NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORS “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it” – Bertolt Brecht At this moment in history, it becomes ever more important for the arts to serve as a vehicle for communication, connection and action. Think of these works as discussions. Some are familiar, some uncomfortable, some long and winding, some absurd, some make us laugh, some reveal things we’d rather hide and some provoke us to act. Each conversation is vital for us to practice the art of community. In this department, we recognize theatre and dance, collectively, as a medium for learning citizenship. Our mission is to cultivate artist-citizens by encouraging students to position their work and development within broad social contexts and instill a deep appreciation for the role that dance plays in human culture around the world. These pieces have asked them to consider viewpoints both deep within and far beyond their personal experiences in order to reflect on individuality and belonging as they navigate layers of self in an increasingly media-centric world. They have explored lineage and heritage as well as cultures and practices unfamiliar to them in an effort to recognize that each of us is part of a complex history that must be considered as a whole in order to understand our relationships with others. The work you will see on stage is the result of young people engaging with their world; a process that has further equipped them to participate in and facilitate change within the world. We’ve asked these artists not just to dance “about” something, but to live with it, interact with it, research it outside of the studio and bring their findings into the work of creating. As a result of this investigation, the work itself can affect not only the performers and the audience, but each person they communicate with. In this way, artist-citizens are not merely reflecting their reality, but directly shaping it. Thank you for being part of our community. Jeremy Arnold, Erica Gionfriddo and Dorothy O’Shea Overbey

The Department of Theatre and Dance is a world-class educational environment that serves as the ultimate creative incubator for the next generation of artists, thinkers and leaders in theatre and performance.

IN THE ETHER Choreography: Erica Gionfriddo Music: Original composition by Eliot Gray Fisher and Brandon Guerra Costume Designer: Ariana Sonsino Lighting Designer: Aaron Curry Projection Designer: Eliot Gray Fisher Production Assistant: Danya Palmer Cast: McKenzie Cornish, Andie Duong, Ashleigh Friday, Haley Fuller, Kolina Hocevar, Kaitlyn Jones, Mackenzie Lawrence, Antonia Neal, Dayna Palmer, Yuriko Roby, Taylor Schmuelgen, Carolina Sirias, Lizzy Tan, Emily Tolson, Claire Wood From the Choreographer: In the Ether is a live experiment investigating how our devices profoundly alter the formation and expression of our identities. How does curating our image for different audiences on digital platforms affect our perception of self, others and the world? How are we seduced by the response to the fragments we broadcast? By live streaming from their phones on stage, these dancers perform simultaneously for multiple audiences, as we have all come to do when we interface online. After witnessing the results of this experiment in the theatre, we invite you to explore the alternate realities archived at bit.do/intheether-drt

OTRA PUERTAS/OTROS RUMBOS Choreography: Ray Eliot Schwartz Costume Designer: Stephanie Fisher Lighting Designer: Aaron Curry Production Assistant: Laura Beth Flett Rehearsal Assistant: Ashleigh Friday Cast: Raquel Baron, Alexandra Behar, David Cruz, Christian Leal, Sarah Maggard, Jordyn Marsh, Morgan Mikes, Victoria Antoinette Murillo, Cassidy Oldham, Dayna Palmer, Tabitha Pupo, Jesse Quezada, Francis Rodriguez, Taylor Schmuelgen, Carolina Sirius From the Choreographer: Revolutionary choreographer Merce Cunningham once said “If we can talk about it, we don’t need to dance about it.” So, rather than preempt your experience by giving you verbal roadmaps, I invite you to poke your head out the window and let the air of affective dance/theatre rush past your eyes and ears. Most importantly, I would like to dedicate these performances to all the families at The University of Texas at Austin who have moved me in so many ways over the years. In particular, Yacov Sharir, who has taught me that while dance is about many things, it is, first and foremost, about human beings. My humanity is richer for having been in your company.

MIRROR Choreography: Francis Rodriguez Music: The Mirror by José Martínez Costume Designer: Penelope Revelo Lighting Designer: Aaron Curry Projection Designer: Ashton Bennett Murphy Rehearsal Assistant: Morgan Mikes Cast: Laura Beth Flett, Ginnifer Joe, Abigail Loper, Morgan Mikes, Victoria Antoinette Murillo, Antonia Neal, Tabitha Pupo, Carolina Sirias, Lizzy Tan From the Choreographer: Looking in the mirror, a place of inspection, contemplation and introspection; is a common experience among humans. We, as the viewers of ourselves, have the authority to stare ourselves straight in the face and see who we are. Yet, while so much personal power revels in this act, the mirror is also delicate and fragile. What happens when it’s gone and who is left looking back at the viewer?

(RE)CURRENT UNREST PT. 3: CLAPBACK Choreography: Charles O. Anderson and Jeremy Arnold Music: Clapping Music by Steve Reich (by arrangement with Hendon Music, Inc., a Boosey & Hawkes company, publisher and copyright owner). Costume Designer: Delena Bradley Lighting Designer: Aaron Curry Projection Designer: Mingxiang Ya Production Assistant: Raquel Baron Cast: Raquel Baron, Ginnifer Joe, Christian Leal, Michael J. Love, Jordyn Marsh, Becky Nam, Addison Norman, Cassidy Oldham, Myrah Porter, Jesse Quezada, Francis Rodriguez, Anna Starr, Khorii Tinson, Mackenzie Voorhies, Kayla White From the Choreographer: “There is a notion out there that black people enjoy the Sisyphean struggle against racism. In fact, most of us live for the day when we can struggle against anything else. But having been, by that very racism, pinned into ghettos, both metaphorical and real, our options for struggle are chosen long before we are born. And so we struggle out of fear for our children. We struggle out of fear for ourselves. We struggle to avoid our feelings, because to actually consider all that was taken, to understand that it was taken systemically, that the taking is essential to America and echoes down through the ages, could make you crazy.” – Ta-nehisi Coates The third installment of (Re)current Unrest explores the current state of “race relations” in the U.S., centering specifically on the physicality of taking a knee as a way of “clapping back” (slang meaning firing back when attacked).

INTERMISSION

WHEN Choreography: Jenn Freeman Music: Original music composed and performed by Morgan Hollingsworth. Costumer: Jenifer Margos Lighting Designer: Aaron Curry Rehearsal Assistant: Kaitlyn Jones Cast: Ginnifer Joe, Mackenzie Lawrence, Abigail Loper, Becky Nam, Antonia Neal, Addison Norman, Oluwaseun S. Olayiwola, Myrah Porter, Mario Alberto Ramirez, Anna Starr, Lizzy Tan, Khorii Tinson, Emily Tolson, Kayla White From the Choreographer: Many spend a lifetime seeking salvation. In this quest, one risks growing dormant– slipping blindly into a permanent state of pause, a suspension of consciousness where one’s life passes by. The movement that inspired When draws out feelings of impatience, fear, curiosity, spontaneity and bravery. It exists as a reminder to look and listen; to be bold and courageous; to be an active participant in one’s own personal question: When? Now.
