NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORS “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it” – Bertolt Brecht At this moment in history, it becomes ever more important for the arts to serve as a vehicle for communication, connection and action. Think of these works as discussions. Some are familiar, some uncomfortable, some long and winding, some absurd, some make us laugh, some reveal things we’d rather hide and some provoke us to act. Each conversation is vital for us to practice the art of community. In this department, we recognize theatre and dance, collectively, as a medium for learning citizenship. Our mission is to cultivate artist-citizens by encouraging students to position their work and development within broad social contexts and instill a deep appreciation for the role that dance plays in human culture around the world. These pieces have asked them to consider viewpoints both deep within and far beyond their personal experiences in order to reflect on individuality and belonging as they navigate layers of self in an increasingly media-centric world. They have explored lineage and heritage as well as cultures and practices unfamiliar to them in an effort to recognize that each of us is part of a complex history that must be considered as a whole in order to understand our relationships with others. The work you will see on stage is the result of young people engaging with their world; a process that has further equipped them to participate in and facilitate change within the world. We’ve asked these artists not just to dance “about” something, but to live with it, interact with it, research it outside of the studio and bring their findings into the work of creating. As a result of this investigation, the work itself can affect not only the performers and the audience, but each person they communicate with. By live streaming from their phones on stage, these dancers perform simultaneously for multiple audiences, as we have all come to do when we interface online. Most importantly, I would like to dedicate these performances to all the families at The University of Texas at Austin who have moved me in so many ways over the years. In particular, Yacov Sharir, who has taught me that while dance is about many things, it is, first and foremost, about human beings. My humanity is richer for having been in your company.

Yet, while so much personal power revels in this act, the mirror is also delicate and fragile. What happens when it’s gone and who is left looking back at the viewer?

In this quest, one risks growing dormant– slipping blindly into a permanent state of pause, a suspension of consciousness where one’s life passes by. The movement that inspired When draws out feelings of impatience, fear, curiosity, spontaneity and bravery. It exists as a reminder to look and listen; to be bold and courageous; to be an active participant in one’s own personal question: When? Now.

Rhys Gates (Principal), Nicolas Daniel Dominguez From the Choreographer: “Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.” – Oscar Wilde Crone is a story of transformation, following the journey of a young woman who loses everything and must choose between forgiveness and revenge. Inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps (1913), this work explores the interaction between a society that lives in harmony with themselves and their environment and one in which people have traded their free will for a sense of belonging. This production of Crone is one stage of an ongoing cross-media project; a collaborative effort involving artists from the College of Fine Arts and the Department of Radio-Television-Film, Crone will be made into a virtual reality film, scheduled for release in Fall 2018.
CREATIVE Charles O. Anderson (Choreographer – (Re)current Unrest pt. 3: Clapback) is head of the dance program at The University of Texas at Austin. Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Anderson earned his B.A. in Choreography and Performance with a minor in African Studies from Cornell University and an M.F.A. in Dance from Temple University where he specialized in African Diasporic dance. Professionally, Anderson is artistic director of the critically-acclaimed Charles O. Anderson Projects (formerly dance theatre X), which he founded in 2003. He has performed in the companies of Ronald K. Brown, Sean Curran, Mark Dendy and Miguel Gutierrez, among others. His work has been presented nationally and internationally and has earned recognition from numerous and organizations such as the Pew Fellowship for the Arts, one of “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine and one of “12 Rising Stars in the Academy” by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.

With over a decade of commercial dance experience, Freeman has worked alongside internationallyrecognized choreographers for Florence and the Machine, Madonna, The X-Factor, Cirque du Soleil, The Martha Graham Dance Company (Tayeh Variation), Los Angeles Ballet (Beneath One’s Own Dignity) and Classic Stage Company (Iphigenia in Aulis), among others. Freeman has also created work for music videos and in live performances for Target, The MTV Video Music Awards, The Jimmy Fallon Show and The Rolling Stone’s 50th Anniversary Tour, among others. She is an internationally recognized educator whose unique teaching style can be experienced at Revive Dance Convention and The Dance Sessions. She frequently appears as a guest/master teacher at Broadway Dance Center, Peridance Capezio Center and EDGE PAC. Graduate NYU TISCH.
Jeremy Arnold (Co-Artistic Director, Choreographer – (Re)current Unrest pt. 3: Clapback) received his B.A. cum laude from Muhlenberg College in 2012. He is a graduate of the tap certification program at Jacob’s Pillow Dance under the direction of Michelle Dorrance. Arnold is a former member of the nationally touring Shelley Oliver Tap Dancers and Chloe Arnold’s Apt 33. He was initially introduced to the Austin dance scene while dancing for Charles O. Anderson’s dance theatre X (now Charles O. Anderson Dance Projects). He was a principal dancer with Tapestry Dance Company from 2014-2017 and is in his third year as a faculty member at The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance. Arnold tours nationally with Revive Dance Convention. He has served on the faculty of the Soul 2 Sole festival, Dance Masters of America and as a guest artist at dance studios around the country. Third Coast Rhythm Project, Tap Ties and McLennan College have commissioned his work.
Erica Gionfriddo (Co-Artistic Director, Choreographer – In the Ether) is co-founder and director of the award-winning multimedia company ARCOS Dance. She has performed and taught internationally and choreographed for INTERDANSA, SITE Santa Fe, Morehead State University, Shenandoah Conservatory, Motion X Dance DC, Currents New Media, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, [254]Dance-Fest, Barnstorm Dance Fest, Texas State University, Colorado College and Breaking String Theater, for which she received a B. Iden Payne Award for Outstanding Fight Choreography. She is a Gyrotonic® trainer and an adjunct lecturer in dance at The University of Texas at Austin.

Dorothy O’Shea Overbey (Co-Artistic Director, Choreographer – Crone) is in her fourth year as a faculty member at the Department of Theatre and Dance. Growing up in Austin, she trained and danced corps de ballet roles with Ballet Austin while studying classical piano with The University of Texas at Austin’s head of piano pedagogy, Amanda Vick Lethco. After receiving a B.F.A. in Dance and B.A. in Philosophy from Southern Methodist Univeristy, she danced with Colorado
CREATIVE Ballet, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, California Ballet, Dances Patrelle, Ballet NY and worked with contemporary choreographers in a wide range of styles. While in New York, she trained at Atlantic Theater School and appeared in indie films, commercials and off-off Broadway productions. After returning to Austin, Overbey founded Red Nightfall Productions, making her first short film, Prelude, in 2015. She is currently producing Crone, a virtual reality film featuring dance, orchestral music and avant-garde costume design. Francis Rodriguez (Choreographer – Mirror) is currently a B.F.A. in Dance (Dance Studies Option) major at The University of Texas at Austin, where she has performed in works by Netta Yerushalmy, Jeremy Arnold and Oluwaseun S. Olayiwola and completed a semester abroad at the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine in Angers, France. Most recently, she was seen in Gesel Mason’s You Don’t Say…, an American Dance Festival world premiere. Ray Eliot Schwartz (Choreographer - Otra Puertas/Otros Rumbos) received his B.F.A. from
Virginia Commonwealth University and his M.F.A. from The University of Texas at Austin. He has served as a faculty member for the Universidad de las Americas Puebla in San Andrés Cholula, Mexico for 11 years where he also serves as the academic coordinator for the dance program. Schwartz is the co-founder of Performática: Foro International de Danza Contemporánea y Artes del Movimiento, research associate at the Center for Mind Body Movement and a consultant and teaching artists for ArcDanz Internaitonal Dance Workshop. Prior to beginning his work in Mexico, he co-founded four contemporary dance projects, including Sheep Army, The Zen Monkey Project, Steve’s House Dance Collective and THEM. He has been a guest artist in the United States, Turkey, South East Asia, South America and Mexico and has served as a faculty member for The American Dance Festival, Bates Dance Festival, MELT, the ZMP Summer Dance Intensive, the Colorado College Summer Dance Festival and SFADI, among others. His work focuses on developing an understanding of the body through experience.
PRODUCTION Delena Bradley (Costume Designer – (Re)current Unrest pt. 3: Clapback) is a first-year M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in costume design. She comes to Austin, Texas by way of Chicago, Illinois where she has spent five years freelance designing and working in theatre and film. Bradley graduated from Ball State University in 2012 with a B.S. in Theatre Design and Technology. Aaron Curry (Lighting Designer) is a second-year M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in lighting design at The University of Texas at Austin. Recent credits include the regional premiere of Building the Wall (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2017), the world premiere of 105 (Cohen New Works Festival, 2017) and Little Women
(Butler Opera Center, 2017). He has composed music and designed sound for short and feature film, theatre and dance, created documentary and animated shorts, built interactive installations and created original theatrical performances. He has received awards
PRODUCTION from the Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media, the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology and the Charles and Joan Gross Family Foundation. He holds B.A. in Film Studies degrees from Wesleyan University and documentary studies from College of Santa Fe and an M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. Stephanie Fisher (Costume Designer - Otra Puertas/Otros Rumbos) is a first-year M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in costume design. Prior to arriving in Texas, she worked as a stitcher at Washington National Opera (Washington, D.C.), Signature Theatre, (Washington, D.C.) and Great Lakes Theater (Cleveland, Ohio). Fisher has designed for theaters in Washington, D.C. (Gallaudet University, NextStop Theatre), northern Ohio (Cleveland Public Theater, Lakeland Civic Theatre, The Beck Center) and New Hampshire, where she has been resident costume designer at Peterborough Players for the last two summers. Brandon Guerra (Composer – In the Ether) is a percussionist and composer from San Antonio, Texas and frequent collaborator with ARCOS Dance. He studied jazz at Texas State University with Butch Miles, Wayne Salzmann II, Ari Hoenig, Johnny Vidacovich, Shannon Powell and Jason Marsalis. He performed in marching percussion groups, including Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (World Champions, 2010); the Texas State Snare Ensemble, where he was a composer and section leader; and the drumline of the Santa Clara Vanguard, where he was a section leader. He is currently the primary drummer with South Texas Jazz and has performed and recorded with various groups in New York City, Cincinatti, Austin and San Antonio. Aaron Kubacak (Costume Designer – Crone) received his undergraduate degree in Radio-Television-Film from The University of Texas at Austin. He is currently a M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in costume design. He has designed work for Dance Repertory Theatre’s Momentum (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2017); Spellbound: A Drag Fairy Tale; Horndog, a student film
directed by Ed Hancox; and will be working with the Texas Ballet Theater designing costuming for Henry VIII. Kubacak will design work for The Crucible this fall with Texas Theatre and Dance. He previously worked as a stitcher for Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, New York (The Magic Flute) and was a first hand and stitcher at Texas Performing Arts. This past summer he designed Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and The Marvelous Wonderettes for Bigfork Summer Playhouse. Samuel Lipman (Composer – Crone) is the composer-in-residence, head accompanist and lecturer in musical aesthetics for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Lipman spent a decade as a jazz musician in New York City, decade touring as a rock musician and, most recently, received his M.A. in Composition with honors from the Butler School of Music. Professionally, Lipman has composed music for several films, including Southwest of Salem, which earned him a short-list for an Oscar®. His orchestral work was performed in May by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestra JoAnn Falletta. He has recorded and performed with the critically-acclaimed Temple Underground, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Shearwater/Okkervil River and Justin Timberlake. Jenifer Margos (Costumer – When) is a thirdyear B.A. in Theatre and Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has worked on projects including Urinetown, the Musical; Spring Awakening and works for the Cohen New Works Festival (2017). This season, she will also be working on The Drowsy Chaperone (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2017). José Martinez’s (Composer – Mirror) music incorporates a wide range of influences from Colombian folk tunes to avant-garde Western art music, while borrowing from Latin styles and heavy metal. All these sounds find a place to interact in his work, creating a unique sound. Collaborations include works for Alarm Will Sound, Wild Up, Third Coast Percussion and Next on Grand: National Composers Intensive.
PRODUCTION Ashton Bennett Murphy (Projection Designer – Mirror) is a fourth-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis on design and technology. This will be her first time designing for a mainstage production with Texas Theatre and Dance. She recently served as the stage manager for The Last Ones and directed En Memoire. Penelope Revelo (Costume Designer – Mirror) is a fourth-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance student with an emphasis on costume design at The University of Texas at Austin. She was recently a costume and wig intern at Sleep No More (Off Broadway). Recent credits include costume design for Hollow (The Cohen New Works Festival, 2017) and Little Women the Broadway Musical (assistant costume designer, Texas Theatre and Dance, 2016). peneloperevelo.com Ariana Sonsino (Costume Designer – In the Ether) is a third-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in costume design at The University of Texas at Austin. Most recently, she served as the assistant costume designer for The Bigot and Slumber Party (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2017) and was the costume designer for Legally Blonde the Musical, a studio production. She has spent the past few summers working in entertainment at SeaWorld of San Antonio, the San Pedro Playhouse and The Paramount Theatre. David Tolin (Technical Director) was born and raised in Casper, Wyoming. He attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he received his B.A. in Theatre with a concentration in design/technology. In 2006, he interned with Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère (Treasure Island) and served as a stagehand for Desert Entertainment for several concerts, productions and events across Las Vegas. He received his M.F.A. in Scenic Technology from The University of Texas at Austin before teaching at Westlake High School for seven years. Tolin joined the staff of the Department of Theatre and Dance in 2017.
Amariah Williams (Stage Manager) is a second-year B.A in Theatre and Dance major pursuing a minor in arts management. Most recently, Williams co-stage managed the Soul Rep Theatre company’s Southside New Plays. Before coming to The University of Texas at Austin, Williams spent a year working in New York with Jean Randich, Rhonda Miller, Dee Caspary and working as a second assistant director for La Oposición, which won an Award of Merit from the Best Shorts Competition. Mingxiang Ya (Projection Designer - (Re)current Unrest pt. 3: Clapback) is a first-year M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in Integrated Media for Live Performance at The University of Texas at Austin. CAST Raquel Baron (Otra Puertas/Otros Rumbos, (Re)current Unrest pt. 3: Clapback, Production Assistant – (Re)current Unrest pt. 3 - Clapback) began dancing in Dallas, Texas at a young age and attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. As a B.F.A. in Dance major, Baron has performed in Ears, Eyes + Feet, S.E.E.D. (Dance Action) and Dance Repertory Theatre’s Momentum (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2017). After graduating in 2019, Baron plans to dance professionally and pursue her passion for event planning. Alexandra Behar (Otra Puertas/Otros Rumbos, Crone, Production Assistant: Crone) is a secondyear B.F.A. in Dance major, born in Miami, Florida. She has performed major classical roles in numerous productions of The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, La Bayadere, Sleeping Beauty and Paquita with professional companies throughout her 15 years of Russian technique training with teachers from The Vaganova Ballet Academy, Mariinsky Ballet and Ballet Nacional de Cuba. She has performed at International Dance Festivals in Peru, Germany and Chile and has won awards at international competitions. McKenzie Cornish (In The Ether) is a fourth-year B.F.A. in Dance (Dance Studies Option) major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has worked with choreographers Charles O. Anderson, David Justin, Suzanne Farrell, Ethan Stiefel and Susan Jaffe, among others. Cornish has performed with the Suzanne Farrell Ballet, Joffrey Ballet School (NYC) and attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts prior to her college career in Austin. David Cruz (Otra Puertas/Otros Rumbos) is a second-year B.F.A. in Dance major also pursuing a B.S.A. in Biology at The University of Texas at Austin. He began his professional dance career in 2015, receiving training from artists Charles O. Anderson, Sara L. Paul and Lyn C. Wiltshire. Since then, Cruz has performed in S.E.E.D. Laura Beth Flett (Mirror, Production Assistant: Otra Puertas/Otros Rumbos) is a fourth-year B.F.A. in Dance (Dance Studies Option) major. She has performed works by choreographers Ananya Chatterjea, Adrienne Hurd and Charles O. Anderson, among others. Recently, Flett performed with Dance Waterloo in Panorama Playground and Dance Repertory Theatre in Momentum. She has choreographed work for Ears, Eyes + Feet, Dance Action’s S.E.E.D., The University of Texas at Austin’s Women’s Resource Agency and other independent projects. Upon graduation she plans to teach, choreograph and continue performing. Friday was a company member at Lake Houston Performing Arts Center for 14 years and is currently a member of the Texas Dance Team. Haley Fuller (In The Ether) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She grew up in Frisco, Texas where she trained for 15 years. She recently performed with Dance Repertory Theatre in Momentum (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2017) in Jeremy Arnold’s Bach in Time, Rennie Harris’ Second to Khan and Gesel Mason’s Lec/Dem or How Do You Spell Femaphobic. Kolina Hocevar (In The Ether) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin who has been dancing since she was three years old and has attended summer intensives at Pittsburgh Ballet and The Jillana School.

She was born in Austin, Texas and began dancing when she was 10 years old. She has worked with choreographers Erica Gionfriddo, Dorothy O’Shea Overbey and Jenn Freeman, among others. Sarah Maggard (Otra Puertas/Otros Rumbos) is a second-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has worked with choreographers Wayne M. Before coming to Austin, Mikes attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas and was a part of a pre-professional ballet contemporary dance company. Recently, Mikes performed in Dance Repertory Theatre’s Momentum. There she presented works created by Abby Zbikowski, Oluwaseum S. Olayiwola, Netta Yerushalmy and Lyn C. Wiltshire. Last semester, Mikes represented the dance area at the American Dance College Association’s convention in March 2017. Dayna Palmer (In The Ether, Otra Puertas/Otros Rumbos) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major also pursuing the health professions certificate program in hopes of pursuing a career in both medicine and dance. Originally from Houston, Texas, Palmer graduated from the High School for Performing and Visual Arts. Since joining Dance Repertory Theatre, she has had the opportunity to perform in Momentum (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2017) and Ears, Eyes + Feet (2017) and has performed in the works of both Charles O. styles. Upon graduating in May 2019, Quezada plans to spread his knowledge of dance by teaching at the high school level as a dance director.
