The Rowdy Bunch! UTSA Enrollment Reaches New Heights This fall, Roadrunners came together to excel in a new learning environment that has brought them closer to achieving their academic goals. UTSA remained flexible and adapted 95% of its courses online, and despite state university trends, enrollment increased by 6.6% and soared to a record high of 34,700 students.

STUDENT NOTE

HI!

Hello! My name is Vanessa M. Sanchez, and I was raised with the goal of pursuing higher education. I decided to become a history major after being immersed in several historical reference books and inspired by social studies teachers who gave me greater insight into the world around me. I was honored to receive the Sandra Cisneros Service to the Community Endowed Scholarship, which is awarded to students who are committed to enhancing the lives of those in their community through volunteering. It’s given me the opportunity to devote more time to my studies with less financial worries. At UTSA, I have been involved with VOICES, a student volunteer organization dedicated to serving local communities through service projects. Through VOICES, I participated in Alternative Spring Break in New Orleans, Louisiana. We learned about the effects of Hurricane Katrina and helped those who were homeless and food insecure. Currently, I’m fortunate to co-lead one of these experiences, with a focus on racial equity. I’m excited to see how we can still educate ourselves and give back in this online world.

VOICES (Volunteer Organization Involving Community Education & Service) connects UTSA Students with volunteer opportunities in our community!

Vanessa M. Sanchez Harlingen, TX Class of 2023 History

One of the factors that stood out to me about UTSA is its diverse community. It’s important to interact with other students who come from different backgrounds.

UTSA offers scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and other opportunities to help students pursue nearly any interest they may have. The university also has staff and faculty that are there to help guide students through the process. Being a part of Roadrunner Nation has presented me with the freedom to go after my goals in education and in life. My advice to Future Roadrunners is to get involved in clubs on campus and try something new, because that is what allows you to grow. Go ‘Runners!

Q&A

Bailey Greene Fort Hood, TX Class of 2021 Mechanical Engineering

Bailey knew early on that he wanted to work in the alternative energy automotive industry. He decided the best way to get a foot in the door and affect change towards alternative energy vehicles was to become a mechanical engineer, so he chose to study mechanical engineering. During a campus tour at UTSA, he fell in love with the community and just knew he was meant to be a Roadrunner.

What makes UTSA and its engineering program great? I love the sense of identity and community we have in the College of Engineering (COE). I appreciate all the amazing resources and programs COE offers. It’s incredible what a solid support network and reasonable expectations can do for your studies and your mental health. UTSA is a welcoming university with a rich campus life experience. As a pansexual, I have never felt unwelcome at UTSA. I feel safe and comfortable being unapologetically me. I hope every Roadrunner feels safe being who they are here and in our community. I want to do my part to make UTSA even more welcoming

6 FUTURE.UTSA.EDU

and inclusive so that now and forever, we remain Roadrunners.

Tell us about COE’s Freshman Interest Group (FIG) program and what it’s like to be a Peer Advisor! FIG helps first-year engineering students form connections in their community and create a lasting support network that will help them succeed. I was a FIG student my first year, and I still stay in touch with friends from my cohort. It’s really rewarding to be a Peer Advisor now.

What things are you involved in at UTSA? I found myself getting really involved in the Student Government

Association (SGA), where I currently serve as Speaker of the Senate. I also started a student group called the Council on Diversity and Inclusion (CODI) to help minority groups, like the LGBTQ+ community, feel represented within the COE.

Do you have any advice for Future Roadrunners? Get involved! This has helped me when I am struggling in my classes. I don’t get overwhelmed or burnt out, because I know I can receive support from the communities I’m involved in.

Bailey works with fellow Roadrunners to create a more inclusive community through SGA and CODI!

“Engineering classes require dedication to your studies, but they aren’t as hard as you think, so long as you put in the time and effort.”

UTSA’s new $95M state-of-the-art Science and Engineering Building (SEB) is an engineer’s dream playground—ahem, ideal workspace!

From ultraviolet lights that disinfect shopping carts to bionic hands controlled by muscle impulses, students in the SEB collaborate every day to build something new that can change the world for the better. Around 360 engineering students regularly meet in this space to work together on their senior design projects. The area has an open layout to accommodate large engineering projects and to promote cross-disciplinary interactions between student teams.

Machine Shop The Machine Shop is all about metal fabrication and offers everything from milling machines, lathes, drill presses, sheet metal benders, welders, table saws, joiners, routers, and more. You can fabricate just about any part you could want or imagine in this machine shop, and some engineering courses meet here regularly for class.

Tools of the Trade In the SEB, engineering students have access to all the tools they’ll need to complete their projects. In fact, they can even check out an entire toolbox from a nearby storage area! If they need software instead of hardware, students can also use one of the Makerspace’s several highend computers installed with CAD.

Plastic & Metal 3D Printing The 3D Print Lab houses over 25 plastic 3D printers. Students can draw any part they need on a Makerspace computer and print it in plastic in one of the lab’s 3D printers. Opening in spring 2021, the Metal 3D Print Room is dedicated to a metal 3D printer for students who need to print design parts in a hardier metal rather than the plastic materials used in the 3D Print Lab.

You can apply on fafsa.gov or through the MyStudentAid App. To download, search for “myStudentAid” on your app store. After you complete the FAFSA, you’ll receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) which lists your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This will give you an estimate of what you can expect in financial aid. ROWDY LIFE

Spotlight STUDENT

Student Leader

Growing up in San Antonio, Sally always viewed UTSA as a university that would provide her with a top tier education. Now, as a Roadrunner studying finance, she’s challenged to take the concepts she’s learned in the classroom and apply them to the corporate world.

Sally has taken advantage of many resources and opportunities at UTSA. The guidance she received from UTSA’s Career Center proved especially critical to her success. The career counselors there offered feedback on her resume, hosted mock interviews, and guided her through the internship application process. “Internships are highly competitive, but they’re an essential professional development experience,” said Sally. “The Career Center provided me with guidance throughout the recruiting process and contributed greatly to my success in securing internships.” During her sophomore year, Sally interned for six months at Rackspace. It was there that she realized how much she enjoyed learning about finance and

16 FUTURE.UTSA.EDU

applying it to the real world. She saw firsthand how her studies at UTSA could lead to a dynamic career. Last summer, Sally worked as a financial analyst intern at USAA’s corporate treasury. It all started after meeting an intern program manager at an on-campus networking event, which later led to an interview and internship offer. Little did she know, this would lead to the start of her professional career. Sally recently accepted a full-time job offer to return to USAA next June after she graduates. In addition to her internships, Sally also works on campus as a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader for a microeconomics course. SI Leaders “retake” a traditionally difficult course that they have already aced and then host

free study sessions between classes to help their fellow students. She’s also a member of the Business Honors Program and The Investment Society. Sally’s advice to Future Roadrunners is to evaluate all the opportunities, resources, and academic courses that UTSA offers. From the Career Center and the Center for Student Professional Development to the free on-campus tutoring, UTSA has plenty of support services to help its students succeed.

“As a student at UTSA, I’ve seen how invested the faculty and staff are in our success. This sets UTSA apart from other universities.”
