Dr. Minju Kim
Dr. Minju Kim is a violinist, violist, educator, and social advocate whose multifaceted career bridges performance, teaching, and community engagement. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Violin at the Boston University School of Music and has held faculty positions at institutions including the Cleveland Institute of Music Preparatory Program and the University of Akron, where she also served as Chair of the String Area. Her extensive teaching experience spans institutions and programs such as the Festival del Lago, Encore Chamber Music, IU Summer String Academy, Community Music School at Oberlin, and the Jacobs School of Music. Committed to access and equity in music education, she has also worked with outreach initiatives like Habitat4Music and the Fairview Violin Project, which bring music instruction to underserved public schools.
As a performer, Dr. Kim has appeared on international stages including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Severance Hall, collaborating with musicians from The Cleveland Orchestra, the Manhattan Chamber Players, and Gryphon Trio. She has performed at festivals such as Artosphere, Strings Music Festival, Festival de Febrero, and IMS Prussia Cove, and toured with ensembles including A Far Cry and the Khemia Ensemble. Her performances have been broadcast on American Public Media’s Performance Today, WQXR, and WCLV, and she appears on the Grammy-nominated album Canto America. She is a former principal second violinist of CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra and has held concertmaster roles with the Evansville Philharmonic. She continues to perform with major orchestras such as the Cleveland Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Dr. Kim is also the founder and director of the Third Culture Ensemble, an initiative that brings together musicians, students, and community partners to explore the role of classical music in social advocacy, with programs addressing themes such as incarceration and homelessness. Her artistic philosophy centers on music’s power to build community, uplift underrepresented voices, and foster empathy. She holds a Doctor of Music from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she studied with Mauricio Fuks and the Pacifica Quartet, and degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music under Paul Kantor. She is also a certified ELDOA practitioner and passionate advocate for musicians’ wellness, regularly leading workshops on injury prevention and mind-body integration. Outside of music, she enjoys design, yoga, hiking, and spending time in nature.
