NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR At first, Ride the Cyclone’s themes are heavy: sudden death, the aferlife, missed opportunities. But once you get on the ride, the show’s joyful heart shines through as we watch our teenage characters live out their wildest fantasies and fulfill their (afer) life’s potential. I grew up next to a rickety Cyclone-esque roller coaster, Western Pennsylvania’s “The Blue Streak.” I remember as a kid hearing stories about it being the country’s oldest wooden roller coaster. Walking up to the structure filled my body with fear as I inspected the seemingly fragile support structure and loud cars shaking their way toward the sky. Once on the ride though, I felt free. Like the Cyclone characters, I ofen felt the limiting and sometimes sufocating nature of small town living and spent my youth dreaming of the life I wanted – a life freer and wilder than my circumstance. I invite you to embrace our characters as their flawed selves who were thrown onto a questionable rollercoaster and who are doing the best they can as they navigate their new circumstance. Some of us have lost loved ones in the last few years to untimely death. Many in our UT Theatre and Dance community are in the throes of grieving the untimely loss of a friend and colleague. This grief, the kind of grief that this play evokes, asks us to be present in each of our lives and relationships. I hope this production can serve as a communal catharsis, as a place of healing and a renewal of hope and joy in living life to its fullness. Of being present for ourselves. And for each other. In life, people make mistakes. Unexpected twists and turns occur and best laid plans get upset. Ride the Cyclone shows us that there is beauty in the unexpected and the mundane and in the world and people all around us. Just take a look around.

NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURGS Look around. What do you see? On the stage is the afermath of a tragic event. But, as you shall soon discover, in the mystical space between life and death, there is much more to this unfortunate sight. Look around. Who is here with you? In this mystical space, there is loss and despair, as well as laughter and joy. At the center of all these, is every moment lived, shared and loved. Just take a look around this whimsical, unpredictable, strange and beautiful thing we call life. And ride along. Welcome to a celebration of youth and life, of dreams and hopes.
