ENRON was first performed by Headlong Theatre on July 11 at Minerva Theatre, Chichester and the production subsequently opened at Royal Court Theatre Downstairs on September 22, 2009 . It was presented in the West End at the Noel Coward Theatre from January 16, 2010 by Matthew Bram Shaw, Art Productions, Carol Newling for Neal Street Productions, Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel . Join members of the production team in a discussion about the casting of ENRON and the significance of the actors’ identities in telling the story.
NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR ENRON is a play that makes myth out of reality. The downfall of Enron, right here in our own backyard, ushered in the 21st century and our current system of corporate power. With this production, we ask “why?” Why are corporations still considered “too big to fail?” Why do we write off transgressions because “boys will be boys?” Why do we blindly follow leaders into a moral vacuum? Why do we consider toxic masculinity a trait of the “successful?” This non-traditional cast asks us to question the links between power, toxic masculinity and big business. In a world where we can no longer talk about unearned power without examining gender and race, our production critiques those that hold power and puts our stereotypes of “success” into the crosshairs. Enron is a great human tragedy, for the characters and for us. With this modern morality play, I invite you to ask why; to decide for yourselves if these characters were villains or pawns; if it was just a few “bad apples” or a toxic culture; if our perceptions of success are leading us to our own downfall and if we’re able to catch ourselves in the freefall before it buries us all.
NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURGS
This production is an experiment. We chose to cast women and non-binary actors in lieu of cisgender men because we believe who is telling this story is important. We tried out building costumes through a collective class experiment, implementing gender-inclusive policies for dressing rooms, and we see this production as an opportunity for dialogue. ENRON is a semi-fictional, historical account of a group of straight, white, cisgender men who got too greedy. It asks patrons to reexamine history; to reckon with complicity and to use the burden of the past to better the future. In the spirit of Lucy Prebble’s script, we use this production to reflect on our practices as theatre artists, as students and as participants in U.S. capitalism. We hope that our research, refinement and even our failures, will serve as an opportunity for a greater dialogue. We hope that the questions we raise with this production will influence our community to strive for equity, inclusion and reflection. What might this country look like if masculinity, whiteness and greed were not idealized or privileged?

She comes to Austin by way of New York City where she worked in fashion photography and styling. Christine Gwillim (Dramaturg) is a Ph.D. candidate in Performance as Public Practice at The University of Texas at Austin with graduate portfolios in Women and Gender Studies and Museum Studies. She is a graduate student affiliate with the Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice and the Graduate Student Assembly (Department of Theatre and Dance). Her doctoral research focuses on curatorial practice in contemporary performance festivals. Gwillim holds a B.A. in Theatre and Performance from the University of California at Berkley and an M.A. in Performance Studies from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. She is the 2017-18 Graham Williford Fellow at the Blanton Museum of Art. Upon graduation in May 2018, Justiz is moving back to New York City. @ dackjustiz dackjustiz.com Sam Lipman (Composer) is the composer-inresidence, head accompanist and lecturer in Musical Aesthetics for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Lipman spent a decade as a jazz musician in New York City before touring as a rock musician based out of Austin, Texas. Most recently, he received his B.A. and M.A. in Composition with honors from the Butler School of Music. He has composed music for several films, including the award-winning documentary Southwest of Salem. He has recorded and performed with Temple Underground and Justin Timberlake, among others. Robert Mallin (Projection Designer) is a thirdyear M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate at The University of Texas at Austin. He holds a B.F.A. in Theatre Design from Concordia University in Montreal, his hometown. Mallin has designed work for the Butler Opera Center, Texas Theatre and Dance, UT Athletics, Texas Exes, The University of Texas at Austin Office of the President, the College of Fine Arts and the Department of Arts and Entertainment Technologies. Mallin also works in film, most recently interning for VER as an LED programmer on X-Men Dark Phoenix. For his thesis, he produced and designed a new approach to the live performance of video games. Kara Mavers (Dramaturg) is a M.A. in Performance as Public Practice student at The University of Texas at Austin. Previous dramaturgy credits include Hairspray and Hedda Gabbler (Whittier College). This is her first dramaturgical credit with Texas Theatre and Dance. Adam Miller-Batteau (Fight Choreographer) is a director, fight choreographer and theatre educator new to the Austin area. Miller-Batteau has choreographed fights for over a decade,
CREATIVE staging violence in over 100 productions. Previous credits at The University of Texas at Austin include Anon(ymous), Little Women the Broadway Musical, Galactic Orphans and Gondal (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2017). Other fight choreography credits include Animal Farm (McCallum Theatre); Julius Caesar (Shakespeare in Detroit) and Macbeth (Stagedoor Manor), among others. Training/Education: University of Michigan (B.F.A. in Acting), Exeter University (M.F.A. in Shakespeare Performance), Society of American Fight Directors (Certified Teacher). Miller-Batteau currently teaches stage combat at the Department of Theatre and Dance. Roxy Mojica (Scenic Designer) is a second-year M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in scenic design at The University of Texas at Austin, originally from Las Vegas, Nevada. She received her B.A. in Theater Arts from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Recent work includes the site-specific performance, Dry Land. Before moving to Austin, Mojica designed work for the world premiere of Brightside the Musical (Arts Square Theater), which earned her a nomination for a Las Vegas Valley Theatre Award for Best Scenic Design. She has served as a designer for Melody Sweets for her onenight burlesque shows (Absinthe Tent, Caesars Palace). Mojica has also designed work for independent short films and music videos in Las Vegas. Reed Dryden Neal (Technical Director) is a fourth-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in design and technology at The University of Texas at Austin. Regional: Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Santa Fe Opera, ZACH Theatre and Shakespeare Dallas. Academic: Kids Who Care Musical Theatre and Texas Theatre and Dance. He is a scene shop senior associate and house manager (Texas Performing Arts), a house manager (Hogg Memorial Auditorium) and a technical assistant (Jarrott Productions). Olayiwola (Choreographer) is a fourth-year UTeach Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. He has worked with choreographers Charles O. Anderson, Dorothy O’Shea Overbey, Jenn Freeman, Manuel Vignoulle, Netta Yerushalmy and Alvin Rangel. Olayiwola recently performed works by Merce Cunningham and Bill T. Jones while at the American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina and was seen in Dance Repertory Theatre’s Fall For Dance, Momentum (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2017) and Bodies & Souls (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2016). Jess O’Rear (Artistic Engagement Strategist) is an artist, scholar and activist currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Performance as Public Practice at The University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on performance work by, for and about transgender people in the United States, with an emphasis on live performance as a vehicle for creating connection through personal narrative storytelling. He also currently serves as the assistant instructor for the Gender and Sexuality Center’s Peers for Peers-for-Pride program. Bex Orton (Community Engagement Coordinator) has been a member of the community engagement teams at Texas Theatre and Dance for UTNT (UT New Theatre) (2017), Little Women the Broadway Musical and Lost Girl (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2016). Orton will be graduating in May 2018 with a B.A. in Theatre and Dance and plans to continue working as a teaching artist in Austin, Texas. Malyssa Quiles (Sound Designer) is a thirdyear B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in performer’s process and design and technology. Hannah Wolf (Director) is a director, dramaturg, teacher and creative producer originally from Juneau, Alaska. Recent projects include: TITLE LOADING (Fusebox Festival/Cohen New Works Festival (2017)), The Bigot (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2017), Dry Land (UT Directing
Studio Project) and The Sky Game (Peppercorn Theatre). She’s developed new plays with Perseverance Theatre, TerraNOVA Collective, Columbia University and NYU, among others. Most recently, she was seen as “Ritu” in Anon(ymous) (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2017), “Emily” in Gondal (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2017), “Nina” in Lost Girl (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2016) and “Molly Aster” in Peter and the Starcatcher (Thirteen O’Clock Theatre). After graduating in 2019, Alaniz plans to move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in television and film. Natasha Cosme Batista (Raptor) is a first-year UTeach Theatre major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has an extensive background in acting and choreography and has recently been seen in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and En Memoire. Caroline Beagles (Andy Fastow) is a secondyear B.F.A. in Acting major at The University of Texas at Austin. She began acting in her hometown of Houston, Texas where she received a Tommy Tune Award nomination for Best Leading Actress for her role as “Ti Moune” in Once on This Island (Aldine Senior High School). She served as a light board operator for The Drowsy Chaperone (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2017). This is her first mainstage production with Texas Theatre and Dance. Brooke Loye (Trader 7/Richard Grubman/Police Officer) is a first-year B.F.A. in Acting major at The University of Texas. This will be her first mainstage production with Texas Theatre and Dance. Previous roles include “Queen Elizabeth I” in Elizabeth Red (UIL One-Act Play Competition). Sarah Maggard (Raptor) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. Carleigh Newland (Sheryl Sloman/Congresswoman/Irene Gant) is a second-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in performer’s process. Most recently, she performed as “Anne” in Gondal (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2017). She also enjoys writing, directing and activist work. Her original play, A Singularity, premiered at the Cohen New Works Festival (2017).
Christiana Thomas (US Senator/Trader 6/ Deutsche Bank Analyst/Board Member) is a B.A. in Theatre and Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She began performing collegiate level theatre at the age of 16. She has been focusing on technical theatre during her time at Texas Theatre and Dance, operating media for Twelfth Night (2016) and has served as an intern in the scene shop at Texas Performing Arts. This is her first mainstage performance with Texas Theatre and Dance. Megan Todd (Skilling Lawyer/Trader 5/Reporter) is a B.A. in Theatre and Dance major also pursuing a major in cultural anthropology at The University of Texas at Austin. She has recently been seen in Telephone.

Francis Rodriguez (Raptor) is a fourth-year UTeach Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. Rodriguez has performed choreography by Netta Yerushalmy, Jeremy Arnold and Oluwaseun S. Olayiwola, among others. She recently completed a semester abroad at Centre National de Danse Contemporaine in Angers, France and presented her choreography as part of Fall For Dance (2017).
Lauren Weik (Elise Deluka/Prostitute/Hewitt/ Geek 2) is a second-year B.F.A. in Acting major pursing a minor in arts management at The University of Texas at Austin. Recent projects include “Francis Burroughs/Sarah Good” in The Crucible (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2017) and Intro to Being Here (The Cohen New Works Festival, 2017). Weik also works with women creatives and artists within the Austin community.
