a note from the artistic directors Under the direction of Charles O. Anderson, Yacov Sharir, and Andrea Beckham, Dance Repertory Theatre is going “downtown” this season by presenting contemporary works in the Oscar Brockett Theatre inspired by New York City’s “downtown dance” scene. Downtown Dance Defined Essentially, “downtown dance” is a label used in New York City to describe work that is in the lineage of modern dance, falling after the postmodern movement of the 1960s and ’70s, yet doesn’t belong to an established (i.e. classical) technique. It is also known as experimental dance. “Downtown dance” historically pushes boundaries, embraces movement for movement’s sake, and is rooted in experimentation and improvisation. These characteristics, however, are elusive, which is one reason why geography—the movement was born south of 14th Street in Manhattan—is seen as the most concrete thread uniting the genre’s choreographers. Makers of “downtown” or experimental dance attempt to create new dances for the new moment. They believe that the forms of the past, though instructive, no longer speak to our dynamic and changing world. Experimental dance takes no one form or style. So much of the media with which we interact tells us how to respond to it, providing cues for our reactions. Experimental dance operates outside this system; it serves no one social purpose. Its form and content aren’t laced with one rarified interpretation or meaning locked inside a terpsichorean puzzle. In other words, there is nothing to “get,” but there is everything to experience. Experimental dance can awaken one to oneself and to the unique way in which one thinks and empathizes. In turn, the revelation of that intellect and emotional connection can aid in understanding why we are who we are, and what defines the universe. “Downtown”/Experimental dance offers new models of thinking about our complex world. It also stretches our ability to empathize with others by engaging our brains in complex and unfamiliar choreographic situations. Dance is uniquely able to give form to the squishy untidiness of experience and dance’s impermanence. Experimental dance, in particular, reminds us that the universe isn’t made of objects, but is woven of infinite processes. creative team Charles O. Anderson (Artistic Director, Choreographer- Seethe) is currently based in Austin, Texas where he is an associate professor of African Diaspora Dance Studies and the M.F.A. Dance coordinator at The University of Texas at Austin. He is the artistic director of Dance Theatre X (dtX), an afro-contemporary dance theatre company, which he founded in Philadelphia in 2003. Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Charles earned his B.A. in Choreography and Performance from Cornell University and his M.F.A. in Dance from Temple University. He has performed in the companies of Ronald K. Brown, Sean Curran, Mark Dendy and Miguel Gutierrez, among others. His work has been presented nationally and internationally and has earned recognition by numerous grants and organizations such as the Pew Fellowship in the Arts, one of “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine, and one of “12 Rising Stars in the Academy” by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education Magazine. Ellen Bartel (Choreographer- In The World of Things and Stuff) received her B.A. in Liberal Arts from State University of New York at Potsdam and her M.F.A. in Dance at The University of Texas at Austin with a focus on the pedagogical methods of contemporary dance and choreography of site-dance. In 2014 she formed the Ellen Bartel Dance Collective, a project-based contemporary dance performance group. In two decades of dancing in Austin, Ellen has managed a small dance studio (‘97-‘06), directed a slow-motion improvisation group (’95-’01), directed non-profit Spank Dance (’00-’13), created more than 47 new dance works, directed over 55 butoh improvisations, spearheaded community dance events such as the annual Dance Carousel (’04-’12), Big Range Austin Dance Festival (’08-’12), Hot September Flurries (05-07), and co- founded the Austin Independent Choreographers. Andrea Beckham (Artistic Director, Cho-
reographer- Through the Mountain/Faith in Unknowing) is a choreographer, dancer, and
educator. Longtime participant in the repertory ensemble, Sharir Dance Company, she has additionally performed with Wilson’s Tallulah Dance Company in Seattle, toured with Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company in New York, and has developed new work with her own pick-up company, Andrea Beckham Collaborative Dance. Presenting choreography since 1989 in the U.S., Mexico, Taiwan, Europe, and new media explorations with Yacov Sharir in Holland, Portugal, Israel and China, Andrea teaches dance and runs the Pilates-evolved laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin, where she proudly received the Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award. Kate Ducey (Integrated Media Designer-

Before coming to Austin, she worked as a lighting designer and performer with several dance and circus companies in Los Angeles, including LA Unbound and Troupe Vertigo Circus Theater. She is excited to be doing her first media design at The University of Texas at Austin. Lacey Erb (Integrated Media Designer- In
The World of Things and Stuff) is an M.F.A. candidate with a focus in integrated media for live performance. Before returning to school, Lacey acted as the technical director and lighting designer for The Denver School of the Arts Department of Dance and Movement. She is a member of the artistic team for Louder Than Words Dancetheatre, and most recently did a stint as the interim technical director at the University of Denver. She has worked as a freelance designer and manager since graduating from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2004 with a B.F.A. in Theatre Design and Management. Tawny Garcia (Choreographer - Gone, Two
Degrees) began her formal dance training in Southern California. Most recently, she was seen in Ears, Eyes + Feet and her choreography was seen in the spring S.E.E.D. show and

is a dancer, costumer, fabric artist, and teacher. Her recent costume credits include Charles Anderson’s Restless Natives, Sharon Marroquin’s Heart, Rosalyn Nasky’s This Place, and Netta Yerushalmy’s Devouring Devouring. She currently teaches ballet at The University of Texas at Austin and Ballet Austin. Her fabric sculptures can be viewed at giantmutantdolls.com Kailey Nunley (Stage Manager) is a sopho-

hopes to work as a stage manager after graduation and is very grateful for the opportunity to work on this amazing project. Yacov Sharir (Artistic Director) graduated
from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, and The Rubin Academy of Music and Dance. He danced professionally for 30 years, including 13 with the Batsheva Dance Company. He was awarded a two-year fellowship from the Banff Centre for the Arts, where he collaborated with Diane Gromala and Marcos Novak on a virtual reality project entitled Dancing with the Virtual Dervish-Virtual Bodies. He has received numerous National Endowment for the Arts Choreographic Fellowships Awards. For the last 25 years he has continually conducted research related to how technological intervention can augment aspects of performance. He also incorporates computer-aided choreography into his studio instruction creating a multi-disciplinary practice of art and technology. He is a frequent keynote

Po-Yang Sung (Lighting Designer) was born
in Taipei, Taiwan and graduated from Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) with a B.F.A. in Lighting Design. He is a current M.F.A. candidate at The University of Texas at Austin where he is in his second year. Before coming to The United States for graduate school he was working as a freelance lighting designer and assistant lighting designer in Taiwan. Christian von Howard (Choreographer -
Two Degrees) is the artistic director of the Von Howard Project. Born in Hawaii and nurtured in Texas, Christian is an international performer, teacher, and choreographer
based in New York City. In 1997, Christian co-founded 1*4*8 The Collective, a collaborative dance and theatre company of seven artists creating work in the New York City area. From 2000 to 2003 he served as the artist in residence at Columbia College South Carolina and the associate director of The Power Company. As a concert performer, Christian has worked with such artists as Doug Varone, and the Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company. In 2006, Christian was awarded a Choreography Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council of the Arts. His choreography has been produced in various venues across the globe including Trier, Germany, Joyce SoHo, DanceNow/NYC Festival, the Ailey School, and the Spoleto Festival in South Carolina. Christian holds a B.F.A. from Texas Christian University and a M.F.A from Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. In the fall of 2014, he joined the dance faculty at Monclair State University as an associate professor of dance and choreography. Christian is also on faculty at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center.

cast Lola Atger (Gone, In The World of Things and Stuff) began dancing at four years old in the Conservatoire de Bourges (France). She studied at the Conservatoire de BoulogneBillancourt (Paris), focused on cinema and theatre at Sorbonne University, and went on to study at a private school in Montpellier. In 2013 she was accepted to the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine d’Anger, directed by Robert Swinston. She has a license in law, economics, and management. Rebecca Bagley (Through the Mountain/
Faith in Unknowing, Gone, Two Degrees) began performing in high school in the Houston area. Most recently, she performed in Kinesthetic Imperative and Ears, Eyes + Feet. After graduating in May with a B.F.A. in Dance, she plans to attend physical therapy school. Veronica Boccardo (Through the Mountain/Faith in Unknowing) began performing at a young age in Venezuela in ballet and flamenco showcases. Once in the states, she continued dancing through high school. At The University of Texas at Austin she has performed in Dance Action’s S.E.E.D. shows Nothing Else Matters, Virgen Morenita, Liber Vitae and The Awakening. She is currently pursuing a B.F.A. in Dance Studies as a certified teacher while enhancing her technique in ballet and contemporary dance. Reema Bounajem (Seethe, In the World of Things and Stuff) started dancing ballet at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas in 1999. She later moved to Texas and trained under the instruction of Mariya Kudyakova, Alexander Vetrov, and Paul Mejia. Recently, she performed in Kinesthetic Imperative, In the Heights, and Church of the Passionate Cat. This past summer she attended and performed at Bates Dance Festival. Now a senior, Reema will graduate in May with a B.F.A. in Dance and a Business Foundations Certificate. Gianina Casale (Through the Mountain/Faith in Unknowing, Gone) is a second-year B.F.A.
Dance major. She began her training at the age of seven, and attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in the Dallas area. Most recently she performed in El Momento and Liber Vitae in the Students Exhibiting Experimental Dance (S.E.E.D.) performance at The University of Texas at Austin. After graduating in May of 2017, she plans to move to New York to follow her dreams of joining a professional dance company. Lizzette Chapa (Gone) began performing in high school in the Rio Grande Valley area. Most recently, she performed in Church of the Passionate Cat and In the Heights. After graduating in May 2017 with B.F.A. in Dance she plans to begin to dance in a contemporary company. Johnny Chatman II (Two Degrees) began dancing at the age of four in the Greater Houston Area. He has performed in Yoav Kaddar’s Raw, Mark Morris’ Grand Duo, David Justin’s Quiver, Merce Cunningham’s Beach Birds, Millicent Johnnie’s Clear the Air, and a student work during his time with Dance Repertory Theatre. This past summer, he attended the American Dance Festival and performed in the main stage show. A junior B.F.A. Dance student with a scholarship, he will also be performing in Fame The Musical this fall. Leigh-Alice Clark (Understudy - In the World of Things and Stuff) is a sophomore at The University of Texas at Austin and is new to the Dance Repertory Theatre ensemble. She danced with Dallas Metropolitan Ballet during high school and performed various roles in ballets such as Penny Whistle, La Valse, The Night Before Christmas, and The Little Mermaid. After graduating with a B.F.A. in Dance and a degree in nutritional sciences, she plans to pursue a career in nutrition for dancers. Camille Collins (Through the Mountain/
Faith in Unknowing, Two Degrees) began her dance studies at The Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy in 2006. In 2009, she was accepted to Houston’s High School for the

Faith in Unknowing, Seethe, Two Degrees) began performing in a dance conservatory in Nice, France. She obtained her diploma in dance education in Aix-en-Provence and is currently finishing her professional training at the Centre National de Danse Contemporiane d’Angers, one of the five French superior dance schools. Performing in Austin as part of an exchange program in B.F.A. Dance, she plans to build her dance career in the United States. Summer Fiaschetti (Through the Mountain/
Faith in Unknowing) began her dance studies at age three in Glen Burnie, Maryland before moving to Texas in 2008. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in 2013. Summer is currently a second-year B.F.A. Dance Studies major. After her college studies, she hopes to pursue an active dance career before establishing herself as a dance educator. Aranza Flores (Through the Mountain/Faith
in Unknowing, Gone) is a current student of the Escuela Profesional de Danza de Mazatlán (EPDM) in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico and a contemporary dancer with emphasized knowledge in mixed tecnhique and floor work. She is studying in her fifth semester at The University of Texas at Austin through an exchange program. She has worked with distinguished choreographers like Omar Carrum, Johnny Millán and Daniel Marín from Delfos Danza Contemporanea. Peter Gonzalez (Seethe, In the World of Things and Stuff, Two Degrees) began his
disciplinary training during high school in Laredo, TX. He most recently performed in Kinestetic Imperative, TEXAS Outdoor Musical, and LBT’s Nutcracker while also joining the Chaddick Dance Theater as a company member. After graduating with a B.A. in Theater and Dance, Peter plans to pursue work in more dance companies and experience different performing venues while traveling. Rasely Goode (Through the Mountain/Faith in Unknowing, Gone) is a second-year student at The University of Texas at Austin. She is currently working towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance with a Business Foundations Certificate. During her first year in the program, she performed in both the fall and spring shows of Dance Action’s S.E.E.D. Claire Goodman (Through the Mountain/ Faith in Unknowing) studied ballet for thirteen years in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. A sophomore B.F.A. Dance Studies major, she has performed and choreographed in Dance Action’s S.E.E.D. for three consecutive semesters. With her degree, she plans to dance professionally and teach young dancers. Jessica Gray (Seethe, In the World of Things and Stuff) began dancing at the age of two and is currently in her fourth and final year at The University of Texas at Austin. She most recently performed in Fall for Dance, Ears, Eyes + Feet, the spring production of S.E.E.D, and Church of the Passionate Cat. After graduating with her B.F.A. in Dance, she plans to make her move to Brooklyn, NY to pursue a career in dance performance or choreography. Katie Gunderson (Seethe) is a third-year
B.F.A. Dance student. She began dancing in high school in the DFW area. Most recently, she was an assistant choreographer for St. Andrew’s Middle School’s production of Anything Goes here in Austin. After graduating, Katie plans to continue working on musicals and to pursue a career in professional dance.

Unknowing, Gone) was born in China, and began dancing in high school. He received his B.F.A. from Beijing Capital Normal University. Afterwards, he began working as a dancer and choreographer with Beijing’s LDTX Dance Company, one of China’s top dance companies. Over the past several years, he has collaborated with many artists from different countries. He traveled and performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. He has also taught dance classes at the Shanghai Drama Academy, Western Academy In Beijing, Alonzo King Lines Ballet School, Virginia Community University. He is currently pursuing his M.F.A. in Dance at The University of Texas at Austin. Lizeth Katz (Seethe, In the World of Things
and Stuff) began dancing in Mexico at a young age. She is currently a senior in the B.F.A. Dance program. She also does Ballroom and Latin dance outside of school, and teaches in both styles. Unknowing, Seethe, Two Degrees) entered into Shenzen University as a dance major at the age of sixteen after six years of professional dance training at the Guangdong Dance School. He received his B.A. in 2010 as an Outstanding Graduate. In 2011, he studied contemorary dance and ballet at the Conservatoire de Perpignan in France before being accepted to Centre National de Danse Contemporiane d’Angers for contemporary dance in 2013. He is now an exchange student at The University of Texas at Austin. Vivian Lugo (Seethe) began dancing from a young age in San Antonio, Texas and is currently a B.F.A. Dance major. She has been selected to perform in several campus performances including the 2014 Fine Art’s Council Showcase, The University of Texas at Austin’s 2014 Mexican American Culture: Campus Events and Entertainment’s Vision Latina Showcase, and several S.E.E.D productions. Upon graduation, Vivian plans to pursue a career in commercial and concert dance, as well as open a dance studio. Aminah Maddox (Through The Mountain/ Faith in Unknowing, Seethe, Two Degrees) began dancing at age three. Originally from Frisco, Texas, she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (Dallas, TX) in 2013. She is currently a second-year B.F.A. Dance major. After her college studies she plans to pursue an active career in both commercial and concert dance. Ladonna Matchett (Seethe, In the World of Things and Stuff, Rehearsal Assistant - Two
cast Degrees) is in her fourth year at The University of Texas at Austin. As a B.F.A. Dance major, she has performed repertoire such as Mark Morris’ Grand Duo, Millicent Johnnie’s Clear the Air, and, most recently, served as a rehearsal assistant to artist Christian Von Howard’s Two Degrees. Ladonna takes a great deal of enjoyment from her craft and looks forward to future endeavors. Eleah Maxfield (Seethe) began dancing at the age of five at Carol Ehler Dance School in Houston, TX. She danced throughout high school, both in studio and drill team settings, before becoming a B.F.A. Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has been seen most recently in the productions Kinesthetic Imperative and Ears, Eyes + Feet. Upon graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in civil rights law and dance throughout her life. Morganne Mazeika (Seethe, In the World of Things and Stuff) began performing in the Houston area with Houston Ballet Academy. Most recently, she peformed in Kinesthetic Imperative and choreographed for Ears, Eyes + Feet and S.E.E.D. She plans to join a traveling contemporary company after graduation. Katie McCarn (Through the Mountain/Faith in Unknowing, Gone, Two Degrees) began dancing in sixth grade at a studio in Alexandria, Virginia. The following year she joined the studio’s competition team and continued this throughout high school. Recently, she has performed in Kinesthetic Imperative and Ears, Eyes + Feet. In May of 2016 she will graduate with a B.F.A. in Dance and hopes to move back to the east coast to pursue a dance performance and choreography career. Allyson Morales (Gone) began her dance
training in San Antonio, Texas at Ballet San Antonio Academy. Most recently she performed in Kinesthetic Imperative and Ears, Eyes + Feet. She is currently a third-year student pursuing a dual major in B.F.A. Dance/ Dance Studies and Communication Studies/ Human Relations.
Kanami Nakabayashi (Through the Mountain/Faith in Unknowing, Seethe), originally from Tokyo, Japan, began dancing when she was two. After training in classical ballet at Tokyo Ballet School, she trained in the Professional Training Program at Quinte Ballet School of Canada in Toronto, Ontario. She is a sophomore B.F.A. Dance major. After graduation, she plans to join a dance company. Katie Perdue (Seethe) has danced in the Dallas area her whole life. Most recently, she performed in Kinesthetic Imperative and in works by Kelsey Oliver and Millicent Johnnie. She also performed in the 2014 American College Dance Festival Association Gala. After graduating in May with a B.F.A. in Dance Studies, she plans on becoming a dance teacher at a high school and a dance studio. Rachel Perry (Through the Mountain/Faith in Unknowing, Rehearsal Assistant- Through the Mountain/Faith in Unknowing) started dancing at the Ozsoy School of Ballet in Dallas, Texas, where she trained in ballet, pointe, and modern. She continued her training through summer intensives including the International Ballet Competition, the American Ballet Theatre Collegiate program, and the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City. She has recently performed in Kinesthetic Imperative and Ears, Eyes + Feet. After graduating with a B.F.A. in Dance and a Business Foundations Certificate, Rachel hopes to join a classical or contemporary ballet company in New York or Europe. Sarah-Grace Poitevent (Through the Mountain/Faith in Unknowing) began performing at a young age in the Fort Worth area. Most recently, she performed in Ballet Frontier’s Youth Dance Festival, Arlington Heights High Schools Spring Dance Concert, and Hairspray as “Amber Von Tussel.” Once she graduates with a B.F.A. in Dance she hopes to go on to dance professionally. She looks forward to teaching and helping young children find a love and passion for dance.
cast Hillary Richerson (In the World of Things and Stuff, Two Degrees) is a B.F.A. Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin and will be graduating in the spring. She began her preprofessional ballet training at the Dance Center of Oklahoma City Ballet at the age of seven and continued at school until being asked to join Oklahoma City Ballet as an apprentice. Most recently, she has performed in Dance Repertory Theatre’s Kinesthetic Imperative, Roots and Wings, and Fall for Dance. McKenzie Robinson (Seethe, Two Degrees)
started dancing at the age of three. McKenzie has previously performed in Fall for Dance, Kinesthetic Imperative, Ears, Eyes + Feet, and The Cohen New Works Festival. After graduating in May with a B.F.A. in Dance Studies, she plans to teach dance and drill team in high schools. Madeline Smith (In the World of Things and
Stuff) was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area where she began training and performing with a pre-professional company Teen Dance Company of the Bay Area in 2006. Most recently, she has performed with Mark Foehringer’s Conservatory for Contemporary Dance Arts. Upon graduating from high school she moved to Austin in August 2013 to pursue a B.F.A. in Dance, as well as a Business Foundations Certificate and Real Estate Certificate at The University of Texas at Austin. Emily Snouffer (Through the Mountain/Faith
in Unknowing, Gone) has trained and performed in the Austin area for 19 years. She has danced with professional companies Verge Dance Company and Reverence Dance Project. In her time at The University of Texas at Austin, Emily has performed works by Robert Battle, David Justin, Holly Williams and Mark Morris. After graduating in May with a B.F.A. in Dance, she plans to audition for companies with hopes of one day working in the field of arts administration and management. Mariana Spósito (In the World of Things and Stuff) is a junior in the B.F.A. Dance program
and grew up dancing in Edmond, Oklahoma. She has performed and choreographed in the S.E.E.D student showcases and worked as co-choreographer in Uh Theatre Company’s production Thomas Was Alone. Most recently, she traveled abroad taking classes in Europe and has interned with a local aerial dance company, Blue Lapis Light. After graduating she hopes to live and dance abroad. Hunter Sturgis (Through the Mountain/Faith
in Unknowing, Seethe) began dance as a hobby in middle school before realizing he wanted to pursue it in college. This is his first time taking the stage with the Dance Repertory Theatre. Upon graduation he plans to dance in NYC. Connor Timpe (Gone, In the World of Things and Stuff) began performing with the Galveston Ballet during high school. He is currently a second-year B.F.A. Dance major. He hopes to dance professionally before attending medical school in order to become a pediatrician. Amber Rose Wall (Seethe) began performing at an early age with companies in the Austin area. Most recently, she choreographed and performed in Ears, Eyes + Feet. After graduating in May with a B.F.A. in Dance, she plans to join a dance company, teach, and work in arts administration. Erica Wend (Seethe, In the World of Things and
Stuff) began dance training and performing at a young age in Washington State. Most recently, she performed David Junstin’s Quiver at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
