As Karen Zacarías and I first met to discuss an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, one of our first conversations was about where to set the story. It was important to both of us that the play be placed in a time in which the stakes are so high that all of our characters believe they have no options other than the ones they take. And so, we moved Shakespeare’s classic tragedy from 16th-century Verona, Italy to the societal pressure-cooker of 1848 Alta, California (now Northern California).
One of our references was Testimonios: Early California through the Eyes of Women, 1815-1848 (edited and translated by Rose Marie Beebe and Robert M. Senkewicz) which recounts numerous bloody battles of the period: Indigenous peoples revolts against Spanish settlers; marauders and pirates landing in the San Francisco Bay; twelve long years to gain independence from Spain; battles with the invading U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War and battles between families over resources, access and ancient grudges.
Besides being from warring families, the love between these two young women raises the stakes of the drama, making catholic Friar Lawrence’s blessing of their holy union particularly dangerous. There are historical examples of early California clergy – far away from both the Spanish crown and the Vatican in Rome - “going rogue” in the wild west.
My role in this adaptation was to set the time and place and to do the edits/cuts to Shakespeare’s text. Karen did all the playwriting, both Spanish and additional English text. And the two of us collaborated with the brilliant dramaturg, Ken Cerniglia, who kept us on track regarding story and impact.

Arash Baqipur (Assistant Projection Designer) is a M.F.A. in Theatre (integrated media for live performance) candidate at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a storyteller with a background in film and a designer for screen and live performance. He has collaborated on several short and feature films as a production designer and set and costume designer. Recent credits with Texas Theatre and Dance include Fall For Dance (2023). He also served as an assistant media designer for Sunset Baby (Signature Theatre, 2024). Baqipur holds a B.S. in Architecture and a M.A. in Cinema from the University of Tehran.
Layla Crear (Assistant Costume Designer) is a B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in design and technology at The University of Texas at Austin. She has an extensive background in costume design. She recently graduated from the theatre department at The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and is in her first year at UT Austin. Her previous credits include The Wiz (The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts) and Put Your House in Order (Rec Room Arts).
Rodolfo Robles Cruz (Assistant Director) is a M.F.A. in Theatre candidate with a specialization in directing. He is a theatre artist from Morelia, Michoacan with strong roots in Fresno, California. He is a graduate from California State University, Fresno. His artistic work emphasizes the Latinx/ Mexican family unit and the complexities of immigration and identity. Demian Chavez Galvan (Composer/Sound Designer/Dramaturg) is a theatremaker and third-year student at The University of Texas at Austin. Their work as a writer, director, designer, dramaturg and composer has been seen on stages throughout Texas. They are the founding artistic director of Teatro Sin Fronteras, a bilingual theatre company based in El Paso, Texas. Credits with Texas Theatre and Dance include

Justin Gordon (Fight Director) is a member of the acting faculty, as well as an actor, director and fight choreographer working in theatre, film and television. He’s the artistic director of New Canon Theatre Co. (Monterey, California) and trained at Shakespeare’s Globe and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (M.F.A. in Acting). He’s a member of Actors’ Equity Association, SAG-AFTRA, the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and the Society of American Fight Directors.
Andy Grapko (Intimacy Director) is a lecturer and the resident intimacy director for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Natalia Martin Rodezno (Assistant Scenic Designer) is a fourth-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in design and technology at The University of Texas at Austin. She is a lead fabrication student assistant at Texas Performing Arts. Recent credits include serving as project manager for the Texas Theme Park Engineering and Design escape room “Missing on the Moon” (2023), fabrication student assistant for Ride the Cyclone (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2023) and properties manager for Very Blue Light (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2023).
Olivia Saldaña (Assistant Costume Designer) is a UTeach Theatre major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has experience in multiple aspects of theatre, with recent projects involving acting, costume design, scenic design and directing. This is her first project working on the costume design team with Texas Theatre and Dance. She recently performed in the studio series productions of Blood at the Root (2024) and Hamlet (2023).
Laura Soares (Assistant Stage Manager) is a first-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in design and technology (with a focus in stage management) at The University of Texas at Austin. Recent credits include assistant stage management for Butler Opera Center’s Tea: A Mirror of Soul. Romeo y Juliet is her first production with Texas Theatre and Dance.
Gavin Strawnato (Lighting Designer) is a secondyear M.F.A. in Theatre (lighting design) candidate, scenic designer, writer and photographer. He is passionate about research and ethical storytelling. David Tolin (Technical Director) was born and raised in Casper, Wyoming. He received his B.A. in Theatre with a concentration in design/ technology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He received his M.F.A. in Theatre from

Anna Skidis Vargas (Director) is a theatremaker whose research subverts stereotypes through myth, spirituality and humor with a focus on Latine and Mixed Identity stories. She is the artistic director of Mary Moody Northen Theatre (MMNT) and Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts at St.Edward’s University. She holds a M.F.A. in Theatre with a specialization in directing from The University of Texas at Austin and a B.A. in Performance from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. skidisvargas.com
Karen Zacarías (Playwright) is hailed by American Theatre Magazine as one of the most produced playwrights in the U.S. She has four Broadway-bound musicals, including Destiny of Desire and Five Notes (composed by Gloria Estefan). Her other plays include Native Gardens, The Age of Innocence, Shane, The Book Club Play, The Copper Children, Legacy of Light, Mariela in the Desert, The Sins of Sor Juana and adaptations of Just Like Us, Into the Beautiful North and How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent. She is a core founder of the Latino Theatre Commons, which seeks to update the American narrative with the stories of Latinos, and the founder of the award-winning Young Playwrights’ Theater.
Jacob Zamarripa (Assistant Lighting Designer) is a B.A. in Theatre and Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. He has an extensive background in lighting design in the Houston and Austin areas. Credits with Texas Theatre and Dance include Choreomaniac 1518 (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2024) and Very Blue Light and Address the Body! (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2023). Emilio Mejia (Mercutio) is a third-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in performer’s process. He is a Honduran actor, raised in Mexico City, who quickly adapted himself to the theatre scene in the city. Jorge Gonzales (Friar Lawrence) is a second-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in performer's process at The University of Texas at Austin. Valeria Guajardo (Balthasar/Juliet Understudy) is a B.A. in Theatre and Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She takes immense pride in being part of a show that authentically portrays the Spanish-speaking community. As a Mexican artist, representation holds a vital role in her artistic journey. Breaking stereotypes is important to her, celebrating the diverse narratives that make up the human experience. In every performance, Guajardo aims to inspire and contribute to the ongoing conversation about the importance of authentic representation.
