Dr. Nicholas Councilor is Assistant Professor of Practice at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he teaches applied clarinet, woodwind methods, and directs the clarinet choir. He previously held teaching positions at Texas A&M University Kingsville and The University of Texas at Austin. He also maintains a large private studio in Austin and San Antonio, where his students frequently make the TMEA All-State ensembles and earn top accolades in solo competitions. As a clinician for the D’Addario Woodwind Method Program, Dr. Councilor has taught nearly 100 clinics to students of all ages throughout Central Texas.
Dr. Councilor is a versatile freelance musician with an active schedule of solo, orchestral, and chamber music performances. He has performed as a featured soloist with the Austin Symphonic Band, the Waterloo Wind Band, the EMU Wind Symphony, and performed John Corigliano’s Concerto with the University of Texas Wind Ensemble in a premiere performance of a new wind band transcription by Craig B. Davis. Nicholas is a member of the San Antonio Philharmonic , the Central Texas Philharmonic, and the Mid-Texas Symphony, and performs regularly with the Austin Symphony Orchestra and other regional orchestras across the state. He has also appeared as guest principal clarinetist with the San Antonio Symphony and the Dallas Winds. He can be heard as principal clarinetist in the UT Wind Ensemble recording “Wine Dark Sea.” As an avid chamber musician, Dr. Councilor has earned the silver medal at the prestigious Fischoff Competition and is a prizewinner of the Coleman and Plowman chamber music competitions, as well as the American Prize. He is also a skilled woodwind doubler and has performed for dozens of musical theater productions.
Dr. Councilor earned his Doctoral of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Eastern Michigan University. In his spare time, Nicholas enjoys daily walks in the park, game nights with friends, and spending time in the water during the summer.
Hailed by the San Antonio Current as “consistently brilliant and impossibly cool,” conductor Troy Peters is Director of the UTSA Orchestra at the University of Texas San Antonio and Music Director of Youth Orchestras of San Antonio. Formerly Resident Conductor of the San Antonio Symphony and Music Director of the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, Peters has guest conducted many orchestras, including the Oregon Symphony, San Antonio Philharmonic, West Virginia Symphony, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and Round Rock Symphony. Musical America featured him in their 2016 special issue, The MA30 Professionals of the Year: The Innovators. He was previously Music Director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra and conducted college orchestras at Texas State University and Middlebury College. He has also gained international attention for his orchestral collaborations with rock musicians, including Blind Pilot, Jon Anderson (of the band Yes), and Trey Anastasio (of the band Phish), with whom he recorded two albums on Elektra Records.
Peters conducted the world premiere recording of Daron Hagen’s Masquerade with violinist Jaime Laredo, cellist Sharon Robinson, and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, on Bridge Rescords. Among the other soloists with whom he has collaborated are Branford Marsalis, Midori, Edgar Meyer,
Time for Three, and Richard Stoltzman. His work has been the subject of national media attention from CBS Sunday Morning, National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition, Symphony, and The New Yorker. Awarded a Vermont Arts Council Citation of Merit in 2009, he has also been honored with eight ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music and has conducted more dozens of world premieres. He has presented pre-concert talks for the Philadelphia Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and San Antonio Symphony.
Peters is also active as a composer, where his honors include the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and grants from Meet the Composer and the Rockefeller Foundation. He holds degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Pennsylvania, where his primary compositional mentors were Ned Rorem and George Crumb.
