Commencement

School of Architecture

Message from the Dean The School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin is relatively unique among its peer institutions. Our nine programs cover the full breadth of the disciplines of the built environment, and the depth of our degree offerings not only range from the undergraduate to doctoral level, but also include opportunities for joint degrees within programs as well as with other schools and colleges at UT. Bringing together Architecture, Community and Regional Planning, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, Urban Design, Sustainable Design, and Architectural History, the school looks to the past as well as to the future, investigates design from the scale of the human body to a mega-region, and explores problem contexts ranging from low-income housing to high-tech medical environments. This depth and breadth provides a robust educational framework that is well grounded in the fundamentals, comprehensive in its topical investigation, and innovative in its experimentation. Foundational to our educational process are multidisciplinary integration and collaborative partnerships. While the lay public may think of designers as creative individuals, the actual design process is an intricate weaving together of many voices and diverse viewpoints. Beyond all of the many curricular components that comprise a design education, the most valuable lessons may stem from the dynamics of our community. In active discourse or in casual conversation, in project teams or in helping another in the fabrication lab, all of us have shared in the indelible support and camaraderie of the design community. The students who are graduating today from our School are among the world’s best prepared to address the ever more complex questions and issues facing contemporary society and the future state of our planet. Each one will share in shouldering the profound responsibility of our respective disciplines for determining the physical fabric of society, a fabric that provides first and foremost for the health, safety and welfare of all populations, yet also manifests as the tangible repository for a society’s values as well as the scaffold for how cultures define themselves and their aspirations for the future. As the designers of the built environment, you are uniquely suited to convene differing constituents and points of view, to map contested boundaries and territories, to negotiate and pose multiple scenarios and interventions. The difficulties that you and the rest of the world have faced in this past year due to the pandemic and multiple crises were heart rending and tragic for so many, but also a somber reminder that our society depends on the very type of thinking that you have developed in your years here. Your accomplishments during this time were extraordinary, and I look to you to be the agents of change that the world so desperately needs. At The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture, we are rethinking the role of design in the larger world, from the buildings and environments that we produce to our engagement with the public and the surrounding urban fabric. We look to you, today’s graduates, to give voice to the value and potential of design in the world as it is to bring about the world that could be.
