NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Can one moment, word or deed define a lifetime? How long does it take a nation to outrun its worst nightmares? A century? Three? Reflecting on the late 1990’s, it’s easy to forget the perfect storm of social pressures the United States weathered and how uncertain a forecast the 21st century threatened to be. In the riotous afermath of the Rodney King verdict, earthquakes, Simpson trial, Clinton impeachment and the looming threat of Y2K, I imagine most couldn’t fathom a tenser social climate awaiting us on the other side of the horizon. September 11, 2001 had other plans. As someone coming of age then, I had no sense of how large those cultural touchstones would loom overhead, but when I cracked open this script in preparation to direct the play, I recalled the time. I was young, about the age many of my actors are now. In early conversations with the cast, I was struck by the connections they immediately drew between our current moment and the events chronicled in the play. We seem forever locked in a conversation about injustice, rage, equity, police brutality and disasters— both man-made and natural— don’t we? In that way, Sonnets for an Old Century is a kind of time capsule that accomplishes what good art should: it holds a mirror up to nature, reminding us of that which we’d rather forget. The question is what we’re to take from Rivera's words. Solace? Warning? I believe they’re an invitation to examine the moments/questions/people/events that define our lives, to reconsider how we define a life well lived in this new century while afirming that – poignant, funny or even mundane – we each have a story. As we recover from the last year, I suspect we’ll have to look in the mirror and assess who we were, who we are and who we might yet still become. The past may hold lessons, but can we hear them? Will the future receive what we have to ofer when the time comes?
