With Earth Month just a week away, the Office of Sustainability and the Student Government Association Traditions Committee are partnering up to launch the university’s first “Big Green Friday” on March 27 on Pedestrian Walkway.

With the support of the SGA Environment and Sustainability committee, the Office of Sustainability will be using “Big Green Friday” as a day to highlight the important achievements in sustainability the office has made during its time at the university and to promote the environmental movement.

Begun in 2007 with the creation of a fulltime sustainability manager position, the Office of Sustainability defines itself as an organization that works to promote sustainable initiatives on campus.

Preston Jacobsen, sustainability manager at the Office of Sustainability, said he hopes the event will be a celebration and bring together those who believe in the organization’s goal to raise awareness of the environmental issues on campus.

“The concept is simple, if you support the

environmental movement and sustainability at UT, then toss on some green clothes and celebrate in solidarity as we move forward in creating a more sustainable place to live, learn and work,” Jacobsen said.

Aside from showcasing the different environmental organizations available on campus, “Big Green Friday” will also include free food, music, games and giveaways. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the “Power Down Pledge.”

The “Power Down Pledge” is a energy pledge to conserve energy and actively remain aware of energy saving opportunities.

“If possible, the pledge is also meant to spread the word about energy conservation and why it’s important,” Jacobsen said.

Logan Terheggen, co-president of S.P.E.A.K (Students Promoting Environmental Action in Knoxville) and senior in chemical engineering, stressed the importance of the event to the university as a whole.

“This event is critical to the university and its culture,” Terheggen said. “UT must take steps to assume a role as an environmental leader in the nation if it truly believes in becoming a Top 25 university.”

“Big Green Friday” will be celebrated from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m on Pedestrian Walkway.

Hawkins’ one-man campaign holds to preparation, passion Hannah Marley Staff Writer

As a lone competitor and self-described “progressive candidate,” Grayson Hawkins of the Hawkins-Kiefer campaign wants to change the way the campus looks at the Student Government Association.

Since Hawkins’ vice presidential running mate Aimee Kiefer is no longer on the ballot, Hawkins is running alone against two larger campaigns comprising SGA veterans. His mission, Hawkins said, is to unite and represent the unaffiliated and independent students of UT under a platform that addresses issues he said many students feel strongly about.

Q: Why did you decide to run for election?

GH: My entire freshman year I just complained — which is just bringing up an issue without proposing a solution — and earlier this year, it just clicked in my head, and I saw the SGA as the biggest platform to both get my message across and be taken seriously. I see other SGAs across the nation that have more student involvement, that have more of a voice, more of a sway, then I look at UT’s SGA, and it seems like a group of popular people, like a members-only club.

I researched it and realized that it really is more geared toward students in student organizations and Greek life. If you’re in the current SGA, it’s much easier to get elected, to run for leadership positions.

Q: Which issues matter the most to you and why?

GH: The most relevant right now would be sexual assault, campus beautification and the student body at least telling the administration that Aramark is not cutting it. Those three issues are my focus. For sexual assault, in my platform, I outline just a couple of steps followed by a contingency plan. Step one would be to lobby the administration and pass legislation, get the students involved in this, tell the administration they’re not doing enough. I want to propose that officers for different organizations tap into those funds, I would like to require them all to go through a peer responder education program. Because if the student body doesn’t get involved, I don’t think anything will ever be done.

Beautification could start with creating more green space and repairing sidewalks.

sidewalks, I see the cracks and the grunge, and campus in general has no aesthetic appeal.

For Aramark, I simply want to voice student opinion, because student opinion is: Aramark has bad food quality. I’ll take you to PCB any day and show you. I’m not sure if Aramark is the best solution, it’s just the easiest. There are many more issues that I cover, and they are all outlined at hk4utk.com.

Q: Why do you think you are the best person for the job? How do you differ from your competitors?

GH: There’s an obvious lack of preparation or effort, and they haven’t brought much to the table. They didn’t bring anything to the table until three days ago.

I performed much of the research, I developed the platform. My obvious dissatisfaction with the way things are now, and my drive and dedication to do as much as I can, not just for what’s right in my eyes, but what’s right in the eyes of the student body as a whole (make me qualified). My platform comes with more preparation, all of my major sections are sourced with recent relevant news articles and academic studies. I think it’s much more obvious that I’m passionate about these things, that I’m not going to accept complacency in the administration or, if I’m elected, in SGA. So if it’s not for preparation, and passion, and drive, what else would qualify me for the position of student government president?

In an interview with the Daily Beacon, Connect UTK representatives Will Freeman, candidate for president, Madison Kahl, candidate for vice-president and Mariah Beane, candidate for student services, described in their own words what exactly their campaign means to the student body.

Q: What is Connect UTK? MK: We’re essentially striving to connect students to their SGA, to their administration and to other students. We’ve been involved in SGA for the last three years, and I think through that we now know the ins and outs of the organization. We know what works and what doesn’t.

Q: Why did you decide to run for election this year?

WF: I’ve been a part of all three branches of

Q: What is your biggest policy point and goal for next year?

WF: We’re trying to implement a presidents’ round table, where each organization across campus can have a representative, hopefully their president, come together in a room and just talk to each other about what’s going on in their organizations. I see a lot of value in that because it’s a good way for students across campus, not only in SGA, to

have a better idea of what’s going on.

MK: Some of the feedback we’re getting is ‘Y’all (in SGA) are super relevant right now, but where are you later on in the year?’ I think that’s sort of a perennial problem with SGA. Every year that’s our feedback that’s been received … There needs to be that faceto-face conversation, and we think the presidents’ round table is a good way to do that.

Q: What does your campaign have that makes you best suited to lead SGA next year?

MB: Ultimately, our experience has led us to the perspective of how SGA can impact students. While most times SGA is thought as indifferent in student’s minds, we recognize that and we’re okay with that in the sense that we know we just have to be passionate about whatever student concerns are out there and try our best to fulfill them.

Q: What sets Connect apart from other SGA campaigns?

MB: When we say we’re going to do something, we understand how we’re going to go about doing it.

Q: Why did you decide to run for this year’s election?

SW: I decided to run for the student body presidency because I think I have a real passion for this university. I think I bring a diversity of leadership to SGA, and I really just want what’s best for the university, bringing it together to form one big community, one happy Big Orange family and really being an

WK: I’ve seen a lot of campus organizations that aren’t often represented equally, and I personally feel I could be that voice in student government because I feel like student government is supposed to represent the entire student body, and I want to represent the entire student body.

Q: What would be your biggest policy point and goal for your campaign?

SW: Safety on campus has been a really big concern, at least in my eyes and in the eyes of students, so we really want to put forth sexual assault education at an orientation session, so students are more educated about what sexual assault is and how to deal with that situation if, unfortunately, it comes upon them. Also, we’re trying to work on our blue light system here, and maybe put more blue lights in so students are safer. If you don’t feel safe at your home, your university, where else are you

going to feel safe at?

LM: Being a PR major, I noticed a huge flaw in the way things are communicated through the student government together. They always talk about the disconnect between students and the administration, but I really think the disconnect is further down between the students themselves because if we don’t know what the students actually want how can we convey that accurately to administration?

Seth is always saying that the only time we’re all together is during a football game.

That’s what we all push behind. What we’re thinking about doing is having a venue rented out on the campus consistently…where it’s always open, it’s always organized and so we can discuss things that come up on campus.

Q: What makes your campaign the best qualified or the best to lead our student government for next year?

WK: We want people to know that we are students. SGA has this appearance that it is a big SGA and, unfortunately, there’s a disconnect because you feel like you can’t approach SGA, but we’re normal students. We want to be approached and I think that’s what helps qualify us.

Tennessee has a track record of producing top artists, from Nashville to Murfreesboro, and in recent years, Knoxville as well.

Arpetrio, a three-piece electro-jam band hailing originally from Nashville, was formed while attending school together at UT. This Saturday, with opening support from Stokeswood, they group will return to the Scruffy City to perform at the International’s Concourse.

“This venue means a lot to us,” said Trent Little, Arpetrio’s bass and bass keys player. “It was our favorite place to go see live shows back in the day, and it’s great to be able to play the same stage ourselves.”

The band attributes much of their success to the thriving music scene in Knoxville and around campus.

“Knoxville was the start of Arpetrio,” said Alex Mindermann, the band’s guitar and keys specialist. “The people, the music scene and the all-around hunger for live music in the city were huge factors in our cultivation and motivation.”

Arpetrio has been steadily on the rise and constantly evolving since starting around 2009.

“In the beginning, there was a guitar, bass and drum set on stage,” Mindermann said. “As we became more informed on how electronic

production was accomplished, we dove deep into the incorporation of dance music (and) synthesizers.”

The band also began utilizing more and more technology, the most obvious being a laptop. Not just one or two, but all three members play their instruments along with a laptop.

“Ableton Live software is a great tool for cultivating and sharing ideas with each other,” Mindermann said. “We can individually map out ideas and bring them to the table for a collaborative process.”

This ability to work on the fly has allowed the band to explore deeper into its own distinct sound. Most notably, the group’s last release “Catch the Vibe,” encompasses several genres while staying true to the signature Arpetrio style.

Wes Taylor, the band’s drummer, came up with the idea for “Catch the Vibe.”

“It’s about everyone getting on board with doing what you love,” Taylor said.

While they continue to spread their wings and push forward, the band still gives credit to UT for its creation.

“The college radio station 90.3 The Rock has always been great about recognizing and sharing the local music scene with Knoxville; they’re the first ones to broadcast our music on the airwaves,” Mindermann said. “For these reasons, among others, we still claim Knoxville as our hometown.”

This weekend, Scott and Bernadette West are inviting people from all over the world to “Keep Knoxville Scruffy” with Scruffy City Entertainment.

Beginning Friday, the Funny Ears Fringe Festival will highlight 36 Knoxville bands in three days at Scruffy City Hall and Preservation Pub. The goal is to showcase homegrown talent as well as develop and expand the Knoxville music community.

“It’s going to be a great mash-up of styles at this event,” said Natty Knowles of reggae band Bliss on Tap. “It brings so many bands and people together for a great musical experience that will keep pushing musical innovation to the next level.”

Funny Ears Fringe Festival directly parallels the Big Ears Festival, another Knoxville festival, introducing festival-goers to local music of a variety of genres.

“Scott and Bernadette West have given the

local community of musicians the ability to grow right alongside of Big Ears,” said local pop-rocker Justin Stamey of Far Far Away.

The event will radiate “killer vibes,” according to members of Bliss on Tap. “It’s about spreading joy and loving life,” Knowles said.

American culture offers nice surprises

One of my classmates asked me an interesting question the other day. We were sitting down before the start of class and he turned around, without having spoken to me before and asked, “What has surprised you most about your visit?”

It was a good question, but it hit me like a freight truck. I sensed a pall of silence descend on the room. I felt like a deer caught in headlights and searched my mind for an answer. But I could not think of one that would have been satisfactory. After I had said something about the portions of food being really big, he turned away. I could tell he was somewhat disappointed by my answer, as was I. The question stayed with me, however. I thought of all the amazing things I had experienced on my travels. But what had really surprised me? The trouble was that, thanks to the omnipresent nature of American TV in Britain, much of my experiences had been expected.

The reason people ask a question like my classmate did is so they can get a view of their culture from the outside. They want a foreigner to look at their country with fresh eyes and tell them something that they perhaps hadn’t recognized themselves. So while I could not answer my classmate at the time, I will endeavor to answer him now as I feel that his question deserves an answer. I have four quick observations to share.

I have been surprised by the friendliness of everyone I have met. I know this sounds somewhat saccharine, but I wouldn’t write it if it wasn’t true. This is not to say we’re all excessively horrible in England. But there is an openness here that is not found in my home country. We are a naturally reserved people and tend to keep our emotions on a tight leash.

This does not seem to be the case on this side of the pond. It is not uncommon, for example, to be talked to in an elevator. Gasp!

Or even more surprising, to be talked to by a cashier. I have discussed this American cultural tick with a number of my fellow Britons, and some of them are annoyed by it. But I rather like it.

I have been surprised that anyone could actually be called Lance, Bruce or Tanner.

Not to say that there’s anything wrong with these names, just that I didn’t think they actually existed or only existed in the world

Or even more surprising, to be talked to by a cashier.” of ‘80s sitcoms. But they are real! I have proof. They’re in the register. I have to stifle a laugh every time I hear them.

I have been surprised by how much fun it has been to share a room. This was one thing which scared me stiff coming here. I imagined my roommate being a deranged crack addict or a crystal myth kingpin a la Breaking Bad who would insist that I join his posse. It turns out I needn’t have worried.

My roommate is incredibly normal, enragingly so in fact. Much more normal than me.

We bonded over FIFA and Pop Tarts. I feel it will be hard to adjust back to having my own room again.

The boisterous school spirit was also a nice surprise. I love that so much passion is shown by students when they support their college team. People faithfully wear orange items of clothing to show their solidarity with the university. This is in spite of the fact that orange isn’t exactly the most flattering color in the world.

This enthusiasm is infectious. And while I still don’t know the rules of American Football, I have been to a number of games and have cheered with the best of them. Aramark and the end of the free market #NoFlexZone

The stock market has become a launching point for movies, TV shows and Ivy League graduates’ drug habits. Today, in The Vol Street Journal, we will take a look at the different markets that make up our campus and using pinpoint accurate analysis, track whether you should buy, sell or hold the “stocks” that make up your campus portfolio. **Buy: Aramark** You read that correctly. For the first time in VSJ history, I want to recommend the purchase of common stock in a public company based on a current event that will boost their revenues. I would like to thank our food-service provider for providing not only “food,” but the opportunity to elevate this satirical weekly rant to the next level. I mean, guaranteed revenues of $300 per semester across 21,000 students?!

Why doesn’t every business just force customers to purchase their product, with absolutely no substitutes? Oh right, the free market.

Two days before Spring Break (yes, we noticed), Volunteer Dining announced that starting next fall, all undergrad students will be enrolled in a mandatory $300 “Flex Plan” if they do not purchase a traditional meal plan. Part of me is upset that students are now forced to pay money they may not have and part of me is upset no one’s used #NoFlexZone in protest. The timing of this announcement was much improved compared to last year’s reveal of virtually the exact same plan, where administration foolishly gave time for students to organize campaigns and

contact news outlets in the immediate days that followed, effectively sending the proposal back to committee. This year, most students destroyed the brain cells that would worry about an additional $300/ semester to attend school while they were in Florida.

To be fair, you can always get a full refund! All you have to do is: use your cash leftover from paying increasing tuition, rent, and textbooks on other dining locations and leave the $300 sitting there for the whole semester, go online, print the refund form, incur the $15.00 processing fee, get “approved” to remove your money and put it back in your custody, then immediately put $300 back into your Flex Plan because the spring semester is about to start! Are you having fun yet?! I know Aramark is! UT administration and Aramark know you will use your Flex Plan, because from a convenience and budgetary standpoint, you’d be dumb not to. At worst it’s a major financial burden to some UT students, at best it’s a mandatory three-year investment with a negative 5 percent return, not accounting for time value of money or opportunity cost.

If you are a part of the 15,000 undergraduate students that do not live on campus and cook most of your meals (read: Ramen Noodles and dry cereal) at home, you might rightfully feel a little upset at the idea of a mandatory meal plan.

If you are a member of a sorority and already forced to purchase a meal plan through your organization which you may or may not get to eat because you

don’t live in the house, you might rightfully feel a little upset at the idea of a mandatory meal plan.

If you are a non-traditional student, trying to balance the cost of your schooling, your children, your

“Dear You, We’re always told to not compromise our values for another person, to stay firm in our beliefs and not let others influence us. But the thing is, often in friendships, relationships, etc. we need to in order to have friends, partners, lovers, etc... So how far is too far? I’m a firm believer that if someone truly loves/ respects you, he/she would never ask you to change what you believe.”

In an age of digital communication, abbreviation and 12-point font, people (and the post office) frequently bemoan the antiquation of handwritten letters.

Letters don’t have to go only to the people you know. The excerpt above was found in Columbus, Ohio, as a letter written by a stranger, for a stranger.

“The World Needs More Love Letters” is a foundation headed by a young woman named Hannah Brencher, who has a deceptively simple mission: to “make love famous” by leaving love letters in places for strangers.

The act arose out of a dark time in Brencher’s life, in the bleakness of depression following her college years. As a response, the young woman began to leave love letters written to strangers in various nooks and crannies of New York City. She tucked letters into the bookshelves of coffee shops, in public spaces and even in clothing stores.

In a world that don’t seem to write handwritten letters anymore in lieu of emails or quick texts, these letters contain an endearing humanity between the handwritten lines. No two people possess the same way of writing letters, and no two people experience life in quite the same way; these notes allow for a refreshingly real connection.

I’ve never received an anonymous love letter, but few things mean more than the simple kindness of let-

ters I’ve garnered over the years from my family and friends. Taking the time to pick out the exact words of encouragement you would share with someone in a difficult time of life benefits both the giver and the receiver. The recipient, primarily, could gain some wonderful encouragement; but the writer additionally improves his or her perspective on a subject or an area of life, because writing contains a powerful ability to clarify a tangle of thoughts or an incoherent swirl of emotion.

Writing a letter to a stranger or to a friend may be the most simple but important thing you could do. Connectivity seems nearer and farther in our digitally-modified age, and taking the time to script kind words on a piece of paper can go much further than a witty caption or hashtag.

It’s late and you haven’t gotten much sleep this week, but you’d like a reason to stay up. Solution: dance music that sounds, at times, like it’s underwater. Jamie xx’s club music for people who don’t go to the club sounds like the future of dance music, and this is a show that can’t be missed.

Kronos Quartet featuring Rhiannon Giddens and Sam Amidon, 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Theatre

The Quartet is this year’s headlining artist, but the ensemble is playing a wide variety of sets, such as this one where they’ll delve into providing string arrangements for folk musicians Giddens and Amidon. There’s genuine anticipation of this being a very fun show, so it’s highly recommended.

Nels Cline & Norton Wisdom: Stained Radiance, 4:45-6 p.m. at Knoxville Museum of Art If you’ve seen the name Nels Cline before, you likely know it from his work in Wilco, the alt-country that isn’t alt-country band East Tennessee knows and loves. However, his discography is incredibly varied and extensive, and this show is something new even for Cline – he’ll be playing a composition while Norton Wisdom creates a painting that relates to what Cline is performing.

Laurie Anderson & Kronos Quartet, 7-8:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Theatre Dinner at the Tomato Head (or a similar downtown business) followed by one of the most creative musicians still working, along with this year’s headlining artist. I was excited about this from the time the lineup was released, simply because more people should know who Laurie Anderson is in 2015. Go listen to “Big Science” right now.

Grouper, 11 p.m.-12 a.m. at The Square Room Shows will go until 2 a.m. on Sunday morning if you’re so inclined, but after that late Friday night, you want a little extra sleep. I recommend this one because it feels like a nice wrap-up to a long day: Liz Harris, the one Grouper, typically does very stripped-down and intimate performances with just her and her instruments. She makes very good music with dark beauty. It’s a treat.

Big Ears Festival, back for its fourth rendition in Knoxville, is a unique festival in many ways. For one, it attempts to bring artists that emphasize history and creativity over following the leader, whether that’s in electronic or rock music. Rolling Stone has covered and praised the festival numerous times, calling it “ambitious” and the “most diverse festival in the country.” With so many artists available to see, it can be hard to pick which shows to put at the top of your priority list. Well, that’s what we’re here for – these are the 100 percent Official Recommendations for the Big Ears Festival as presented

by The Daily Beacon.

A pianist based out of Louisville, Kentucky, Grimes makes beautiful compositions that combine her piano work with orchestral arrangements, such as on the gorgeous “Earthly Heaven.”

This group made one of the very first records with a synthesizer, titled “Silver Apples of the Moon” in 1967. Big Ears Festival has done a great job of gathering individuals that are very important to electronic music this year; don’t miss a show involving a group that was there for the beginning.

Swans, 9:30-11 p.m. at Bijou Theatre Where your ears may actually fall off from the level of noise presented by Michael Gira and bandmates, along with being in awe at the atmosphere the band creates, destroys, then creates again. There’s nothing quite like seeing the Swans live.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Third-year Tennessee head coach Holly Warlick has already matched her career-high in wins, now she will look to advance her team past the Sweet Sixteen round that her team could not get past last year.

In order to advance a step closer to reaching the first Final Four since head coach emeritus Pat Summitt led the 2007-08 team to the program’s eighth national championship, the Lady Vols will have to get past a Gonzaga team playing in its own backyard.

The 11th-seeded Bulldogs (26-7) will take on the second-seeded Lady Vols (29-5) this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. PST in Spokane Arena, which is just a 1.5-mile drive away from their regular season home arena.

After spending seven seasons coaching Gonzaga’s guards and implementing her vast knowledge on the defensive end, Lisa Fortier led her team to a West Coast Conference regular season championship in her first season as head coach, in which she shared the WCC Coach of the Year award.

In six major statistical categories the Bulldogs rank in the top 50 throughout the country: blocks (5.4 per game), field goal percentage (43.4%), free throw percentage (77.4%), rebound margin (+6.1), 3-point field goal defense (28.8%), 3-point field goal percentage (.355).

“They spread the floor,” Warlick said of Gonzaga, which has six girls on its roster listed at or above 6-foot-2. “They shoot the three really well. Everyone can shoot the three, and they can all handle the basketball. They can all play different positions on the court, so for us it is not a traditional basketball team.

We have to defend better to win this game and understand the importance of one-on-one basketball.”

Upperclassmen and first team All-WCC selections Sunny Greinacher (13.8 ppg, 6.0 reb) and Elle Tinkle (11.9 ppg, .395 3PT) lead the charge on offense while providing leadership along with second team all-conference selection Keani Albanez (12.9 ppg, 87.4% FT).

“They are a difficult team for us to defend because they don’t so much post up,” Warlick said of Fortier’s team, which has scored 158 points in its first two NCAA Tournament wins over George Washington and Oregon State.

“Their style of play makes teams have to help

and rotate the defense, and that is how they get open looks.”

Emma Wolfram and Shelby Cheslek combined for 94 blocks for Gonzaga while Tennessee’s top shot blocker Nia Moore has recorded four blocks in the tournament in 23 minutes and has 33 rejections on the season.

Bashaara Graves has been one of the major storylines of the tournament thus far, and her play down low will be a key factor in whether the Lady Vols advance out of the Spokane region.

The Clarksville, Tennessee, native has provided the difference in the paint, where the Lady Vols have scored 68 points in wins over Boise State and Pittsburgh.

Graves is 17-of-28 on field goal attempts and 11-of-14 from the free-throw line through two games, and her team will continue to look for her.

“We play the game inside out,” Warlick said.

“We are going to go through Bashaara Graves.

I don’t think that is a secret. That’s how we play. As long as she keeps producing double digits, rebounds and she shoots the ball well from the free-throw line, we are going to get her the basketball.”

With a battle in store for her down low with one of the top shot blocking teams in the country, her teammates still have confidence that she can take over any confrontation in the post.

“Bashaara is just a mismatch for every team we play against,” senior forward Cierra Burdick said. “She is so strong and so physical that a lot of the smaller players can’t really handle her. Then you have the big players that she is too quick for. We will be looking for her.”

Tennessee ranks among the top 25 in rebounding margin (+8.3, 18th), scoring defense (55.9, 23rd), and scoring margin (+16.1, 9th).

Senior leaders Cierra Burdick (10.7 ppg, 7.4 reb) and Ariel Massengale (11.2 ppg, 69-of185 3PT) wish to leave Spokane this weekend with the first Final Four berth in their careers and make it to Tampa, where the Lady Vols won their last national championship.

“We are looking forward to this weekend,” senior guard Ariel Massengale said, who has scored 34 points in the NCAA Tournament and connected on five 3-pointers. “We are just going to enjoy the moment.”

Tennessee leads the all-time series with Gonzaga 3-0, all regular season games, and has only lost once in program history to a doubledigit seed in 26 contests.

The winner will take on No.1 Maryland/ No. 4 Duke in an Elite Eight matchup Monday night.

Rising sophomore Coleman Thomas was absent from practice Thursday after reports of his arrest emerged in the early afternoon.

According to a report, Thomas was arrested on Wednesday on a Class E felony for allegedly stealing an Xbox One and three video games from a room in Reese Hall. The theft happened on March 13 between 10:55 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

It was later revealed that Thomas sold the items to a GameStop on Clinton Highway. The report said the stolen goods were valued at $640. GameStop gave Thomas $176.

According to a statement from Associate Athletic Director for Communications Jimmy Stanton, Thomas has been suspended from all team activities.

Thomas played 11 games his freshman season and started in five at right tackle. He was expected to compete for the fifth and final spot on the offensive line for the 2015 season.

Return to Health- In the fall of 2014, wide receivers coach Zach Azzani watched one receiver after another suffer an injury.

Cody Blanc, Josh Smith, Marquez North and Jason Croom’s seasons all ended early due to

injuries.

Now Azzani is watching the same wide receivers trying to fully recover and return to pre-injury form.

The biggest obstacle to recovery: get•Coleman Thomas ting used to the pace of Tennessee football.

“We practice extremely fast,” Azzani said.

“We are faster now than we have ever been. So it’s football shape. It’s one thing to watch the film and know all the techniques, it’s another thing to rep them over and over.

“It’s nice to have them back, they weren’t getting any better sitting on the bench.”

The wide receivers may have returned to the gridiron, but Azzani still isn’t taking too many risks with North, arguably Tennessee’s most talented receiver.

The staff is keeping North from participating in contact drills. Instead, North is working on individual routes.

“I just don’t need him to get hit yet,” Azzani said.

Tennessee will resume spring practice on Saturday.

Vols prepare to take on defending national champions Nathanael Rutherford Staff Writer

The SEC season has not started out as the Tennessee Volunteers baseball team wanted, having lost five of its first six conference games, including a 3-game sweep last weekend at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs.

And the road only gets tougher for the Vols.

This weekend the Diamond Vols (10-11, 1-5 SEC) will take on defending national champion Vanderbilt in Nashville for a 3-game series. The last time the two teams played, the Commodores eliminated the Vols in the first round of the SEC Tournament.

“They obviously have a lot of talent and a good swagger about themselves,” Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano said. “They’re defending national champions, so they feel good about themselves.”

The Commodores (20-5, 5-1) are riding a 3-game winning streak and have won both their conference series so far. Last season, the Vols split the four games they played against their cross-state rivals. This will be the two teams’ first meeting in 2015.

“They’re from the other side, so we know them very well and they know us,” Tennessee second baseman Nick Senzel said. “I thought last year we played them really close, and I think we’ll play them tough again.”

Vanderbilt is known for their pitching, and for good reason. The Commodores boast a deep and talented pitching staff and have a combined ERA of 2.95 on the season. Four of their pitchers who have logged more than 23 innings pitched have an ERA below 2.

For a Vols roster that’s only hitting a collective .254 on the season, facing a solid Vanderbilt pitching staff isn’t a welcome sight. Despite scoring seven runs on Wednesday against Cincinnati, the Vols only earned four hits on the night and haven’t hit over .275 in a single game all season.

Taylor Gash • The Daily Beacon But as deep and talented as Vanderbilt’s pitching staff is, the team’s batters are just as potent. Three Commodore hitters have hit at least four home runs and have driven in 20 RBIs this season. Infielder Dansby Swanson is the most complete hitter for the Commodores with

a .364 batting average, four home runs, 24 RBIs and 10 stolen bases on the season. He also leads the team with 33 runs scored.

Serrano mentioned Wednesday that a pitching change will take place this weekend.

Hunter Martin will replace Kyle Serrano as the

Sunday starter, and Serrano will move to the bullpen for the foreseeable future. The rest of the pitching staff will remain the same.

“We’re going to look them in the eye and take them pitch to pitch,” Serrano stated. “We’ll see how it comes out at the end of the weekend.”
