THIS HAS BEEN A MILESTONE YEAR IN UTS HISTORY. The past year has been marked by the development of detailed plans for the reconstruction of our school building and the renewal of our Strategic Plan. As we planned the revitalization of our historic home, we made the decision to relocate the school to a site at 30 Humbert St., approximately 15 minutes from UTS, during construction. Space limitations made it impossible to stay at 371 Bloor St. W. without dividing the student community and compromising the UTS experience, whereas the temporary site will accommodate all students, teaching staff, and most support staff. The relocation will also ensure that the project is completed in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner, reducing the construction timeline by as much as three years, while minimizing health and safety risks. The target date for the move is August 2018.

The plans for the 371 Bloor St. W. site have taken shape and we are grateful to both our Stakeholder Committee and our Steering Committee for providing valuable advice. Our architectural team has created exciting plans that will allow UTS to continue its leadership role in educational innovation, designing facilities that will empower students to take initiative, innovate, and develop globally relevant competencies with the support of our stellar staff. Renewing our Strategic Plan involved consultation sessions with alumni, parents, students, and staff that explored the transforming domains of education, work and life—and how these changes should be incorporated into UTS priorities. One result was an update of the school’s mission to read: “UTS graduates take initiative and innovate as socially-responsible global citizens.” Our students are invariably ahead of the curve and continue to demonstrate initiative in determining future pathways. UTS DEVELOPS THE SKILLS AND SELFCONFIDENCE THAT ARE SO IMPORTANT IN LIFE. IT DEVELOPS LEADERS. Local, national, and global leaders are taught and nurtured at UTS, making it a school of unique importance. The future leaders currently studying at UTS are benefitting from a revitalized partnership with the University of Toronto and a renewed commitment to innovate in our classrooms and physical learning spaces. And the collective leadership of the UTS community is the key to realizing the full potential of the school and its students. One of the hallmarks of UTS culture is the determination to pull together towards a shared and worthwhile goal. As we gather momentum for our Building the Future capital campaign, I am proud to be part of a generous and visionary community that is already building towards the evolution of the school into a state-of-the-art 21st-century learning environment. This is a time of transformation, and this is the time for all of us to create a stronger UTS for the leaders of today and tomorrow. WORKING WITH THE STUDENTS HERE IS LIKE GETTING ON A ROCKET SHIP. I started teaching here eight years ago. There has always been such incredible support for trying things that are new and cutting-edge.The students are so eager to learn, and push me to try new approaches in my teaching as well. That includes taking something like a video game and using it to address a serious topic through immersive gameplay. We are finding new ways of understanding complexity, seeing different perspectives, approaching problemsolving with empathy, and how to bring that all into the classroom. TINA BATES “When I think of my time here at UTS, I think of one word: discovery.”

THIS IS WHERE I CAME INTO MY OWN. When I came to UTS, what I found was a place where students and families from different backgrounds were joined by one common link—the desire to strive for excellence. Surrounded by the most active minds I have ever known, and a community that fostered curiosity and appreciated and accepted different interests, I was able to come into my own. My teachers and fellow students fueled my desire to learn, and co-curricular activities such as assemblies, house days, and sports formed some of my most cherished memories. I am thrilled that my son Jacob now has a chance to make memories of his own at UTS. I believe there is truly something for everyone at UTS, and all you need to do is spend some time in its halls, go to a school event, or talk to students to discover how you can find your place here. OUR STUDENTS HAVE A LOT OF INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY. Oscar Wilde once said, “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” The drama program at UTS helps student experience that. Our students explore different theatrical styles and learn a wide range of physical and vocal techniques to help them build their creativity, fine-tune their leadership skills, and

learn to balance ideas and collaborate effectively. These are such widely transferable skills that are crucial in whatever you do and our students take these lessons with them wherever they go. Theatre is like life. You’re never done. You’re always building. There is no finished product. You can always tweak it and build it and look at it a different way and there’s something exciting about that because it’s alive and compelling. Gabrielle Kemeny Drama Teacher

UTS HAS BEEN A TRANSFORMATIVE PART OF MY LIFE. When I first came to UTS I was worried about fitting in, but because everyone here is so welcoming, I became a part of the community right away. On my very first day I couldn’t find my classroom, but the person whose locker was next to mine had the same class and helped me find it. I still remember that kindness. Your friends shape who you are as a person, which is why it is so important to be surrounded by people who are compassionate, driven, and motivated. One of the most important things about my experience at UTS is how I have always been encouraged to try new things to figure out who I want to be. I have been exposed to such a diversity of opportunities to find my passion. That meant a lot. UTS is where I went through the process of finding out what I want to do. As I entered my first class here I never would have guessed I would be drawn to computer science, and yet next year I’ll be studying Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. I see myself completely differently now than when I started at UTS. I see myself as more independent, more sure of myself as a person, with a better understanding of my beliefs and values. I wouldn’t be the same person if I went anywhere else. Hermish Mehta ’17 UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO SCHOOLS ANNUAL REPORT 2016/2017 21

UTS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

CENTRAL TO THE UNIQUE SENSE OF COMMUNITY AT UTS. The UTS Alumni Association (UTSAA) plays a vital role in the UTS community, building and maintaining valuable links between the school’s past, present and future. Accordingly, the UTSAA has focused in the past year on strengthening alumni communications, expanding our range of programming and creating meaningful connections between UTS alumni and students. Recent changes to The Root magazine represent one example of our efforts to communicate better with alumni. Following a readership survey late in 2016, the magazine was redesigned to feature a more contemporary look and more diverse, bite-sized editorial content that showcases a wider range of school and alumni activities.

Finally, the Association has continued to emphasize its mission to foster interaction between current students and alumni—interactions that are central to the unique sense of community at UTS. With graduation shifting from November to June this past year, the UTSAA was proud to be able to host both the Class of 2016 in the fall and the Class of 2017 in the spring at the Faculty Club for the annual pre-graduation dinner.

In an effort to further strengthen studentalumni relationships, the UTSAA has created a steering committee to develop a digital platform that will help connect UTS students, staff and alumni. UTS PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION

WE FEEL VERY FORTUNATE TO BE A PART OF THE UTS FAMILY. Always a meaningful part of the UTS community, over the past year UTSPA increased the opportunities for as many families as possible to get engaged. In addition to our usual participation in school events such as Staff Appreciation Breakfast, Open House, New Parent Welcome Events and Graduation, this year we instituted parent receptions for each grade, developed an early internship program for our younger students and organized a school-wide community dinner for over 400 guests. Parent involvement in school life was further supported by UTSPA representation on various committees such as the Building Stakeholders Committee, the Alumni Internship

Initiative and the Rotman Strategic Alliance Committee. As in the past, we hosted a Summer Opportunities Fair and a Club-O-Rama for parents. We are always looking for ways to make a positive impact in our students’ lives. This year, we continued to support myriad clubs, such as DECA, Debate, Robotics, Classics, and Cuspidor. We also contributed to the school’s Wellness Program by expanding the offerings of the Healthy Snacks initiative with the support of our devoted parent volunteers and help of UTS staff. As always, our dedicated parents were grateful for the opportunity to interact with their children in a school setting and were energized by our students’ enthusiasm and joy. One of the most important things I learned at UTS was to put yourself out there and build new skills. I first joined the Field Hockey team in M3 (Grade 9) and now I’m the Team Captain. I never would have become involved in this sport if not for UTS. Being at UTS means I am able to grow up around people who think differently, fostering a diverse and open-minded community. I appreciate that. Hannah Nissenbaum ’17

Due from the UTS Alumni Assocation of $965 [2016 - nil] relates to donations the Foundation deposited into the UTS Alumni Association bank account. 2. Transactions with UTS are measured at the exchange amount, which is the amount of consideration established and agreed to by the parties. Amounts due to UTS have no set terms of repayment and are allocated to income (loss) to the extent that the funds are invested in the Foundation’s investment portfolio. During fiscal 2017, investment income of $598,839 [2016 - $ 25,154 investment loss] was allocated to the amount due to UTS.

Graduating Class Bursary Project Since 2007, parents of graduating students have celebrated their children’s graduation from UTS by making a gift to the Grad Class Bursary Fund in honour of their children. The Grad Class Bursary is endowed with over $215,000 which provides approximately $10,000 annually in financial aid to current UTS students. Contributions this year total over $30,000. We thank our families for giving the gift of a UTS education!
