Letter From the President Katie Sowa ‘15 This semester, ASDA has been up to a lot! We’ve had social events, community service events, plenty of lunch & learns, and our first ever golf tournament. Earlier this month, 8 of us traveled to the ASDA National Leadership Conference in Chicago, IL. We had the opportunity to collaborate with ASDA Leaders from all over the country. We also gained personal leadership training to better serve our classmates in our respective roles. The keynote speaker focused on how to create a “disruptive change” and that thinking outside the box yields better results. Hopefully you’ll see some of these skills at work in the near future.

UTSD ASDA: Going Global Kelsey Edmonson ‘15 This September during ASDA week, we held a toothbrush and toothpaste drive to benefit our soldiers in remembrance of 9/11. We would like to give you an update on your donations!

ASDA officers and Ryan packaged the donations from the drive into 127 bags each containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and oral hygiene instruction page. The supplies are in transit to Africa and will be distributed by the 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion to be used in oral hygiene educational classes targeted to the local populace.

We had originally planned to give the donations indirectly to troops through the Red Cross. However during the lunchtime drive, Ryan Hyde, a 1st year dental student and veteran, stopped by and suggested we send our donations directly to troops stationed overseas with the Civil Affairs Battalion of the Army. Ryan established contact with an Army dentist (a Baylor 2010 graduate) to receive the supplies in the Horn of Africa. A few of our

Thank you all for your donations to the drive and we look forward to giving you more updates when the supplies arrive! ASDA would also like to recognize and give special thanks to Dr. Fullerton and Trisha Fullerton for sponsoring the shipment of the supplies. 3 3

The 1st Annual ASDA Open Golf Tournament at Herman Park Golf Course was a success, and it wasn’t because of my golf game. The 4-man scramble format was friendly for beginners since only one out of four players needed to land a playable shot. Needless to say, teams with more experienced players performed significantly better. The shotgun start at 8:00 AM seemed early, but as temperatures rose throughout the morning, the start time was just right. UTSD ASDA did a phenomenal job organizing the event with the Herman Park staff. Our team didn’t feel rushed or the need to slow down, which can happen in golf tournaments with twenty teams. Like any busy golf course, there were quite a few golf balls landing in unintentional fairways, but that added to the fun. There were prizes on specific holes for “longest drive” and “closest to the pin”, which tormented me mentally unlike those who rose to the occasion. Unfortunately, our team didn’t take home any “white jackets” at the tournament’s awards luncheon, but we certainly felt like winners drinking ice-cold Shiners after a long 18 holes. 4 4

Lawrence H. Meskin Award Laura Nelson ‘16

My fellow ASDA publications editor, Macey Cartrite, and I had the amazing opportunity of traveling to New Orleans, LA to accept the Meskin Journalism Award in October of this year.

As we are new to publishing newsletters, we did not know what to expect from the luncheon. Upon arrival, we were greeted by dentists from around the country that also have a yearning to write. The American Association of Dental Editors and Journalists (AADEJ) presented us with plaques for our school and a monetary award for our local ASDA chapter. We would like to thank the American Association of Dental Editors and Journalists for this amazing honor. We would also like to acknowledge our classmates and faculty that have contributed stories and pictures to our newsletters. These are the individuals that have made our publication possible and we are privileged to have such outstanding colleagues!

Views from a First Year Andrew Naeger ‘17 Coming into dental school, you never know exactly what to expect. Leading up to orientation, I was excited for this incredible opportunity, yet slightly intimidated by the unknown of my new life as a dental student. Those fears and intimidations quickly subsided as I began to meet my classmates for the next four years. I was amazed by the variety of backgrounds and stories that lead each of them to this point in their lives. Some stories were similar to my own, and others were far different. The commonality was that each worked extremely hard to earn their seat at this school.

course work week by week. I do everything I can, and again with the help of my classmates, to remain focused and motivated to continuously stay on top of the material and busy work. Although I see the importance to many of our courses, I enjoy mostly the classes that directly relate to dentistry. Dental anatomy is my favorite course this semester. I enjoy learning the in depth intricacies and truly admire our professors in Dr. Frey, Dr. Quock, and all the faculty who are there in and out of class to aid in our wax-ups. There is nothing better then taking what we learn and being able to apply it in the waxing lab. It is in there, where I truly feel the most like a dental student and I, like everyone else, look forward to each progression we make towards clinic.

“Working as a team is essential to all of our success”

I never thought I would be able to confidently say that dental school has been fun. Surely we have our ups and downs throughout the semester, but it is important to remember that we are working towards the career of our dreams. As a first year, every day is something new and we must continuously be eager to learn and move forward. I feel truly blessed every day I get the opportunity to put on my navy scrubs and come to The University of Texas School of Dentistry. If anything, this first semester has only solidified my passion for dentistry.

It did not take long for me to feel a sense of pride for my class and it continues to be an honor to sit with them each and every day. I would easily say that my biggest surprise to dental school, thus far, is the amount of support that you receive and must give in return to your classmates. Whether it be sharing a review for an exam, working together on a group project, or simply enjoying each other’s company during our breaks, working as a team is essential to all of our success. For me, as a first year, I take the
