Strength & Conditioning Mission Statement UTSA student-athletes are running faster and getting stronger thanks to a commitment to an enhanced strength and conditioning program and a new weight room.
The UTSA Strength & Conditioning Department provides athletes the means by which they can train consistently, sensibly and systematically over designated periods of time in a safe, clean and professional environment to help prevent injury and improve athletics performance.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the University of Texas at San Antonio strength & conditioning program adheres strictly to the three proven scientific principles of adaptation ‌ Specificity The transfer of a training adaptation to a gain in competition performance. Overload Adaptation takes place when the magnitude of training is greater than normal and is achieved by prescribing the correct number of sets, repetitions and intensity of effort. The primary focus is the muscular and energy systems’ adaptation to overload. Periodization Training phases must be planned so that speed, agility, power and endurance will peak during the most important competitions.

Dr. Ricardo Romo U niversity P resident (Texas • 1967) Ricardo Romo is the fifth president of The University of Texas at San Antonio, one of the fastest growing institutions of higher education in Texas and the nation. During his tenure as president, which began in May 1999, UTSA has become an institution of first choice for students seeking a university degree. Under his leadership, student enrollment has risen to more than 31,000, representing 68 percent growth in enrollment. The university has added numerous programs and facilities to enhance student life and expand its research capacity. UTSA was named one of the state’s emerging research universities by the Texas Legislature with annual research expenditures of $56 million and sponsored program expenditures of $70 million for fiscal year 2010, representing a six-fold increase in expenditures during Romo’s tenure. A San Antonio native who grew up on the city’s West Side, Romo graduated from Fox Tech High School before attending the University of Texas at Austin on a track scholarship. At UT Austin, he was the first Texan to run the mile in less than four minutes, a record that lasted 41 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from UT Austin (1967) and holds a master’s degree in history from Loyola Marymount University (1970). Additionally, Romo earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Los Angeles (1975). A nationally respected urban historian, Romo is the author of “East Los Angeles: History of a Barrio,” now in its ninth printing (one in Spanish). Romo began his academic career teaching social studies from 1967 to 1970 at Franklin High School in Los Angeles. Lynn Hickey D irector
of
A thletics
(Ouachita Baptist • 1973) Lynn Hickey has made student-athlete welfare one of her top priorities as she continues to work to bring the UTSA Athletics Department to the upper echelon of the NCAA Division I standings. Under Hickey’s direction since 2000, UTSA has captured two Southland Conference Commissioner’s Cups as the league’s top athletics department and two men’s and one women’s all-sports trophies while consistently winning both team and individual academic and athletics awards in all 17 sports sponsored by the university. One of Hickey’s dreams to lead UTSA to the upper echelon of Division I Athletics was realized on Nov. 11, 2010, when the university received and accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) beginning on July 1, 2012. Hickey’s long-term goal of placing UTSA in a major conference was reached when Conference USA extended an invitation on May 4, 2012. The Roadrunners will move all 17 sports into that league on July 1, 2013. Hickey has overseen the addition of three sports during her tenure. Women’s golf and women’s soccer were added in 2005 and 2006, respectively, and both programs have emerged as annual league championship contenders. On Dec. 18, 2008, UTSA’s Athletics Initiative Business Plan was approved by the UT System Board of Regents, granting permission to start a football program. Hickey made a splash with the hiring of the first-ever head football coach, as two-time National Coach of the Year Larry Coker was introduced on March 6, 2009. The program kicked off its first season against Northeastern State on Sept. 3, 2011, to resounding success. The Roadrunners set NCAA start-up program records for inaugural game (56,743) and average home (35,521) attendance in six games at the 65,000-seat Alamodome. The 2010-11 academic year will go down in history as arguably the most successful in school annals, as the Roadrunners claimed the Southland Commissioner’s Cup and Women’s All-Sports Trophy, five championships and the first-ever NCAA postseason victory. UTSA followed that with four more league titles during the 2011-12 campaign, giving the department 36 total championships since 2000-01. Hickey has led the charge for UTSA and its hosting of numerous NCAA Championship events. Since her arrival on campus, UTSA has served as host institution for the 2001 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional, 2002 Women’s Final Four, 2003 Men’s Basketball South Regional, 2004 Men’s Final Four, 2005 Women’s Volleyball Championship, 2006 Women’s Basketball South Regional, 2007 Men’s Basketball South Regional, 2008 Men’s Final Four, 2010 Women’s Final Four, 2011 Men’s Basketball Southwest
Regional and 2011 Women’s Volleyball Championship. In 2007, Hickey was named to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the most prestigious appointments in all of collegiate athletics. The 10-member committee oversees administration of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, including the selection and seeding of teams for the tournament. Hickey became just the second female ever selected to the committee, joining UNC Charlotte Athletics Director Judy Rose, who served from 1999-2003. Hickey has been honored nationally and locally for her hard work at UTSA. She was named the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators 2005 Division I-AAA Administrator of the Year. Hickey earned her second national award in June 2006 as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics/GeneralSports TURF Systems Division I-AAA West Region AD of the Year. The San Antonio Express-News tabbed her as its 2010 Sportswoman of the Year and she also was selected to and completed the Masters Leadership Program of San Antonio and Bexar County. In September 2011, she received the ATHENA Leadership from the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. “UTSA is very fortunate to have an athletic leader with both the administrative and coaching experience of Lynn Hickey,” UTSA President Dr. Ricardo Romo said. “Lynn not only is a leader who can take our athletic program to the next level, but she is also well respected nationally and serves as an excellent role model for all student-athletes at this university.” In serving as the fourth athletics director in UTSA history, Hickey assumed the lead athletics role at one of the youngest NCAA Division I universities in the country (UTSA began athletics competition in 1981). The only female Division I athletics director that oversees both men’s and women’s sports in the state of Texas, she served as President of the Southland from 2002-04 and as the league’s representative to the NCAA Championship/Competition Cabinet. Hickey also was a member of the Women’s Basketball Rules Committee from 2003-06, spending the last two years as chair. Hickey came to San Antonio from Texas A&M University, where she served as senior associate athletics director/senior woman administrator from 19942000. At Texas A&M, her responsibilities included event management and marketing and promotions for 16 of the university’s 19 Division I sports. She also represented the Big 12 Conference as a member of the NCAA Championship Cabinet. From 1984-94, Hickey served as head women’s basketball coach for Texas A&M. She directed the 1993-94 Aggies basketball team to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, becoming the lowest-seeded team to ever reach that milestone. Texas A&M finished the year ranked No. 19 in the CNN/USA Today Top 25 poll. Following the season, Hickey relinquished her coaching duties to accept the promotion to senior associate athletics director. She finished her coaching career with an overall mark of 279-167 in 15 years of collegiate coaching. Before her stint at A&M, Hickey was head women’s basketball coach at Kansas State University from 1979-84. She averaged more than 23 wins per season in posting a 125-39 (.762) record over five years and led the Wildcats to five consecutive national tournament berths. She was inducted into the Kansas State Athletics Hall of Fame in September 2004. A native of Welch, Okla., Hickey graduated summa cum laude from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark., with a bachelor’s degree in education. She was an All-American for OBU’s nationally-ranked basketball team and a member of the USA National Team in 1973. Hickey and her husband, Bill, have one daughter, Lauren Nicole. 21

Extra benefits would include, but are not limited to: • An employment arrangement for a prospect’s relatives; • Gifts of clothing or equipment; • Cosigning of loans; • Providing loans to a prospect’s relatives or friends; • Cash or like items; • Use of an automobile; • Any tangible items, including merchandise; • Free or reduced-cost services, rentals or purchases of any type; • Free or reduced-cost housing • Use of a college’s athletic equipment; • Sponsorship of or arrangement for an awards banquet for high school, prep school or two-year college athletes by a college, athletics representative or its alumni groups; • Employment of a student-athlete at a rate higher then the wages paid for similar work; and • Payment to a student-athlete for work not performed.
Recruiting
Only coaches and athletics department staff may be involved in the recruiting process. Athletic representatives are prohibited from contacting a prospective student-athlete or members of his/her family by telephone, letter, e-mail, or in person for the purpose of encouraging participation in athletics at The University of Texas at San Antonio. This includes contacting prospective student-athletes on social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) The prohibition remains in effect even after the prospect signs a national letterof-intent (scholarship offer). You can do your part by forwarding names of any potential recruits to the UTSA coaching staffs.
Prospective Student-Athlete
A prospective student-athlete is a person who has started classes for the ninth grade. You can become a prospect even if you have not started the ninth grade, if a college gives you or your relatives any financial aid help or other benefits that it does not give others. The university may provide (a) three complimentary tickets to an on-campus athletics event in which the university’s team is competing and (b) transportation to view offcampus practice and competition sites within a 30-mile radius. A
Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox
aron Fox is in his fifth season as UTSA’s director of track & field and cross country. An integral part of Roadrunners track & field for more than a decade, Fox has been in charge of the men since 2003 and he added the women to his list of responsibilities following the merging of the two programs in July 2008. His career in the Alamo City began as an assistant for both the men and women from 2000-02. Fox will usher UTSA into the Western Athletic Conference this year following unprecedented success in the program’s former home, the Southland Conference. He led the men to a league-record seven consecutive Southland Conference Indoor Championships and was named Southland Indoor Coach of the Year from 2006-12 (only coach in league history to earn seven straight awards). The Roadrunners also won three outdoor titles in their final five years in the league (2008, ‘10 & ‘12) and he picked up Coach of the Year accolades following each of those indoor/outdoor sweeps. Fox’s other honors include the 2008 and ‘11 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Central Region Indoor Coach of the Year and he also represented Team USA as an assistant coach at the 2010 Thorpe Cup (annual United States/Germany decathlon competition). A former All-America decathlete at the University of Texas, he already has tutored several high-profile athletes at UTSA, including four-time All-Americans Richard Garrett Jr. and Teddy Williams, three-time All-Americans Keith Benford and Justin Youngblood, two-time All-Americans Devon Bond and Larry Brooks, All-Americans Brandon Buteaux, Keyunta Hayes, Tyler Williamson and Rhonda Ray, two-time national qualifier Curtis Johnson, four-time Southland Champion Will Vese and 2008 Southland Cross Country, six-time indoor and three-time outdoor league champion Dana Mecke. Under his watchful eye, Roadrunners student-athletes have broken or tied eight conference records and established a total of 55 school marks. They also have won 105 league titles and earned 20 All-America certificates. There has been just as much success in the classroom, as multi-event performer Bryan Wolfe swept Southland Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2005 and ’06, while Mecke was honored four times (2008 cross country/’09-10 indoor/’10 outdoor) in addition to earning third-team ESPN The Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades in 2010. During the past six years, 87 individuals have qualified for NCAA Championship Preliminary Round competition and 20 have advanced to the national meets. In a tight team race that came down to the final event, the Flagstaff, Ariz., native led UTSA to its first-ever Southland Indoor Championship in 2006 behind individual championships from Buteaux (heptathlon) and Mthobisi Baloyi (800m). His Roadrunners successfully defended that title a year later on the strength of gold medals by Brooks (800m), Gaston Griffin (400m) and Vese (60m hurdles) and UTSA completed the three-peat in 2008 when a leaguerecord six athletes — Steven Brown (200m), Luke Johnson (shot put), P.J. McGowen (high jump), Vese (60m hurdles), Williams (60m) and Tommy Wolfe (heptathlon) — came back to the Alamo City with individual championships. The Roadrunners picked up their fourth consecutive title in February 2009 when Vese (60m hurdles), Johnathan Whittaker (high jump), Williams (60m/200m) and Tommy Wolfe (heptathlon) finished on top. Williams col-

lected Southland Indoor Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Track Performer honors after becoming the first athlete in five years to sweep the short sprints at the conference meet. He went on to post the third-fastest preliminary heat time, a league record 6.59, at the NCAA Indoor Championships and picked up his second All-America certificate with his eighth-place showing. He went on to post the world’s fastest 100m time in any condition, 9.90, at the UTEP Invitational in April, which stood for two-and-a-half months. Meanwhile, Vese also picked up his third title in a row in the 60m hurdles and Tommy Wolfe won his third straight conference multi-events championship. Crown number five came the following season when the Birds received winning performances from Williams (60m/200m), Keith Benford (high jump), Devon Bond (triple jump) and the distance medley relay team of Brandon Chiuminetta, Canel Cole, Bryan Ugochukwu and Albert Cardenas. Williams was tabbed the league’s Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Track Performer for the second season in a row, while Benford and Bond were named Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, respectively. UTSA matched Lamar’s 26-year-old Southland record in 2011 with its sixth straight title and that came on the strength of the Roadrunners equaling their conference record with a half dozen gold medals — Benford (high jump), Bond (triple jump), Cardenas (mile), Garrett Jr. (shot put), Taylor Reed (pole vault) and Williamson (long jump). That helped the Birds score a 153 points, which was the second-highest total in the meet’s 32-year history. Garrett Jr. was named the Outstanding Field Performer and he went on to earn secondteam All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor. The unprecedented seventh championship in a row came last February with another half dozen individual crowns, as Benford (high jump), Garrett Jr. (shot put), Hayes (60m hurdles), Chrisshun Jamerson (800m), Steinert (weight throw) and Williamson (long jump) all were victorious. Benford went on to earn second-team All-America honors with his 14th-place finish at the national indoor championships. UTSA ended a streak of back-to-back second-place finishes at the conference’s outdoor meet in 2008, giving the program its first-ever indoor/outdoor sweep in school history. First-place efforts by Williams in the 100m and 200m, Vese in the 110m hurdles, Tommy Wolfe in the decathlon and the 400-meter relay team vaulted the Roadrunners to their second Southland Outdoor Championship in school annals. Following that meet, the team entered the USTFCCA Top 25 Poll, which was the first national ranking by any program in UTSA Athletics history. Williams earned All-America honors in the 100m following his seventh-place performance at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships and he went on to advance to the quarterfinals at the United States Olympic Trials. The fifth AllAmerican in school history had a year to remember, as he set a total of four school records — 60m (6.66), 100m (10.16), 200m (20.60) and 400m relay (39.84) in addition to winning the NCAA Midwest Regional 100m title, the Southland Outdoor 100m, 200m and 400m relay crowns and the Southland Indoor 60m gold medal. Williams, who led 1-2-3 finishes in both short sprints at the conference’s outdoor meet, was named the league’s Outstanding Outdoor Track Performer. He also set a new conference record in the 60m dash in January and competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships two months later. The Tyler native capped his season by running on the 400m relay team

Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox that ran the world’s fastest time (38.39) at the NACAC Under-23 Championships. Meanwhile, Brown collected All-Midwest Region honors in the 100m, was named the Southland Indoor Athlete of the Year and was the high-point scorer at both league meets, while Tommy Wolfe became the first athlete to sweep both multi-event competitions in league history.
winning the 800m and 1,500m titles. Her middle distance sweep was the first in the conference in seven years. Jessica Jones was the Birds’ other champion, as she won her third consecutive 100m hurdles crown, joining former UTSA All-American Ryanne Dupree as the circuit’s only three-time winners in the event.
The program’s second sweep in three years came in 2010 when Williams (100m), Bond (high & triple jumps) and Williamson (long jump) won individual titles at the Southland Outdoor. The Birds scored a then-school-record 148 points en route to their seventh title under Fox’s tutelage and Williams recorded the nation’s top 100m time (10.03w) in his gold-medal performance. Bond went on to post the third-best national finish in program history with his fifth-place effort in the triple jump, while Williams became UTSA’s first-ever four-time All-American with his ninth-place showing in the 100m. He went on to sign a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys in July 2010, becoming the first UTSA athlete to play in the National Football League.
UTSA posted its highest indoor finish, third, in a half dozen years in February 2010 on the strength of a school-record-tying six individual/relay crowns. Jones successfully defended her 60m hurdles title, Mecke swept the 800m and mile for the second straight year, Pernilla Savestrand and Kayla Pratt were victorious in the 3k and 5k, respectively, and the DMR collected gold for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, Savestrand was tabbed the circuit’s Newcomer of the Year after earning the same award during the cross country campaign.
Three Roadrunners — Benford (high jump), Bond (triple jump) and Keyunta Hayes (400m hurdles) — won conference crowns at the 2011 Southland Outdoor, as UTSA finished second to Stephen F. Austin by 16 points. Hayes was tabbed the conference’s Freshman of the Year, a first in program history, after accounting for 16.75 points, which was the highest total among league frosh. Ten athletes qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Preliminary Rounds and a school-record three — Benford (high jump/honorable mention), Bond (triple jump/second team) and Garrett Jr. (shot put/second team) — went on to earn All-America honors. UTSA left the league in style last May with its third indoor/outdoor sweep in the last five years. Hayes swept both hurdles events on the final day of the meet, while Garrett Jr. won the shot put for the program’s first-ever outdoor throws gold medal in its 21-year history in the conference. Those two and Williamson went on to earn All-America accolades at the national meet. Hayes (400m hurdles) posted the best finish of the three, fourth, and that was the second-highest outdoor finish in school annals. He went on to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Olympic Trials. On the women’s side, Fox immediately turned the Roadrunners into Southland contenders in just four seasons. UTSA nearly won its first Southland Outdoor Championship since 1997 a year ago and it ended up posting its best finish, second, in 15 years. The Roadrunners won a total six individual/relay titles — Katie Bragg (hammer), Jhorden Hunter (100m), Eboni Johnson (triple jump), Zaquita McClanahan (shot put), Mecke (1,500m) and the 400m relay quartet of Shahira Ehiemua, Chiugo Okonkwo, Krystal Wynn and Hunter — and Ehiemua was tabbed Southland Freshman of the Year. That came on the heels of a fourth-place effort at the conference’s indoor meet where Chenale Smith (high jump) and the distance medley relay of Isabel Balbontin, Grace Williamson, Nina Herrera and Alyssa Diaz captured gold medals. The 2011 campaign saw Aimee Jonas win the program’s seventh Southland pentathlon title, which helped lead UTSA to a third-place finish. Meanwhile, Bragg picked up the school’s first-ever hammer crown during the outdoor season, as the Roadrunners placed sixth in the team standings. Mecke helped lead the program to a five-place improvement at the 2010 Southland Outdoor and she was named the league’s Athlete of the Year after
In his first season, Mecke became the fourth female in school history and first in a dozen years to win the Southland Cross Country Championship. Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox finish by a Roadrunner in at least 12 years. The league’s Student-Athlete of the Year also was a five-time Southland Athlete of the Week honoree. Mecke went on to win Southland Indoor Championships in the 800 meters and mile in addition to running the anchor leg on UTSA’s first-place distance medley relay squad and she was tabbed the meet’s Outstanding Track Performer and circuit’s Student-Athlete of Year. Meanwhile, Jones swept the circuit’s hurdles crowns, including successfully defending her 100m hurdles title, to become the first female in school history to do so and she went on to compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional. In June, Pratt raced to All-America honors in the 5k at the USA Junior Championships. Brooks, the school record-holder in the indoor and outdoor 800 meters, completed a rare double for the Roadrunners in 2007, becoming just the second male athlete in school history to earn All-America accolades at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the same season, matching Youngblood’s feat from 2004 (heptathlon/decathlon). Additionally, Buteaux advanced to the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships and became the program’s third All-American with a seventh-place finish, breaking Youngblood’s school record with 5,519 points. In 2004, Youngblood won the Southland Indoor heptathlon title en route to being named the league’s Indoor Men’s Athlete of the Year and earning AllAmerica honors with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He then picked up his third All-America certificate with a seventh-place showing at the national outdoor meet in Austin. In his first season as interim head coach in 2003, Fox led the Roadrunners to a pair of individual league titles and a fifth-place finish at the Southland Indoor. Additionally, Carl Johnson was named Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet.
The 2002 season saw Fox tutor his student-athletes to several more honors. Both Youngblood and Ray won their respective pentathlons at the Southland Indoor Championships, while Youngblood also was the high jump champion, high-point scorer and Outstanding Field Athlete. Ray went on to repeat as the outdoor heptathlon champion. The pair both finished seventh at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America accolades. The UTSA men won the 2001 Southland Outdoor title and Fox also guided Ray and Youngblood to multi-event league titles during the season. Ray claimed indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon crowns, while Youngblood was the indoor pentathlon champion. Fox, a team captain at Texas in 1998-99, was an All-American and the firstever Big 12 Champion in the indoor heptathlon and outdoor decathlon. He also holds the U.S. Junior first-day total and long jump records and held the Big 12 Outdoor meet record in the decathlon from 1997-2009. In 1995, he broke Daley Thompson’s junior 100-meter dash mark in the decathlon and was the No. 1-ranked U.S. Junior and third-ranked junior decathlete in the world. Fox also still owns the Arizona Class 4A state record in the long jump (24-7) and his 10-year-old triple jump mark of 49-1 was broken in 2007. A 1999 graduate with a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology, Fox served as an assistant with the Texas track & field camp from 1997-98 and with the Longhorns program until 1999. Associate Head Coach Scott Slade
S
cott Slade, who was promoted to associate head coach for distance and cross country in July 2011, is in his seventh year as a member of the UTSA’s coaching staff.
This past cross country season saw the women fall just short of their first conference championship in 16 years. The closest finish in Western Athletic Conference history saw Idaho edge the Roadrunners by just three points. Alyssa Diaz (third) and Nina Herrera (seventh) both raced to first-team All-WAC laurels, while Emily Perez (11th) and Samantha Fish (13th) were second-team honorees. UTSA wrapped up its season with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional, which was the program’s best showing since winning the 1996 NCAA District VI title and advancing to the national meet. Herrera (18th) and Diaz (25th) led the way with all-region performances. Slade helped lead the UTSA men to a Southland Conference indoor/outdoor championship sweep last spring and the women recorded their best outdoor finish (second) in 15 years. He also guided Chrisshun Jamerson (indoor 800m), Dana Mecke (1,500m) and the women’s distance medley relay of Isabel Balbontin, Grace Williamson, Nina Herrera and Alyssa Diaz to league titles. All told, 11 of his athletes (six women/five men) raced to all-conference honors. Additionally, the men’s DMR of Cole Reveal, Jamerson, Brady Hand and Albert Cardenas also broke the Southland’s 16-year old record at the New Balance Invitational. He led UTSA to its best finish in 14 years at the 2011 Southland Men’s Cross Country Championships. Albert Cardenas’ third-place performance was the best finish by a Roadrunner at the league meet since Philo Saunders’ third-place effort in 1998 and he went on to earn All-South Central Region accolades. Meanwhile, the women recorded their best showing in a dozen years and Carly Kitts was tabbed the Southland Freshman of the Year. Slade’s runners combined to earn all-conference accolades in six events (four indoor/two outdoor) the following spring, including Cardenas, who won the indoor mile championship. Meanwhile, the DMR of Cardenas, Canel Cole, Jamerson and Mike Medrano established a new program record at the prestigious New Balance Invitational. His distance crew scored more points than any team at the Southland Indoor Championships, including a 1-2-3 finish in the mile, and that helped the Roadrunners win their league-record-tying sixth consecutive title. That came on the heels of Reveal racing to All-South Central Region honors during the cross country season. Reveal (eighth) and Cardenas (ninth) finished among the top 10 at the Southland Cross Country Championships, which gave them all-conference honors, and that helped the Roadrunners place third for the second year in a row. Slade’s distance runners were instrumental in UTSA’s second indoor/outdoor Southland Championship sweep in the last three seasons in 2010. The indoor campaign saw the distance medley relay team of Brandon Chiuminetta, Cole, Bryan Ugochukwu and Cardenas win the program’s fifth-ever conference crown and the Roadrunners received five other scoring performances at the meet. That effort was doubled during the Southland Outdoor, as UTSA went on to score a school-record 148 points. In fact, each distance runner accounted for points at the conference meets. Layne Nixon led the way at the 2009 Southland Cross Country Championships, as he earned all-conference honors with his seventh-place effort. Slade also helped lead the women to a fourth-place performance that fall, giving the program its best finish since 2004. Kayla Pratt finished second, Mecke (the defending champion) placed fifth and Southland Newcomer of the Year Pernilla Savestrand crossed the tape in seventh place. Mecke and Nixon went on to pick up All-South Central Region accolades to close out the campaign. In his first season coaching the women, Mecke became the fourth female in school history and first in a dozen years to win the Southland Cross Country Championship. She won her first seven races of the season before finishing the campaign with a 23rd-place showing at the NCAA South Central Regional, which was the highest finish by a Roadrunner in at least 12 years. The league’s Stu-
dent-Athlete of the Year also was a five-time Southland Athlete of the Week honoree. Mecke went on to win Southland Indoor Championships in the 800 meters and mile in addition to running the anchor leg on UTSA’s first-place distance medley relay squad and was tabbed the meet’s Outstanding Track Performer and circuit’s Student-Athlete of the Year. Meanwhile, Pratt raced to All-America honors in the 5,000m at June’s USA Junior Championships. On the men’s side, he helped lead the Roadrunners to their fourth consecutive Southland Indoor Championship in February 2009. Slade then guided Michael Cook to the league’s outdoor 1,500 meters title and he became the first athlete in eight years and fifth in program history to accomplish the feat. The victory gave the true freshman a spot in the NCAA Midwest Regional. That came on the heels of a 2008 campaign that saw UTSA claim its third conference indoor crown in a row. Three months later, he was instrumental in the program’s first Southland Outdoor Championship in seven years, which resulted in the inaugural indoor/outdoor sweep in school history, the league’s first since 2004. Slade made an immediate impact in his first year with the program, helping Larry Brooks become the first distance runner in school history to earn All-America accolades and compete at the USA Track & Field (USATF) Championships. Brooks also completed a rare double for the Roadrunners in 2007. The school recordholder in the indoor and outdoor 800 meters became just the second male athlete in school history to earn All-America accolades at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the same season, matching Justin Youngblood’s feat from 2004 (heptathlon/decathlon). The Buffalo, N.Y., native came to UTSA after a three-year stint as the director of cross country and track & field at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, Calif. He started up Soka’s cross country and track & field programs in fall 2004. Slade also coached the 2004 Orange County Marathon Champion and the leadoff leg of the winning distance medley relay at USATF Indoor Nationals. He also founded the Pacific Throws Academy and was the co-chair of long-distance running for the Southern California USATF. Prior to Soka, Slade was the head coach of the cross country and track & field programs from 1991-2003 at Plattsburgh State University. He was a four-time NCAA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year and two-time SUNYAC Coach of the Year. From 1989-91, Slade was an assistant cross country and track & field coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Slade began his coaching career in 1988 as an assistant cross country and track & field coach at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. It was there that he served under legendary distance coach Dr. Joe Vigil, who served as the United States’ distance coach at the 1988 and 2008 Summer Olympics. In his two years, Slade helped lead the school to the 1988 and ’89 National Cross Country Championships and helped coach five distance runners who won national titles and a total of 41 All-Americans. Slade is Level III trained in distance events by the USATF, currently is the NCAA South Central Men’s Cross Country Region Representative for the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and is a member of the NCAA Division I Cross Country Executive Committee in addition to being the South Texas USATF Coaches Advisory Chair. He also serves as meet director for the UIL Region IV Championships, as well as the Ricardo Romo Cross Country Classic, which is the largest cross country meet in the state of Texas. Slade served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2012 North American, Central American, and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships. An All-America distance runner at the University of Buffalo, he earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 1987. Two years later, Slade received his master’s in health, physical education & recreation from Adams State College. Slade is married to Darlene Holland.

Leading the way was Garrett Jr., who qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships Preliminary Rounds (discus), posted a pair of runner-up performances at the league meets (indoor shot put/discus) and broke both UTSA’s shot put marks. Meanwhile, Bragg earned a silver medal in the hammer at the Southland Outdoor and established new program records in the weight throw and hammer. Competing in its final Southland meet, UTSA scored 147.5 points and held off a late rally by I-35 rival Texas State, which finished in second place with 134.5. The Roadrunners, who won their league-record seventh consecutive indoor crown in February, claimed 10 of the circuit’s last 14 track & field team championships before exiting the league.
Trailing by three-and-a-half points (135.5-132), three-time defending champion Stephen F. Austin won by just seven one-hundredths of a second over Northwestern State, while the Roadrunners placed fifth in a season-best 3:44.33, and that propelled the Ladyjacks a 142-139.5 victory in the team standings. The margin of victory was the closest since UTSA edged UT Arlington by one point in 1993.

UTSA Olympians Roger Soler
O
