LOST GIRL
NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT “I was once called a wound dweller. It was a boyfriend who called me that. I didn’t like how it sounded. It was a few years ago and I’m still not over it. (It was a wound; I dwell).” – The Grand Unified Theory of Female Pain by Leslie Jamison The Wendy Darling in this play dwells in her memories, which have become her wounds. Like Wendy, I have a hard time leaving the past behind – much less a magical boy who taught me to fly and took me to a fantasy-land where we shared our first kiss. Wendy always performed the role of “mother” to the Lost Boys. I’d heard the term “Peter Pan Syndrome” – boys who never grow up. When a friend diagnosed me with “Wendy Darling Syndrome” because I was always trying to save the little lost boys, the seed of this play was planted. Next to none of the countless variations of Peter Pan focuses on Wendy’s point-of-view. Writing her journey became a surrogate for my own – the places and people I left behind in order to become the person I wanted to be, the kind of person who stopped worrying about saving the lost boys and started saving herself.
NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR "But thinking isn't doing And doing takes more time." - Wendy Darling, Lost Girl What we want isn’t always what we need. But we are constantly asked to make a choice between the two. Often that fear of action, doing instead of thinking, renders us immobile. Choice means vulnerability, opening ourselves up to be seen. What happens if we get rejected or, even worse, we don’t like what we see? At The University of Texas at Austin we are constantly asked to make that choice, and too often, I personally have let that fear of action hinder me; leaving me in the shadows, so to speak. Being seen means being you, and there is immeasurable strength in that – to act and ask for the things you value. Lost Girl is about embracing vulnerability and learning to be strong enough to act in spite of fear, to join the world moving around us. Wendy shows us we grow through action. She allows her thoughts to fuel her actions, empowering her to ask for what she needs to get what she wants. The act of choosing, balancing wants and needs, comes from within. No one can do it for you. We can all be Wendy Darling.

NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURG “We too have been there; we can still hear the sound of the surf, though we shall land no more.” – Peter and Wendy by J.M. Barrie Writers are often encouraged to avoid using “we” in their writing, as it makes assumptions about readers; it assumes that readers and authors have shared experiences and identities. But J.M. Barrie, author of the classic 1911 novel Peter and Wendy, was unafraid of “we,” and for good reason: Barrie wrote of children and childhood, and we have all been children. Lost Girl invites us to another “we,” the shared experience of leaving childhood, of moving forward, of letting go. We have all encountered the aches of unchangeable time, time that moves precious moments into memory, time that draws unknown futures closer even while we can “still hear the sound” of what came before. Kimberly Belflower draws upon symbols and characters of Barrie’s Peter and Wendy, but Lost Girl shows us a different world from Barrie’s, a world full of characters discovering their own relationship to time, to memory and to each other. And, at the same time, it reveals to us our own world, our own journeys. It reminds us of the “we.”

CREATIVE TEAM KIMBERLY BELFLOWER (Playwright) is a third-year M.F.A. Playwriting candidate at The University of Texas at Austin. Originally from Georgia, Belflower comes to Austin by way of New York where she developed new work with Primary Stages, Transport Group and 54 Below, among others. Teen Girl FANtasies (co-written with Megan Tabaque) premiered at the 2015 Cohen New Works Festival and was nominated for an Austin Critics’ Table Award for Best New Play. Her play Gondal will premiere as part of UTNT (UT New Theatre) in March 2017. LAWRENCE BENNETT (Technical Director) hails from Houston, Texas by way of Chicago, Illinois. He received his B.F.A. from the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University and his M.F.A. from The University of Wisconsin in technical direction and theatre technology, respectively. Bennett has been the technical director and lighting designer at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, as well as the technical director at the University of South Florida. He has worked at various summer stock productions across the country, including Williamstown Theatre Festival, Utah Shakespeare Festival and the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. YI-TAI CHUNG (Lighting Designer), originally from Taiwan, is an M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in lighting design. Chung has worked as a freelance lighting designer, assistant, technician and stage manager in various theatre productions. His most recent lighting design work includes Twelfth Night (Texas Theatre and Dance) and Dialogues of the Carmelites (Butler Opera Center). JOSEPH CORNELISON (Sound Designer) is a M.F.A. candidate in the Radio-TelevisionFilm program at The University of Texas at Austin with a concentration in directing.

He also works in production design, recently serving as art director for the sci-fi feature Soft Matter. Cornelison is currently in pre-production on his thesis, a film about werewolves who sell their magical urine to make ends meet. CAMRYN DE WET (Scenic Designer) graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a B.F.A. in Production Design. After college, she worked in set design and construction at Vive Les Arts Theater in Killeen, Texas. de Wet has also designed and dressed sets for independent film projects, including Rooster Teeth’s The Know and Blue Goggle’s Last Girl Standing. She is currently a M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in scenic design at The University of Texas at Austin. JESSICA FORTE (Stage Manager) is a fourth-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in stage management. She recently managed last spring’s studio project of Legally Blonde the Musical and served as the stage manager for Fall For Dance (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2015). Upon graduating in May, she plans to pursue a career in stage/production management. JON HAAS (Projection Designer) is a second-year M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in integrated media for live performance. His projection designs were recently seen in William Glick’s Wilma, Fall For Dance (2015), Bodies & Souls and Ears, Eyes + Feet (Texas Theatre and Dance). Haas was an artist in residence this summer at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center and continues to run dance and performance company VECTOR alongside collaborator Leah Wilks.

CORTNEY MCENIRY (Dramaturg) is a community-based artist and facilitator pursuing an M.F.A. in Drama and Theatre for Youth and Communities. A co-recipient of the 2016 Ann Shaw Fellowship, she recently facilitated with The University of Texas at Austin’s Performing Justice Project and McCarter Theatre Center. Her work can be seen in publications such as RiDE, Howlround and Theatre Topics. McEniry is currently developing Ladylike, a solo performance exploring inheritance, belonging and white Southern femininity.
LAUREN SMITH (Community Engagement Coordinator) is an M.F.A. in Drama for Theatre for Youth and Communities candidate. Before coming to The University of Texas at Austin, she served as a teaching artist and stage manager in St. Louis, Missouri; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. Most recently, she facilitated a professional development intensive for teachers at Great River Shakespeare Festival and served as community engagement coordinator for Twelfth Night (Texas Theatre and Dance).
KELSEY OLIVER (Movement Director), an Austin native, received a B.F.A. in Dance in 2015, studying at The University of Texas at Austin and Le Centre National de Danse Contemporaine in Angers, France. She is currently a freelance choreographer and performer in Austin and beyond, having recently created for The Beijing Dance Festival, Fronterra Festival, the Center for Arts and Entertainment Technologies (The College of Fine Arts), ZACH Theatre, UTNT (UT New Theatre) and collaborations with the Cordova Quartet. KELSEY VIDIC (Costume Designer) is a M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in costume design. She has worked for companies such as The Santa Fe Opera and American Players Theater. She works in all mediums including opera, dance, theatre, film, music videos and installations. Vidic strives to find movement and expression in her designs in order to effectively communicate the story.
CARA PHIPPS (Director) is an M.F.A. Directing candidate at The University of Texas at Austin where her work includes Girls in Cars Underwater (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2016), The Wild Party and An Accumpulation of Glorious Knick-Knacks (The Cohen New Works Festival, 2015). She recently directed at Actors Theatre of Louisville for the Apprentice/Intern Company’s The Tens and she developed new work with several Bay Area companies in her native California prior to coming to Austin, Texas. She received a 2012 FringeNYC Overall Excellence in Directing award for The Egg Play.

she was seen as “Haideh” in The Orange Garden (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2016). Other credits including Rumors; Enter A Woman, Pretty Enough and This Emotional Closet (The Cohen New Works Festival, 2015). Upon graduating she plans to move to New York City.
TONI LORENE BAKER (Cora/A) began performing at the age of five in Houston, Texas. Most recently, she performed as “Lorraine” in TexARTS' All Shook Up and as “Brooke Wyndham” in Legally Blonde the Musical. After graduating in 2018 with a B.A. in Theatre and Dance with an emphasis in musical theatre, Baker plans to pursue an M.F.A. in performance from New York University (NYU).
JOSH COLE (Slightly/Detective) is a third-year B.F.A. in Acting major at The University of Texas at Austin. Recently he has been working on collaborative works with students of the Radio-Television-Film program. Upon graduating in 2018, Cole intends to pursue television and film in Los Angeles.
ANNEMARIE ALANIZ (Nina/D) began performing in middle school in the Rio Grande Valley. She recently performed as “Molly Aster” in Peter and the Starcatcher, “Tigerlily” in Alice in Wonderland and “Little Sally” in Urinetown the Musical. Alaniz is pursuing a B.F.A. in Acting and plans to return to the Rio Grande Valley upon graduation to teach young, aspiring theatre artists. JORDAN MARANTO (Callie/C) is a fourthyear B.F.A. in Acting major. At Texas Theatre and Dance she has been featured in Refugia, The Trojan Women, Purification (The Cohen New Works Festival, 2015) and Advance Man (UTNT (UT New Theatre) 2014). Maranto is also a filmmaker and her short, Tough Cookies, was a finalist for the Honest Beauty Award at the Girls Impact the World Film Festival at Harvard University in April 2016. In January 2017 she plans to move to Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking, acting and comedy. KAT LOZANO (Mother/B) is a third-year B.F.A. in Acting major. Most recently,

STEVEN SCHWOPE (Curly/Therapist) began acting in high school in San Antonio, Texas. Recent roles include “Chadwick” in Punk Rock, “Dr. Larch” in The Cider House Rules and “The Clown” in Elephant’s Graveyard. Schwope is currently a secondyear B.F.A. in Acting major. ISMAEL VALLEJO (Nibs/Doctor) is a second-year B.F.A. in Acting major from Garland, Texas. Recent roles include “Bill” in August Osage County and “Judas” in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. TEDDY SANTIESTEBAN (Toodles/Boy) began performing in high school in Denton, Texas. Most recently, he performed the role of “Valentine” in As You Like It and “Nick” in Speaking in Tongues. After graduating with a B.F.A. in Acting he plans to move to Los Angeles. LUKE STODGHILL (Peter) is a second-year B.F.A. in Acting major originally from Dallas, Texas. He was recently seen as “John Rosen” in The Orange Garden (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2016), one of three finalists for the Keene Prize for Literature.
