GROWING INTO POTENTIAL ANNA ARROYO

Austin, TX | Class of 2021 Computer Science Software Engineer at Twitter At UTSA, opportunities are available to everyone, and Roadrunner alumni Anna Arroyo made the most of hers. With her degree in Computer Science, Ana secured a job as a Software Engineer with Twitter, where she works on the Twitter Android app and develops features focused on media and media sharing. Anna was one of 38 students selected out of 1000+ applicants for #DevelopHER, one of Twitter’s early career diversity programs. Through this program, she interviewed for an internship program at Twitter, which she landed. Once she completed her internship, Twitter offered her a full-time position after her graduation. Anna feels she owes a lot of her success to the connections she made at UTSA. “If it wasn’t for the amazing people I met at UTSA, I would not be where I am today.” She made many of those connections through organizations like the UTSA Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Association for Computing Machinery - Women’s Chapter (ACM-W). These student organizations are dedicated to allowing students in all technology and computing fields the chance to gain experience, network, and develop professional skills. Anna was very active in the ACM and ACM-W chapters. She held leadership positions in the organizations for three years, and acknowledges the role the organizations played in her success. “ACM at UTSA quickly became a very important community for me and prepared me for my career by helping me develop my leadership, social, and technical skills.”

The coursework at UTSA also provided Anna with a lot of the skills she needed to secure and thrive in her position at Twitter. Her concentration in Software Engineering allowed her the opportunity to take upperlevel courses that helped her get familiar with the practices and technologies that she uses in her current role. Anna advises students that seeking opportunities for growth, both for yourself and your community, is a great way to prepare for the professional world. “Learn from the people around you and make lasting connections with people who will support you and your career path.” As Anna could tell you, there’s no better place to do so than UTSA.

If it wasn’t for the amazing people I met at UTSA, I would not be where I am today.

WORKING HARD TO CREATE OPPORTUNITY JUSTIN STRETON San Antonio, TX | Class of 2016 | Biology Laboratory Services Supervisor at UTSA Some Roadrunners find their bold future very close to home. Justin has been a San Antonian since fifth grade after his military family settled here. He entered UTSA as a freshman, and later found his career on campus. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with concentrations in Microbiology and Neurobiology, he secured a position as a Laboratory Services Supervisor for the Molecular Microbiology and Immunology department at UTSA. His job puts him in charge of maintaining the undergraduate labs and making sure students and instructors in the lab have everything they need. Like many students before him, Justin started out as a work study at UTSA. Work study is a form of financial aid granted to qualifying university students. This aid allows them a part-time position

12 FUTURE.UTSA.EDU

on their campus to help cover their tuition and fees. His work study position started in the microbiology teaching lab, and after graduation, the position became full-time. He appreciates his time spent as a work study in the labs, as it allowed him to surround himself with colleagues in his field, which taught him important skills necessary for his career while still a student. Attending UTSA as a work study also allowed Justin to network before graduation. “I began to get to know some of my professors and colleagues better.” This gave him the rapport he needed to secure his full-time position at UTSA. Justin advises students to take advantage of every opportunity they can. “Any opportunity that presents itself has the potential to teach you invaluable lessons that can flourish into unimaginable opportunities.”

Eftekhar & Associates Adrian Rodriguez-Estrada is an accomplished student athlete obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He hasn’t walked the stage just yet, but he has an exciting career already lined up. While at UTSA, Adrian was able to secure an internship at J. Eftekhar & Associates, an accident reconstruction company. There, he helped with inspections, ran simulation graphics, and applied his knowledge of mechanical engineering. Adrian’s work at J. Eftekhar paid off. They offered him a full-time job as a Project Engineer after he graduates, where he’ll

continue to fulfill many of the tasks he mastered during his internship. Adrian attributes much of his success to his time at UTSA. His engineering courses prepared him for his career. “My UTSA instructors helped me not only learn the material, but learn to apply it in different real-world situations.” He owes much of his motivation to learn to his instructors, as they urged him to take responsibility for his learning and push himself. Being part of the Men’s Basketball team at UTSA has also helped him learn important skills for his upcoming

career. “My experience as a student athlete has really helped me understand the importance of time commitment and time management,” he says, both of which will no doubt help him succeed at J. Eftekhar. Adrian advises students to take advantage of networking opportunities while attending college. “The best advice I’ve received is it’s not about what you know, it’s who you know.” That advice has helped Adrian and countless other Roadrunners achieve their career goals.

LANDING THE DREAM JOB MACKENZIE HOGAN

Pearland, TX | Class of 2021 | Marketing & Dance Entertainer at Disney Cruise Line Dreams really can come true at UTSA. Mackenzie Hogan, who graduated Fall 2021 with a B.B.A. in Marketing, is pursuing the career of her dreams working for Disney Cruise Line as an Entertainer.

Mackenzie’s marketing courses like Destination Marketing and Event Management furthered her interest in finding a career focused on tourism. Her position with Disney makes use of not only her degree in Marketing, but her minor in Dance as well, where she had opportunities to perform for crowds and improve her dance techniques. She credits her professors, Dr. Ricard Jensen and

14 FUTURE.UTSA.EDU

Professor Megan Rulewicz, for giving her the education and guidance she needed for her career. Experiences outside of Mackenzie’s coursework at UTSA also helped her develop the skills necessary for her job. She held an executive board position in Roadrunner Productions, an organization that hosts major UTSA events for students, which helped her further develop her event-planning skills. She also secured two professional marketing internships, which gave her real-world experience in her field—all before graduating. It’s no wonder she secured her dream job!

Disney was a goal for Mackenzie long before she received her job offer. She applied to the Disney College program, but the program was cancelled due to the pandemic. However, it was during the application process that she found her current position, and thanks to her experience at UTSA, was offered the job. Mackenzie offers this advice for future students: “Find what you’re passionate about and go for it. No dream is too big.” Indeed, no dream is too big at UTSA. Students like Mackenzie can attest to that.

like team building and networking, through the UTSA All Majors and Internship Career Fair and his time as a UTSA Student Ambassador. Robert’s courses at UTSA allowed him to build upon other skills in his field. “I was able to learn all the tips and tricks in the world of marketing.” He also learned about social media and digital marketing, which helped prepare him for his role at Whataburger. Through the Student Ambassador program, Robert made meaningful connections at UTSA. “I regularly met President Taylor Eighmy, along with the Dean of UTSA’s Graduate

School, Ambika Mathur.” Those connections helped him get accepted into UTSA’s Graduate School program, where he is now a full-time MBA candidate. Robert advises students to gain as many connections and experiences as possible while attending college. “It’s all about becoming involved and joining extracurricular clubs and organizations that not only spark your interest, but are related to your field of study as well.” His advice holds up well, as these are the very things at UTSA that helped him get to where he is now.

First-Gen Transfer

Azizah is a Global Affairs major set to graduate at the end of this Spring 2022 semester. She’s the first in her family to attend college and a transfer student who’s proud to call herself a Roadrunner. Read on to learn more!

Being the first in your family to go to college can come with its own set of challenges. Senior Azizah Aziz faced those obstacles head on. With the help of UTSA’s student resources, she excelled through her undergraduate studies and has a bright future ahead of her. UTSA’s resources for first-generation and transfer students, like Azizah, were part of what drew her to transfer to UTSA from San Antonio College. The FirstGeneration and Transfer Student Center gave her the guidance she needed to succeed through programs such as peer mentoring, in which returning first-gen students help new students navigate college life. The Center also helped Azizah by promoting events and activities that encouraged students

16 FUTURE.UTSA.EDU

to form good study habits and other helpful practices. Her decision to major in Global Affairs was motivated by personal experiences. Azizah and her family are Rohingya, one of the most persecuted ethnic minority groups in Southeast Asia.

“Remember who you are. Be proud of the story, the goal, and the dream you carry with you.” Azizah’s heritage and the challenges that come with it fueled her passion for social justice and human rights. Studying Global Affairs at UTSA has allowed her to pursue that passion.

After graduation, Azizah plans to pursue a humanitarian career. She wants to start her own foundation to help refugees and immigrants— especially her fellow Rohingya—by providing education and resources to those who need it. Azizah has been able to prepare this type of career through campus organizations, such as the Model United Nations Society, the Public Administration Student Organization (PASO), and UTSA Student Leadership. Azizah advises future Roadrunners to “remember who you are. Be proud of the story, the goal, and the dream you carry with you.” UTSA encourages students like Azizah to celebrate their backgrounds and use it to create their bold futures.
